I don't write reviews, normally I would just move on, but this was pretty unethical so I just wanted to let people know. I placed an online order with Nana's kitchen. (the only way you're able to place an order) I went to pick it up at the time that was given on the app, my credit card was charged immediately. When I went to pick up my order, they were closed. The Sign with the hours of operation were posted and stated they should have been open. I went back to my car and called the phone number on the app, which was a recording. I left a message with my phone number for them to call me. The next day I received a text that said my money was refunded which it was, everything but the tip I had left. I never received a call from them, no acknowledgment at all as to why they were closed and why they kept the tip. I am in the F&B business and no, they could have refunded the total amount that was charged to my card, but they decided to keep the tip. Pretty disappointing and unethical. Edit: I appreciate the response from Nana's kitchen, but it was not just a "bank processing delay" I left my phone number on the recording and asked for a call back, which I never got, had that happened I would not have had to leave review. The person managing the front end was very friendly. The on screen menu was clear with color photos and easy to read. Finally got to check this spot out on Saturday as I start going to restaurants for #PHXVRW I ordered the crispy chicken handheld and a side of Mac N cheez. The bun was soft and "buttery" and the breading was nice and crisp while the chicken was soft & moist. I am not good at tolerating spice of any kind, even pepper, so I couldn't do the cabbage and sauce on the bun (scraped it off), but the residual flavor was poppin and I still enjoyed the whole sandwich. Because I took the order to go, the steam/moisture from the container made the fries a little soggy, but I revived them in the air fryer and they were scrumptious. We couldn't decide what to order so we went with the Nana's Soul platter, a side of fried pickles, wings in all the flavors and an extra side of Mac and cheese. We took our order to go and sadly they did not pack our side of mac and cheese so make sure you check your bags before you leave their establishment. Initially I had saved BYOV as a vegan restaurant to try, and drove to this location to find out that it was permanently closed. At first I was disappointed as I eat vegetarian, and love trying new plant-based locations. I began searching my other saved locations, but decided to check out Nana's Kitchen to see what replaced the former BYOV. When I went to Yelp/Google, I was thrilled a vegan place replaced a vegan place. What are the odds! I do have a peanut and almond allergy, so vegan places can be a little tricky to navigate. Wish their website listed better for food allergies as I felt it would inconvenience to ask. I went with what I thought would be safe, and loved their featured menu item. Next time I visit (yes, it's that good for me to drive to Chandler), I will definitely go during an off time to inquire more about the website or may write the restaurant in advance as the soul food plate is calling my name for sure! I have been a vegan for about a 2 years now , and out of all the vegan places I have eaten at, this was the biggest disappointment. I was so excited to try this place. Well, I'm truly disappointed to leave this review. I've been waiting to try this restaurant for months. I live in the deep West Valley, and my family and I drove almost an hour and ten minutes to get there. The location is in a little shopping center, which I don't mind since I'm from Detroit and I'm used to that. When we arrived, there was a young lady eating by the window and no one at the cash register. We stood there for maybe 3 to 4 minutes while the lady in the back cooking kept looking at us. Finally, the lady at the window got up to take our order. I told her that if she was on her lunch break, she could finish, and I'd understand. She took our order, and we spent close to $100, plus a tip, but I was not happy with the experience. Nana should've been there that day because the mushroom tasted like it was fried in old oil and hit my stomach hard. The mac and cheese were overly sweet, and the baked beans tasted like they were drenched in barbecue sauce. My daughter's burger was decent, but the fries and cornbread were cold. My twins got the chicken and waffles, and while the waffle was good, it was also cold. Overall, I was truly disappointed for the amount of money we paid. The meal was mediocre, not delicious. You have to try the food here. I tried the Nana 's Soul Plate and I was really enjoying the flavors of that plate. The savoryness of the meal had us feeling good. Took it Togo and went to a park to eat. The best day date ever. Service was okay though, the person at the counter didn't really give the best service and she didn't really give her best recommendations on what was a hit menu item. All good though, we were able to make our decision based on other reviews. As far as the location, it was in a pretty sketch area and the inside on of the restaurant was fairly clean. The owner, Nana is a very sweet lady...I had the pleasure of meeting her during my first visit here. She was not there on this visit. I absolutely love this place honestly, however the only draw back is that, they don't accept cash and only accept CC, and also, they don't sell their yams as a side which I've had before and loved. You'd literally have to get the yams and wings meal on top of your meal if you want yams. I wonder why they wouldn't sell them as a side though I got the soul food meal as the BBQ broccoli taste so much like chicken... how'd they do that? The Mac n cheese was fire, as were the beans were also which gives other beans at other establishments, a run for their money. I wasn't big on the greens but they're OK. The corn bread is yummy as well. I do feel like you should get more portions for the price of the meal, since it's the size of a TV dinner but. I also understand that eating vegan is costly. Call before going due to odd business days and hours. There's limited parking but you shouldn't have a problem parking since there's street parking available as well. Easy to locate as long a your not speeding. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was because the yams aren't sold separately and due to only accepting CC. I don't walk around with cash but I prefer using cash at small business and kiosks. The mac & cheese is creamy, the collard greens are tasty, the baked beans are full of flavor, and the fried chick'n (mushrooms) feels like a fried guilty pleasure. Nana's is so amazing, they're legitimately one of the best soul food places I've eaten at including my time prior to being vegan. Let me start off with my vegan lifestyle is not a moral choice, but one of health and dietary restrictions and trying to compare protein replacements with the original animal protein food item doesn't always match up well, it's too soft, it's too chewy, it's too tough, it's too much this or too much that. In the case of Nana's, their food is too perfect, too delicious and in my opinion, the original doesn't have a (chicken) leg to stand on. With that preamble out of the way, let's get into the *meat of this. The *chick'n sandwich, the wangz, the Mac n cheese, the collard greens, the BBQ beans, the loaded fries, the every dang thing on their menu! Wings are crunchy, crispy and down right delicious. I loved the bbq, the lemon pepper, the buffalo these are obviously a replacement for chicken wings and a lot of places do a cauliflower bite, cauliflower wing, crispy cauliflower or something along the same line; many are good, but seriously no other place even competes with the level that Nana's wings are at. These are some serious wings that will make you not miss the animal protein. This is the chick'n sandwich to make you call home crying to momma. I told her I'd call if I ever fell in love; with tears rolling down my cheeks, I finally made that call today. While she was surprised when I told her it was over a chick'n sandwich, she understood after I described the crunch, the zest of the coleslaw, the freshness of the lettuce, the juiciness of the chick'n and bite of the pickle. She asked why it took so long to call her, I said while my son's birth was truly amazing and there's a great love and natural attachment there that just cannot be described in words, this parental love still didn't quite compare to the feelings I have for this chick'n sandwich. The mac n cheese, the collard greens, even the baked beans. There is so much attention to making the unassuming parts of their menu super delicious; it really comes through in every bite. Where many places might have their sides as an afterthought, Nana's keeps a spotlight directly on them. There are plenty of places that do vegan food either as a whole menu or menu options on their non-vegan menu in the valley; more than 100 from west side to east and north to south, Nana's really is in the top tier. Wasn't sure what to expect. Arrived early you know me. Opens at 11. But I could see people in there working nothing more irritating than the employees arriving and opening when I arrive. Place was clean. Super cold. Too cold for me but I dined in. Music was great service was good. Food was hot. Ok let talk about these rolls. I got them as a recommendation, absolutely soul snatching boys thought the yams were to sweet. Everything was perfect . I couldn't have enjoyed a better vegan lunch. What?? This place has a menu that's entirely plant based! And the best part? It's delicious!! Are you new to a plant based diet and craving soul food? I highly recommend nana's kitchen! I've had their ribs, their cauliflower wings, and their chicken sandwich, and it was all delicious! The ribs are just unbelievably tasty. I love the bbq sauce they use. It's a little different when you come into the place, you can either order your food through their website or when you walk in there's a tablet, and you enter your name and view the menu and order through the tablet. I think if your order has fries, I'd recommend ordering there for fresher fries, otherwise if there's no fries and you want to pick it up to go, I'd recommend ordering through their website. I bookmarked Nana's while in AZ back in December. Finally in the area giving me the opportunity to try the popular "Nana Soul" meal. Growing up on Soul Food & BBQ, those were the two types of food I really missed when I started my Veggie/Vegan journey 20 years ago. As time progress & creativity enhances, more & more plant-based versions are popping up & with good/familiar taste. This is the place to enjoy both Soul Food & good ol' BBQ - Veganized. To that point, the Nana Soul comes with a choice of Fried Cauliflower or BBQ Ribs (made with Gluten & Soy), Mac & Cheese, Baked Beans, Greens & a Cornbread Muffin all for $16 - can't beat the price. -BBQ Ribs, savory sauce close to real yet boneless = A -Mac & Cheese was ok, bland & similar to a box made, not old fashion = C -Baked Beans were good with just the right tang, yet a tad bit too sweet = B -Greens were cooked just right & spot on with the seasoning = A+ -Cornbread was way too sweet, I was anticipating the "from scratch" taste, not the sweet cake = C+ Side Orders: -Potato Salad was spot on just like Lulu Mae's, circa the '70s = A+ -French Fries perfectly fried, not greasy & with seasoning = A -Ranch Dressing tasted more like a Tartar sauce as I'm a Ranch fanatic = C. The portion outweighs the prices of this family-owned & engaging establishment with quality service. Rob, the young man behind the counter ensures all customers are welcomed & accommodated. I'll be returning sooner rather than later to try more options.
