We couldn't even finish it so we had a lot of leftovers. The portions here are massive! Please consider sharing. We had the Filipino lumpia, spam musubi, and ahi poke for appetizers. My personal favorite was the spam musubi! It comes with 3 small pieces. It's basically 1 spam musubi cut into thirds. The lumpia was a bit on the salty side, but Filipino food is very savory! My husband loved the ahi poke with the wonton chips. He finished the entire thing and said it could have been his entree. I went with the Lahaina plate because I was indecisive. I wanted to try the Lahaina fried chicken since that's what they're known for. I also wanted to try their kalua pig. My favorite part of the plate was the cabbage salad! I ate the entire portion of the cabbage salad. It goes well with the kalua. I also substituted the rice for spam fried rice. It was so much food. I think 3 people could have shared that plate! My mom had the kalbi plate and she could barely eat only 1 rib and the mashed potato salad. She took the rest home for dinner. My husband had the shrimp plate, but it didn't come with much shrimp. He wasn't too happy about that! I think he was expecting the shrimp to be like Giovanni's in Oahu, but it was far from it in his mind. We also ordered the jello cheesecake for dessert. I don't really like cherry jello so I wasn't a big fan of it. I did like the cheesecake and the crust. If you like cherry jello then you should give it a try. The atmosphere is really chill. Lahaina on the island of Maui now looks a lot like the resort city of Palm Springs...plenty of condominiums, time share resorts, hotels and slick shopping malls & stores. Back Home in Lahaina seems to hark back to the halcyon days when Lahaina was more of a peaceful, sleepy fishing village where the trade winds blew in the afternoon to cool the land, & ukulele's played to the sounds of the surf. The restaurant has a "local style" little store harking back to a country store where you can buy Hawai'ian goods such as island t-shirts, canned drinks, candies, cookies, & pastries such as Haupia pie, the filling made from coconuts. BHIL does a good job setting an ambiance that denotes a laid back, Kanaka style ambiance. We have a Hawai'ian friend who has deep roots in the proud traditions of Hawai'i, and so he let us know about Saturday night when a Hawai'ian band would play with many members of the Kanaka Maoli community in spirit would come out to dance & sing the varied Hawai'ian musical & Hula repertoire. Many of the dancers who came up to perform seemed to come at their own volition for the sheer joy of dancing the Hula. The looks of joy & pride of participating in the wonderful tropical Polynesian culture was most evident. Food here is mostly comfort foods w/ a base of centuries old native Hawai'i cuisine & infusion of food from other peoples who emigrated to the tropical isles, such as Japanese, Samoan, Pilipino, Korean, Portuguese, Chinese, other Europeans. Fusion cuisine is NOT a NEW phenomena. Its has been going on for millennia. In human behavior, there is nothing new under the sun. 1) The Pupu/hors d'oeuvre platter called the "Back Home Sampler" is a nice starter for those who want to sample a wide variety of Hawai'ian food. There are 3 pieces per item. a. Lahaina Chicken may be a close relative of the Japanese Tatsu Age. Chicken meat is marinated in sweet soy sauce with a bit of garlic & possibly ginger, lightly floured, fried so it is moist inside, a bit textured outside. Well executed. b. Kalua Lumpia is related to the Pilipino fried egg roll shaped Lumpia Canton which is thick. The filling is pure Kalua pig which traditionally is slow cooked in an Imu, underground pit oven w/ slow burning wood scented coal. The smokey Kalua pig meat is shredded & stuffed into a wheat based wrapper & fried. Very unique in that I have never encountered this innovative way of presenting Kalua. c. Fried Won Ton is fried to a teeth shattering exercise in crispness without browning it to a cinder. The filling is incidental since there is only a smidge of minced meat. d. Grilled Beef Sticks look like Japanese Teriyaki on a stick. Marinade seems plain, only sweetened soy sauce. Meat is rather dry & chewy without much meaty Umami. e. Filipino Lumpia is within the canton variety but the filling is rather dry & tasteless w/ lots of wheat based wrapper for a bready crunch. f. Spam Musubi: Musubi refers to the Japanese word to wrap or tie together since Nori/seaweed paper is wrapped around the Japanese rice sandwiching a piece of fatty, porky Spam meat. Nice combination of meaty with the sea Umami of the Nori. 2) Lau Lau is traditional Hawai'ian where fatty, white fish, pork enlivened w/ sea salt is wrapped in Taro leaves & steamed. The general savory "surf & turf" combination was credible, but it was steamed too long so that the Taro leaves came out almost black & dried out giving the leaves a slight bitter off taste. Japanese style steamed rice, macaroni salad w/ mayonnaise, nice white sesame seed studded lightly fermented cabbage slaw were the accompaniments. I chose a side of Lomi Lomi which means to knead or massage in Hawai'ian where in the old days salted salmon shipped from Alaska was kneaded w/ a mixture of tomatoes, green onions to leach & mellow out the salt from the salmon. Now with the modern wonders of refrigeration, the salmon is salted now in addition to the refreshing veggies. The salmon is not Sashimi grade so it has a more hearty fishy flavor. 3) Chinese Chicken Salad was a combination of different lettuce, cucumber, thin slices of red bell pepper for color, slivers of fried, oily, crispy won ton skin for texture. The dressing lacked depth of flavor & was rather bland. More mild, flavor enhancing Japanese rice vinegar as well as more addition of fragrant, toasty, nutty Sesame oil would have upped the Umami of this salad. 4) Maguro/tuna Poke (poh keh) was good with a mixture of soy sauce & fragrant sesame oil as the principal flavourings. Chunks of Maguro is generous, & lacy shreds of Limu/seaweed added a nice ocean minerality. 1-4a) Pitcher of bubbly, carbon dioxide infused lightly acidic beer w/ a bit of palate cleansing bitter hops was a good pairing to all the downhome foods. 3+ Yelp stars for a taste of local Hawai'ian kaukau that reminds one of the less touristy, slick, hyped aspects of Hawai'ian life. read more

My favorite part of the meal was their bbq and the Haupia Cheese Cake (don't sleep in it, I don't even like dessert). Not my most favorite Chicken Katsu (nothing too special about it), but it definitely hit the spot today. I did like the Katsu sauce though. Serving sizes are big so you won't leave feeling skimped. As the name suggests, this place strives to serve you food that you'd find if you were a resident of or visiting the famous town of Lahaina on the island of Maui. A good appetizer is the spam or Portuguese sausage musubi. The musubi is cut into 3 pieces for convenience. There's quite a bit of rice in each one, and the nori could be crispier. For a main dish, there are so many options to choose from. You can go the classic route and get a loco moco or some Kalua pork, but I like multiple options on a single plate. That's why I recommend the Lahaina platter #1. This comes with 3 pieces of fried chicken, some kalau pork, and beef teriyaki. You also get a scoop of rice, macaroni salad, and ramen salad. The platter is a substantial amount of food, but it can be finished in 1 sitting by 1 person. The fried chicken is my favorite. The skin is extra crispy and dark golden brown. The chicken is juicy, flavorful and a has a sweetness to it that's uncommon for fried chicken. The kalua pork is fork tender. The teriyaki beef is grilled and has a nice smoky flavor to it. The ramen salad is interesting..it's like cabbage traditionally used in coleslaw with ramen crumbs added for a different texture. To end your meal on a high note, the haupia cheesecake is your best bet. It's light, airy, fluffy and creamy. There's a great coconut taste to it, and the crust is soft and flaky. Service was friendly and helpful. The food took awhile to come out, but it was worth the wait. It's been at least 5 years since I've been here and I must say I did not have a good experience. The service has gone down along with the food. I ordered a simple moco loco and my beef was pink so I asked for another one well done and the second one was just as pink. They made me a third batch of beef and it was better but by that time my family was done eating and I was full off of eating my family's food. I love Hawaiian food, I just don't always love fast food - so I came to a place where life slows down a bit and the food is of greater quality. I went with Combo #2 and paid more for bacon fried rice. This rice alone is worthy of the five stars. What came in the combo was teriyaki chicken breast, thinly sliced bbq beef and their fried chicken which is so delicious! I am guessing it is marinated in something juicy or gingery because the flavor is mouthwatering and the mouthfuls are big with a breading that adds to the meal, not overpowers it. The bbq beef was great too - thinly sliced and easy to chew. The teriyaki chicken could have been saucier - it was a bit naked. I loved the ramen salad and the potato/macaroni salad. Both were mildly flavored and filling! I'd started the meal with a spam musubi and this one was such a great balance of seaweed, rice, spam and magic. It was one of the easiest musubis to eat, as far as how soft the sea weed was, plus it held everything together and I didn't get messy. The best part is the weekend evening live music! Love this place. It is just like "Back in Lahaina". I've been lucky enough to visit Lahaina on Maui's beautiful west coast...and this restaurant did a fantastic job of recreating the homey feel and delicious flavors of Lahaina. The good is delicious, service is fantastic, prices are reasonable, and location is very convenient. The only draw back for me is the noise level. The few times I've been here this place is packed (because it's so good) and because the seating is so close together in a very open area that is surrounded by mostly glass walls, the sound bounces off the glass walls and seems to amplify. Been here before but here's my review. We were there to celebrate with my Kumu (Hawaiian dance teacher). The place is kinda hard to locate and is next to a hotel. Parking is very limited. Lighted parking area and only one handicap parking stall. A rating on the door. Seating for about 90 estimate. Tables and floor were clean and a whole new staff. The old servers had very bad attitudes. Seating was reserved for us by a friend that got there with the band. They always have Hawaiian bands with great Hawaiian music on any selected nights. Our server Kaitlyn was very nice and greeted us with a nice smile and ran our drinks and was back in no time at all. She took the order and our food was at the table vary fast. The menu is three pages and very well laid out and easy to understand. If you need help just ask the servers they know. I just has saimin noodles but it was on the salty side. Had to have been the broth. Kaitlin came back several times just to check up on us which was great. This place was an accidental fine. We were out here on a hiking trip. And we stumbled upon this place and the food here was amazing. The service was on top of it in the overall scenery was amazing. This was by far one of the best Hawaiian food I've ever had to the point where I am now judging all other Hawaiian food forever now. The next time I'm in the area 100%. I'm coming back to this place. We first started to order the Ahi Poke. SORRY SOLD OUT. We then attempted to order the Krab Poke. SORRY SOLD OUT! (** We went get there at 2:00 and nobody stay inside. We first wanted fo try da Ahi Poke. Auwe, no mo. Den, we like tryda Krab Poke. Auwe, no mo again. What?! Fo Real?! Ended up that the dumpster in the parking lot had caught fire and there were 3 fire engines in the back battling the blaze (since the fire was spread to the nearby buildings). I was totally bummed when Back Home in Lahaina closed in El Segundo location. But when I heard of another one still opened in Carson, I knew I had to check it out. The ambience is pretty familiar, minus the big giant tree in the middle of the restaurant (El Segundo location). The staff is pretty friendly, the service is excellent, the food is yummy....what more can a girl ask for? Everytime I would look at the menu, I always get overwhelmed. I mean seriously, how can you possibly pick a dish when everything else looks amazing. This was our second choice for dinner because the first place we chose ended up being take out only. Very glad we ended up here instead for a nice sit down meal to celebrate my daughters 6th birthday with my family. We were seated right away on a Saturday evening for a party of 8. Cute interior with complete Hawaiian decors and family homestyle atmosphere. Staff is friendly and attentive and in their Hawaiian attire. We started with Filipino lumpia and Hawaiian nachos which had ground beef, cheese and tomatoes. These appetizers can be skipped because they weren't that great, fried and greasy. Just save room for your entree because portions here are HUGE. The fam ordered various dishes: lahaina fried chicken, loco moco, kalbi short ribs, kailua pork, Hawaiian BBQ chicken, and kids chicken katsu fingers. Fish tacos were brought out as a mistake for Hawaiian chicken tacos but our waitress caught that and took it off our bill. Sweet! Entrees were ordered with bacon or spam fried rice which were both equally delicious! We all enjoyed everything! On Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights they have a live band that plays Hawaiian music and Hawaiian dancers perform as well. On this particular night, the band sang happy birthday to my little one while she blew out her candle on her chocolate cheesecake slice. This made it so special and unique from the other restaurants. They even included her name! I know this is supposed to be the hottest weekend of the year, so I think this factor affected the air conditioning because it was warm during our meal. What a nice tropical island getaway feel! The decorations whisk you away to Hawaii! I think the A/C was either not working or was not working well, thus adding to the tropical heat.
