after a nice day in san pedro, we decided to take advantage of the great restaurant options in the south bay. i bookmarked this place to try + decided to give it a go since we were close by. en route, we called in + placed our order. the lady on the phone was very nice + told us our food would be ready in 15 minutes. easy to locate, small, yet easy parking in the back. we picked up our order + ate it in the car (covid-19). LOVED my meal! i got the short rib bowl (meat + rice only) + ube haupia slice for dessert. the short ribs came in a large portion + i was satisfied enough to save some for later. the ube haupia slice was meh, unfortunately. i wish it was a good + interesting as it sounded but i don't think i'd order it again. the hubs got the any two chicken entree plate (lahaina fried chicken, hawaiian bbq chicken, rice, mac salad + slaw). he thoroughly enjoyed his meal as well + had plenty to eat for leftovers. i tried his lahaina fried chicken loved the flavors. the slaw was pretty darn tasty as well. this place is an instant favorite + i look forward to ordering from here again soon. read more

This review is for takeout. Sorry there is no picture because the kids and I scarfed the food down with the quickness. We got 2 orders of Loco Moco and 1 katsu. The meat was very tender, the rice was the right temp and texture. The brown sauce was amazingly smooth and the egg was just right. The Katsu was very very thicc and the ratio of meat to panko breading was about 75% to 25% unlike another place in town that has it the other way around haha. There's something called the golden age fallacy. Basically it means you see the past through rose-tinted glasses. Commonly, once you revisit a place from the golden age, you're disappointed. This isn't such a place. I don't think I've been here since I was 12 or so. For incredibly random reasons, I ended up from DTLA to Carson. Obviously I wanted to visit a kitschy place that brings nostalgia. We had kalbi, BBQ pork, fish tacos, and spam musubi. The kalbi was good; flanken cut ribs in a nice marinade where you get to tear connective bits off the bone is always a good time. You get to be feral and primal again... except at least you aren't in Disneyland with a turkey leg in your hand scaring the children. The meat was sweet, sticky, and satisfying as Hawaiian style Korean kalbi tends to be. I was able to sub out the macaroni salad and rice for extra cabbage-ramen slaw. No problems there; if you're trying to be lower carb, this is the move. Note, I didn't say low carb or keto or whatever; the crushed ramen is still pretty much pure instant noodle wheat. The slaw has a nice vinaigrette that's a good balance to the fatty meat found here. The fish tacos were the weak point, but not offensive. Think non-breaded type of fish taco found anywhere through the more coastal parts of SoCal. Flour tortillas, a fillet of fish in mayo, shredded greens, and ultimately nothing offensive but also kind of boring. The fish is flaky and slightly more fishy than what would be called mild. You get a choice of starchy sides (fries, wonton strips, corn chips) and a scoop of macaroni salad. The fish is flaky and the mayo keeps it moist enough. They should probably embrace Baja California more and use some sort of pico de gallo heat. The BBQ pork is nicely charred. Good grill flavor comes through and the meat is still juicy with solid pork flavor. Spam musubi is always a must for Hawaiian restaurants. To modify a quote by Biden, if you don't make a good Spam musubi, "you ain't Hawaiian." The musubi comes out warm, covered in plastic wrap. Here, you get teriyaki sauce, a slice of Spam, rice, and nori. In terms of technical skill, it would be great if the musubi had Spam from end to end. That is, one end of my Spam musubi had a couple bite's worth of just sauce, rice, and nori before I got to the slice of Spam. In short, the musubi can be improved on here, but still get it. It might have been over half a lifetime since I've been here and this place might now be way out of my way, but I've got a new spot to frequent, once again. read more

Staff really takes care of you here and makes sure you have everything you need at all times. We ordered a sampler plate and 2 orders of the Lahaina platter #1. 9/16/17 1st birthday catering update I am very happy with my catering experience with this restaurant. Everything requested was set up via invoice/email and they carried it out perfectly the day of. The man who delivered the food and 5 sets of chaffing dishes was very professional and courteous. He was efficient and careful with setup. The day was so hectic and we had 30+ guests who failed to RSVP show up which caused us to an unexpected depletion of food. My mom had to order emergency food from a local chinese place but that's besides the story. Needless to say, all my guests were very happy with the food and I got compliments such as "awesome food, delicious, tasty and the food is great, who catered for you." I wish I took a better photo of the food but I honestly did not have the time to. I got everything in the chaffing dishes from this place. Pig and other sides were from other places. My husband returned the chaffing dishes next business day without any problems. I will definitely use them for future catering events and would recommend them to anyone looking for some good hawaiian food. *I will now know to order way more of the fried chicken since it does take up more space and leading to faster consumption. That 50th State. Plate lunches and baked goods that the mainland just can't replicate. Nope can't, CAN'T! Can Back Home In Lahaina do it? Nope! But they are close. Maybe what they and every single Hawaiian BBQ restaurant is missing is the islands backdrop. That's why none of them will ever be right ..... EVER! On this day we were provided with excellent service and the food was as on point as I would expect it to be from a "mainland" Hawaiian BBQ establishment. There are several things that sets Back Home in Lahaina above the rest. One is saimin and two is dah wonton min. Huge points for having these two offerings on the menu. And tree is the bakery. That's right! They have a bakery. Not like Napoleon, Leonard's or Liliha bakeries but none the less, they have a bakery. They have haupia cake and haupia cheese cakes. Cookies, banana bread and other local style baked goodies. A BAKERY brah! Right on! After today's dining experience in this restaurant, all I can say is, soon, I will be Back Home in Lahaina again. One of the best authentic hawaiian food places around! Been coming here for years and hadn't been in awhile since pandemic but they finally opened back up where we were able to have a large group. They told us up front that the service will would be a little slower with the number of people we had and they were short staffed (like every other food & retail place during these crazy covid times) we completely understand. However they were great and our server Dave was awesome! He was on top of everything, so polite , so friendly and great attitude even under all the stress of taking care of out party of 18!! Plus he was helping whoever else was dining there . He constantly made sure we were good & our drinks were filled and he took all of our orders correctly and checked in repeatedly! Excellent service and we really didn't have to wait for our food long at all. All the food was delicious. There island style fried chicken is like it is on the islands- somewhat round pieces of sweet and crispy chicken . They have the best wonton- they are nice & filled - unlike Some places where you're trying to find the meat inside , lol. And it's fried perfectly where it's not all greasy. The grilled beef teriyaki plate has strips of beef - no fat so it's really good . The bbq pork was also strips of lean pork and no fat - also very good . But the bbq pork char sui does have a lot of fat on it - however that is typical with that style. I'm not a big fan of fat but again it's typical with that kind . The loco moco is an authentic Hawaii dish and very good here . The laulau was a bit salty and a lot of times it tends to be a saltier type of dish but if you don't like salt I don't suggest it. Kalbi ribs were cooked well . We had so much food and overall was pretty good. The dessert was ok... they have a a Halipia cheesecake which everyone loved and I had the pineapple upside cake which was a little dry. Was waiting for my girlfriend to finish up work, and decided to stop by here for lunch. Had a very delicious meal! I got the short rib kalbi and the fried hawaiian chicken. The dish came with plain white rice. Enjoyed how the meat was made, it was flavorful and tender. The chicken was not super crispy on the outside or juicy inside, but still very tasty and definitely hit the spot. Would definitely recommend coming here for lunch. A great thing about this place is that the dining area is large and there was a lot of space when I came, so it was very quick to get a table and eat. Stopped in for lunch Tuesday when they opened at 11am and had an excellent experience. When you first walk in, on the right, they have a take out area loaded with bags of cookies, boxes of macadamia nut chocolates and plenty of bakery items to purchase. All baked in the kitchen and deliciously good. I would highly recommend the Haupia (coconut) cream cheese cake, amazingly lite and not overbearingly sweet. You can order half a sheet or a full sheet in the catering section, you definitely won't be disappointed! If you have never tried cookies with corn flakes mixed in it, try this specialty as well. As Hawaii people would say "Ono ya!" We ordered the somen salad for lunch. It came with very moist and tasty Char sui (pork), fish cake (kamaboko), lettuce of course, and a very tasty sauce. Another must order. The dining area is on the left side when entering the door. The restaurant began to get crowded, lunch crowd I presume, so better come early so you can take a look and familiarize your self if it's your first time coming here. They have a pretty big catering menu to check out as well, so best to take the menu home when planning your next big event. We ordered the fried chicken before and wasn't disappointed. We always had good experiences with this restaurant and at their old location in Manhattan Beach before it closed. The beef teriyaki was tender and sweet but that fried chicken. That fried chicken was amazing. A golden brown coating that crunched at every bite. Once your past that deep fried goodness of a shell you get the tender, juicy and moist chicken that makes it all worth wild. I would have to say the fried chicken was the best thing on the plate. I would definitely get this combo again. Lahaina Fried Chicken - Our Famous Hawaiian-style fried chicken nuggets with your choice of rice. My wife got fried rice with spam. As I mentioned the fried chicken is awesome. A must try. To finish it all off we might caped our mean with a little dessert. This place is called Back Home In Lahaina but if you're getting takeout from here, you'll probably eat quicker if you literally fly to the actual Lahaina to get your food. We got takeout from here on a Saturday night. It was the first time and will be the last time we ever do that. The pickup order was scheduled in the morning, about 7 hours prior, for a pickup time of 5 PM. Seems reasonable enough. My wife arrived promptly at 5 and the order wasn't ready. Not only was it not ready, it wasn't even close to being ready. She was told they were still packing the order and it would be a few minutes. OK, fine, it was a fairly big order. So a few minutes turn into 15, and then 30, and then an hour has gone by and the food order that was scheduled for a 5 PM pickup is still not ready at 6 PM. Finally, shortly after 6 PM, we got the food. I've heard of Island Time, but this is pushing it. And we weren't the only ones - there were several other people waiting well past their pickup time for their orders as well. It's too bad, because the food was actually pretty good - then again, anything tastes good when you haven't eaten in hours because your dinner is late and are falling in and out of consciousness with intense hunger pangs. But it was good enough that I almost - almost - feel bad leaving a one-star review. But unfortunately, I'm not grading on a curve. We did enjoy the meal, but it's hard to fathom ever coming back here given the utter lack of any sort of customer service. read more

Air was a mix of fresh sea breeze and earthy scent of an ancient forest. Summer's heat was stifling but there was cool shade beneath the big banyan tree in Lahaina's Banyan Tree Park. It was an amazing tree with 16 trunks and the canopy covered most of the park providing shade and home for small birds. Inside the decor reminds me of Hawaii. There are lovely murals on the walls and it's nicely decorated throughout. I tried the combo with fried chicken and kalbi short ribs. Rice was fresh & moist but not gooey. Just the way I like it. Flavor was mild and a good accompaniment to mellow out the meat flavors. Won tons were crunchy and I liked the flavor of the sausage inside. Fried chicken had a sweet flavor a bit like the kalbi and the batter was thin and crunchy. Kalbi was tender and full of sweet and savory flavor. Kalbi is among the best I've had in CA. Cream puff with haupia had a nice pastry flavor mixing with sweet haupia. Delicious haupia cream filling reminds me of malasada's from Leonard's in Oahu. Rainbow Cookies which were shortbread cookies with fruity crisps were crunchy and had a sweet buttery flavor. What a cute Hawaiian themed restaurant, entire place is very open and relaxing. Menu was extensive, I was happy to see the decent seafood options in addition to many meat and poultry items. We decided on tuna poke, fried noodles with HBBQ chicken and platter 2 with fried chicken nuggets, BBQ beef and chicken. The food was fantastic, meat was so tender, tuna poke was one of the best, everything was so flavorful. I had a glass of Chardonnay, usually I prefer Pinot Grigio but they didn't have any. We really enjoyed our food, the portions were huge, packed the leftover to go as late night snack. We wanted some desserts but they ran out of the items we wanted for some reason. The chicken was delicious and moist, the chicken teriyaki was skinless and sweet, and the beef was excellent. The mac salad was much ono! CUSTOMER SERVICE: Solid. Our server was friendly and polite. Island fried chicken is great for a buffet cuz it tastes great hot or cold and even the next day. I say the next day cuz the tray was overflowing with chicken. Tried the tuna poke (full of flavor and freshness) and the veggie lumpia. I supplied the easy stuff (rice, salad, dessert) Everyone refilled their plates multiple times and I got lots of compliments. Ono grinds here! Came with the family on a Sunday night. Had been before on a Sunday night years ago when a friend's band was performing their island music. What an awesome treat to hear jazz fusion music! Great, super talented band called the Book of Numbers. Very nice!! Mom is always impressed by their loco moco. Also had the option to do brown rice. My cousin was good with his chicken katsu. Happy happy for veggie/pescatarian options. My fish (tilapia) over veggie fried rice was scrumptious!! In the far corner of the restaurant is the dessert corner. My cookies of choice are the chocolate crunch cookie. Delish! Weeks later, I came back for a late lunch on a Monday afternoon. Was dismayed by the hostess who kept reiterating that they were closing soon at 2pm. She clearly wanted to go home asap and not serve the customers well. Boo, half star deduction. Fish (salmon)over veggie fried rice encore. Amazing again! And chocolate crunch cookies to go as well as loco moco to go for mom. As for the restaurant, it is clean with the Maui decor. Plenty of seating for large and small groups or a simple meal for two. There is a parking structure that is shared with the building and a few other businesses. If full, try street parking and lock your doors and windows! Most definitely will return especially for jazz fusion night with the Book of Numbers!
