Wow!! This place ticks all the boxes. The food is amazing. The prices are great. The staff is awesome! I ordered the basic backcountry burger then noticed that they have local, grass fed beef so I opted to substitute the burger with the grass fed. It was unbelievable!! The buns are house baked brioche and they are melt in your mouth goodness. I opted for the first when my server said they were local, organic potatoes. I was not disappointed. One of the reviews I read said the prices are high. I was so excited for the Backcountry Burger Bar. Five stars from so many, including a lot of yelp elites, poutine available, and beer on the menu. This is surely my kind of place! Sadly it is not. The Backcountry Burger Bar is not bad, but it is not good either, and when you consider the price and "meh" quality of ingredients it is difficult to justify the small serving sizes you receive. Let's start with the poutine. It is a very small serving of fries, this is not poutine made for sharing with the table or even one other person. This is a serving size of one. The fries are crisp, and well made, but I think they stole the gravy can from Miller Dining Commons on campus and are rationing it out as if it comes with a free lift ticket to Bridger. More fries will be bare than covered in gravy, and that is just something I cannot abide by in my poutine. Another poutine fail is the cheese curds, again hardly any cheese curds tossed in, I'd say fewer than 10, and they do not squeak which I always take to mean they are not fresh. Completely skip the poutine, it is nothing more than a tiny side plate of disappointment. The burgers are varied and tasty, I went with the Calamity Jane (bacon, jalapeno jelly, scallion cream cheese) and stuck with beef rather than bison. The burger was quite good, beef appears fresh, the jalapeno jelly was sweet with just a touch of heat, and the bun seemed fresh baked. The problem really comes down to portion size for the money. These burgers are about the size of a standard McDonald's burger, under 2 ounces I would guess. Luckily the bun is good, it is by far the largest thing on this burger, far exceeding the diameter of the beef patty. You will be having bread only bites. Tasty bread, but just bread all the same. The staff was warm and friendly, although after our order was taken we did not see our server again until the bill came. My beer was cold, but it was empty for a large amount of the time I was there with no one to ask for a refill. Overall I think the issue with the Backcountry Burger Bar is their high prices for incredibly small amounts of food that has only above average ingredients. Looking at your plate it is difficult to see where the high prices are going as I believe you can find a better burger for less money with just as good of an atmosphere elsewhere. I suggest skipping the Backcountry Burger Bar, it is just too little of everything for too much money. I walked away with a light wallet and what felt like an empty belly. read more

My family and I flew into Bozeman and we found this amazing burger bar. We all agreed that our food was delicious! I had the Calamity Jane burger. It was one of my favorite burgers of all time. It had jalapeño jelly and cream cheese ion it. The staff was really nice and accommodating. The bar area was located in the back of the restaurant and most of the seats were booths. The food is sooo dry and disgusting. You shouldn't have to rely on ketchup so heavily to get the bite down. I got the special of the day with blue cheese, bacon and spinach and I was nearly choking on every bite. The fries are charged separately as a side like most hipster places do nowadays, which makes the fact that they're soggy, dull and oily extra disappointing because it's like $4 extra. They needed some salt or something i dont know but dang. We also started with the chicken bites appetizer, which was 4 basic chicken nuggets. FOUR! For $9! It was tiny. We were visiting Bozeman and hungry for burgers. This place was just what we were hankering for. We got the Calamity Jane and Wildfire. I loved the jalapeño jelly and cream cheese on the Calamity Jane. The fried jalapeños on the Wildfire added a subtle, mild heat. Not too spicy at all. The service was impeccable and the vibe was awesome. On top of it all, Pierce Brosnan was here eating too! I guess he's currently filming a movie in Montana. Great food! My favorite burger is the Calamity Jane. The burgers don't come with fries which I wish the server clarified my first time there but it was still delicious! Very small serving for the cheese curds, but for the price it makes sense. Its more of a side and not a shareable appetizer. The curry fries are so dang good!
