Backporch is simply incredible! The entire staff is passionate about the craft, lives espresso, and loves to "talk coffee". If you order an espresso, chances are that you will get not just an "acceptable" or even "good" shot, but the best possible shot that they can pull on the machine that day. It may mean they toss 1,2, or even 3 shots before getting one that is as close to perfect as they can pull, but it is worth the wait. In addition (a rarity in this town), the baristas know the espresso inside and out, and are constantly sipping shots, smelling the shots, tweaking the espresso parameters (and above all, the blend and roast) to improve the quality. This attention to detail and group of passionate baristats are what you would expect to see in Portland at CoffeeHouse NW, Albina Press, Fresh Pot, or Barista, but still takes you by surprise to see it here in Bend. The espresso blend is always evolving and improving, depending on what beans are in season. It is great to get an espresso that may have a flowery finish this week, be heavy on citrus and chocolate notes next month, and move onto sweet cake and cherry notes the following month. Emphasis is on smaller drinks, traditionally prepared that allow the skill and interpretation of the roaster to come through. Very high quality green beans are brought in, and the roasting skill that Dave possesses is superb. Roasting is an art at Backporch, everything is done in small batches. They bring in a Cup of Excellence coffee from time to time, which is always worth the price of admission. Also, their beans are very, very affordable: what you would expect to pay at a lesser roaster, and downright affordable for a coffee of this quality. This isn't really the place to go for a big, syrupy/sugar laden drink: there are plenty of places in town where you can get a "Carmel Macchiato" or "Maple Syrup/mint Julep Latte". The focus here is on the coffee and preparing perfect milk to match that espresso. Ordering a big, sugary drink just covers up the hard work that went into growing, preparing, roasting, brewing, and serving the coffee. They also have the best French Press in town (no ugly, acidic drip coffee here) and an always-superb tasting, 10oz, $1.00 in house mug. Plus, Sparrow baked goods are served. They are still a bit "under the radar" so to speak, as I have never seen them advertise. It seems as if they prefer to let the quality of the product speak for itself. They are committed to building a true coffee culture from the bottom up, introducing people to the art of the perfectly prepared espresso or cappuccino. read more

I was 1200 miles into my bicycle tour of the American continents when I stopped in here and got a macchiato that certainly placed in the top three if it wasn't the best espresso on my trip so far, and I've tasted plenty so far in Seattle and Portland, as well as well as The Dalles, Hood River, Olympia, Medford and Ashland. It was smooth, with the milk and foam infused and not scooped. It wasn't the best espresso I've ever had, only because there was still an ever so slight bitterness, but much less so than most quality espressos. I can't vouch for consistency, but of the one that I had, I give it five stars. read more

Picked up a house coffee before heading up to Bachelor today. Atmosphere has a very local, casual feel. Lots of people sitting around visiting with friends. Coffee options are limited but standard concepts were on the menu. House coffee was a strong blend with a bit of a bite to it. Good experience but nothing memorable. read more

The Backporch location on Century is our go-to spot for morning coffee! We try to go every morning, but do miss some days. Loyal staff know our orders even when they are rotated to one of the other locations that we infrequently visit. Great vibe and I always like the background music. I'm so disappointed in what Backporch has become. I have been a loyal customer since they first opened as I lived only a few blocks from their first shop. They were warm, friendly and had a welcoming atmosphere. Through the years it has slowly transformed into a typical snob shop. I moved north of town last summer and only came in maybe twice a month. Saddened I saw the employees become rude and cold. The atmosphere is now industrial and Portland. This I can deal with although I miss the way it was, however, I went in a few days ago with my old punch card. I had ten stamps and was ready for my free coffee...... I was then educated by a rude barista that they do not honor the old punch cards because now they use a special stamp if you order coffee vs if you order espresso. "So you can't buy 10 cups of coffee and then come in and get the expensive drink free." My opinion is that if I buy 10 drinks from you regardless of what kind it is, its all about customer appreciation! If I'm loyal enough to have bought 10 cups from you then I SHOULD get a free drink of my choice being a loyal customer. Anyway it shocked me he wouldn't honor my old punch card since they even had begun making my mocha. So disappointed of what backporch has become. read more

I ordered a dirty lavender chai and it was delicious! When I went back up to get a pastry, I remembered that I didn't ask for alternative milk, even though I am very allergic. When I told the barista about my brain fart, she made me a brand new one with hemp milk (still delicious!) free of charge and suggested that I take the regular one home to my mom, who also thought it was delicious! My first visit...The girl at the counter is chomping on chewing gum. I ordered a med Latte and a (supposedly) peanut butter choc chip cookie, the girl says "these are awesome". Well... the barista was too busy talking to someone over the espresso machine...my med Latte was probably 10 oz.,most places I've been to a med is 16 oz. Average flavor nothing special. The cookie was a bad choc chip cookie ( at best)..and I think they left the peanut butter out of the recipe. I wont be back, there are plenty of better places. read more

Excellent. Had a great cappuccino. We are visiting from NYC (where we often go to Stumptown), and enjoying checking out the different coffee shops. Made the mistake of later trying one from Thump. If you are deciding between the two (as similarly rated), it's not even close. Definitely go here. read more
