Nice and friendly pub in Scranton, PA. Last minute planning for dinner while in town with friends. Lucky to seating for 8 people around the height of dinner time... Had to spend some time to look for parking in the area as well. Food and service was good. Luckily it wasn't too crowded when we were here. Baseball was playing on tv at the bar...and wasn't too loud. Menu: Lot of variety of food to choose from starters, salads, main dishes - variety of meat, fish and vegetarian dishes. They also have specials of the day as well. Appetizers:Jumbo pretzels ...mmm good! 1 order comes with 2 and for a pretty good price. Main dishes - salmon gyro with sweet potato fries - interesting to see salmon on a gyro. Cowboy burger with sweet potato fries - that hit the spot after a long day. Flatbread pizza was good. Service was outstanding, we had a new girl training and she didn't miss a beat. Friendly and inviting. We sat on the outside seating because we have a dog and it was great. The chef came out to ask us about ask about what exactly my daughter wanted, or didn't want in her burger. Honestly the entire staff was amazing. Visited Scranton and found Backyard Ale House on Yelp for luck. Sat in the back which had an amazing ambiance. I would love to come back when it is more crowded for dinner. For an appetizer, we ordered the sweet potato fries and mild wings which were made very well. For a meal, I ordered the southwest salad with grilled chicken which I would most definitely get again. I've been to this bar multiple times and only enjoyed it once. 90% of the time it is incredibly packed and you're literally shoulder-to-shoulder with everyone or nut-to-butt as some say. It takes forever to get a drink, there's nowhere to sit, the bathroom line is way too long, and it's too loud to talk to your friends because of how many people they let in. Without a doubt they are exceeding their occupancy limit. Probably by 2x if I had to guess. They just simply need to restrict the number of customers. Hopefully in the future they can add a second floor or a second location to keep up with the demand and create more space.Most bars are crowded so normally I wouldn't let that really affect my review but this place is worse than normal. Here is the real reason for my 2-star review. My girlfriend and her friends went to the bathroom and a male janitor tried to force his way in. The girls were telling him that they were in the middle of peeing and he did not care and barged his way in. Some girls tried to hold the door closed but he went in regardless. My girlfriend was still in the stall when he started mopping underneath the stall she was in. She felt very uncomfortable because of this and had to run out. The janitor did not give them a warning or give them anytime to finish. He just showed up to the door and went straight in. There's no excuse for this. Simply just wait until the woman's room is clear before entering or just have a female worker clean the woman's room. I hope that this janitor was just a terrible employee and that this is not standard procedure. If you're looking for somewhere to go on a Friday or Saturday night, I would recommend that you try somewhere else. If you're looking for somewhere to go at any other time of the week, then this place is actually nice when it's not busy. read more

The artwork for sale was cool and added a nice dimension.The beer selection is incredible, plenty of choices for every taste. I was expecting something slightly more upscale casual -- they have the quality for it, but it was a bit of a divey sports bar inside. Beer selection was great and they let me do a flight so I was able to try five of the seasonal beers. I can absolutely see myself going back. We were planning to eat somewhere else but parked in front of the Backyard Ale House and couldn't resist the smell of the barbecue, so we decided to scrap our plans and give it a try and we were not disappointed! There was no wait so we got seated and waited on immediately. There was a plentiful selection of beers for all tastes. We ordered the barbecue combo and it was delicious. The brisket was a little fatty but the portion was so big we could not finish it after excluding the fat. The smoked wings and ribs were excellent and extra barbecue sauce was provided which we made use of. The cornbread was so good we asked for more and it didn't make it to our leftover box because it was warm right out of the oven and we couldn't resist. Great stop! This was Yelp find while driving home from the Finger Lakes region. I had the morning after burger and it was excellent. So big I had to save half of it for another time. The bloody Mary here was also fantastic! The service was a little slow but we didn't mind. M ordered a breakfast burrito and he enjoyed it. I came here on a Sunday morning for lunch. It was steady but not too busy. There is tons of metered street parking available. They only have take out and patio dining. They have a small patio in the front and a larger one in the back of the restaurant. I walked in and was told that there would not be a table available for about another 2 hours so I decided to get take out. I placed my order and was told that it would be about 25 minutes. I ordered the salmon gyro with fries. I came back about 20 minutes and my order was not ready. What I found peculiar was that a man came in without a reservation and was seated at a table outside right way. Maybe something had come open in that 20 minutes I was gone, but it did not look right. The staff was nice, however. It also took a while for me to get my food. It was over 35 minutes before I got my food. The salmon gyro and fries were "OK. Nothing special, but served its purpose. Outside of my experience with the table, I would give the restaurant a 2.5 or 3. But that is major and customers should not be treated that way. The hostess was very friendly and if it were not for that the rating would have been lower. read more

Had a nice lunch meal! I came in with my boyfriend on a slow Sunday late afternoon. It was clean and spacious. I loved the beer taps lining the ceiling. We sat down and we're approached by a waiter who gave us the modern looking menus. We ordered beer and the smoker sampler with ribs, brisket and sausage with a side of fries. It took a while to get out to us but I was impressed with the meal! The BBQ was very fresh for it being a late afternoon. The ribs fell right off of the bone, the brisket was tender, and the sausage had a great smokey flavor. The sauce on the side was delicious too. The fresh fries were great. Everyone in this town is so nice. Maybe because DC is full of no nonsense business folks that want to climb the career ladder, but the first thing I noticed was that everyone greeted us, including the group of customers next to us at the bar. They have tons of beer, both local and otherwise and your typical bar food. We ordered the Drunken Burger which came with fried pickles and a thick piece of bacon. I actually thought the patty needed more salt, although it was still satisfying nonetheless. We also ordered the jerk wings and I was pretty disappointed in them. They were just regular fried wings that came with a jerk sauce that had the consistency of salsa. We thought they would be more like dry rubbed jerk seasoning. I guess we should have read the menu more carefully. Also, I felt they were a little too dry/fried for my taste. Even though the food didn't wow me, I really liked this place because of the friendly staff. They even honored the Yelp check-in offer even though one of the bartenders said it was expired. The ribeye philly was delicious. After a long drive from out of state we picked this place for variety and open late. The kitchen closed at 11 though so we were lucky. The waitress said everything was good, can't vouch for that but you can't go wrong with that philly. It was tender and the cheese sauce on it was perfect. My daughter said the chicken was a little dry but still good, it was bigger than the bun! The sweet potato fries were salted and served with a marshmallow dip that reminded me of funnel cakes. Cool atmosphere, food is reasonably priced, and the service was good. Even when my server wasn't around everyone else was more than welcome to help. The only reason for a 4 instead of a 5 was that the food didn't blow me away. All of it was fine but I felt like the brisket sandwich had a little too much salt for my liking and the hot wings weren't very spicy at all. That doesn't mean I didn't enjoy them, however that's why it's not getting the perfect review. I've been here a couple of times for drinks and was quite disappointed when I finally tried the food. This is located in the downtown area of Scranton, and it's pretty close to other bars and restaurants making it a great "quick drink" spot. I ordered chicken Philly with fries and fries were served after I had already eaten half my sandwich - I had to remind a different server. Additionally, the Chicken Philly was bland and not that great. I'm a big fries person so I was personally hurt when they showed up over-salted. They did use some sort of seasoned salt so that was a plus. I also ordered Spiked Arnold Palmer, which was pretty weak and almost tasteless, like sugar water. The servers were nice but slow considering it was not that crowded. All in all, I would come back in a group setting to bar crawl (again, great "quick drink" spot), but definitely not for dinner. read more

Piña colada was really good I definitely prefer more pineapple flavor and this was mostly coconut but it was such a good size for the price there's no reason to deduct there. It was really tasty like I said just not the typical combo maybe they compensated for the fact that I had no alcohol by adding too much coconut instead tbh. Food was great! I came in with a party of 12 who sat at two separate tables which meant two different waiters. The table I was sitting at got served with our food and drinks after about a 15 minute wait. When ordering our food, they were out of EVERYTHING. We were lucky to get the food we asked for after them saying they were out of everything an absurd amount of time. The waiter was extremely hard to get ahold of to get a refill or anything. Now the other table was the problem with the experience. Now mind you there were only 4 boys at this one table. The waitress LOST their order after about an hour of waiting with the boys only having their drinks. Finally she takes the order and it takes another 30-45 minutes to get them their food. They gave them some free chips to try and compensate for their mistakes which I appreciate but I was overall not happy with this experience. Backyard Ale House is a quintessential American/Mid-Atlantic pub serving a slew (an understatement) of beers and a relatively modest menu of classic bar eats. We ordered the soft pretzels as an appetizer which were decent and fairly average compared to the soft pretzels I've had at other pubs. The four of us devoured the two soft pretzels quickly -- having at least one more would have been nice. The cheddar-ale sauce was lacking in the flavor department, but the pub mustard was amazing, so much so that I asked for a side of it with my entree. For the entree, I ordered the "Just-a-Burger" with cheese and fries on the side. The accompanying cole slaw was incredible -- heavy on the mayo side (which is fine by me). The "medium well" burger, however, was overdone and charred, leaving the inside dry and tasteless. The thick, 8 oz. patty was difficult for me to finish, and I'm a burger fanatic. The fries were standard -- salty, greasy and crispy. I enjoyed them. The service and atmosphere were both fine. There's a very nice outdoor patio, but the unseasonably cool temps led us to eat inside. I would probably give Backyard Ale House another try if I was a local. It wasn't terrible, but nothing about the food was anything that would make me come racing back. read more
