Have eaten here many times and it's pretty good bbq. I think eating in person is better than take out. Burger baskets are a good value.

My son and I hit the Backyard on Sunday- Memorial day weekend after spending the morning kayaking on Belton lake. This place is a true gem of a find and has some of the best durn BBQ I have had. We ordered the brisket, ribs, and sausage platter. I think it was like $12 bucks. The Brisket was tender, moist and juicy. Ribs were the same and the meat melts off the bone. The bark was special, a nicely seasoned rub and full of Texas love smoked goodness. I bend the knee to the pit master. He is a true artist! The sausage was outstanding. Not that cheap Eckrich type that many places serve, this was some good Hill Country type of sausage love. The sowse (sauce) was good but I don't put sauce on my BBQ. Onion Rings were prepared in a thick crunchy batter that were a little on the salty side. Could have been better if served with a homemade ranch dip or some custom Chipolte ranch? OMG! I dont even know where to start. We came here for dinner and we are not from here so we had to seek the assistance of Yelp. Boy oh Boy am I glad we did. I had the 2 meat, brisket and pulled pork with potato salad and French fries. I initally wondered why we didnt have knives but then I realized why...that meat was so tender it was insane. So tender and perfectly cooked. The potato salad had the perfect amount of flavor and even the fries were crisy but not too crispy and perfectly salted. I also had a grandmas sweet tea which was amazing. The apple pie and ice cream....whoooooo!! Out of this world delicious. Literally the best experience. Now, we have to remember that a server can make or break our experience. Chelsea made it nothing less than the absolute best! She was so pleasant ans when we thought we were being difficult she reassured us that we were not. We were dying for some homemade banana pudding and when she thought there was no more, she came through with the LAST one and surprised us. Chelsea is the real MVP. Friday night was not the night for the Backyard. It was packed and after we were seated we saw lots of patrons looking around in bewilderment wondering when their food would be arriving at the table. It took a while to get our food. That was okay as we were not in a hurry. I got a brisket sandwich. At first bite it was tasty but as I chewed something seemed odd as the brisket turned to mush. I know they tout that their brisket requires not teeth but this was too far. So either it was held way too long in a steamer or it was pre boiled before smoking. My dining accomplice had the redneck burrito. He said it was ok but the meat was dry. We both agreed that this is a mid tier bbq joint in the Temple-Belton area. The Backyard is superior to the "3 Big Names in BBQ around here" Those 3 are Al's, Mikeska's & Scheopfs. read more

Pretty good BBQ. Not the best in Texas, for sure... but pretty good. Their menu is interesting. It's a BBQ joint, but you do not see BBQ until the 2nd or 3rd page of the menu. They seem to feature a lot of hamburgers and a giant stuffed baked potato. We ordered BBQ, and I tried the "Bubba Tater," which is a large baked potato, stuffed with cheese, butter, sour cream, and either brisket, sausage, or both. Comes out stacked pretty tall, but once you cut into it, you realize that the meat is just sitting on top of the potato, so it's really just about presentation. Flavor was good, sauce was good, portion size was more than enough. My family seemed to like the BBQ, and all finished their plates. Waitress was not clear about certain up-charges on certain items, so we got stuck with about $4-5 of "add-ons" that were not explained. Also, $2 for a soda will only get you 24 oz of that soda (which they bring to you in 12 oz cans). Would have been 5 stars were it not for those things. read more

We have been here three times for dinner. The food is very good. However, the service leaves a LOT to be desired. The first time, we walked in and all the servers just stood there looking at us, didn't greet us. Once we were seated, our server "greeted" us with "do you know what you want to order?". Later, my husband had to get up and ask for refills since all of our drinks were bone dry and she hadn't been back by. The second and third time, the service was slightly friendlier but incredibly slow. We haven't been back since. We may try again in a while to see if it's improved or service has changed. read more

Returning from a work trip down south, we detoured off the highway to pay a visit. Very neat place kinda in the middle of no-where. But let's cut to the chase, cause I don't have much time right now: Atmosphere: Clean and friendly - definitely "country" vibe, which works just fine. Value: portion sizes (combined with the ribs) are what saved this from being and even lower rating. Food: While the slices of brisket were huge, and were cut-it-with-your-fork tender, they just didn't carry any flavor. I found the pulled pork to be more dry than expected. We found this place on Yelp following our day at a local water park. We gave it a shot based on the 4.5 star Yelp rating. I'm not sure how it garnered that status after our experience. First, we ordered the BBQ meat plates for me and my wife and the corn dog kid's meal for our son. For some reason, it took about 30 minutes to get our food. We saw other people come in after us and get their food before we did. A lot of their orders seemed like burgers. But usually BBQ is already prepared and it just has to be plated. So we couldn't understand why the delay and our waitress just kept apologizing and saying she was checking on it. We asked for our son's meal to be brought out if it was ready so at least he could eat. That took a long time too, but that did come out first. However, after taking a bite of the corndog, he realized the center was still frozen! We had to send it back and asked for the kid's brisket plate. Our food finally came out and our waitress said she spoke to the manager and was getting us a discount for our bill. That was appreciated; however, I can tell you that we've been to plenty of quality restaurants that would have comped the entire meal at that point. As for the quality of the BBQ, it was ok. We've had really good BBQ all over Texas, so by comparison, this was average. On a preference note, I don't like my brisket cut as thick as this was. It makes it feel like you're chewing a big wad of meat when you cut a piece off. I prefer thin sliced brisket, but again, that's just preference. The pulled pork was decent and the sausage was good. I also liked the BBQ sauce, so that was a plus. The tossed slaw (coleslaw) was very basic. No other way to describe it. In an attempt to salvage the dinner, we were hoping to try some of their home made banana pudding that was supposed to be their speciality and only available on weekends. It was a Sunday evening, so we inquired, only to be told "weekends" only means Friday and Saturday. That was par for course that evening. But the final blown came when the bill was delivered. Remember that manager's discount? We were given a whopping $3 off our total bill, which was about $30. And that is the story of our first and last visit to the Backyard BBQ. read more

We dined here for the 1st time tonight and it was okay. The smoked meat was definitely the highlight so that's a good thing seeing it's a BBQ place. We didn't try any burgers so I can't speak on that. Anyhow, we had Brisket, chicken, pulled pork, and sausage between the 3 of us and the meat had good flavor. The sides were not so good (coleslaw and potato salad). I'd recommend sticking to the fries and maybe beans or the house salad if you don't want to chance the beans being bad too. The service was okay, but pretty slow at times. Waiting for the bill and getting to k pay it was a lengthy process and it wasn't extremely busy so idk what the deal was there. .... although the thing I disliked about the servers is that they didn't use trays for the first most part and I saw them picking up dirty cups when clearing tables by placing their fingers inside of the dirty cups and then turning around and serving food with no tray and the food touching their clothes and the dirty hands that were touching everyone's germs. I've been a server in the past so maybe I'm just being over analytical but right now is definitely a bad time to be passive about germs with the Corona virus and even increase in the flu. I would eat here again despite this(probably won't though)but I'm not a germaphobe either, just stating observations. read more

I've successfully used Yelp for a long time now, but I've never reviewed anything before. After finding this place highly reviewed on Yelp, my husband and I decided to stop in on our road trip. It was so bad that he told me I needed to warn others and make this the first review. When we walked in, it was very smoky and smelled like rotten meat. Not a good sign, I know. Husband is a human garbage disposal but he could only eat half of his brisket sandwich. I've never seen that man throw away brisket. In his words, he's had better brisket at a gas station. The meat was too lean, not tender, then they doused it with sauce that tasted like Wolf Brand chili. I had the half chopped beef baked potato. The half potato is giant, so can't image the full size. Same thing for me, Wolf Brand poured onto a baked potato with a weird garlic sour cream nestled in. Overall bad experience for us. Maybe it was an off day. read more

Not sure why it is full all the time. Gave it a go once with the family. I got all types of meats and sides for everyone. I think I the consensus was that the meat had been sitting much too long on the smoker, which would maybe been more appropriate to not serve it. Wasn't good. Dry brisket, on a moist cut request. I've been to Backyard Bbq 3 times and it has been hit and miss with us. 1st time Chicken fried steak and okra was great. 2nd time tried catfish and they must of burnt something in the fryer and didnt change out the oil because our whole meal had a severe burnt smell. seriously in need of a new fry cook..... next time I got chopped brisket baked potato which was okay but there was a seasoning on the brisket that I didnt quite care for. The ribs are good though. This place is nothing special, but alright barbecue. Worth taking a chance if they get someone who doesn't burn up the fryer. read more

Love this place as our first foray into Texas BBQ. The smell of the smoker makes you hungry the second you get out your car. Since it was late fall it was too cold to use the outdoor seating but we're coming back for sure to sit outside right next to the smoker. We started off with the veggie plate wich has some seriously large potato wedges, fried mushrooms and okra and cheese sticks along with a good dipping sauce. For main courses we had the roasted chicken plate and a 2 meat plate with ribs and brisket. You can't even pick up the ribs by the bone, it just falls straight off. Brisket melts in your mouth, so tender. All in all a great place. read more

Been coming here for years for a no bread burger version we refer to as the Coaches Special (with jalapenos and tots instead of fries). Do like the salad with chicken too, wife loves the catfish sandwich. BBQ and Bubba Taters are favorites as well. The remodel is great, TVs everywhere and liquor license make this a great spot in Morgan's Point. Definitely give them a shot! read more

I'm not familiar with the area so I had to rely on good ole Yelp and it did not let me down. The decor is very casual, has a good home feel to it. Staff is friendly and the prices are great. I can't fathom how this place has so many negative reviews? We go here at least once and week and are never let down. Great food, great drink specials, friendly staff. The portion sizes are huge. Best catfish sandwich in town. This is a great place to go after a day on the lake. My personal hometown favorite! I will say sometimes the staff isn't as attentive as they good be to refilling drinks, but not really to the point of being an issue. We have eaten here several times and have never been really impressed with the service but the burgers are pretty good, but tonight was pretty bad. We were waiting in line to be seated and the sign said please seat yourself. We were then told to go have a seat at a table so we did. About five minutes later and employee came over and asked if we cut in line. We responded no we were told to sit here. She then went and turned the sign around to please wait to be seated. No apology came. It was about another five minutes before someone came to take our order. We ordered the burger basket. When the burgers came we had fried okra instead of fries. Apparently they had ran out of fries and didn't bother to tell us. The burgers were cold but the okra was hot. Needless to say we will not be going back anytime soon. read more

We went to backyard BBQ with a party of 20+ and arrived about 30 minutes before closing time (I know, rudest move EVER) after a baseball tournament. We had one waitress to serve all of us and I must say, she was out of this world. The service was top notch from start to finish. She never gave anyone attitude like most would when you show up with that many people before closing. Everyone ordered a variety of food. We had the veggie app which was delicious and my son ordered the ribs and he claimed they were "so good". In the mix of everyone's ordering there was one mistake and I didn't get my cheeseburger, which was fine because I was stuffed from the appetizers and the side salad I got with the ribs. I told the waitress to just take it off my bill and not worry about it because I was full anyhow. She shows up with my check and a to-go bag with a cheeseburger in it. She was literally the best. I've given this restaurant several opportunities to do better than the last visit and it seems to only be getting worse. The chicken fried steak was chewy, the hamburger buns were too toasted, the ribs were dried out, the deluxe Bubba fries were nothing more than yesterday's baked potato sliced into fourths and topped with more dried out brisket. I don't understand how their parking lot can be so full at times ... maybe it's just the convenience for those at MPR but I won't waste any more money at Backyard BBQ. read more

Solid place to grab some meat! The smoke flavor is definitely prevalent in all of the meats - I especially love the Bubba fries that are giant potato wedges(perfectly crispy on the outside & soft on the inside) topped with chopped brisket, shredded cheese, scallions, and bbq sauce.
