Bad bean has the most flavorful food on the Outer Banks and we love it! We came across this place several years ago when it was in its old location that used to be Coastal Cactus a long time ago. I liked that place so I decided we should try Bad Bean. We ended up really liking it, and just this year learned they moved to a larger location in Kitty Hawk. If possible, I think they stepped up their game with the move because the food was more outstanding and packed with flavor than I remember. The nachos are huge and so filling I could hardly get halfway through my burrito (smaller size). I love the pickled onions on the nachos and their medium salsa. I absolutely LOVE hot salsas....but their hot is waaay too hot! They do try to warn you about it, though! :) I have only dined in the Kill Devil Hills location once - I prefer the Corolla location at Timbuk II. The fish tacos are out of this world....best I've had on the East Coast....hands down. If you don't like rare mahi-mahi, be sure to order the fish tacos well done. I know it's meant to eat with just a sear on it, but that turns my stomach. Just ask them to cook well and it will be fantastic! My husband loves the burritos - they are as big as your head. The tacos look small, but are very filling! If you plan on eating chips/salsa along with a taco - you really don't need to order more than one (maybe two if you are really hungry!). Enjoy! read more

I picked up takeout for lunch today to bring back to the pool and I am so glad we all were in the mood for Mexican. I ordered the bad bean Baja salad and it was so fresh and delicious. The chipotle lime dressing was killer and I am glad I only used half so I can pour it on my salad tonight. My fiancé ordered the 15" cali burrito with beef brisket (hot salsa and guac) and he said it was very good and he was still sweating from the heat after he finished it. My mom ordered the 12" cali burrito with chicken and could only eat half because it was too big for her. She really enjoyed it though. I picked up a side of rice and beans for our toddler but unfortunately that was the only thing that didn't go over well. We think it was a tad spicy for him but it will definitely be eaten by one of us. It only took 10-15min for takeout and I got there in 12 and it was waiting for me. The staff was nice as well and the prices were incredibly reasonable for the amount of food ($33). I would definitely recommend takeout or dining in to experience the food. read more

I was here on vacation with my wife. The food was amazing. I had the Cali burrito with the beef brisket and my wife had the mahi mahi burrito. Both were great! Some of the best burritos we've had. We visited this restaurant for the first time during this year's OBX vacation (dinner). Our party of six was seated quickly and our server was friendly and efficient. The food was delicious! We shared the Nachos and Queso Dip and both were fresh and tasty. My absolute favorite was the Shrimp Taco which included a delicious, tangy sauce. Probably the best restaurant margarita I've ever had- super fresh, nice bite- downed 2 of them in approx 20 minutes. I'm a margarita freak- I have been known to micromanage bartenders into making me margs without the lime green sour mix- just can't take it. These were AWESOME- I'll probably be picking up some of their mix to go soon! All of the tacos we tried were ON POINT, and the salsas were straight delicious. A favorite for lunch or dinner. The food is always fresh. Love their salads. I took my son and his friend for dinner on the way to a movie last Tuesday, we were in a time crunch. Of course kicking into summer season in OBX, people in larger parties waiting when we arrived. We were offered seats at the bar, which the kids thought was really cool since they are teens and cannot yet do this in the state of MD (oddly enough). Full house for Taco Tuesday. Our server was pleasant and attentive-- the bartender-- and we had a great visit. He was on the ball. I am a GF girl & always looking for corn tortillas which they have here (just ask). But this visit I opted for an entree salad: goat cheese and portobello mushroom salad with grilled chicken this time, LOVE it. So good! And a cantaloupe margarita with salt. Refreshing! The teens raved over their shredded meat (pork) tacos & chix quesadillas. Salsa with the chips was more like a pico de gallo, which I prefer. Win-win! read more

I wanted a quick bite and this was the place! I sat at the bar and got the beer special, some Mexican beer for $2. For $2, you really can't go wrong. The bartender also got me some chips and salsa (you chose the salsa, mild, med, or hot, I got medium). Chips were fresh and warm. Both chips and salsa were great. One mild annoyance, you get one smallish plate of salsa...you have to pay for additional salsa, no charge for more chips. I asked the bartender if he'd recommend the quesadilla or tacos. He said, tacos. The taco order is basically a la carte, so I ordered one brisket and one mahi taco. Both were delicious! Next time I'm in town, I'll be back to try more on the menu! read more

The SOUPS!! Wish they made their soups year round, their soups are always so good. My favorite is the roasted garlic potato and the smoky tomato bisque!! Mmmmmm. The tacos are unlike any others on the beach, and I waiver between the shredded beef (has a taste reminiscent of Christmas, with some allspice or something in there which is unique and very tasty), & the chicken. No ground-burger tacos here! My husband loves the tofu tacos, and he's not even vegetarian!! (He also likes the pork belly tacos, haha) The quesadillas are equally good, and The Shredder burrito (sliced steak, griddled cheese curds, garlic fries in a wrap topped with a delicious red enchilada-type sauce) is about the naughtiest, most delicious thing ever. Ask anyone!! No wonder they've won so many food awards locally....Bad Bean Baja Grill always delivers tasty food fast, and we eat lunch or dinner here several times a week so that's saying something. read more

So happy they moved. LOVE the new space and the food is still just as awesome!!!! We went 3 times last year and had amazing food every time. They have been consistent this time as well. All the tacos are great but I always go with pork belly special, brisket taco and it never disappoints. My husbands favorite is the Cali burrito. The smaller size is pretty big and the larger one is perfect size for 2 to share. The Fresca salsa is my favorite, but I heard the spicier ones are also great (just a wimp when it comes to spice). Margaritas are also fresh and taste really good without any of that gross mix taste... And their guacamole is also pretty good Was happy to visit the new location and it got very busy on a Tuesday night... So I am sure it will be packed on weekends and when season is in full swing! read more

This is my favorite spot on the island. Absolutely incredible menu. My favorite is the pork belly, but you can't go wrong with the brisket, chicken or fish either. Their hot salsa is very unique and delicious as well. The only advice I'd give is to up their service standards just a tad. But the food here is top notch.
