Sadly, we had a bad experience here today. It began when we were ordering and learned they were out of anything with potatoes and chicken sausage. Their soda machine wasn't working either. We opted for water and were told it was self-serve; like everything else. After requesting and receiving ice in communion-sized glasses I took 4 sips of water and had emptied both cups. While completing our meal we overheard that they were now out of biscuits as well. Sounds like they need to close for the day... Finally as we were cleaning off the table, a chair was snatched from our table by an employee to make room for other patrons and their baby seat. Not only was it extremely rude but, rushing a 6 month pregnant woman cleaning her own table is the epitome of horrific service. Needless to say, we won't be back. read more

I have visited Baker Miller's former location on Western several times, and after a recent visit to their new location on Lincoln, I still feel this place is a solid "meh." The space is absolutely adorable, and the menu offers some great breakfast and lunch options. However, the food is not executed well enough to merit the hefty price tag. A meal and a cup of coffee will never cost less than $35-$40 here for two people.. Yes, I know the ingredients are supposed to be better, and maybe their employees are paid more than average, but I still expect the food to taste good! I've never felt very impressed by any of the items I've tried including their biscuit sandwiches, avocado toast (incredibly small portion), ploughman's plate, and biscuits and gravy. They serve their entrees with a side salad which is a nice, lighter touch compared to breakfast potatoes, but the lightness is overshadowed by the overly salty dressing. On my most recent visit, I tried the sausage maple cheddar biscuit. This breakfast sandwich was DROWNING in maple syrup. I'm all for the sweet/savory combo, but this was inedible. I'm not one to leave food on my plate uneaten, but I had to trade meals with my husband to get away from this syrupy mess. I truly want to love this place since it's a unique spot in the neighborhood. However, I've visited at least a half a dozen times, and it's still a 3 stars in my book. read more

I've recently been trying to find a good bakery to get sourdough loaves, and stumbled upon Baker Miller as it isn't too far from home. It's really cute inside, but it was bustling with little kids, strollers, and yoga moms. Not that it matters, but it was quite hectic. I purchased a whole wheat sourdough bread, sliced for $7. Cute packaging and all but when I actually tried the bread it was quite gummy and seemed underbaked. Not sure if it was an off day but I didn't end up finishing the loaf. Toasting the bread did help, but not by much. I can't say much about their food menu, but I saw some sandwiches on their way to tables and they looked quite good. Both locations are good but they should communicate better between the two. I called Friday wanting a pre-order to the Western location and a nice young woman answered (maybe named Crystal)? Well, she told me to call over to the Francisco store. Today, I figured just to stop by the store in person to order something. Both the cashier and baker had no idea what to do and said that I should go to the Western location. Shouldn't there be a form? Even the Jewel bakery has forms. I have ordered from Baker Miller Bakery & Millhouse twice since moving to Ravenswood. The first time I ordered the Classic breakfast biscuit with a small coffee. Both items tasted fantastic! The employees asked me about my day and welcomed me to the neighborhood. Today I ordered the Fisherman's Biscuit which was just as great, if not even better! I love seafood and the salmon was very good. I again was greeted with such kindness. This time the employees were so kind as to give me a cinnamon roll and two different scones for free! I am excited to try these items over the next few days. Baker Miller Bakery & Millhouse will definitely be my go to read more

So basically I heard about this bakery where they mill their own grain and use all-natural ingredients and such, and so consequently all of their sweets are as healthy as a giant bowl of spinach with Superman's hemoglobin sprinkled on top. So I said, "Bitchin', sounds like I can eat as much as I want of that stuff" and headed right over. And you know what? The healthy sweets really do taste like healthy sweets. It's kind of strange to eat a cinnamon roll when the taste left in your mouth after each bite is whole wheat. Strange in a mostly good way. The BM cinnamon roll is not nearly as sugary as every other cinnamon roll you've ever had--not as sweet, but still sweet enough. There's a great balance of the grain flavor, the cinnamon, and the cream cheese icing on top (although I scrape off most of the icing). I'd say that the cinnamon roll is the main reason to keep coming back. Chocolate-chip cookie, just so-so. Ditto the pumpkin pie, which tasted all right but not as special as I expected; plus it left a slick feeling in my mouth. I wanted for months to try the apple-cranberry pie but I think that the season got away from me. They serve a small handful of hot breakfast dishes, too. I tried the grits and really enjoyed it. They arrange a ring of pickled kale around a pile of pale grits topped with a stewed tomato half and a soft-boiled egg. The combination of flavors works well, but I would have preferred that the kale and tomato were hot instead of cold, so then the whole dish could remain warm for longer. I bought a loaf of sourdough bread on the morning of the day before Thanksgiving, and it served me well for the entire weekend. BM sourdough is not the tangy San Francisco treat that you might expect, but is solid nonetheless. It's really just a dense whole wheat bread. On the evening of day 1, I sliced it open for the first time and ate a chunk with some Kerrygold butter--heavenly. On the afternoon of day 2, I served some spears as an accompaniment to my roasted cauliflower soup. On day 3, it was very slightly discernably stale but still made a nice peanut butter & jelly sandwich for breakfast. On day 4, I tried it with a turkey sandwich and it seemed to clash with the turkey and mustard flavors; but that was only a small blemish on this loaf's record. On days 5 and 6, I continued to eat it in PB&Js or just plain as a little snack, and it hardly seemed stale at all right until the end--day 7 when I toasted it to eat with a veggie burger for dinner. This bread lasted over a week from baking and was still 80% fresh on day 7! The decor in the shop is pretty minimalist and could use a few more country/rustic touches to match their personality. But every table has a toaster on it. Oh, and they have sage black-pepper butter on the condiment table which is pretty genius. I don't know whether the sage and pepper make the butter as healthy as the whole grains make the cinnamon roll, but let's just say that they do. A couple of complaints: First, for a bakery, they don't open very early--7:30 on weekdays and 8 on weekends. I would love to swing by here on the way to work even though it's out of my way...but 7:30 is too late for me. Second, they claim not to have a phone, which...eh. On the one hand, I applaud anyone who wants to march to their own drumbeat. On the other hand, it is just so fucking twee. And as a customer, it's really annoying not to be able to call ahead and ask "Hey, do you have apple-cranberry pie today?" or "What are your pies today?" or "Hey, when can I get my hands on some of that apple-cranberry pie that everyone else has been writing about?" It isn't very convenient--nor very green--for me to drive all the way over here just to check the availability of a product that I desperately want to buy. They've definitely missed out on a few bucks of my business due to the wall of silence. I started this review as a 4-star, but it was just wishful thinking. After going over all of my experiences, I realize that a sustainability ethos and a good cinnamon roll are worth only three stars. read more

It was decent and I love the vibe and the jam bar! However the meals are pretty pricey for what you're getting especially considering it is a counter service restaurant. We dropped $40 bucks for a so-and-so biscuit plate, a bowl of $10 oatmeal and two regular coffee. We're glad that we gave it a try but not sure if we will be back for their meals again. I know I am not an adventurous eater so I like breakfast basics. I just didn't find anything here worthy of the calories. The savory hand pie was just not appetizing-a mish mash of mediocre favors but the crust was amazing in texture. I am not a fan of sous vide and that is how they cook their egg leaving you with a pile of soggy stuff. The bacon was a little undercooked leaving a lot of chewy fat. The cinnamon roll was the saving grace, it was tender and had a good cinnamon taste. My biggest knock is the food was not hot and the manner that a woman was doing dishes was like she was at home and probably not the safest for a restaurant to ensure up to code cleaning. Updating a review. I've been in a few times since and the service gets worse and worse. It's starting to feel like a frat house. The open kitchen is nice, but when you see your food is taking forever because the staff is too busy messing around while you stare and wait, maybe it should be closed. Also heard staff speaking poorly of another customer behind their back (how tasteful). Maybe a closed kitchen would be better. Ignorance is bliss. Counter staff are not welcoming either. Well, this place is ruined for me. I honestly used to love coming here, but my last visit was a complete let-down. It had been awhile since the last time I came here and so my partner and I decided to come out because we missed their toast bar. Yes, a toast bar: you would order a plate of various kinds of bread and then you would help yourself to a bar of various spreads for it. It was wonderful! Was. When we came in just this morning, we were shocked and saddened to see that the toast bar had been completely removed. The one thing that stood out to us--that set this place apart from the rest--had been removed. To me, it's as if Cold Stone Creamery decided to stop letting you choose what to put in your ice cream. Because that's exactly what we got--a predetermined non-customizable plate of food. Don't get me wrong--the food was great. That's not the point. Why take something out that was clearly popular and made your restaurant unique--something that made people like me want to come back again and again. When asked why it had been removed, the response was, "people were taking more than one spread." Wasn't that the point? Isn't that why you charged $8 for a plate of bread? That you had to then toast yourself? Well, never again. Although their food is good, it's just as good as a LOT of other restaurants in Chicago--and good amount of which are much closer to where I live. So long, Baker Miller. read more

This is my second review and my second visit. Service was very nice. I ordered avocado toast and husband had grits and an egg. My avocado toast looked pretty but wasn't very flavorful. The grits were just barely warm. We brought home cookies that also had no flavor. Boston cream cupcake had about a drop of cream inside. Worst thing, they told me they won't have pies for while. Well I throw my hat in with this entry, the one true... entry king. Baker Miller is awesome as a neighborhood coffee/pastry/breakfast spot. I got the oatmeal and it CHANGED MY LIFE. Maybe this is the year of oatmeal, I got addicted to oatmeal shakes and now this. I believe the oatmeal is made from steel cut oats, or whatever the fancy oat is, and also crack cocaine because I could not stop eating it. At 7 bucks it's a tad steep for oatmeal but if you want the best, go here. I guess that is really the underlying theme of this place. it's the best but you have to be willing to pay. In most cases it's not significantly more expensive, and I have no problem supporting such a nicely run place dedicated to quality goods. I haven't had the pies yet, but SOON. So preliminary review: great neighborhood shoppe that I hope doesn't get overrun with gawkers from other parts of the city. I'm looking at you, old money from the loop (aka the Lannisters of Chicago). Between Pleasant House taking the savory pies crown and Baker Miller covering the sweet baked goods game, they should just buldoze the loop and replace it with a 10 lane highway so I can get between them easier. read more

The staff was very friendly (even though I looked like a hobo walking in) and the food came amazingly quick. The open set up some may appreciate, but I could hear every conversation that was going on. The meat had taste (sausage and bacon), but the rest of the hash was rather bland and just covered in a gravy to try and hide the blandness. This review is based upon my visit to Baker Miller months ago when it just opened and I haven't been back, so some of these issues might have been addressed. That being said, I was disappointed with my visit and I wish I liked it more. One problem was logistics, there was no overhead menu which is not very customer friendly, especially when it's unclear whether this is a restaurant, a cafe, counter service, etc. I was trying to figure out all this information and had like 20 seconds to make a blind decision with the paper menus they had at the register. Of course I felt rushed considering there was a line forming behind me, and all of this could have been avoided if there was an overhead menu or if the paper menu were more prominent as you walked in. The second issue, and the main issue, is that the food wasn't that good. My wife and I ordered oatmeal, grits, and a cinnamon roll. The oatmeal was ok. Nothing phenomenal and nothing one can't make overnight at home with oats, milk, sugar and fruit. The grits were especially confusing. I've lived in the south so I have had some tasty grits in my day and they weren't executed well at Baker Miller. The grits were under-flavored as you ate them, but then all of the sudden at the very end of the bite there was this spicy kick that came from nowhere. Confused? So was I. But was it good or enjoyable? Nope. The best thing was the cinnamon roll, so if I ever get back to Baker Miller I would just order a pastry. But tellingly, I haven't been back after that one time and I'm unsure whether I will get back. read more

This adorable bakery and cafe has limited offerings to go, but still everything caught my eye when I stopped in last Saturday. I took the Sugar Plum muffin and a sausage and havarti pie to go. When I got home I thoroughly enjoyed the delicious sugar plum muffin. It was bursting with plums and still warm. My husband, however, was disappointed to break open the sausage and havarti pie he was so excited for and find it was just full of apples. The one star represents the frustration I have had trying to get 'Baker Miller' coffee mugs. I ordered 8 and Dave said he would add one because of the length of time it took to get the order. I sent $70. And he sent the cups. From Chicago to Tucson they were shipped. They were not wrapped and 5 were broken. I've sent several emails and have had no response. Cute place but doesn't seem like they really have it together despite being around for a while. Their phone number is incorrect on their website. The phone number on Yelp leads to a disconnected voice mail. I went into thier store to ask about buying a dozen bagles just now and, despite clearly having about 14 bagles, I was told I could only purchase 6 at a time "so we can sell the others to more people." Not sure it matters who you sell you bagles to as long as you sell them but, alas, NYC Bagle got my order and I doubt I'll be back to this place until they get their business together. Delicious!! I went with a friend and had the oatmeal, and brought home cinnamon rolls for later. The oatmeal was to die for, and was a generous portion that I couldn't quite finish. The cinnamon rolls were gooey in the middle, the frosting was sweet with flecks of vanilla bean, and big! You can definitely taste the quality of the ingredients they use, and I appreciate their attention to buying fair trade items. The only down side is that I wish this place was bigger! We wen't on a cold, rainy day and they had consistent traffic coming in during brunch hours. I can imagine on a nicer day it would be hard to get a seat, but it would be worth the wait! read more

I've only taken Baker Miller's treats to go, but one of these days I would love to linger in their rustic cafe bakery. They have a toast bar which sounds so delicious--I really want to stay and linger next time. The breakfast bowls sound good and the jars of oats for home cooking looked good too. So as of right now, I have had the pleasure of enjoying their chocolate chip cookies, jam cookies and citrus pie. Everything was really good and flavorful. You can tell these are made from high quality ingredients--not overly sweet either. Despite it being a "chocolate chip cookie" it seemed like the healthiest cookie I've ever had. The pie was made with a citrus blend of grapefruit and orange. It was pretty tart, but the fluffy meringue on top cut through the tartness and the crust gave it a nice nutty crunchy texture. They offer Pint cold pressed juice and almond milk. Both are two of my new fave drinks. Really refreshing! Service is nice. The menu isn't huge and I know they've run out of items before. But there's something special when a bakery takes such care from beginning to end to provide a great product. read more

Good coffee and one of the best cinnamon rolls I've had. The density assures that you're getting substance, and the roll itself is sticky without being too messy. The highlight for me was the controlled sweetness of the icing. The layout of the restaurant is pretty basic with the added convenience of a toaster placed at each table. I've been meaning to come to Baker Miller for a while for their brunch and pies. My friend and I came on a weekday morning and found a table quickly. Counter service was fast and I ordered the biscuits and gravy and she got the classic biscuit and a muffin. Oh my god there was so much gravy and the biscuit was so fluffy, I didn't even have room for pie (okay fine I did but it seemed excessive after I also ordered an extra egg). The place and food reminded me of Bang Bang in the sense that it's affordable, comforting, and just real good. I'll make sure to come back for the pie! read more

Atmosphere very laid back which is good or bad depending on your taste. No AC on a HOT day but I understand that the establishment is moving due to problems like this. Okay, it's more like a 4.5 because they're still figuring things out but I have confidence they'll get up to a 5 eventually. The focus here is grains. Lots of grains. Everything is made of whole grain, with flours milled IN HOUSE with the little Austrian mills sitting in the back of the shop. The food you get here is super hearty, with the pie crusts and baked goods offering more texture than your average pie or cookie, leaving your teeth with something to chew after the first few bites. I like this, it feels right. The grain bowls are nice, with a bed of wheat berries topped with a protein and some vegetables. I'm looking at their current menu and sadly, it seems like they won't be offering the bowl with the capon chicken leg anymore, which I had and enjoyed. I think they might have addressed this with the current grain bowl on their menu but I did want more vegetables and some sauce with the wheat berries. The grits, however, were perfect. It would be nice if they had a chalkboard with an up to date selection of available items as that seemed to change frequently throughout the day. Having the employee at the cash register recite a list of what's currently available to each customer in line is probably not the most efficient way to go about it. Another minor quibble is the amount of filling in the apple pies - I'd like just a bit more. There was too high a crust to filling ratio. They might have tweaked this by now. This review is already way too long. Baker Miller is a nice addition to the neighborhood and I appreciate their dedication to healthy, whole, quality ingredients. Baker Miller is a babe, a total babe. It really is. I found out about Baker Miller and jumped for joy at another pie shop. It's hard to compete in a city with Bang Bang and Hoosier Mama already kicking butt in the pie "industry" so I applaud Baker Miller for also throwing their hat in the ring. On the whole, I liked their pies. I went in the other day and took two slices to-go (and because it was to-go, I omitted the addition of whipped cream since it'd melt as the day progressed). I ordered butterscotch and cranberry apple. Holy smokes. The butterscotch was totally worth every penny they charge (a reasonable $5/slice). There were three reasons why this particular flavor was "giving me life!" (No, seriously. I totes said that out loud.) The crust is first of all this caramelized, honey-like, brown sugary concoction that is one part dough and one part candy (at least in my eyes and on my palate it looked and felt that way). It was sticky, firm, crunchy, and doughy like a crust at the same time. The filling itself was custard-like and reminiscent of a Filipino or Mexican flan. And lastly, the flavor was on point. It was velvety and creamy. Now, the cranberry apple was also delicious. It was tart and sweet just like a good fruit-based pie should be. However -- and perhaps this is just my tastebuds here -- it left a strange aftertaste. Now, this wasn't revolting, but it was a slightly grotesque flavor I couldn't wrap my head around. Is there lard in the crust and did the lard go bad? I don't know. Anyway, aside from that, the filling was fantastic. So clearly between the two pies I chose, the butterscotch was the winner. The store itself is modest appointed. There is a good amount of indoor seating and a bench in front of the shop. If you order toast, they serve a variety of spreads (fruit jams/preserves, butters, date syrup!) and butters (salted, herbed). The staff were super friendly and I chatted it up with one of the bakers. In all, I warmly welcome Baker Miller and hope others check this spot out. read more

The quality here is quite high. I like that the fruit pies have less sugar than most; this allows the fruit to shine through. I just bought a loaf of whole wheat sourdough that is some of the best bread I have ever eaten. It has a bit of a rye flavor and is right up there with Poilane. Lots of yummy pastries too. I'm leaving off a star because the prices are high, but if you want top-notch stuff, you probably won't regret the expense. read more

Very happy with my choice--while I thought it was a bit on the pricier side, the portion size and the taste definitely made it worth it (and I don't even like oatmeal!). Absolutely loved the cherry jam that topped it; combined with the crushed pecans, it added the necessary balance of sweet and sour to the creaminess of the oatmeal. There is a reason this place is blowing up in popularity. Here's one reason below. Buttery, buttery biscuits....biscuits that would make you so happy. They are so great! This place keeps getting better and better, they have these chocolate cookies smothered in salted caramel sauce...ridiculously wonderful. Sourdough cinnamon buns, like really??? So delicious. Everything I get here is like a new addiction. I haven't had anything bad from this place. It's a bakery, it's a cafe, it's a modern cool place that has such fantastic quality baked goods. It's like homemade only better!!!! I feel so lucky because they opened in Lincoln Square/Albany park.....we need more awesome places like this because the neighborhood needs it and WILL support it. Back to the biscuits: they had a biscuit w/gravy thing that was so delicious but it would have been nice to have a little sausage slapped onto the plate too. My grandmother used to make delicious biscuits.....and dare I say that Baker Miller makes better biscuits than my grandmother? That might hurt my poor grandma Mary's feelings while she's up in heaven.....but damn, this place is so good you want to cry. Please extend your hours Baker Miller!!!!
