You definitely have a choice of bagel shops in Livingston. Today, I had a chance to stop in at Bagels-4-U for lunch. The store happens to be located next to one of my favorite pizzerias on Northfield Ave. Parking is tough, especially when the streets have snow piled up, but there are parking lots nearby. This is strictly a takeout place, don't plan to eat here. I decided on an everything bagel with vegetable cream cheese. I thought it was excellent! The bagel was nice and crisp and the cream cheese was piled on thick. Sometimes you order veggie cream cheese and wonder where the vegetables are, not here. A really good bagel! Their bagels are good and I don't want to sound discriminatory but they need more people who speak English. I can never get a good coffee here because they don't understand what a "splash of cream" means. One time I ordered tea. They asked if I wanted milk and sugar. I said no and when I took a sip I realized they put it in anyway. I couldn't drink it. They dump so much half and half into an iced coffee it turns into the color of pure milk. The first couple times I let it go but for what I'm paying for coffee, I need it right. They should put the half and half out for customers to pour themselves. I've been getting their bagels, flagels and bialys for years and they never disappoint. I haven't had their whitefish salad for several years. It was always chock full of pieces of whitefish and not saturated with mayo. Well, that has come to an end. The pound of whitefish salad I recently purchased was similar if not identical to the one sold at Costco - a concoction of mayo and I assume whitefish and a ton of salt blended into a smooth spread. One of the best bagels I ever had. Line was out the door, that's when you know that something good is happening. Staff was very friendly. I got a plain bagel toasted with cream cheese and my goodness l; it was live at first bite. The bagel was chewy, crispy and their cream cheese was one of the best ever. It was so good, that I went back for a second one. Finally before they closed went back to grab a few for Sunday breakfast. And would you know it, bagel was still good the next day. Best place around the Maplewood area. The workers are efficient and the food is great. Coffee is good too, they use frozen coffee for their ice cubes in iced coffee so it doesn't get watered down. I've had their bagel with lox (nova bagel?) with jalapeño cream cheese and it was delicious. All their bagels have seasoning on both sides which makes a huge difference in the eating experience. I stopped in this bagel shop for the first time to grab a cinnamon bagel on my way to work. I noticed right away they have rainbow bagels, a long sought after treat by my toddlers. I was going to buy two rainbow bagels ($1.20 each) but then I noticed that a bag of six frozen bagels it's only $2! The bagels are gigantic. My cinnamon bagel was toasted with butter and it was good. My only complaint was I could pick up on the flavor of a garlic or perhaps an everything bagel that was toasted prior to toasting my cinnamon bagel. UPDATE: I have come back to this bagel store 5+ times looking for rainbow bagels for my daughters. I don't think they sell them anymore. They removed the sign for rainbow bagels and they are never available in the freezer section. Too bad. read more

As COVID still goes on, it is so special to find quality places that are still open to the community. Bagels 4 U has been a life saver since I get to buy a couple dozen of these and bring them into work which definitely helps uplift a lot of spirits. The price is also on point! When you think of how "Jersey is known for their top notch bagels" it's because of places like this. You will not be disappointed with these bagels. Also! they have a couple of different flavors. Wow! Such a disappointing experience! I have not been back here in a bit as I prefer Sonny's Bagels in South Orange but I took a chance and BIG MISTAKE! I arrived 15 mins after they opened and ordered 6 everything bagels which were basically one side sesame and one side poppy; WTF. At that early hour I expected the bagels to be super fresh but they were hard. I also ordered an iced coffee with a splash of half and half. The person who made it gave me a coffee with so much half and half that is was undrinkable. There were 2 attempts to fix it but they just couldn't get it together. If the employees were a tad friendly perhaps I would forgive these missteps but the employees are grumpy and don't know jack about customer service and the bagels are sub-par. OK, so this bagel store breaks every rule of how to guess whether an establishment is a good place to eat before you try it: -Using the number "4" to represent the word "for"? Check. -Using "U" to abbreviate "you"? Check. -Using hyphens in your name? Check. (yelp is wrong to not have hyphens). -Cheezy bagel-shaped mascot? Check. And yet, you can get better bagels here than anywhere in the city. Better than H&H, better than Essa, better than places like Zabar's that actually have pretty mediocre bagels. Here, they boil the bagels before baking them, resulting in a bagel. Most other places? They just bake, resulting in a bagroll. I don't know why it's so hard to get a good bagel in the city anymore. Long live the suburbs! This place also sells frozen day olds for a very reasonable price. Check out their multiple freezers. They also have excellent scallion cream cheese. read more

I feel like I am in the minority here, but something has gone downhill at Bagels-4-U. I was a huge fan since moving here, as their bagels were always soft and fresh. However, the last handful of times, and I'm talking like at least 5 times, the bagels have been seriously underwhelming. They just don't have that same fresh taste you expect from a bagel, or from a place that used to serve such good ones. I thought the first few times, maybe I just got a bad batch or came in too late in the morning, but sadly, every time we have gone recently, the bagels are hard or seem like they have been sitting out for awhile.
