The sides are always delicious too. I normally don't like Okra but love the Okra at Bahari. The complimentary dessert and Greek coffee is always a great way to end dinner. The last day of school June 26 and my coworkers and myself went to Bahari to eat. I know how hard it is to be on your feet all day, I work with school food service for 20 years. On my feet 7 hours with a 30 minute lunch break. Am I a cook, a chief, don't know. My title keeps changing. What I do know is that I cook for 1500 students everyday with a smile on my face. But this is not about me it's about Bahari. Let's start from the beginning I made reservations for a party of 10, at 5:00 pm. 3 of us were there on time. We told the older lady on the counter that we had a reservation and she said ok and told us to sit on the bench for a little while. We sat and we were waiting for the rest of the party to come. The best thing about being Greek is not telling anyone your Greek. I keep hearing one waiter asking the older woman if he should take us to our table and the woman said " OXI" which mean no." They are only 3 and they asked for a large table". So we were waiting and waiting. Finally a young girl helped us to our table, and the rest of our party came. The food was delicious, many veggie options is your a vegan. The wine list was ridiculously expensive and not worth it.The waiter was a man with not to short gray hair. He had an attitude problem. The bill came close to $400 and we gave him a very good tip. The bus boy looked like he was scared to talk. The complimentary dessert is one small galaktoboureko,and one small halva, very nice but they should serve it with free coffee like other places do. We had a party of six on Saturday night 4/20, we also had reservations . Everyone ordered and everything was good until our food arrived!!!! A couple of us ordered the stuffed bell peppers with OUT-MEAT, our order was put on our table but we noticed it had meat inside. We flagged our waiter down and told him, he says they were out of the meatless... Really, your going to serve us something we didn't order and not suggest or tell us? I made a reservation for 3 people a week in advance. When I arrived , they basiclly said they couldnt accamadote me or my party. It seems that sometime within that week, they booked a larger party and didnt bother to let me know that my reservation was cancelled. I had to scramble to find somehwere else to eat and celebrate my mom's birthday. It was disapponting, rude. and very inconvenient. Never again. I love the seating area all the way to the back of the restaurant because it's almost like a mini garden with tons of plants and greenery all alongside the wall. Went yesterday (Friday) for a diner for the first time after hearing so much about this place. And definitely they didn't disappoint. They were packed and we had to wait a little bit but they were very nice , fast and efficient to accommodate everyone.The food was yammi ,our waiter very professional and fun. Went here for lunch with my coworker's. We were seated in the back room, which was extremely cute with all the plants and the brick wall. To be frank, I don't even know what I ate that afternoon; our boss ordered three bottles of wine for us so I was quite sleepy by the end of the meal. I do remember that everything was served family-style and it was delicious. There was Greek Salad, Fried Calamari, Grilled Octopus, Lemon Potatoes, Sausages, and Fried Zucchini. Service was slow, but that was probably the server wanted to give all of us some privacy. Came here on Easter Sunday and we all had a great dinner. We ordered the calamari and grilled squid for appetizers. Both were really delicious and light. The grilled squid was perfectly marinated. Entrees: I had the salmon with lemon potatoes. The salmon was really good but the lemon potatoes were really dry, such a let down. My sister had the snapper and it was outstanding. They give you the whole fish, it was huge but delicious. Im definitely ordering that next time. We were hesistant to order the lamb cause nothing comes close to Tacis, but it was really tender and juicy! Our waiter was beyond slow. So I just recently moved to this neighborhood and I was very curious about this restaurant when I walked by it so I tried it out with my roomie tonight. I have to say, I wasn't disappointed. I read the previous reviews on yelp and decided to order these: 1. KRYA PIKILIA - an assortment of their traditional specialty spreads (make sure to ask for some pitas with it, not the bread they give you at the beginning) 2. ELLINIKI - a salad with tomatoes, cucumbers, lettuce, onions, green peppers, Kalamata olives, and feta cheese. (Add some olive oil and vinegar and it's a simple but amazing combination.) 3. OKTAPODI SCHARAS - charcoal grilled octopus with extra virgin olive oil, vinegar, and oregano. (The first few bites were a little chewy but the parts that were cooked properly tasted great) 4. LOUP DE MER, BRANZINI - whole Mediterranean stripe bass. (This white fish was recommended by our server. We needed to add some salt to it but it was very fresh, cooked perfectly and enough for 2 ppl to share.) To be honest we were STUFFED by the end of this meal. It probably would have been the perfect amount if we only ordered 2 appetizers and 1 entree to share. They also brought us some complimentary desserts which I forgot the name of but it was awesome! Overall we were both very satisfied with our meal at this restaurant. The customers here seemed to be a mix of younger and older locals that have probably been going to this restaurant for years. It seems like a great place to go with your family. The interior of the restaurant was very inviting and since Bahari means "sea", the decor went along with that name and had some fish nets and ship ropes on the walls and ceiling which might sound tacky, but they did it in a very tasteful way. The food came out fast and the servers were for the most part attentive even though I wish he explained the different spreads to us when he brought us the dish. Between the two of us our bill turned out to be $75 which is very reasonable for this quality of food especially since we both had a glass of wine with our meal. Tasty well-priced Greek food conveniently close to (read: almost directly under) the N/Q train at Broadway. Everything we tried was delicious: mixed dip plate with pita, Greek salad (the one without the lettuce), chargrilled octopus, saganaki, smelts, whiting, lamb chops, and keftedes. Lemon potatoes are indeed yummy. And dessert is indeed on the house. The cheap carafe of house white was very drinkable, which is all you can really expect of a house wine anyway. It has been over a year since I've had Greek food..partially because it is usually just me and my fiance and a place like this warrants a few other mouths just so we can try different dishes, and partially because well, we wanted to keep that memory of the delicious food we had when we were in Santorini and Athens. Well, this place sure surprised us! The restaurant is fairly large - you would not expect it when you walked in, but they have 2 dining rooms. Service was wonderful. My fiancee picked a bottle of white wine for us that was refreshing, light, some pear flavors and mildly sweet. - Krya Pikilia which is an assortment of the traditional Greek spreads (taramosalata, tzatziki, skordalia, melintzanosalata, tyrokafteri) - all were delicious paired with the bread. - Kalamarakia Scharas (grilled marinated squid) & Oktapodi Scharas (charcoal grilled octopus sprinkled with virgin olive oil, vinegar, and oregano) - both were equally delicious, especially the grilled bits of the tentacles on the 2nd dish. So yummy, so flavorful! - Spanakopita (spinach pie with scallions, feta cheese and freshly-baked phyllo dough): I was not a fan of. It was lukewarm, and seemed like it sat there for a long time. I do not recommend this at all. - Loup de mer, Branzini (whole Mediterranean stripe bass): was absolutely delicious. Very flavorful, no sauce needed. You can't go wrong with this. Not a terribly large fish, but I was able to split it 6 ways since we had so many other dishes to split. You can ask them to debone it! - Kotopoulo Souvlaki (marinated chicken breast cubes on a skewer); mixed with some green and red peppers and onion. They are much thicker cuts than what you would get on the street, and it is 1 large skewer per plate. Nothing of note here. Decent, but it did not wow me in terms of flavor. - Mousakas (layers of eggplant, potatoes, ground beef, topped with béchamel sauce): I had been craving for this for awhile and it was only alright. I was slightly disappointed that it wasn't as hot as a casserole should be or that the flavors and the sauce did not wow me like I remembered it to be. - Gemista me Kima (2 large green peppers stuffed with tomatoes, rice, ground beef and herbs): You can't go wrong with a simple dish like this Sides: rice pilaf, okra and roasted lemon potatoes. Okra was a little on the mushier side, probably cooked a little too long in the oven, but nonetheless still very good. The potatoes were not saturated with lemon flavor, just a hint so it was perfect for me. We were so full, we could not possibly order dessert on top of it, but they gave each of us a small square piece of a classic semolina pudding/cake. It was light and not too sweet. I haven't had one before, but this was pretty addicting! All in all, the meal was pretty good and the price was not bad at all considering we also had a bottle of wine. My fiance and I were planning to go to Sanford's for dinner tonight and upon hearing there was a thirty minute wait, decided to wander down Broadway in search of other options. I had always passed Bahari's but never stopped, because of the setup. It's silly, but if I can't see people eating in the restaurant, I'm not likely to be drawn it. At Bahari's, you can see into the kitchen, and the seating is further back. Decided to give it a try today, and will be back in the future. The place is very, very clean, obvious from the fact that you can literally peer into thier kitchen from the street. Once you get in, the interior is light and opening with a bit of a nautical twist (ropes hanging from the ceiling.) I started with a glass of house white wine (yum) and a plate of tzatziki (double yum with a slight kick). They were out of my first choice (baked fish with tomatoes, onions, garlic, and herbs) so I decided on the sliced lamb and my fiance opted for the red snapper. For sides, we decided on potatoes and string beans. Everything was sublime - very simple flavors to enhance the meals - only served with olive oil/salt & pepper. Also, we got a small slice of a complimentary dessert - lots of phyllo and some sponge cake. It was the cherry on top. Our timing was excellent as there was lively greek music for an hour, which included people getting up and dancing to the tunes. I really felt as though I was dining in Greece - very nice meal and rather reasonable. Come next time, I plan to try the grilled octopus everyone is raving about. My husband and I came here for the first time last night for date night dinner. A friend of ours recommended it and we were itching to try a new place. We walked in on a Saturday night and it was super busy. The hostess was on the phone taking an order and didn't really greet me but one of the waiters took my name down and I waited back on line. We were seated about 15 minutes later. I noticed a lot of the customers kissing the older hostess on the cheek so I figured it was a neighborhood favorite. They served us free bread which was decent. We ordered calamari for starters and they were delicious! Next was the pork skewers with vegetable rice. Delicious pork but the rice could be better. A little soggy. In the end, we received complimentary desserts. Not sure what they were, kind of spongy and bumpy with a hard candy convering at the top. He finished it but I didn't eat mine. Astoria is without a doubt the capital of anything Hellenic. And if you're looking for some delicious Greek cuisine, look no further than Bahari Estiatorio. With fresh fish, delicious meze and a great Greek vibe, this place puts out quite the feast. I've been several times and I enjoy it every time. The menu is quite large so don't worry if you need to ask questions. The staff is very friendly and more than happy to help. I highly recommend the Kria Pikilia, or Cold Mix. It's an assortment of cold mezes including taramosalata, tsatsiki, skordalia, melintsanosalata, and tirokafteri. What are they? They're delicious. That's what they are. Pure, garlicky deliciousness. And they come with (stale) bread for dipping. The saganaki is also quite delicious but it's breaded and deep-fried instead of pan-fried and flambé as I am used to. Any of the grilled fish are served beautifully. You cannot go wrong there. If you're looking for a grilled meat, I suggest you try the biftekia. They're essentially Greek style burger patties seasoned to perfection and served with tsatsiki for dipping. Yum! And of course, dinner comes with free dessert. A delicious serving of galaktoboureko, which is my favorite dessert of all time. As far as cons are concerned, I have a few. The first is the bread that is served upon seating and with the appetizers. It's stale. Can I get some toasted action or maybe some fresh bread? My second complaint is the way the food is brought out. If you ordered lots of food, be prepared for it to come out randomly. You might get 1 plate at first. Then 2 plates 5 minutes later. Then another plate 15 minutes later. The freshness makes up for this fact but when you're in a big group of hungry people, this is dangerous territory. read more

I ordered the skordalia (which by now I can say with a Greek accent) and the orzo. The portions were very generous for the small $11 bill, and the service for takeout was super quick. My most recent visit to this restaurant has me questioning how sanitary their delicious food is. Four of us went to lunch and decided to order a few different appetizers instead of entrees. We got two different dips with pita bread to start. We received the dips and waited for the pita to arrive. And waited, and waited. Until we finally got the waitresses attention and asked where it was. She didn't offer an apology just an excuse, this also happened at different times throughout the meal. The grilled octopus app was basically three small pieces of octopus on a large plate with about an inch of garlic oil. While it tasted delicious the very small portion was definitely not worth the hefty price tag. But the part that makes me question the food and the restaurant overall is this - a waiter brought our table marinara sauce. We didn't know what it was for since nothing we ordered came with it. But since there was never anyone around to ask we assumed it was for the bread and a few people tasted it. About 15 minutes later the waitress comes to check on the table and notices the marinara sauce - she goes "this is not for you, this is for that table" - then she grabs the marinara and puts it on the other table. So gross. Usually if it's a mistake like that you get some new sauce for the correct table or at east the waiter asks if you tried it and still gets new sauce for the other table. There were no questions just a swap. The other table had no idea and just ate it. GROSS. GROSS. GROSS. They do give you free dessert at the end which is a nice touch. Our waitress called it "mandatory dessert" which kind of ruined the gesture for us I'm giving three stars because I'm torn about this place. I was born and raised in Astoria, so I like to tell myself that I know Greek food. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, with colorful decor that helped set the mood for a relaxing dinner. I've been here twice now, and both times I had to start with the Krya Pikilia platter. This is an appetizer that samples the different sauces and dips. Get the large one for $14 because you won't believe how tasty each one is. Taramosalata, Tzatziki, Skordalia, Melintzanosalata, Tyrokafteri all come on a plate with cucumber slices, olives, and tomatoes. Make sure you ask for a plate of warm, toasted pita to dip with, as the French bread that they bring you first does not bring out the true flavors. My brother had the Galeos, which was the grilled baby shark with skordalia. The portion was fairly small, but made up for it with robust flavor. I had the Lahanodolmades, which are similar to their classic stuffed grape leaves, but they are cabbage leaves stuffed with rice and ground beef. Over each one, they drizzled a lemony sauce, which at first did not seem appropriate with the cabbage, but after I tried it, I was convinced that they made the proper choice. At the end of the meal, they brought out a small plate with two different desserts for each of us. This was on the house, and both were delicious. One was a creamy custard baked in filo, called Galaktoboureko, which was absolutely scrumptious. The other was a small square of hard cake or something of the sort, which had a cinnamon/ginger flavor to it, and was also quite good. The service was a little slow, with our waitress being quite unreachable. Empty glasses were slow to get refilled, and most of her time out on the floor was spent chatting with a table who I assume her to be acquainted with. Asking for my check took a while, with numerous inquiries put in to the busboys, and finally it came right before I totally lost my cool. All in all, the food is phenomenal, and you should go. One of the best Greek food places in Astoria. Very understated in decor and overall appearance, but the food is very good. Fish is prepared whole and is on display up front for you to choose. It is grilled and the lemon olive oil sauce draws out the taste of the fish - whether is the lavraki or the snapper....or any other fish. Meats are also popular with souvlaki being excellent - succulent pieces of pork or chicken. Portions are generous and accompanied by Greek style vegetables - okra, arakas (peas in tomato with anise) etc. Home cooked foods are always available and the stuffed vegetables, pastitsio etc are favorites.
