Went here with a group on a Saturday. The place was super crowded with a long wait for a table. The dips appetizer was good and probably the best part of the meal. The Greek salad looked great but had no dressing whatsoever on it. I was wondering if someone just forgot to put it on or if they just don't add dressing to their salads. The chicken we ordered for dinner was over cooked and something I could certainly make at home. The lemon potatoes were okay, but I have had better elsewhere. The waiter never asked us if we wanted coffee or dessert with our meal- even though they do give you complimentary dessert (small pieces.) This restaurant is absolutely amazing! I have been here twice, and loved it both times. Recently, I went with two friends on a Saturday evening, and we were seated immediately. The waitstaff is incredibly nice and welcoming. The restaurant is also huge! You are served bread with butter, olive oil, and vinegar upon sitting down, and even the bread is great - fluffy on the inside and crunchy outside. I started with the avgolemono soup, a lemon and egg soup with chicken and veggies. For $4, the portion is enormous! The soup was mellow, savory, and somewhat creamy, with a generous amount of tender shredded chicken and veggies. My friends split the feta saganaki (lightly fried feta with lemon). I tried a piece, and it was absolutely outstanding! The feta was rich, creamy, and just delicious, with a light crunchy crust and a lemony bite to it that complemented the feta quite nicely. For dinner I ordered the kalamarakia scharas (grilled and marinated squid) with a side of okra (sides are included with all entrees). The squid was ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS and extremely generously portioned. The entree includes four WHOLE squids. They are grilled to perfection in olive oil, salt, pepper, and some other simple seasonings (a bit of rosemary maybe?). It all tasted melt-in-your-mouth delicious, savory with a bit of a nice briny flavor to it. The tentacles were especially good, as these were a bit charred and very flavorful. The stewed okra was quite good as well. The okra is soft and richly flavored with olive oil, tomatoes, onions, and some seasoning. One of my friends had the souvlaki hirino (pork souvlaki) and absolutely loved it. I tried a piece, and the pork was rich, tender and extremely flavorful, and clearly a very good and well-cooked cut of meat. My other friend had the ortykia scharas (marinated quails). This came with three whole quails grilled on the bone. I sampled a bit, and this entree was also delicious - tender and super flavorful. Both of my friends had the lemony potatoes as their side, which were also quite good. Though simple, they had a burst of delicious tart flavor. Last time I went I ordered the kotopoulo souvlaki (chicken souvlaki) with the tzatziki sauce and a side of okra, and I would also highly recommend this. The chicken, as with all of the meats at this restaurant, is tender and flavorful, and the veggies tasted amazingly fresh. The tzatziki is out-of-this-world delicious. Hands-down the best tzatziki sauce I have ever had. Finally, it should be noted that all meals come with a delicious free dessert! This place has fantastic food, service, and prices, and I hope to come back again soon! read more

My faves are the grilled calamari, rib eye steak, peas and artichokes side, prasini , eleniki salad and I've also had the dorado fish. Drove out for a special lunch on a weekday. We sat outside on a perfect day. We felt transported to Greece, save for the Astoria traffic. The bottle of olive oil on the table is a must try. It's so green and delicious. I drowned a pillowy soft piece of bread before we ordered a thing. For lunch, we split the dip sampler, grilled squid, and lamb chops. The eggplant, feta and yogurt dips were my favorites. Creamy, hint of spice on the most delicious toasted pita. My bf mopped up the squid, not my cup of tea although it was seasoned perfectly. The lamb chops were the star of this lunch. Every bite was the most delicious bite of tender juicy meat. Not gamey at all. Exceptional. It's not that the servers are unpleasant, it's simply that it's next to impossible to get service. After being seated for 10 minutes, we tracked one of them down simply to give us menus! Then we wait and wait till they take our order. The food came out timely, but that was the end of the service. No checking back, no asking if we'd like another drink (we tracked down another waiter for that). Then we wait and wait after we ask for our check. You get the picture. I used to really love Bahari until tonight. The manager was horrible to my table. We had ordered a slew of appetizers and were waiting for main courses when she came over to our table and started telling us that if we were going to be 8 people instead of 10, that we should have told them as soon as we walked in. We tried to explain that we didn't know that two people weren't showing up until we were already seated. The manager wouldn't listen. I switched to telling this to her in Greek and she proceeds to tell us that we also came in late and shouldn't have been seated until our whole party was there. If that was a restaurant policy, they shouldn't have seated us. It isn't on us to not seat ourselves without the whole table. The exchange soured what had been a good night, as well as my own memories of the place in coming there for my yiayia's makaria and on numerous occasions with my family. The place is dingy and the atmosphere and decor is blah. Found the food to be less than good. Fried calamari portion we got was small as opposed to the single lady sitting across from us had a much bigger portion. Tasteless and chewy beyond consumption. Not so fresh either. Absolutely no dip sauce to go with it. Saganaki was fried on dark side which is fine but the cheese didnt even have a chance to melt. Perhaps they shouldn't of had the oil burning so high. The souvlaki dinner consisted of 3 pork souvlaki sticks with a tablespoon of tzatziki which had big chopped pieces of cucumbers with 6 strands of white onion. No lettuce no tomatoes nothing. Souvlaki was tender but again lacking in flavor and spices. Overall I wouldn't recommend at all and won't be trying it again. read more

This place deserves all of its great reviews! I have tried most of the Greek restaurants throughout Astoria and this was one my favorites. I am just so surprised that I never tried it or even heard of before. I just did a random Yelp search after finishing up a late night of work and came upon it. The branzino was PERFECT! I couldn't ask for it to be seasoned and prepared any better! Such a healthy meal that leaves you feeling good after eating! The roasted eggplant salad, Melintzanosalata, is so good that I thought about it for weeks afterwards. The lemon potatoes were also delicious. Lemon potatoes and seafood go hand in hand in my opinion. I ordered this food to go and it was packed beautifully and prepared quickly. WORST customer service EVER! What a disaster! I brought my friends here to celebrate an event. When we arrived we were told the wait would be abt 15 min. HOWEVER, our party of 3 was routinely skipped over by other parties who arrived after us and several who clearly knew the hostess. Our requests for consideration were met with shrugs and indifference! Loved the homey style of this place. Food was simple & delish. My only issue was the waiter. He was an older greek waiter who didnt seem to understand our questions and would keep repeating the same answer with "lady you want it or not"? Its probably lost in translation but I was with my parents who felt rushed in ordering without questions answered. The table behind us though had a really sweet waitress who would go through ingredients or which dish she suggested. So if we go back we want her to serve our table or rather sit in area she serves! My favorite spot in the neighborhood. I live in this area for 5 yrs already and am from Serbia, so this is kind of food our grandmothers and mothers cooked for us when we were kids!! I'm sure that for most people the experience will be amazing, but we had a reservation for 5 people booked a week in advance and had to wait at the door for around 50 minutes on a Saturday night. The food, eventually, was very good, and after 40 minutes of waiting they offered us some complimentary house wine to help help ease our tensions. I would give 4 or 5 stars if not for this long wait. We spent the full day touring NYC as tourists and were very hungry and ready to catch up with old friends, but the long wait made dinner a bit awkward as we were all so hungry by the time food was available. Additionally, it seemed as though friends of the restaurant (locals) were getting tables with no wait while we stood there hungry....so this is a warning to the fellow traveler. Food: I recommend the 5 dip appetizer. That alone with some bread would have made me a very happy diner. The Tzatziki (cucumber), Tryokafteri (spicy feta), and Melinntzanosalata (roasted eggplant) were fantastic. The skordalia and taramosalata were ok, but others in my party really enjoyed them. We also got the Sea Bass entree, which was tender and moist and grilled to perfection with plenty of seasoning. One of our party also got the baby shark, which was tasty, and the calamari was served whole instead of in slices, which was very good. Side dishes such as the potatoes did not seem worth the price or effort, especially with such filling entrees.
