I got down-home Greek cookin' in a cozy, hint-of-chintzy setting that would feel comfortable to a Grandma. This is not a problem, but it was a bit of a surprise. I brought a friend who trekked over from Washington Heights to experience ethnic cuisine, Astoria style. I ordered the cabbage leaves stuffed with beef, rice, and herbs in a lemon-egg sauce. She ordered the lamb in the same lemon-egg sauce, which came as a huge massive hunk of meat smothered in gooey spinach. So, so, so much goopy lemon-egg sauce for both of us. We've been here 3 times now and each time, the food has been very good. One time I ordered the roasted chicken it was very dry and disappointing, but everything else has been wonderful. However, the past 2 times we've eaten here...the service has been just awful. On our last trip, the two of us literally sat for 45 minutes between finishing our plates and wanting to pay our bill. It is very gracious that they serve a gratis dessert to everyone, but on this last occasion, this was not served to us. It must have been that they were short servers, because it was at the point of ridiculousness several times. Great Greek food with excellent service in a warm, open setting. Go with a group so you can order several of the appetizers to get a taste of their excellent dishes. The grilled calamari with a sprinkle of lemon is a must. Since they use a real charcoal grill in the open air kitchen, it gives the food an excellent taste. The two traditional dishes of Pastitsio (pasta, beef & bechamel sauce) and Mousaka (eggplant, potatoes, beef and b sauce) are made perfectly. I came here twice, once for lunch and another time for take out: 1. LUNCH I ordered TARAMOSALATA (fluffy caviar and potato spread) which was amazing and one of my favorite Greek appetizers to order. In addition, I ordered BAKALIARAKIA (pan fried whitings), but I was not too impressed with that and decided I do not like pan fried whitings in general; not because it wasn't cooked well but just my personal preference. The service was really good and this is what impressed me the most! I will definitely come back because my waiter was great and I always love my TARAMOSALATA! 2. TAKE OUT I ordered the KOTOPOULO STITHOS which is a grilled marinated boneless breast of chicken with rice and bread, to go. It was ok. The chicken was juicy and tender but slightly too chewy because it was grilled too much, but overall I liked it. We had a very good dinner at Bahari. We started with the beet salad and a medium salad. Both were excellent - the beets were served with some tasty steamed chard, which was a nice combination. For entrees, we had the calamari with green beans and the stuffed cabbage with lemon potatoes. Both were excellent. The house wine was quite good, and the little complimentary dessert was tasty. Service was friendly and efficient. You are unlikely to have a leisurely meal at Bahari - they get you in and out pretty quickly. My bf and I came to this place thinking it was the previous one. We didnt realized they change management and name. We decided to stay and were skeptical at first but then realized the food is the most authentic home greek style! Food! I drive from Brooklyn to Astoria for this specific place. The owner greets you with a huge smile as you walk in and instantly makes you feel at home. The staff is friendly but they are not experts. It's a simple place with simple Greek dishes. Service might be a tad slow on weekends but it's well worth it. I've been to this restaurant at least 100 times because the food is consistently fresh and very tasty. I recommend a dinner for two to start: Greek salad and an order of grilled Octopus or Calamari( the grilled calamari is incredible!) Whole striped bass with a side order of gigantes(various sides to choose, I like gigantes). Then as always you get complimentary dessert. Other than the fact that they miss-spelled cuisine, I have only good things to say about this place-AND maybe they purposefully misspelled the word to attract more attention from yelpers like me! This is really a wonderful place to eat lemon potatoes, baked artichoke, spinach rice or my FAVORITE cheesy stuffed eggplant! The portions are the perfect size (for me and I eat a lot). Perhaps for an average person they give you enough food for 1.5 meals.. I have only taken food out of this place, so I can't attest to how good the dining experience is, but the waiters always say hello and thank you to me and generally seem very polite. Some work friends introduced me to this place one night, and I've since been back with others - I'm sad to have lived in Astoria all these years and just now am acquainted with Bahari Estiatorio. Everything is so fresh, and you can seriously taste every herb, the quality of the olive oil, etc. in every bite. Best Greek salad probably ever, in the history of all Greek salads, and I crave their lima beans. Who craves lima beans?! My family planned to go here for my birthday dinner last night. They looked up the menu, looked at Yelp reviews, etc. Everything came back sounding great. We walked into this place around 7 PM, and the decor was lovely! The place was pretty large, and the food on everyone's plates looked amazing. I hadn't eaten all say, so I was practically drooling at the menu. They had so many things! And a lot of vegetarian options, for my veggie friends. We started off with red wine. They came out with bread, but we replaced it with pita because my sister asked. That was nice. I didn't like the red wine, it tasted watered down. I don't eat red meat, but since it was my birthday, I decided to order lamb! The order said leg of lamb with lemon potatoes. I also ordered a big salad and a large chunk of feta cheese. The lamb came out and it was drowning in a sauce that the menu didn't mention that it came with. Luckily, the sauce was good, so I ate it. The lamb was soft and tasty. The lemon potatoes, however, were only 3 tiny potatoes! And they were a bit burnt. And not very lemon-y. Being a HUGE potato fan, I ordered a side of lemon potatoes (I think it was 5 bucks), expecting a big portion, and it was another 3! I was in shock. TINY portion! The salad was okay, but how can you mess up a salad? My sister ordered a spinach pie, and she didn't like it, and neither did I. The phyllo tasted weird, and it tasted more like a burnt cake with no cheese and just very little mushy spinach. She also ordered fried zucchini and wasn't crazy about that. I'm not saying this place was bad, I just wasn't impressed. The reviews and ambience gave me extremely high expectations for this place, and I was let down. But my belly was full, and the meal was free (my family paid, it was my birthday), so I was happy enough! They also give you free dessert. Current update March 2011 Well, it is now official. I have to give this place a 5 star in the great neighborhood joint category. Recently brought some friends here, one couple visiting from Greece. Their response was "it is like eating in the islands at home." Everyone loved the vibe in the backroom. Just gotta say "GO" ------------------------- What a terrific joint! We were reeled in as we passed by and saw the cook filleting a fish from the window in front. The room is very pleasant-- white painted brick juxtaposed with woods and white tablecloths. Simple and classic. We ordered an ENORMOUS amount of food-- 1 beer, 1/2 carafe of house wine (next time, it will be from the wine list), a soda, 2 appetizers, 1 salad, 3 entrees, 3 vegetables. Everything was delicious. We were so sated we left food on the plate, only to be comped a delicious dessert, which begged for a final cup of coffee. The bill was $90--- truly a bargain. Though I am still mourning the demise of S'Agapo, I will be going back to Bahari as a regular. read more

Super friendly staff especially the waitress with the short mullet- ish hair. She is hilarious!! I love this place, I came here with 10 of my coworkers and we all tried about 15 dishes. When I tell you that every single dish was amazing, please believe me!! The food came in one after the other, and we were all so full in the end, we loosened our belts. I've returned twice more with friends and the dishes have stayed consistently delicious. The pastitsio dish was HUGE and succulent, my friend's spanakopita was moist yet crunchy. We were there saturday april 18th. We had a reservation for 4 pp @ 7pm. We spoke first to a young lady, then an older lady came over either way... We had the paperwork we didn't have the vest because the dog gets irritated but my friend called in advance and the person on the phone said it was okay. There's no reason for us to lie if they would've said no my friend would've made other arrangements for the dog or we would've gone to another restaurant. We wound up going to Ellias corner & omonia who had no problem taking care of us with the dog. We would've loved to eat at your restaurant the menu looks spectacular and I'm sure the food is just as delicious. My mother and father both were in the restaurant business and owned a very successful Greek restaurant & nightclub in Manhattan.I am in the restaurant business also and my managers had a meeting with our staff state stating that we could not confront a customer with a service dog otherwise the restaurant could be fined because we would be breaking the law. I didn't make this up free to Google service dogs. I'm really sorry that we had that experience and I hope someday we could come to your restaurant, but I think the ladies were dictated by the opinions of customers who are unaware or ignorant of the laws of service dogs. Let me preface the below review with this, I've had AMAZING Greek food before and have always looked for another place to live up to my expectations in NYC. I'm still looking. The reason for the two stars is simple, the service is mediocre, the Greek salad (a staple in Greek food, in my opinion) was flavorless with absolutely no marinate and the dessert served on the house was questionable in its expiration date. So what did I like, the grilled octopus was cooked to tender perfection, the lemon potatoes were on point and the Greek dipping sauce platter was good, although, my boyfriend found the spicy feta spread to watery. My pork souvlaki was a big portion for the price and grilled really well. If not for the waitress who seemed confused and disconnected from what she was doing the whole time, (she served the dip platter and only asked 20 minutes later if we figured out what they were..gee thanks!), my review would be 3 stars. None the less, we just moved to Astoria so we'll continue to search for the perfect Greek spot. read more

We've been to this restaurant several times and it never fails to impress. As many have stated, the grilled octopus is amazing. I've had their grilled branzino and the grilled barbounia (red mullet aka seppia) and they are always delicious. The vegetables, the "dips", and the wine selection is also excellent. I asked for pita instead of the lackluster bread and it was infinitely better..... especially with the dips. Of the two complementary desserts I like the Baklava much more than the other semolina-type "cake." All in all you're in for a delicious meal if you come here. Highly recommended. read more

Beware of the grumpy server! A friend of mine recommended this place to me, so I decided to take my aunt here for lunch on her birthday. From the beginning things didn't go well, I guess my friend had a better experience because he is actually Greek. Service was horrible! Our waiter was unbelievably rude, not sure if he was having a bad day or he just shouldn't be in the service industry, but he made our lunch very unpleasant. As I was ordering our appetizers and mains he kept correcting me for miss pronouncing the names, sorry not sorry I am not Greek, not only that offended me but also when I asked what options we had as sides he didn't even bother to explain what they were, he just said the names in Greek. I ended up ordering French fries for all of us and he said that's it? Potatoes? Ok (walked away) The busser ignored us for the longest until my boyfriend stood up and ask him for water, our glasses were empty since we finish the appetizers. Food was decent, Greek salad was a little bit of a disappointment specially for an authentic place like this, very dry and flavorless.
