We've been to this restaurant several times and it never fails to impress. As many have stated, the grilled octopus is amazing. I've had their grilled branzino and the grilled barbounia (red mullet aka seppia) and they are always delicious. The vegetables, the "dips", and the wine selection is also excellent. I asked for pita instead of the lackluster bread and it was infinitely better..... especially with the dips. Of the two complementary desserts I like the Baklava much more than the other semolina-type "cake." All in all you're in for a delicious meal if you come here. Highly recommended. read more

Delicious food and wonderful service. I've been here for a late lunch/early dinner when there aren't as many tables and service is always spot on. The Greek salad is always a good starter. Large portion, just big enough to share. I love grilled seafood, so we got the grill shrimp and grilled calamari before. With a side of lemon potatoes and rice, it's the perfect amount to share with another person. The artichokes and peas vegetable side is different, but tasty. Location is convenient being right near the Broadway stop on the N/Q in Astoria. The meal ends with two small pieces of dessert. Love the custard one, not sure what the other dessert is. Came here to celebrate our friends' daughters' baptism. We had the entire back room to ourselves and it was wonderful. Food was really delicious. Service was excellent. Since everything was pre-arranged, I had no idea what the dishes were called. We had a salad with cheese, fried eggplant and zucchini, pork something or tilapia, and dessert. My favorite course was the dessert. It wasn't overly sweet. I'm not to sure how to describe it but one of the desserts was sort of a egg custard type cake and it was really good. My main issue was with the fried eggplant and zucchini, the slices of the vegetables weren't thick enough so all you tasted was fried batter and oil. It was not very good at all. However, the salad, main courses, and dessert were excellent. I would definitely recommend this place and I would come here again. The waiters and waitresses were very attentive to all our needs and there was definitely an endless supply of liquor =P The decor was very bright and elegant. Tried this place with friends in town and the consensus was YUMMO!!! We started off with a refreshing watermelon feta salad. The Melintzanosalata (roasted Eggplant spread) was garlicky smoky and went great with the baked pita. Totally addictive! The saganaki (fried haloumi) was the best I've had so far. Grilled octo was tender and tasty. They definitely do it well here. Our whole grilled snapper was on point. The lamb chops were medium rare and grilled to perfection. Moussaka was OK, although the bachemel was a bit pasty (too much flour?), and the stuffed tomato/pepper was very obviously reheated after sitting around all day. Meh. Cute decor. First, let me say, that everyone that has reviewed this place is right - the charcoal grilled octopus is ridonkulously good. Okay, that might over hype your expectations but seriously though, its really good. The dip/spread tray is definitely worth a look (combine with fresh pita order and you won't be disappointed). Note, stay away from the baby shark app. Honestly, I don't know why I haven't learned this lesson yet but shark does not taste good, no matter what you do to it. The meat is too lean and the fish itself lacks flavor. Therefore, you always have to try to cook flavor into it through the use of the broth and more times than not, it doesn't work. Cool concept though. As shareable entrees, we ordered the grilled black sea bass and the lamb chops. Black sea bass - be warned, this fish costs about 50 dollars but its 2 lbs. The fish had an ambulance of flavor and grilling it definitely crisped the skin - I would eat just the skin if I could...ala fried chicken. Also, like Yao Ming said - "eat the head" - most people don't realize that the meat in the cheeks of the fish is the most tender and flavorful meat on the fish. It's two small pieces but so good. Ask any real chef. Lamb chop - whoa mama. Not gamey at all. Cooked to a perfect medium rare. The meat was so juicy and tender. Don't be after to gnaw on the bone because that's where the best flavors are - the meat that's stuck to the bone. Finished off with the complementary dessert and some greek coffee - there is a very layer of ground coffee beans or something or other on the behind of the coffee - any idea what that is? The coffee was good though...til the muddy undrinkable bottom. read more

What an authentic Greek dining experience! Don't let the facade deter you - it looks like a Pita sandwich-type shop with the cooking up front in the window but the dining room is beautifully spartan (white with exposed brick and ship's rope accents) and the waitstaff are well dressed in white/black. Staff were friendly. We took two friends there who were not very familiar with real Greek food and they impressed. I wish we had more people so we could order even more dishes to try! We started with an appetizer selection that I thought would be a good representation of the Greek standards: Grilled Squid and Octopus (my favorite!), mixed plate of hummus, tzatziki, potato puree and goat cheese puree and fried squid in case the other stuff didn't go over well. It was accompanied by lettuce salad (crisp and cold) and grilled bread (not pita - $1.00 extra.) It was all a hit! They still preferred the fried squid but liked the grilled items and the mushy stuff (!). The entrees ordered were grilled whole red snapper (de-boned and amazing), lamb and fried squid (again!!) with the Greek standard, yellow potatoes and rice with veggies. All dishes were terrific. Lamb presentation was at first a little disappointing (smaller plate with Lamb slices and gravy) but it was awesome and filling. I guess we are used to such huge portions...Lemon potatoes were nicely browned from the broiler and were perfect. No room or time for dessert or coffee but the desserts looked great and the coffee smelled heavenly. This place was alright for fairly priced Greek food. I came with a group of 8 and we ordered a selection of mezze to share, without getting any main dishes. Overall, the food was good but not at all amazing. We had two bottles of red and they were both pretty good. The one I particularly liked goes by a Greek name I could never remember in a thousand years, but it's listed on the menu as having notes of cherry and spices-- definitely a must-try and at such a great price (22 for the bottle) you'd be remiss to skip it. Now, as for the food, we did not get any main dishes, and so I cannot comment on what seemed to be a decent selection, but the appetizers etc were just okay. The biggest let-down was the spanakopita-- it did not taste fresh at all. However, the most amazing thing was a fried Greek cheese that they have, which was a gooey, tangy, creamy delight. We also ordered two plates of the assorted Greek dips, which were all interesting, and paired amazingly with the fresh, hot pocketless pita that they put on the table. The service definitely a bit off, as our waitress was not very friendly and kept trying to rush us into ordering, and the busboys cleared things that weren't fully empty. They were busy but not at all packed, so they really have no excuse for this behavior, in my opinion. Overall, considering we paid only 20 dollars each (with wine, too, don't forget!) Beware of the grumpy server! A friend of mine recommended this place to me, so I decided to take my aunt here for lunch on her birthday. From the beginning things didn't go well, I guess my friend had a better experience because he is actually Greek. Service was horrible! Our waiter was unbelievably rude, not sure if he was having a bad day or he just shouldn't be in the service industry, but he made our lunch very unpleasant. As I was ordering our appetizers and mains he kept correcting me for miss pronouncing the names, sorry not sorry I am not Greek, not only that offended me but also when I asked what options we had as sides he didn't even bother to explain what they were, he just said the names in Greek. I ended up ordering French fries for all of us and he said that's it? Potatoes? Ok (walked away) The busser ignored us for the longest until my boyfriend stood up and ask him for water, our glasses were empty since we finish the appetizers. Food was decent, Greek salad was a little bit of a disappointment specially for an authentic place like this, very dry and flavorless. Stuffed eggplant was delicious, meatballs were very tasty but a little dry, and the fried cod was great. Prices are ok, nothing crazy. But I Won't be coming back here! Ever! read more

Nice Greek restaurant which serves really great food, extensive menu, and their prices are reasonable in the mid-range of the $$. The food is a definite 5 stars. Always fresh, well prepared, and delicious. Our favorites are the grilled octopus appetizer, Tzatziki, fresh fish, and the Greek salad w/feta cheese. They serve Greek salad without any dressing but just add salt, pepper, olive oil, and red vinegar .. it will be so fresh and heavenly. The only thing that I've ever eaten here that is not 5 stars is the lemon potatoes. I find them a bit dry and lacking in flavor. The ambience is nice. Spacious interior, clean, and comfortable. Hostesses, the servers that bring water, food, and take away plates, and all of the waiters with the exception of one have been welcoming, friendly, and helpful .. 5 star service. This last time we came here early this year, we had a waiter who is not up to the high standards of the rest of the staff. We had him before at least one other time. He was impatient in taking our orders even though the place was nearly empty, did not recommend any dishes when my friend asked what would you recommend for appetizers, a bit curt, and was not friendly. Unfortunately, since his level of service is about 2 stars .. I am rating this place 4 stars instead of 5 .. just in case you get him. This is not the type of service that one should expect at a restaurant of this level. With other great Greek restaurants to chose from in Astoria .. I really wanted to like this place. I had heard such great things. Unfortunately, I didn't have an especially good experience. I started with the soup of the day, which was a bean soup. And it was pretty good. Unfortunately, it was all down hill after the soup. I ordered the baked lima beans and an eggplant, tomato, pepper, onion and potato dish. All of the vegetables were terrible. They were dripping in oil, and eating them, I started to feel kind of sick to my stomach. I stopped eating the vegetables and had some bread to try and calm my stomach. That helped a bit, although the bread they bring to the table is dry and cold and not particularly noteworthy. I think perhaps I just ordered poorly. Other reviews rave about the fish and meat dishes, which I did not try. I should also note that we had very good service. And the restaurant is clean and well lit and very relaxing. You will not be rushed at Bahari, which is nice. read more

Used to be called Stamatis and was recommended to me by a buddy from Greece many years ago as the best Greek restaurant in NYC. I've never been to Greece but it was really good. Delicious giant Spanakopita and great GIGANTES (Baked lima beans with onions, tomato, pepper, and fresh parsley). Not only that but they gave us a small desert dish on the house. That's some solid customer service. There are many options for Greek food in Astoria but this should be your first stop if you are in the hood. read more

Nothing was bad, but nothing was life-changing or so amazing I'm dying to go back. We had the salad that was "Chopped Romaine with Dill, Feta, Olives etc" and I didn't care for it. Not tossed, very dry and I expected it all to be chopped. The dip platter was one of my favorite things. I really liked the Spicy Feta Dip! The Octopus was good but honestly I had heard such raves it's possible my expectations were too high. The Pasticio (sp?) was just Ok, the Gigante beans my husband really liked, and the lemon potatoes were good albiet a very small portion. This was my second the dining experince here. The food is delicious but beware: They do not honor reservations they've agreed to. Came here on a Saturday night with an 8pm reservation party of 9. We were seated around 9.10, by which point they'd run out of a few dishes we wanted to order. Mega disappointment. I ordered the Black Sea Bass and it was the best fish that I have ever eaten. The service was fantastic! I've always wanted to go to the best Greek place in Astoria. After years of trying, it actually happened today. The service was excellent, the atmosphere was charming and the food, well, the food. We started with a particularly fresh and good tzatziki and then baked sheep cheese with plenty of lemon to squeeze on top. Both were home runs. I love my peeps, I really do, and i love Greek food. But I seriously think that Greek restaurants are over-charging with out apparent reason besides maybe their rent. Bahari makes, maybe my favorite "magireuta" classic dishes, after mine, but cmon with the over pricing...we went with a friend after the Greek parade, I understand, it was super busy and I took the half hour wait because i was craving Greek food. My friend ordered the grilled octopus and it was a minuscule portion. When we saw that they charged $17 for that, my friend exclaimed to the waitress, "i was expecting more tentacles for that price "...Of course in vain. Recommended by the proprietor of a neighboring Greek dry cleaning establishment as the only place that he and his family would go to for a meal in the neighborhood, it has become my favorite. Most outstanding is its grilled fish (of course) and peas artichoke vegetable with large helping of fresh bread. I haven't tried much else but my company, on many occasions, have tried the other parts of the menu and liked it. Lots of Greek places out in Astoria but most are mediocre at best. Bahari sets itself apart from the competition. This place came highly recommended from a local who knows the area well. We were not disappointed. Even though they have no windows the back room is White Brick with lots of light. They have ropes hanging from the ceilings in the front room which gives it a nautical theme. It's not a fancy place but the star of the show is the fresh food especially the fish. Table are well spced out and it's clean. We started with Krya Pikilia-Spreads which include (Taramosalata, Tzatziki, Skordalia, Melintzanosalata and Tyrokafteri. Ask then for the Pita which is hot and goes better with it than the French bread they give you. All were packed with flavor and freshness. Clearly they we're homemade recipes and well executed. They give you a little of each and it's good for 4. We also ordered the Saganaki which is a Pan-seared Kefalograviera cheese that was perfectly cooked and not greasy at all. We ordered the Dorado as a main with Lemon potatoes as the complimentary side. Keftedes which are Pan-fried beef meatballs sounded good and we were told they we're the best around. The fish was a little overcooked but very tasty. Like most Greek places they will remove the bones for you if you ask and it's prepared by being grilled in the oven and some Extra Virgin Olive Oil. The meatballs did not disappoint. Large, busting with flavor and fluffy. Once again this was clearly some Grandma's recipe brought over from the old country Personally I'd like a little more salt in them but you should definitely get them. Service is efficient and friendly. We were greeted and seated immediately on a Friday night at 8:30. They place was about half full and it had a mixed crowd of locals and people who had came here as a destination spot. It's right next to the train but you don't hear it inside the restaurant. Took about 10 minutes to get there from midtown. All in all if you want great fresh food, in the mood for some Greek and don't want to spend $50 a head this is a place you will be coming back to.
