I stopped by on a Thursday shortly after 7pm. There were three tables with diners, including one table of six people. All three tables had left within 15 minutes. It was a quiet meal. My server was prompt and friendly. I ordered chicken pad Thai medium spiced. Food came out hot within minutes and was well-portioned and presented. My dish was tangy more than spicy. Next time I will order my Thai food spicy. I would have given this dining experience five stars, but there was a long, gaping crack in the wall by my booth that bothered me. My favorite Thai restaurant in Tucson! The place is hidden away in a little area on Speedway & Swan. The food never misses. I love getting their Pad Thai and Green Curry. Their gai satay and tom yum koong is also extremely flavorful and delicious as well, but the pad thai is my go-to and my comfort food. I personally like calling ahead and ordering take out! Their pad thai tastes good with tofu but also with shrimp and beef as well! If you want a little spice you can ask for it spicy and they will cater to your liking. Delicious Thai food find in Tucson. The Panang curry and the Thai Toast were my favorite ( alert- the cucumber peanut sauce it comes with has a generous splash of fish sauce). The Panang curry had the right blend of each spice and I could have enjoyed as a stand alone soup as that broth is spot on! Ok. Firstly. I read on reddit and other forums how much I HAD to go here for THE most authentic delicious Thai in town. Cool. I eat a lot of lunches solo, so I am used to seating alone or at the bar area if a place has that option. I come here on a weds. around 1:20pm. He points at middle table and says, "No! Only these." So I decide eh.....I'll come back on a different day. OK, so yesterday, 9/29 I head in around 11:30. No one is there, I am seated in a booth, all is good in the world. Order the drunken noodles, I was not aware they are not part of the lunch special, though it seemed as if they are listed at the bottom of the lunch specials. Ok....again, no big deal. Here's the reason for the stars off. 1 off bc he was so rude the first time, and was very unpleasant this time when I asked for some siracha sauce. ( I am aware there is a shortage, so i said, or some sort of chili dipping sauce ) He looks at me and goes, "no." proceeds to bring me chili pepper flakes. The meal itself was sub par Not very "juicy" for lack of a better word. A few green pepper, the tofu was good. I just don't see myself going back. Rounding up from a 3.5 to a 4 because of how cool the soup cooking in front of us was (fire spouting out from the center or "fire soup" as a friend dubbed it). Not as great was the duck dish which had a weird taste to it (like they had marinated it in the char siu sauce, but not quite there). The fried rice was okay but nothing amazing. They no longer cook it with eggs or carrots or any tofu. The only flavor you can get out of it is spicy if you ordered spicy. They used to use Thai chilies to turn up the spice heat. Now they just use some bland spice sauce. It has heat, but not much flavor. They don't give you much meat either. If you ask for extra meat, they'll charge you for it with barely extra meat. Pad Prik King 1/5 Again, used to be flavorful and now bland. The roast duck was wonderful. They ask how spicy you wan it. We wanted it very spicy. It was not. However there was a deep rich flavor! Also had Pad Thai rice noodles stir fried with eggs, been spouts and green onions and topped with peanut with chicken added. How wonderful. Nice light flavor. Updating my review now that I'm expanding my spicy palate and eating indoors a bit more frequently to say: it's even better than in my last review! I typically feel very uncomfortable inside of most restaurants these days, but I always feel very welcome with Bai Thong's kind, competent staff. Everything that I order here is always more than worth it, and exploring their menu more has been such a treat for me lately! The interior is calm and welcoming, and you can really tell that the entire staff puts their whole heart into what they do; from the courteous honesty of the servers, to the way that the food here nourishes my soul as well as my body. It's hard to say what my favorite dish is, because everything is so good. Lately, I've been going for lunches with how good and nourishing the "soup of the day" always is; it comes with any of the lunch special entrees, along with their egg roll. Which, I really must disagree with other reviewers, has always been really excellent for all six years I've been going here. I really like ordering their curries with shrimp, lately; I don't usually eat seafood in the desert, after growing up on the gulf coast, but theirs is really fantastic, and makes me a little less homesick for the ocean. I was raised by huge foodies, honestly, who traveled me to a lot of places as a child to eat -- so, my body still remembers what it's like to be trained into having the palate of a food snob -- and Bai Thong still remains today to be one of my favorite restaurants of all time. I can really feel here that they understand the importance of love in food, and eating here helps me to expand that understanding inside of my own body and soul. On the whole these days, I feel a sort of sad suffering from a detached sense of humanity, but not here. Everything I eat at Bai Thong I can always tell really comes from the heart, and the servers are always happy that I'm there. Respect is met with respect here, and it's a relief to have a place where I feel comfortable to be myself, and welcomed for it. My boyfriend wanted to walk out after those, but I encouraged him to stay. Which, was not a good idea. The waitress was very sweet, we really liked her. It was a clean restaurant. Fairly busy when we went. The restaurant does a good job of socially distancing customers which makes for a quiet and more personal dining experience. The staff was extremely friendly and were quick to check in to see if you needed anything, extremely pleased with the table service we received. We ordered the Green Curry and the Pad Zee Eew. Both came promptly. The Green Curry was my favorite, with lots of bamboo shoots and green peppers. The Pas Zee Eew noodles were tasty as well. The only criticism for both of the dishes was that the flavor wasn't near as strong for both so I ended up combing the dishes together to try to add some of the curry spice to the Pas Zee Eew. A peanut sauce would have been better, or even Thai sweet chili sauce. Pad Thai: flavorless Pad see ew: flavorless Penang curry (med. spicy): a spicy red curry --at least this one had flavor, though it was a red curry and not a Penang curry (many American Thai restaurants make this error). OMG. So good! This is the first thai place we've tried in town but now I don't know if I can bring myself to try any others. First, COVID protocols are on point. The guy at the register sanitized everything between to-go customers -- the counter, the card holder, the pen, and of course his own hands. Their card reader is compatible with tap cards and Apple Pay, minimizing contact there as well. It looked like they were set up for dine-in, but no one was sat when I was there so I don't know for sure. Best to call and ask! Second, they are super friendly and just make you feel good about supporting their small business. I could tell from my short time in the restaurant that the owner chats with his regulars and gets to know them. Not to mention he was basically a one man show, taking phone orders, packing them up, and ringing up customers. Gotta appreciate the small biz hustle. Third and most importantly, the food! Ugh it's so good. We had tofu pad kee mao and chicken pad thai. Both were phenomenal! The pad kee mao came with tons of veggies which I loved. The noodles were nice and soft, but not too greasy. As mentioned above the service likely gets a 4 or maybe as I type more a 4.5. The food though...just a no all around. One dish had pineapple, cashew, rice, chicken and shrimp and it was the sole positive but even then we wouldn't order it again. The pad thai didn't have much flavor at all. For the other dish, the chicken and noodles in it just existed. They had no flavor to consider. No real seasoning. We eneded up with half a dish of noodles and green onion as part of the mistake that was the same. Our food just existed. So...here's the thing. The food isn't bad...but it isn't good. It truly is something that is sat before you and just manages to exist on the table. We hope that the same caliber of food peers and other reviewers noted in the past can return. We will check reviews again and if we see an update maybe we will try but for now it's a pass. If y'all do try, we hope your staff experience is as good as our service was. We've eaten there a couple of times now during the weeknights. This restaurant is vegan-friendly which helped a lot. So far we've tried there Pad Zee Eew, Pad Thai, Panang Vegetable, and veggie fried rice. We skip the egg and ask for no fish sauce, they accommodate. Egg rolls are a nice treat also. No complaints, food is fresh, very tasteful, and you can kick up the heat with there extra spices and jalapenos.
