I've heard good things about Chinese Combo from friends for years, and while I was driving by recently, I decided to finally stop and grab dinner to take home. I ordered the cashew chicken dinner special with hot and sour soup and an egg roll. I skipped the fried rice because the $2 upcharge felt a little steep, and I also picked up an order of orange chicken for the boys. They told me it would be about 15 minutes, which was spot on. I really appreciated that everything was packed securely in boxes--no spills at all on the drive home. When I opened everything up, I was impressed with how fresh it looked. The vegetables in the cashew chicken were crisp and brightly colored, and the dish tasted just as good as it looked. The boys said the orange chicken was some of the best they've had--not overly breaded and very fresh-tasting. At first, I thought the prices were a bit high for Chinese food, but after seeing (and tasting) the quality, I get it and will definitely be back. On my recent trip to Tucson we stopped in here for take out. It was lunch time, we ordered off the Thai lunch menu. Service was friendly, food came out fast. I got the green curry with chicken, it came with white rice and a tiny egg roll, the curry was mild (I wasn't asked about heat level) & the wonton soup ($2 up charge) .. the food was bland. We ordered chicken pad Thai and my friend enjoyed that dish with the hot & sour soup. We also ordered the seafood combo, it had good flavor but the serving size was small. My husband and I have been getting takeout here for over a decade and we remain big fans. The name of the restaurant is a little confusing as I think the whole name is Chinese Combo Thai Cuisine. And as you can imagine they serve both Chinese and Thai food. Takeout is always fast. The interior is nice--a lot nicer than the outside suggests, but in all these years we haven't dined in. But it's a nice environment if you choose to do so! My husband and I almost always get the same thing: yellow curry chicken and Thai iced tea. Absolutely delicious! And huge! It always lasts me two meals. They also do a great job of packing it up so that it stays very hot. We will continue to eat here and you should check it out too! read more

If you don't even remotely know how to make a dish then either learn or don't make it at all. We went to the owner to return it saying they gave us the wrong order. She told me this was Pas See Ew. I said you must be mistaken and she said that's their version for the last 20yrs. Sorry, but this is some other concoction that was like a salty brothy noodle. First, they have all the proper ingredients available right next door at Lee Lee so why are they not using them. American broccoli is wrong, carrots are not part of the dish nor is a lime. They overcharged me by $10 and wouldn't give the money back. I had the receipt and everything. Very strange that they would want to lose a customer over that. But I tried several times to get a refund / credit and they played silly games so bye-bye. ( take a look at your receipt because they don't itemize and easy for them to overcharge.) read more

I have passed this Chinese restaurant 100's of times over the last several years and never really paid attention to it. The name just seems to throw things off as it appears as just a hole in the wall establishment. It was my son's idea to stop here for lunch.I did not have high expectations and was a little nervous to eat here as I have not had good experiences with holes in the wall restaurants. Upon entering I was immediately shocked. It was like I had gone through a portal and sent directly to china. This business is amazingly spotless, beautiful color combinations and delicately decorated. We were greeted and seated by an adorable Asian lady who seemed very happy to be there. She took our drink order and promptly returned with our drinks. There was one option for the menu, it was a lunch menu. For $10.99 you get your choice of soup, egg flour or hot and sour, an entree, many to select from, white rice (fried rice option available) and an egg roll. I opted for the moo goo gai pan with fried rice and egg flour soup. My son chose the tai chicken and white rice with egg flour soup. The food was delivered to our table faster than anywhere I have eaten. The first thing I noticed was that this restaurant does not use canned vegetables I was shocked with fresh mushrooms in my dish. The fried rice was hot and savory and actually had eggs in it. Most places leave the eggs out. The egg roll was pretty small, 2 bites and it was gone and it was more of a spring roll than an egg roll. The main course of moo goo gai pan was loaded with chicken, seasoned well and piping hot from the wok. Over all my food was delicious. I sampled my son's tai chicken, O have never had a tai dish before and I was stunned, amazing flavor and again fresh bell pepper. All in all I never felt that I was in a whole in the wall establishment, amazing service, amazing hot savory food and for a very reasonable price. I have three favorite Asian restaurants in this town and I think "Chinese Combo" has taken my #1 spot. I just wish I had not waited so long to stop here. A+ read more

Our first choice was a nearby store but they were "credit card only" (we only had cash) so that's how that happened. However once inside and seated we saw that it was the RIGHT choice! The menu was varied and the prices were reasonable. The servers were not only friendly but approachable, the dining area clean with a good vibe plus the bathroom was clean. Mostly, the food came to us pretty quickly. My kids enjoyed the Thai Tea (I enjoyed the "taxes!" sip as well) as well as the Green Curry plate. My Sweet and Sour plate was delightful and I received a nice supply of the "red sauce" for not only the chicken but the rice too. The Egg Rolls were crisp and not soggy too. With a shared big parking lot with the rest of the strip mall I could see how this would be a place to come for your eating pleasure whether it's for a business meeting or as a place to eat. read more

The interior is much nicer than the storefront would suggest. Good news: nice menu, reasonable prices, good portion size. Bad news: the worst chinese food I've had in a while. Hot and sour soup had no pork. My seafood combo had lots of seafood, but the sauce was horrible. My wife had the pad thai and couldn't finish it - the sauce was terrible. Be aware of the exterior; the inside is nicely decorated and clean. Lina, the waitress, is friendly, polite, and quite helpful. Ordered for the first time. Had great reviews. I will say, fantastic Hot and Sour soup. The egg rolls were supposed to be chicken (nope, pork - which I'm allergic to and hubby is now sensitive to as a result. We don't eat it. Ever.), wonton chips and crab puffs had a flavor I couldn't quite catch. I *think* bad peanut oil. My chicken was undercooked, and I could tell flour had been thrown in and not cooked out. NO sauce. I was very disappointed in the food and service. my parents enjoyed the Chinese food but do NOT order the Thai food and be sure to be very clear on each dish how you want the spice. make the server repeat it back a couple times because I ordered two dishes, larb and drunken noodle, and said mild spice on BOTH dishes and I said it twice. I received the larb with a very little meat and it was SWEET, and the drunken noodle was way too spicy. I should mention that I didn't try the Chinese menu here, only the Thai and only one time. Seems like they probably specialize in Chinese. It was sadly probably the worst Thai I have ever had. I would have probably still gave it 3 stars but the potatoes in my yellow curry were literally inedible. How do you make a potato inedible I ask myself? Not sure if they were kept in the fridge for a while after cooking or what but they were seriously bad in both texture and flavor. The curry itself was heavy on the coconut and really lacking curry flavor. $15 something dollars and it was the worst curry I have ever tried. Will not go back. I had a craving for Thai tonight, so I looked to see if Chinese Combo was open. I have never gotten Chinese food here, but they have some amazing Thai food. I have been going here since 2011, and it still has excellent food. I ordered two spring rolls wrapped in rice paper. The veggies were crisp and fresh, the tofu, perfect....and I enjoyed every bite. I also ordered yellow curry. (chicken). I swear I could have eaten the whole curry order tonight, but I saved some for lunch tomorrow. The curry was perfect. Complex, yet subtle spice nuances, along with perfectly cooked chicken, potatoes, and several other veggies. The curry here is off the charts. I will be supporting this local business quite often. When I have a cold, I crave soup, not chicken but Chinese hot and sour. Being out doing errands and with nose overflowing, I decided to try this strip mall Thai-Chinese hybrid. The soup was sour and perfect for my immediate purpose. The shrimp in lobster sauce was properly cooked, but more a soup than expected, even served with a spoon. It even contained mushrooms. Still, it was cooked properly if lacking seasoning. The tiny 3-bite egg roll was a gem. Not a special place but one to which I would return. And, for a while my nose isn't running. read more

I've I only eaten here once, I will give it another shot. I got the hot and sour soup and the Mongolian beef. This soup was made differently than any other hot and sour soup I have had but that doesn't mean it was bad, I just wasn't ready for that flavor. I think it was a little too sweet. When you meet in you get your Mongolian beef on top of a bed of crispy white noodles and this did not come with that. It did come with the little fried strips that you dip in sweet-and-sour, but no sweet-and-sour. It came with rice and the rice was good. I'll give this place another try before making my final decision read more

Don't let the outside appearance or the name of this restaurant fool you. This restaurant is a gem! I will comment more about the name later. My sister and I (half Chinese and well traveled,) had the Panang Curry. My mother (full Chinese and well traveled,) had the red curry, and my daughter (quarter Chinese and not so well traveled,) had the string beans. We shared a plate of lo mein. Everything was excellent, including the spring roll and the soups that came with the lunch special. Although we were served lots of food, there were no leftovers. We ate very well indeed! The sesame balls were so good we had to order a second helping even though we were stuffed. Everyone of us was very happy with our meal. One measure of excellent Asian Cuisine is how you feel after you've eaten. In spite of eating copiously​, we all felt good afterwards. We didn't experience any of the heaviness, tiredness or headache often associated with a large meal. This is a sure indication of a high quality meal made with quality ingredients, and done right! Yinan, our Chinese waiter, was friendly, attentive, knowledgeable, and helpful. He also had an excellent command of English, and was able to advise us on our food choices. I'm not used to spotless hole-in-the-wall restaurants, but this place was amazingly clean and well lit (the lighting wasn't obnoxious or garish though.) You could bring your prim Aunt from Omaha here, and not freak her out. Even the ambiance was passably pleasant. The vegan options were plentiful, and I expect they will all be delicious. The price was about $1 or $2 higher than bargain lunch combos might be, but the quality of food and the excellent service makes it easily worth it. The name of this place, "Chinese Combo/Thai Cuisine Restaurant" is highly descriptive, not to mention poetic, lyrical and evocative also. The ingenious name immediately conjures up the image of a lotus garden beside a babbling brook, that is decorated with Chinese lanterns, where you are served delicate foods by petite and gracious Chinese maidens. Seriously, as long as we are going with totally literal restaurant names, they should rename this place to "Totally Delicious Chinese Combo/Thai Cuisine with Excellent Service Restaurant." My only complaint was the lack of beer choices. They only had three or four excellent Asian beers to choose from. I prefer Dos Equis XX beer regardless of the Cuisine I'm enjoying. I can't wait to go back. ..................... Here is an update from a visit 3 weeks later: This time we had a waiter named Wayne. He also earned a gold star for excellent customer service. This time we went for dinner and had an excellent experience very similar to the last visit. We all enjoyed ourselves and the food was excellent. I had promised myself to take photos of the food before going in, but by the time we chose our meals and ordered, I was intoxicated enough by the food in front of me to forget all about taking pictures. Although I had the dinner version of what I ordered last time, I also ordered the lemongrass hot and sour soup with assorted veggies. (No, it's not vegan because it is made with chicken broth, but it was well worth jumping off the wagon for one meal.) The soup's flavor was eye opening and good. I was glad I added it to my repertoire. Since we were there for dinner, the portions were larger than last time. This time everyone had enough left over to take home with them for another meal, (which we all happily did.) I live in Scottsdale, the land of fantastic restaurants. The food served here can compete with any of them. If you live in Tucson and like Chinese or Thai food, you are really missing out if you don't try this place. I've been patronizing Thang kui and Ikkyu in the same shopping center for years and never once thought to check this place out because of its name. Ha! Had no idea it was even here except that I was in a hurry to grab some grub on New Years Day, Ole mexican food was closed, and I was not gonna deal with subway...just had to give them a try. At 2:50, I was given a special menu (in addition to the regular) for their lunch combos. No Gang Garee on there, but Pad Thai sounded good, so I went with that and decided on the hot and sour soup as opposed to the egg drop. Lunch combo comes with soup, rice (but not for pad thai), and eggroll. The hot and sour soup came out immediately and was quite good. If you read my previous reviews, you will see that Im a bit of a HSS connoisseur, and this was up there for me...maybe 3rd best Ive had in the city. The plate came out and I was very excited. The pad thai looked to be of the right consistency and with good sauce application. Chicken was noticeably sparse, but whatevs. I really liked the presentation most of all. The portion was a good size for the price, and the plate had small sections for the crumbled peanuts, crushed chilis, and sweet and sour sauce for the eggroll. The Pad Thai was pretty good. Ive had significantly better, but Ive had FAR FAR worse. It was good in every way I would say with the exception that the flavor did not have much depth. Even after squeezing a lime and adding some peanuts, it just seemed kind of monotone. The one tone, however was quite pleasant. I think Im just spoiled... Anyway, a fully enjoyable experience and at a very good price! More people really need to try this place. I have been looking for a good Thai restaurant since moving to Tucson a year ago and this was recommended. I found the restaurant to be somewhat dated an old furnishings, however, everything was very clean and tidy! The only drawback to why I gave it 4 stars was the A/C was not working and they only had fans going so it was somewhat uncomfortable. I had the lemongrass soup with the coconut milk Thai Tom Kha Jay Soup and it was delicious and a nice presentation to start out with and then I had the Pad Thai with Accompanying Rice with chicken. The portion was very generous, the pieces of chicken were quite large. The flavors were great and the service was excellent. I will definitely go back there as I especially love the soup and try some of the other items. read more
