My husband and I went to Bajau via a recommendation from hotel staff at the Westin Cozumel and per reviews on Yelp. Right as we entered, we loved the dim lighting and romantic ambiance that Bajau had to offer. The staff was kind and welcoming and per their recommendations we ordered the shrimp appetizer, I don't remember the name but it was delicious and fresh. We also had the fish ceviche with plantain chips which was my favorite dish of the trip. Everything on the menu seemed fresh and local (except probably the steaks). Tip: Make a reservation online beforehand or call ahead, the restaurant is not too big and they highly encourage reservations/discourage walk-ins (especially during peak travel season). We can't wait to go back to Cozumel and explore the rest of Bajau's menu. read more

This has become a stop on each of our trips to Cozumel. The service has never been anything less than great. The balam tiradito remains one of my favorite menu items. I tried a new dish for dinner, the seafood pasta, and it was very good and the portion was large. We typically have a cocktail or 2 with dinner and you can't go wrong with any of them. If you're a group of more than 2, I'd recommend a reservation. The restaurant is on the melgar so you can watch the sunset if you time your dinner correctly. read more

Sophisticated atmosphere and attentive waitstaff. One table mate had the Caesar salad, which was prepared table side. She had had it before and raved about it. I chose the fish of the day, which was red snapper, but instead of the spicier preparation, I had it grilled with garlic butter. It was excellent! Vegetables and sides are a La carte. Others had the pork ribs and strip steak, which were fantastic, as well. A hot stone is brought with beef dishes, so that if it needs more cooking, you can do it yourself to your liking. This was the first time I've seen that. Three of us had dessert. I had the churros with strawberries and a kind of clotted cream parfait. It was unique and delicious! New restaurant for us to try. We were a party of 4 with 7:00 p.m. dinner reservations. The restaurant is big, very open, high end decor. Loved the vibe. We were seated by the windows with a view. Our server, Ernesto was excellent. We ordered cocktails while perusing the menu. Take note: this restaurant is on the higher end of costs. We ordered a Lobster Ceviche, Pork Belly, Baked Oysters, Cream of Corn Soup, Rib Eye (high choice) and a Skirt Steak (high choice). All the dishes came out with a wonderful presentation, hot, fresh and tasting great. My only comment I will make was the disappointment of the quality of the Rib Eye, tasting great, grilled to request but the amount of fat (see photo) is inexcusable , at least 1/3 of the steak was fat, and at the cost of the entree, is wrong. Bajau is a great new experience in Cozumel! We have now been here twice, and the food does not disappoint. It's a refreshing change from constant nachos and Mexican food on a trip away. We had Luis and Memo as our servers, and they were great. They were very attentive and met all of our needs, especially when our drinks were empty. The sound level was extremely high between people and music, we could barely hear the waitress. People were having fun, there was a large party near us that seemed to be enjoying themselves. They first give you bread with an array of sauces. The habanero one is a little spicy but sooo flavorful! Then I had the pork belly. This by far is the best pork belly I have ever eaten! Deep fried and served on sweet potato mash, oh goodness! My friend had the stark and fries and she said it was delicious. But wait, it gets better! Dessert I had RED VELVET CHURROS!!! OMG! But Bajau breaks the mold of the party image of Cozumel and elevates it into a truly fine dining class. Our server Memo was impeccable with a service level found in many of the Michelin rated restaurants back home. The food was elevated and presented with great visuals and landing on the table a la minute. Well seasoned throughout without a heavy hand and paired perfectly by intricate drinks created by mixologist Alondra. This place costs 3-4 times as much as other really good restaurants in town yet their food was extremely bland and poor in quality. Avoid the $35 lobster sandwich at all costs. It's frozen tasteless lobster on a stale piece of bread with imitation mayonnaise and fries. The corn soup was watery and topped with cheap imitation bacon bits. The fried empanadas were soggy and filled with a disappointing freezer burnt mush. The entire meal lacked salt or any type of basic seasoning. There is no way in hell their chef knows what he's doing. We had to ask our server twice for the bill and he lazily took his time even though we were one of only two tables in the restaurant. The ambiance is nice and the hostess and server assistant were warm and professional but that doesn't make up for this overpriced tourist trap. Will never return read more
