Review for Fuego Restaurant located in the MAHEKAL beach resort in Playa Del Carmen. 4 of us ate dinner at this beautiful high end Oceanside restaurant on February 21/26. Atmosphere was perfect, along with attentive staff. Starters, and drinks were great.....sadly that's where things went downhill big time. 3 of us ordered the Pescador entrees , (seafood & pasta in a salmon sauce). As soon as we started to chew we knew something was terribly wrong. Then we figured it out, the sauce was LADEN with fish scales!! Nobody could eat them so the waiter apologized and took them off the bill. Now the horrible part, hubby had chicken risotto. Then at 3 am was Violently ill with food poisoning. ( our next day Cozumel excursion had to be cancelled) After 2 phone calls to Fuego and them promising to have manager call me back I've given up and decided to post this review everywhere I can . ( we've since seen negative reviews for food quality online) Our advice: do not eat here! read more

Had a very below average experience first evening at the Mahekal here. Like many other yelpers mentioned, view was amazing, service was lacking, and food was meh. - The scallop Appetizer dish was undercooked, and sauce was overwhelmed with paprika. - Arugula and Tuna fish salads were just okay. Green mix in the tuna fish salad was not organic for sure. Arugula salad was very basic. Just a handful of arugula with some shred provolone and little sprinkle of pine nuts. They don't have the sea bass dish this particular Saturday evening. We then ordered the lobster and shrimp dishes, unfortunately, neither were fresh. Side veggies and everything else were pretty bland except very strong coconut oil taste. Service was unbelievably slow and lacking despite not many customers. The server asked us any food allergies to begin with, but then when I told him I do not want alcoholic beverages as I have alcohol intolerance, he seemed disappointed. No water refill without making multiple request. The hostess appear only attentive to males European patrons and was very impatient with us ladies. She even got annoyed when realize our reservation was made through OpenTable, which the link was from their website directly. Overall, I ended up canceling my other two evening reservations here. Stunning resort, beautiful and serene setting along the beach. The restaurant brings out the centerpiece for the perfect union of aromatic sensory indulgence. Full cocktail and bar. Speciality drinks and great wine list. Found myself a new Chardonnay! Beer and kids cocktail list too! Food menu varies from seafood to steak to veggies to appetizers and salads. Various menu for ally diets. Had an amazing pizza that was just so good and with the freshest ingredients. Food was good. Service was good. The view is great. You are right on the beach! We came here for lunch as we were waiting for our room to be ready. I hear the dinner is amazing. The lunch didn't blow me out of the water. The shrimp was tasty and the flavors were all there. There are so many restaurants in the area with great food so I'd skip this one. read more

Fantastic birthday lunch for my 17 year old and our family of 5 during a day trip to Playa del Carmen. The service was fantastic and the food amazing. The drink menu was so creative and did not disappoint! We had a beautiful view too!! Took notes on the resort and signed up for their mailing list for a future family vacation! Prior to reserving my birthday reservation i heard so many great things about this place. Nonetheless it's very beautiful, but never did I expect such horrible service from the start with the waiter we had. It was my first time here therefore I had questions in reference to their drinks and food suggestions but it just seemed like my group and I were a bother some to our waiter as he had a smart remark to say to anything we asked. It made our dinner very non welcoming and awkward. Considering it's a higher end restaurant I expected more than the poor service we got. I will not be returning. read more

Wahhh. I'm bummed about my experience here! I really wanted to like this place, but it was highly disappointing. If your a staying at Mahekal, stick to Las Olas! The restauraunt itself is beautifully upscale and there is a great view of the ocean depending on where you sit, but the food and service just wasn't up to par. My boyfriend and I stayed at Mahekal for a week and we only ate here once. Personally, when I travel I like to dine at places that serve authentic local food, but this place is very Americanized. I ordered the lamb and my boyfriend got the risotto. Although our meals looked pretty we both felt they tasted off and I actually had food poisoning hours after our dinner. It sucked so so much!! In terms of service, the waiter was nice but a bit overbearing with how he served us. He was at our table a little too frequently. I don't think he intentionally meant to come off like that, but more so lacked server etiquette. It seemed like we were being rushed out too, which is never a good customer experience. I also wanted to modify my lamb with the sauce on the side and requested it be cooked well done and our server basically said no, because "it wouldn't taste right." That being said, if your a picky eater probably not the best place to eat at. In addition, you may encounter some translating problems if you don't speak Spanish. I suppose if your in the mood for American food, this would be where to go. Honestly though, I'd recommend just skipping it altogether. There's a Guy Fieri's not too far away from here (on 5th Ave) that'll satisfy American food cravings. read more

I am extremely disappointed in this restaurant! I specifically asked for vegan options no meat no fish I literally asked the chef for a vegan meal ...no butter no cheese and no cream and absolutely no animal flesh And what's on top a whole bunch of cheese! I am severely lactose intolerant and disappointed in the lack of communication and culinary expertise. My stomach was terrible after just testing and hoping it was vegan cheese! Great new restaurant in Playa Del Carmen. We stayed at Mahekal Beach Resort in both late January and again in late March/first weekend in April; and dined at Fuego both visits. Recommend the steaks; and the Fuego salad (A grilled romaine lettuce dish.) Great views of the ocean during the day (It is open for all three meals - breakfast, lunch and dinner.) read more

Nice location. Nice architecture. The cocktails were solid. Nice view of the water. And the fish empanadas were great. Everything else--the grilled salad, the chimichurri, the "wagyu" steaks all sucked. First the salas was more of a soup--an under seasoned soup. There was also a the total lack of seasoning on the steaks -- as in not a single grain of salt touched these "steaks". And serving a steak where half of it is a giant piece of fat doesn't mean it's wagyu, it's means it's fat. This place is a rip off, skip it. read more

My husband and I happened upon this place on a recent trip to Playa del Carmen wherein hurricane-like wind and rain found us scampering up from a stroll on the beach. The staff, who clearly saw us running up from the beach, met us at the entrance and helped us inside (they had weather blinds drawn to keep the rain from getting inside) and offered us towels to dry off. Once settled in we hunkered down with a view of the ocean, eating delicious food and drinking craft beers from Mexico until the storm passed and we were able to walk back to our hotel. It actually turned out to be a great start to our vacation. Highly recommended! read more

We had a great lunch at this small restaurant inside a resort property in Playa. This is a smaller, open-air restaurant with great views and just steps from the beach. This resort is unique and features individual huts across a private resort property with beachfront access. It was very friendly, and the food AND DRINKS were excellent. Our server spoke good English and really made our experience great. We stayed for a few cocktails after lunch to enjoy the view. MOST restaurant guests here are staying at the hotel and because the restaurant is located in the middle of the resort--it was a bit of a walk. However, for a great indoor/outdoor dining experience that includes ocean views and brings a Caribbean or South Pacific relaxed vibe--we will return here. Excellent specialty drinks and margaritas. After spending time at the nearby and giant Grand Hyatt (great) and the mega-resort Royal, we liked this change of pace. They appear to serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Prices only slightly higher than normal. Smaller groups (2-4) get the best views. read more
