I sadly do not recommend the vegan / GF apple crumble. It was wayyyy too liquidy and gooey inside, too sweet, too strong a cinnamon flavor and not balanced at all. It ate more like something you'd top onto yogurt or ice cream but on its own almost inedibly sweet. Upsetting as this was our only vegan dessert option at thanksgiving. read more

This is a cute bakery in Croton with indoor and outdoor seating. It's a fairly large pace big enough to accommodate groups. They offer s'more and tea parties too which is really cute. Nice to sit outside with a cuppa, though coffee shops have better coffee. It's an occasional convenient stop to caffeinate and take little grandkids who like to play with the oversized Connect Four. The bakery items are $$$. Through the Too Good to Go app, I tried a few cake and muffin items that had the mouth feel of extra high fat content, but flavorful. One item Susan should stop trying to make is Jewish rugelach. Susan doesn't have anything close to an authentic recipe. And they were very overpriced. I had one and it was tasteless. The pastry and texture were wrong. The filling was wrong. Everything about it was unrecognizable. I'm offended that she calls what she's trying to pass off as rugelach, 'rugelach,' during the traditional Jewish holiday when they're popular. But you don't need the holiday to enjoy them any time of the year. For this deliciousness, I wish everyone could have an eastern European nana/grandma who could make perfect rugelach every time. read more

I was in Northern Westchester for my daughter's cheer competition. Checked Yelp for the perfect bakery for the ride home. Sometimes you need a savory treat, cup of tea, and an array of desserts for later. Really glad I found Baked by Susan. Pulled into a good parking lot and walked into a clean and modern shop. Really nice seating area. Gleaming cases filled with delicacies. I was getting a bit of that paralysis of choice, where the fear of missing out on something by selecting something else was kicking into high gear. But then, the nice lady working behind the counter steered me towards a few great choices. I was happy to see that they take tea as seriously as coffee, at some places tea is an afterthought. They serve loose leaf Harney and Sons tea, it was delicious. The empanada is other worldly good. The pastry crust is decadent and the filling was tasty, I loved the black bean and cheddar. Later that evening, I tried the four dessert items. They were stupendous! Raspberry crumb bar featured delicious raspberry jam and great crumb topping. Pumpkin chocolate chip cookie, pumpkin banana donut, and a pumpkin whoopie pie turned my autumn meter up to 11. The people that live nearby are spoiled. Stopped here to get some coffee and a late morning bite before heading to train station to NYC. My son and husband had a yummy croissant delicacy while I tried the gluten free options. So delicious! I don't know why I've never heard about this gem before, but I'm so glad I have! I found out about Baked By Susan while attending the Best of Westchester event for my own job. I took 2 cupcakes home with me with no expectations, only to find out they were absolutely delicious! I was actually mad at myself that I didn't taste them sooner, so I could bring more home lol. I promised myself that if I were in their area, I would stop by to get another dose. Low and behold, I was making my way south from Peekskill and stopped in. Their shop is cute and comfy. In addition, there is plenty of seating inside and outdoor, along with ample parking. I was immediately greeted and served upon walking in. The selections are pretty diverse. Not only do they serve a variety of baked goods like cakes, cupcakes, pastries, pies, and beverages, but they also had empanadas. I did not expect that. I decided upon a lemon drop and red velvet cupcake, along with a beef empanada. Everything was ready within 2 minutes. I also checked in using my Yelp app and received 15%. In regards to my treats, let me first say I ate the cupcakes over 2 days and let them sit at room temperature before eating. The lemon drop has become a favorite at this point. I personally don't like baked goods that have a filling but this won my heart over. Firstly, the cake texture is soft and moist. Not overly moist, but enough that you can enjoy it without choking or needing water. The filling isn't heavy either. It's a light lemon curd. The taste is a nice balance of vanilla and lemon without the overpowering citrus taste. I especially loved the frosting. I'm not sure what its made from (assuming its butter), but it is delicious and balances well with the cake flavor. The red velvet was also delicious. The cake was moist with a slight chocolatey flavor and topped with a cream cheese frosting. Secondly, the empanada. Very tasty. I'm honestly surprised at that. I've tasted empanadas in different countries and this was really good for a local variety. It wasn't so much the filling but really the crust. It was flaky and buttery, so when it mixed with the savory ground beef, it just hit the spot. After a long day of working in the outdoor that day, this alone brought joy to my stomach. If you are interested, they have empanadas in a variety of flavors including ones that include meat, chicken, veggies, and fruit. Finally, staff were so kind and helpful. They served me immediately upon walking in and thanked me for supporting them after my experience at the Best of Westchester. The space itself appeared clean and well-kept. The only drawback I found were the charges based on cash versus card. There seems to be a slight upcharge if you use your card. To keep you well informed, they do list the prices depending on your method of payment, for many items. So at least then, you have a heads up. But in this day and age of cashless payment, I think this should not be a thing. Overall, it was a great experience. I'll be returning and I hope to use Baked by Susan for a special occasion one day. We stumbled on this cute coffee shop after checking out the Croton Gorge park. Cute decor with outdoor seating. Servers are nice & friendly. They have clean bathroom too! Coffee is strong & hot. My Mom, SIL, and best friend went to a Taste of Westchester class via WCC. We had such a great time! Susan was informative and fun! She sent us home with the fresh bread and a recipe. The bread tasted amazing. On our way out, we also purchased a pumpkin spice tres leches cake and omg it was incredible. There are frozen options to take home and bake later. The BEC empanadas are SO good. You just need to brush with egg wash and bake for an hour. But it's worth the wait! Susan loves what she does and you can taste it in her baked goods. read more

I went in again today, as promised when I spoke to Susan after my last review, and tried a small round cheesecake. It's 4" round and 1"high, half cheesecake, half crust. $10.... Which is a lot. The cheesecake was excellent and the crust well made. It's hard to really judge this with so little actual cheesecake to sample on each bite unless I scraped sideways ruining a small portion of the rest of the crust. It was good. $10 good, no. Good enough to go back and get a regular slice from a whole cheesecake, yes. It just left me wanting more..... like unsatisfied. read more

Best gluten free, vegan banana chocolate chip muffin/loaf ever. My family (who is very pro gluten) is also hooked on it! No joke, my stepdad started buying them in bulk Gf/vegan Pumpkin loaf is also delicious! I'm hoping for more gf options one day. Maybe a gf blueberry (or mixed berry!) muffin/loaf?? Fair warning, last I checked: gf products are not recommended for people with celiac/severe allergy because they don't have a dedicated gf oven/surface, etc etc. The base is made with oat flour, and doesn't specify if it's certified gluten free oat flour or not. Personally, I've never reacted to it. But it's up to you! They have a restroom available for customers as well as some indoor seating and plentiful outdoor patio seating with umbrellas! Technically, you could even walk to Susan's from the Croton train station or vice versa (though the roads do get busy, so be careful!) They of course have so many gluten-full options: cakes, pies, cinnamon rolls, bars, cookies, and even empanadas... Can't say I've had they pleasure of trying them though they look delicious! read more

Last year we ordered a chocolate cake for a birthday, and we received a vanilla cake. Okay, maybe mistakes happen. But this year we ordered another birthday cake and wrote "chocolate" in the email and said it on the phone. And we received another vanilla cake. Feels like chocolate vs vanilla should be a pretty fundamental thing when it comes to cakes. Either way, we won't be ordering from them again. +1 star because the cakes looked pretty good and were well executed in terms of style and quality. Wrong flavored cake is still pretty good cake. And they didn't use fondant, which is appreciated. I just don't think we can abide two cakes where the order form was more or less ignored. We love Baked by Susan! The empanadas and strawberry shortcake have always been family favorites. Recently they baked a dozen cupcakes to reveal the gender of our second child. The cupcakes were fun and beautiful.
