Three stars, and I'll be upfront that location is doing some heavy lifting here. In a small town with limited options, this place fills a gap. In a larger city, it would struggle to compete. The building itself is a highlight, a charming old historic structure with genuine ambiance that a lot of restaurants would kill for. The waitstaff were friendly and attentive, and the bathrooms were clean. On the hospitality side, no complaints. The food is where things fall apart. They bill themselves as a pub, but the beer selection is canned only, which is a stretch of the concept. The menu leans entirely on frozen, fried fare cooked in oil that has seen better days. It's the kind of food that makes you appreciate what pub food is supposed to be. If you're passing through and need a meal, it works. Go in with modest expectations, enjoy the building, and appreciate the service. Just don't go in hungry for anything memorable. read more

On our way to Moab, we stopped to check out Helper. It's a cute town with a few interesting shops and galleries. Hungry for lunch, we ended up here -- literally the only place in town that was serving at the time. The restaurant is in an old building (like the rest on Main Street) with big front windows. Inside, it's large and spacious, with a wide-open area in the middle and a second-level balcony that looks down on the lower floor. Lots of history in the space. There were several other groups dining when we arrived. It was reasonably quiet and easy to have a conversation. We were greeted right away and took a small table. After getting some water, we ordered beverages and food: a BLT sandwich and the Steak Quesadilla. It took a while for our food to arrive, but the server explained there had been a mix-up and they had to remake our order. When it came out, everything was fresh and hot. The quesadilla was nicely grilled, and the steak had a lot of fat (which I like, though others may not). The BLT came on thick bread, so it was best eaten open-faced. After the food arrived, we didn't see much of our server again. There wasn't any check-in on how the food was until the bill came. Service was efficient, but not especially friendly. We also weren't told, but later discovered, that you don't pay the server -- there's a cashier at the back near the kitchen where you settle your bill. Overall, a decent lunch, but not a place I'd put on my "come back to" list. read more

Best place in Helper to eat. The atmosphere is really cool. The building was built back in 1906 as part of helpers commercial development. The restaurant opened in 2010 so has been around for some time. The people are friendly and the service was quick. I had the French dip with fries. The wife had the grilled cheese with the cheese on the outside as well. She said the grilled cheese was ok but was glad the cheese was Crispy or it would have been mushy. She had the home made chips. The French dip was really good and the fries are your greasy type which I love. The chips had a bbq spice in them so of you don't want that just tell them to leave it off. read more

My family stopped here on our way home from Goblin Valley. The building is really old and cool looking. The bathroom is also adorable. The service was quick and attentive but not overbearing. We were all really pleased with our food. A couple of us had asked for modifications to our meals and they got all of them right. What a find!! Stopped in Helper to visit the museum (another great place). had a Reuben, green chille (oh my), and hand cut fries. Everything was delicious and the waitress was over the top helpful. My kids all demolished their food. No scraps left for me. We travel from Salt Lake to Moab at least once a year and finally have a go to place for lunch and a break. This was one of the worst dining experiences we've had in a long time. The food was beyond disappointing--think cafeteria food, but somehow worse. We ordered the fish and chips with a salad and the chicken fried steak with soup. The soup was completely inedible, and the salad was literally just a pile of romaine with a few sad toppings thrown on. Both entrées were bland, poorly prepared, and definitely not worth finishing. For two meals that neither of us could stomach, the bill came to over $60, which made the whole experience feel like a total rip-off. Overpriced, low-quality, and absolutely not worth it. Save your money and go anywhere else. To top it all off my husband and I woke up in the middle of the night with a horrible stomach ache. read more

Despite that fact, the energy was chill and we were quickly given drinks --btw the BEST Arnold Palmer I've had in a very long time --- and our order taken. I had just enough time to admire the gorgeous greenery and art on the second floor 'catwalk' and then our food arrived. I ordered the Anasazi grilled sandwich And the rock chips. Rock chips are absolutely fabulous potato chips, toasted to perfection. My sandwich was amazing! The cheese was melted, the chili's spicy but not overwhelming and the turkey was roasted as well..My husband ordered the patty melt and fries. He gave it a big thumbs up! We have been in Helper for about 18 hours total and have been to Balance Rock three times! Friday night for dinner, then takeout, then breakfast. Everything we tried is amazing and this is a must-stop in Helper right on the charming little Main Street. If you're not from Utah, you might not understand a "scone," but it is like a doughy fried fluffy bread served with honey butter. It is included with most meals and they are perfect. We also tried the chicken fried steak, grilled lemon pepper chicken, hamburger, and clam chowder for dinner and loved it all. For breakfast, we loved the eggs, omelet, hash browns, toast, sausage, coffee, and yes ... another scone. We purchased some local art there also! It's a spacious building that's light and airy but they have retained many of the original elements. The locals who work here are super friendly and have lots of good recommendations for local activities. Extra bonus shout out to Darcy who was so nice and Ruth, who helped me find the owner of our Air BnB after I locked myself out with my phone inside! read more

Stopped in Helper on the way home from Moab to check out the local artists. The restaurant was Lovely and Quirky inside, BUT food was barely above average. There were four of us so we sampled 4 lunch entries. The chocolate cake was dry and too old. Waitresses were snappy and rude. When i went to the bar and asked that the cake was added to the bill, she slammed the new receipts down on the bar and took off. We did buy a beautiful Tim Morse painting across the street before leaving town. read more

Best cafe in town!! Well, the only cafe in town. Helper is an amazing little town with an explosive and exiting history. They do some great eggs and bacon. Some of the other items can get pretty heavy, like the country fries, but dang tasty!! The service is just okay. They don't really have any competition, so they know they don't really have to pay too much attention to a single dude ... but I have been ignored for a while waiting for my takeout while it sat on the shelf, ready to go, all while the waitstaff fluttered around me until all the rest of the food was distributed to the entire room. I get that they want it to be fresh, but taking my money and giving me my food would've only taken a minute of their time.. good for them for making sure the diners in the room were taken care of while my eggs get colder.. I am capable of giving a tip too, but I definitely won't tip if they won't serve. The setting is fantastic with killer views of the book cliffs right outside and it's a quaint little town. All in all, I would recommend having breakfast here, just be aware you might get a little ignored.. Three stars out of four. (5 stars only happens when the place goes above and beyond) read more

This restaurant is a mix between small town diner and pub. It's not really either of them, but it takes the best of both and mashes them together. It's a spacious, two story place with open seating on the main floor and what appeared to be an art gallery upstairs (I did not venture up and didn't see anyone else up there, so I stayed put.) The food is good-a step above a chain restaurant but not anything so fantastic that you have to drive out of your way to go here. But worthy of a stop is you are in town and looking for a meal. I guess, due to COVID, that they are taking reservations. When my family walked in, we were asked if we had a reservation, and were still seated with out one-we got lucky. The next few groups that came in either had to wait or decided to check back later. Service is friendly-the server seemed a bit overwhelmed by a large group, but still checked in on us periodically. I think we were a nice reprieve for her from the 10 people at the large table. read more

Halfway between Moab and Park City is this amazing gem in the tiny town of Helper population 2,000. Historic Main Street could be a movie set. Menu at Balance Rock was extensive. Huge portions and so delicious! Chili was to die for. Very clean and beautiful historic building. Great find! read more

This is my first time coming to this place while visiting the area. If I wasn't with family I wouldn't have known this place existed. It's in the old part of town on Helper Main. The food was quick and fast and most importantly Delicious. The steak was medium well the way I like it. It was juicy and tasty. The fries were darker then I expected and I thought might be hard and burnt. Totally opposite. The salad on the other hand was mediocre to say the least. Great little spot to eat in Helper! The staff is friendly and fun. The food is quality, fresh, and varied. I think a lot of people come back here for its casual atmosphere, great drinks, and big tables for getting together. We had their French toast and Gomer Pile. Both were delicious and filling. In contrast, we had similar plates in Moab the day before, and it was bland and disappointing. Not here though! Every bite was flavorful and enjoyable. The bathroom was fun too. Staff of so friendly. And the place clearly is a local favorite as everyone seems to know each other. Don't let that discourage you, they are happy to have guests. Now for the food. This is what so many similar places try to mail and just fail. They do it right. Perfectly crisp chicken friend stake that holds up to the gravy (which is gravy not just paste.)
