Great sandwiches, I got mine spicy! Turkey, swiss, bacon and avacado. Very busy at lunch, expect a wait.

Very tasty sandwich. I got the Italian cold cuts sub with spicy sauce. The sandwich was very filling, and had really good bread, nice and fresh. Fairly quiet inside, maybe not the most ambience but hey, I was way more interested in getting a decent sub sandwich than anything else. I thought the prices were very fair. The shop itself is a little hard to spot, it's in the back of the lot with a small sign. It's a big parking lot with it's own mini parking lot kinda seperating it from the main lot. Probably easier to enter on Balboa but I had no problem parking in the main lot and walking, really not a big deal, unless you have small kids or something and want a closer spot. Will definitely be back in the future to try the other sub varieties. read more

Ok. Here's the deal. This guy loves food, particularly BBQ. If there is a BBQ special get that. He makes it himself behind the shop or some such. You will not be disappointed. There's passion in that food. The bread is good and the regular cold cuts and such are better than most but get the stuff he's making that day and you will win big. read more

If I can give this shop more than 5 stars I would! The sandwiches are delicious!!! I order pick up and it's usually ready in about 15 minutes. They are bigger than your average sandwich. My favorite is the turkey, avocado and Swiss. Everything about it tastes amazing. The special and the tri tip are favorites also! We've tried a few of them and I'd say whatever you pick will not disappoint. Not to mention the owner is extremely friendly! We order from here any chance we get. Been going here for more than 13+ years and it's never changed. It's actually gotten better since the new owners took over. There's more meat in their sandwiches and more toppings all around and they are no longer stingy with the secret hot sauce!!! I usually go with the Italian, add bacon and avocado or the turkey. The only thing i didnt like was the chili sauce they put on it tasted like tapatio idk if they put in on all of them or just because i ordered mine spicy. Hole in the wall place u will never want to go in if u were just passing by. But their sandwiches will blow u away especially if u love spicy food. We had the Roast beef sandwich loaded with avocados, bacon, and banana peppers and their special sandwich. They were both realllllllly good. Although the first bite was amazing the veggies were so fresh and the homemade sauce topped it off. Well, for one thing the bread is super soft and delicious, and the ingredients are extremely fresh. The owner does not skimp on the meats, cheese, veggies, and condiments. Each sandwich is carefully made with a lot of attention to detail. If you love a spicy kick to your food, you have to try the special hot sauce. I guarantee that you will not be disappointed. The owner is an amazingly nice guy who shows his passion for this art through his techniqes and knowledge of different sandwich combinations. He's always very courteous and remembers customers' names and orders. I always enjoy striking up conversations with him while I wait for my order. I took a sandwich platter to work one day, and all of my coworkers fell IN LOVE with the sandwiches!!!! Til this day, they ask me to bring them sandwiches again from Balboa Sub Shop. I've been raving about this place for over 7+ years and glad to see people are finding out how AWESOME it really is!!! Hands down the BEST sandwich in the valley is the TURKEY BACON AVOCADO SWISS WITH HOT SAUCE. Yes, you might have to wait and yes you need to go in the early afternoon, but if you really truly enjoy a fresh sandwich with quality ingredients, then wait you must and enjoy you will. The meat tastes like it's from the plastic bags you buy in the grocery store. Stay away there are much better sub shops.

My Hubby opted for Subway, I said Blah! Yelped nearby restaurants and Balboa Submarines popped up and we got sammies for the entire family! Portions are same as what you would get at subway and prices too, but fresh from bread, deli meat and toppings. Owner is a very nice guy and would much rather give him business as a small business owner than the cheap Subway shops any day! Spot is a little hidden, but worth the stop and you can't find shops like this around much. Haven't tried the HOT sandwich yet but must try the Pastrami or the BBQ Beef as he gave me a taste of the homemade BBQ sauce and must say pretty dang good! That coming from a BBQ foodie! I live in Reseda, but my dad had work on the same plaza and Sam (previous owner) made him and his coworker a sandwich (Sam said that if they didn't like the sandwich, they would have it for free). One bite and they were HOOKED. I still remember my dad coming home with the "Special" sandwiches and the deafening screeches that we made when our dad informed his coming on the phone. They weren't on the menu and you felt like a hipster when everybody else bought the menu items. In fact Sam used to have clientele who only bought the Special (we were one of them). He actually told us how to make the sandwiches after he said that he was retiring, but it wasn't the same. Sam knew how to build sandwiches using quality ingredients for a great price. He was a great guy who loved sandwiches and will probably take that secret to his grave. To be fair, I haven't been to Balboa Subs since Sam retired, and maybe Jerry isn't as bad as people describe him to be. But I still think its weird that the Special sandwich has ground beef and its only sold on Saturdays. It pains me to look at the star rating that I gave because it was so much better 4-5 years ago. read more
