You know last ownership they closing one time 4/5/6/7. You never know when they're open. Every day change. Some old guy working there They give you not even Afghan bread with your meal They give u mexicoyeee naan. New ownership they do a much better job. They treat customer good with respect. They don't run it like donkey. I say this with highest compliment: The food is almost as good as my native Herat. You should go try it. All good food. Good qaibili. Good kebab. Lots good deserts. I have been coming to Balkh Bakery for the past almost 1 year the owners have made the place more welcoming and so much more cleaner. Their Bolanis are actually the best that I have had in the Bay Area. I highly recommend it if you guys like Bolani. Nobody makes Bolanis like these guys, very thin and crispy with lots of flavors. The last time I was there I ordered the Ghaboli polo with lamb shank and let me tell you the shank was falling off the bone and extremely flavorful. It had just the right spices and the Ghaboli was also very fluffy and just the right amount of carrots and the raisins. I definitely recommend everyone that likes Afghan food to try this spot and I will promise you will love it. I normally come all the way from Danville which is 45 min away without traffic so this should tell you why I rave about Balkh Bakery. By the way not to forget the service is also amazing. A must-visit spot every time I'm back in the Bay Area for their delicious bolani. The "gandana" is my favorite. You can order ahead for takeout or enjoy it fresh there while it's still hot and crispy. They offer different spice levels, so make sure to let them know your preference when ordering. They also have a variety of other Afghan dishes on the menu which I highly recommend. Everyone there is super friendly and welcoming. I visited Balkh Bakery on May 5, 2026 with my son and my best friend. We arrived about 40 minutes before closing and decided to dine in. We were so grateful that the staff accommodated us and were kind and welcoming despite our arrival close to closing time. I ordered kabuli pulao since I'm always craving it, as well as bolani. The meat from the kabuli pulao was tender and flavorful, and there was a generous portion that easily fed my son, me, and still left leftovers for the next day. The bolani was huge- as big as a pizza honestly. At first, I was taken aback by the price, but once the food came out, I could definitely see why. The quality and portion sizes justified the cost. I ordered Balkh on DoorDash a while back and got the kabob combo plate with mantu. Everything arrived super fresh and still really hot, which honestly makes such a difference. The mantu was especially good -- really authentic flavor without being too heavy or overpowering. Overall the food was just genuinely delicious. More recently I picked up some bolani and pastries from the restaurant, and the bolani was insanely good. Also the pistachio cake is probably one of the best cakes I've had in a long time. While I was there picking up my order, I got to see the inside of the restaurant and they did a really nice job with the space. Wow! What a gem! Located in an unassuming mall, you would never have thought you'd find some yummy food here. Balkh has baked goods and a full kitchen in the back to cook up some great bulanee and kabobs (made to order). So whatever the occasion, breakfast, lunch, dinner, snack, dessert, or a party, there's something for you here. From the outside, it doesn't look like much. You wouldn't expect it to have a deli inside. When I entered, I was greeted with refrigerated cases of pastries and baked goods. Cookies, cream rolls and other desserts are visible as you enter. I ordered the potato bulanee (without the spice) and a cream roll. The bulanee took about 20 minutes to make so while that was getting handled in the back, I enjoyed my cream roll at the dining tables they had inside. The cream roll was delicious! Freshly made, crust was flaky and topped with powdered sugar to give it a nice sweetness to it. Despite the sugar topping and the cream filling, it was not too sweet. The bulanee was huge! Made fresh once you order, this gigantic treat can only fit in the pizza box they give you. It comes with the spicy sauce and yogurt. Very tasty and the potato filling was spread out evenly. The prices were a little higher than expected but relative to other places, it was reasonable for the portion of food you get. Definitely sharable. The exterior of the building makes it seem questionable but do make sure to give this place a try. Easy parking, fresh food, and excellent service makes this an unforgettable, no frills, gem in this neighborhood. Definitely worth a visit! read more

Recently, I stopped by and asked specifically if the pastries I was buying were fresh. The lady behind the counter assured me they were made that very day. Trusting her word, I brought them home and served them to our guests -- only to have one cut into theirs and find mold inside. It was embarrassing, upsetting, and inexcusable. Why lie? That moment could have been avoided with honesty. It's disappointing, especially when I think back to how much care the previous owners put into their products. After speaking with a few others, I've learned I'm not the only one noticing the decline in quality. I'm writing this review not to tear down, but to bring awareness. Okay- all the Yelpers talking about cream rolls got me curious! $2.50 for a fresh, crisp, delicious cream roll out of the fridge case. Also tried 3 kinds of cookies & a large sweet bread. Service was good & she explained what items were or contained. Prices are very fair & parking is plentiful. May go to 5 stars next time- although the listed closing is 7 pm, I was told the kitchen closed at 5. So trying kabob or bolani will have to wait for next visit. read more
