At the outset, the beer was delicious. However, before noon the restaurant was out of steak, fish and chips and another entrée don't recall. So, I ordered smashed burgers and salad. These words are difficult to my lips but it was 2 burnt black patties, on a great bun with Russian dressing lettuce and tomato maybe some chopped peppers. It was really bad. Yo add insult to injury the salad had barely any lettuce and all filler - nothing remotely tasty. Worst $18.00 burger in SF. I'll try again and hopefully have an update. read more

However, they had absolutely no stouts or porters when I went, which was devastating since Victory at Sea is one of my favorite beers. The decoration is generic and underwhelming, there are no fun views or outdoor sitting. The service was good. I ordered the Duo of Saints while my friends ordered the Watermelon Dorado and Amber Calico they tasted great. Ended up leaving and going to a gastropub after one beer. read more

This location lacks in both. The quality of food was also subpar, we ordered fish tacos and it only came with two and the fish was not very fresh. Come for the beer not for the food! Ballast on tap is always fire if you're a fan of their beer, no complaints there. However if you've been to any of the Ballast Points in SoCal you might be expecting the food to be pretty good as well. Unfortunately that is not the case here. The food was incredibly mid and I was advise you to just stick with beers. Double smash burger was bland, greasy, and underwhelming. The fish tacos were also bland. The chicken sandwich was the most decent out of the three items we got but kind of dry. You're better off going to in n out and chick fil a. The food is definitely not up to par with their socal locations which is disappointing. Also it's way too bright in there. Ambience could be better. read more

We have visited 5-6 times. It's a decent but not great brewpub, both beer and food, but a welcome addition to the area. I'd recommend their regular wings and smash burger. Burgers don't come with fries and garlic fries is $12. I'd have rates 3.5 stars but knocking 1 off due to an odd experience today. They have happy hour specials Tue-Thu between 4-6. Over are last multiple visits we have ordered more than 1 round of the hh special, and nothing on their menu suggests that you can't get seconds btw. However today when we tried to order seconds, the bartender said "oh new rule, can only order 1 per person". The weird thing is we were here the previous night and literally the guy next to us ordered seconds of the taco hh deals. Which makes me believe the particular bartender is out of the loop and is being a stickler for a not yet formal establishment-wide decision. Put it on your menu first and don't expect your patrons to off the cuff follow "new rules as of today", and in the meanwhile just follow what's been the norm. It's pretty 101 stuff. read more

I've been here a couple times already! It's always been great vibes. And I have been a fan of ballast point for many years and always dropped by when I visit San Diego over the years. They're pretty new and on the outskirts of mission bay. It's a close walk from spark social and chase arena. It was a little more busy during a home warriors game but not packed. So you will be able to grab a seat. They have a good amount of TVs so a great spot to watch the games. It's not a "sports bars" and spacious venue that could be great for families. Food and beer are good. They have pretty much a full menu and not just apps/ bar food. Fries are a must order for any occasion. I had their burger which hit the spot. Service has been great and friendly. They also use the toast app for easy ordering. Definitely recommend visiting. read more

They only take orders by phone, so basically sit down and get to work typing on your phone. Not a relaxing way to start an evening out. I was not familiar with their beers and ended up ordering a beer that wasn't to my liking because I couldn't see the whole menu on my phone screen. I also accidentally ordered two of the same thing because I couldn't tell that my first order went through and the delivery took so long I thought I must've made a mistake and ordered again. Visited Ballast Point this past Saturday with two buddies ready to enjoy the new venue near the Chase Center. The vibe is great, bright and new. Started about 12 noon ahead of the Warriors game at 530pm. The place was wide-open and we decided to do the brunch buffet. The selection had crab, oysters, beef roast. eggs benedict and other high cost items. Service was very good. Beer was very good. Had a good time at this new place. Some negatives unfortunately with the buffet. The same food sat in the warmer which over cooked the crab, pretty much over cooked everything. The roast was very dry and definitely needed some Beef au Jus to help it. If you decide to try it, I would say to get it early in the day. Finally, with our third round of beer, we didn't like the taste of two of the last stouts. We have drunk a lot of pints in our longer life and asked with we can select something else. We were refused like it was never done before. The glasses were pretty much full and we were all taken back. This literally left a bad taste in our mouths. Will return as I noted it is a great place to have a beer. Will switch away from the buffet as the burgers, fries and other food items looked great from the kitchen as they crossed our eyes from our table. Cheers. read more

Great beers, but the food was so lackluster and so expensive for what you get. I wanted to love this place, I've been to Ballast Point in Downtown Disney and that location has great food. Our favorites are the burgers and fried chicken sandwich. We got to the San Francisco location at 1pm on a Saturday and they were on the brunch menu, which is super small and doesn't include any burgers or fried chicken sandwiches... there were less than ten menu items to choose from. So we tried the fried chicken wings and waffles, and they were so bad. The chicken had no flavor and no salt, it was just a plainly battered fried chicken wing. The waffles were even worse, SO dry and had about a teaspoon of honey on them. Go for the beer, avoid the food menu. read more

The energy in the rideshare car was palpable; a mere 4 days after its grand opening we were going to be experiencing the new Ballast Point Brewery in San Francisco. Myself and my drinking/dining companions were immediately impressed by the sheer size of the space -- unusual in the city -- and pleased by its somewhat minimalistic, modern decor. We were seated at a 4-top that the staff graciously converted to a 5-top for our party. Struck by a bout of indecisiveness, we got a bit creative with the drink orders. Several of us ordered 8 oz. glasses of the beers we most desired (for me, the Sculpin Hazy IPA) and got 4 oz. minis of a couple others to try -- I tried the Watermelon Dorado Double IPA (10% ABV!!!) and the famous Grapefruit Sculpin IPA. The Watermelon had a distinct watermelon flavor and a bitter aftertaste. This one is strong, so watch out! The Grapefruit was crisp and refreshing and the Hazy was solid. Highly recommend this "DIY flight" strategy for tasting multiple beers. Now that drinks were out of the way, we moved on to food and we ordered in waves. My dining companions sampled a range of the Ballast Point fare -- from falafel bites to burrata to hamburgers to the fried chicken sandwich. At this point it should be noted that we had a few small snags with the ordering system -- one is to scan a QR code, set their individual orders, and pay for their own meal within the larger group order (there is also the option to pay for the whole group). While this system makes bill splitting simple, there were a couple of issues with the system. Nothing we couldn't overcome. The food also came out quite quickly but nothing was too hastily plated. From the first wave of food, I snagged myself a couple of French fries off of one companion's plate and it was incredibly crisp and flavorful. Couldn't ask for more in a fry. One dining companion called it "the best burger I've ever had" and another said the meal deserved a Michelin star. Talk about a rave! As for my meal, I enjoyed the fish tacos -- grilled -- and was very impressed by the quality. The tortilla had great texture, as did the fish. Delicious! Now, after enjoying a meal like that, it's customary to pay your compliments to the chef. When we saw a man in a chef's coat emerge from the kitchen we knew we simply HAD to wave him over. Meeting Executive Chef Damien was a pleasure and he appreciated our positive feedback. He seems to be well-versed in both the culinary arts and astrology. The beers were refreshing, the food was delicious, and the atmosphere was electric. Plus, a meeting with chef really took this experience over the edge. The question of whether we'll be back really isn't a question at all -- and perhaps next time we'll bring more companions and some games. Offering games or decks of cards to the patrons could elevate the experience even more, but in the meantime we'll bring our own.
