Yesterday I went into Palport Locksmith on Old Newport Blvd. with a locked antique leather bound ledger from my family without a key. It has not been opened for over a hundred years. The gentleman went to the back and pulled out a plastic bin with antique keys. He tried about 20 before he "opened the lock". I was thrilled. I asked what I owed him and he waved me away, saying it was o.k. I so appreciate that he found the right antique key to open it. It was about estate of a distant relative in Pittsburgh, who owned most of downtown Pittsburgh in 1820-1861. Even found letters from United States Internal Revenue, at the time they charged 1% of total estate. Solid customer service. A while ago, a key to a fridge at my workplace broke and they were very understanding to my plight. I brought over the twisted key and they gave me a couple of keys to bring back to my workplace to try out, free of charge. They said that if a key worked, I could call them back and pay the $3 over the phone. I'm not sure if they thought the keys would work or if I would call them back... Was recommended by an auto dealership to have a key made at Balport. I brought the expensive key blank to the store upon my scheduled appointment time. 20 minutes past the appointment time the key cutter showed up. Within 2 minutes he successfully destroyed key blank by mis-cutting the key. He did not apologize for their screwup and asked what I wanted to do. I asked that he replace the key blank and call me back when they had received it. Two weeks later with poor communication and no direct updates, I returned to get the key made. I received discourteous and cold behavior from the same key cutter. As he struggled with their cutting machines, he began cursing at their equipment. Realizing he was about to butcher another key, I asked if they really had the ability to make such a key. It was obvious they did not. I asked for the blank back and said I would take it elsewhere as it was clear they would likely destroy another blank. Again, they did not apologize for their inability to cut the key. Before leaving, I asked to talk to the owner who was on premise to discuss their difficulties. The owner blew me off and would not meet with me. I will not recommend this shop to anyone. Sad as it was once a good and reliable shop. I drove down the street to Auto Authority Lock and Key on Harbor Blvd. They were extremely knowledgable about the type of key and quickly provided me the exact key code for my specific car. They cheerfully cut the key in 10 minutes and it works perfectly. read more
