The hostess was nice enough to squeeze us in even though we had no reservation. It was a really nice interior and I liked the decor they had. Our waitress was really friendly and I really liked the fact she let us know what was specials and that she even checked the time so we knew it was still happy hour. The food was amazing! Definitely get the unicorn roll! The ribeye was also delicious. My husband liked the sunset roll and ordered their special charred salmon. I was honestly a bit disappointed in this place. I made a reservation the day before and was lucky to, as it was quite busy when we got there. I always wanted to try a nicer spot in the City Center and was therefore really excited. Upon arriving, we were seated within a few minutes and scanned the menus on the table. It took a while to get our order taken which was a little frustrating. We ended up ordering the friday the 13th roll, spicy tuna crispy rice, and salmon roll. The salmon roll was so small, which was not what I was expecting especially given the price. The friday the 13th roll was good but also not spectacular, and one of the pieces was destroyed. The spicy tuna crispy rice was probably my favorite item though the rice was a bit chewy in spots. Overall, prices are definitely higher for what its worth. Bit of a bummer... We ordered chicken karaage. It was tasteless and limp like it had been slowly fried in low heat oil rather than flash fried and then properly salted. The original lemon they served with it was so dry that there wasn't one drop of juice. We asked for an additional wedge, and they brought much better wedges. I ordered the Friday the 13th roll, and he ordered the wagyu burger. Here's where it went wrong: The burger came quickly, we waited about 5 mins for it to start getting cold bc he was waiting for my sushi. Finally, he digs in after waiting 5 mins: it had entirely too many carmelized onions (and he loves caramelized onions). He scraped off about 2 tbs, and there was still a ton left on the burger. The burger has freezer burn: it was watery and grainy (you know how you just know the flavor is off? Yeah, it was like that) My sushi never came. We were there 20 mins, and it wasn't bumpin' busy or anything. Finally, he was only able to eat about 1/2 the burger due to the taste, and my food never came so we spoke with the manager and he was super apologetic, made all the right moves by us to try and right everything. So the 2 stars are really for the food. Both Steven, our server, and the manager, Michael, we're great. It's a bummer it didn't work out. read more

Bamboo Sushi, located on the second floor of the City Center at Bishop Ranch, serves quite the modern American take on Japanese sushi. The restaurant is encased in big glass walls bringing in a lot of natural light. Just like all the surrounding restaurants in city center, they've got a very clean and modern vibe to it. We arrived at the restaurant about 45 minutes before closing, so we quickly ordered a handful of appetizers and shared the ribeye entree. We started with an order of edamame. Fairly tender with a nice snap, perfectly salted. The gomae was slightly less than traditional, being only a sweet soy sauce and covered with sesame seeds. The vegetable tempura was quite different from a traditional tempura, being heavily battered rather than a nice and light crisp, it gave quite a heavy crunch. All the pieces were absolutely massive, making it more suitable as finger food than anything. Shishito peppers were an interesting twist with a slightly sweet and sticky sauce on top. I wasn't too disappointed, since it was actually quite an interesting twist, pleasantly sweet and savory, topped with bonito flakes. The worst part was when the ribeye came out. I requested mid-rare and in turn got a steak that was quite under blue rare, which was surprising to me considering the steak is served sliced, so anyone would be able to see that the meat is really under. I'm not one to really return a steak if it comes back rare, but blue is a bit too under for my taste. I bring this up with the waiter, he comes back with an absolutely torched beyond well-done steak. At this point I just bite my tongue and smile, as I don't want a spit-laden steak to come back requesting a third steak. Despite being served a dry piece of meat, I could tell the sauce and wasabi on top would've been a delicious addition to the meal. (Don't take this the wrong way -- Our waiter was an absolute pleasure to be served by. Very friendly, very quick. Drinks were replenished when they got low. Checked on us a bunch. No issues.) A lot of what happened with the steak could be understood as it was nearing closing time and the kitchen was probably trying to push out the steak as soon as possible, but it really was truly a shame that it was rushed. read more

I came in and although it was super busy I was able to get no wait and a seat at the sushi bar. The food came pretty quick, and the restaurant itself is pretty loud because of how close the seats are and how many tables there are. The service was good and the price was fine. If there's one roll you shouldn't miss it's the GREEN MACHINE. Get it topped with salmon. Also, their Nigiri is really yum. We've gotten the steelhead and a variety of other types on visits and they've all been outstanding. The fish is prepared so well and cut perfectly. Every single time we have eaten here the food has been absolutely amazing and fresh. The service and ambiance is great, they're very attentive and located in Bishop Ranch, there's also tons of places to walk around to before or afterwards. Nothing beats fresh fish and this place has just that! The rolls are tasty, but not always as flavorful as I'd like. I really LOVE spicy food and some of the items that say "spicy" just aren't spicy enough for me, but if you enjoy a milder flavor then you'll be good to go! First off, I received no chopsticks, sauce, ginger, or wasabi, which are pretty standard accompaniments for sushi. The rice itself was dry and tasteless, which made the whole experience less enjoyable. I have no idea why this sushi is called "unicorn"--it didn't have anything special about it at all. One of the things that I appreciate about Bamboo Sushi is it's extensive menu. I came with a big group of friends and those that don't like raw fish had an easy time selecting menu items they did like (wagyu burger and the chili garlic chicken). The waitresses and waiters were very helpful/friendly with seating our large party and with navigating the menu. One thing I did notice was that our food did take awhile to come out and when they did come it was sporadic. Some people would get their main dishes and others would receive their more than 15 minutes later. I ordered: the big island roll and the green machine rolls and I tried some other rolls from my friends. Overall, the flavor combinations of each roll were delicious and unique, but for the high price you're paying I'm not so sure the fish quality matches up. As for looks, Bamboo Sushi knows what they're doing. From their very clean and modern interior to the presentation of their dishes, Bamboo Sushi wins. We dined outdoors and ordered the following: Friday the 13th roll - Delicious and fresh tasting. Could be a little spicier IMO :) Full Circle roll - I loved the fresh watercress with fried onions on top as it was like a mini salad alongside the sushi. Hawaiian Kanpachi nigiri - super tender, melt in your mouth! The tiny bit of truffle salt sprinkled on top was perfect. Didn't need to dip it in shoyu. I was disappointed to NOT see the Tipsy Pear roll on the menu as it was one of my favorite rolls. Hope it's back on the menu soon. Bamboo sushi is following all CAL-Osha guidelines. Tables are set far apart, all staff are wearing face masks, and the menu is accessed via a QR code taped to the table. Super friendly service from Jasleena, too! NOTE: Please be mindful of Bamboo Sushi's business hours as we didn't know they close at 7pm on Thursdays. Luckily, we arrived at 6pm.... Flavors didn't over power the fresh fish and they had a good variety of dishes that you don't see at your typical sushi restaurant. I hesitated in trying this place for a while since I wasn't sure how it would turn out. Well, with a celebration dinner here, I finally got to try it. Note that I did not pay for this dinner so I can't comment on the prices or its value aspect. I arrived early so I checked out the cocktail menu. They had several interesting drinks that I wanted to try, but being a whiskey guy, I had to order the Cabin Fever. It had both Japanese whiskey and Bourbon. Hard to say no to that :P I remember the bourbon stood out a bit more since Japanese whiskey's usually smooth. A friend and I were keen on trying their sake. Our server (darn, I didn't get her name) was very knowledgeable in sake and she described each one. My friend and I ended up splitting all 3 sakes. The Happy Owl tasted generic and it was smooth so almost anyone would like it. The Olive was very light, but crisp. Our server was right that if you liked white wine, you'd probably like this sake. It was so refreshing that I would sip on it first even before consuming the appetizers. The Mushroom Bouquet was our favorite as it packed the most flavor and had a complexity that the other 2 sakes could not compete. This was buffet style so we had to get our own food. The appetizers were good, but especially the cauliflower, I thought it was some sort of meat initially. The chicken karaage did not taste as dry as it looked so that was a plus. There was a lot of sushi rolls that we had. I did enjoy them, but I didn't pay much attention. Since I didn't order, I am not quite sure about their names. But I didn't care at that time either as the alcohol had kicked in. I also ordered an Almanac Love Hazy IPA. Our server said she doesn't like IPA, but she'd drink this one. It sure was hazy and very easy to drink. This was my palate cleanser at the end of the meal. I would like to come back and focus more on the meal and food items next time =P read more

Bamboo Sushi is a Portland-based sushi restaurant with a goal to elevate Japanese cuisine with a heavy emphasis on sustainability. The result is a modern dining experience that is great for dates, a night out with friends for nigiri, or sake before a movie. According to our waitress who was polite and attentive, the menu was very limited as the restaurant is still adapting to the re-opening of Contra Costa County. This supposedly was the reason that some simple Japanese staples like unagi, were not on the menu anywhere. When we asked if the kitchen could make a Dragon Roll, our request could not be accommodated. Sadly, this immediately gave me the impression that the six "Signature Rolls" and the six "Traditional Rolls" on the menu are the only ones the kitchen is capable of producing. Setting aside the slightly disappointing sparsity of the menu, there were some menu items we definitely enjoyed. The vegetable and shrimp tempura were perfectly battered and fried and the Spicy Tuna Crispy Rice dish is the perfect blend of sweetness, spiciness, and crunch. The four signature rolls we tasted were fresh, but pretty on par with other standard sushi restaurants in the area. The Chicken Karaage was saltless and the dill kewpie-style mayo it came with did nothing to help elevate its flavor. Overall, we had a good experience at Bamboo Sushi but I have to give it three stars simply because I have never been to a Japanese restaurant that lacked staple Japanese menu items like freshwater eel (unagi) and saba nigiri. While there were a couple standouts, we were not blown away by the food. I have to give some grace for the fact that they were allegedly operating with a very limited temporary menu. If this is truly the case, I would be very happy to come back when the restaurant is completely up to speed and give it another chance. Amazing. Found this gem by accident. Visited the City Center for the first time. The service and food quality is outstanding. One thing about a lot of sushi places is that the fish typically has a very bland taste. Not at Bamboo Sushi, each variety had it's unique flavor. Also the unlike most Japanese restaurants where the sushi is just cut to size, the people at Bamboo takes the time to slice each piece to precision.
