The kwetiau came out first, and we assumed the nasi lemak would follow shortly, so we started eating. Even after we finished the kwetiau, we still had to wait a bit longer for the nasi lemak to arrive. That said, the food was delicious and full of flavor. I've never experienced such unprofessional management at a restaurant in my life. The manager set the tone for the entire evening, and unfortunately that tone was rude, dismissive, and unbelievably hostile. From the moment we had a small issue with our order, instead of trying to help, the manager acted annoyed that we even brought it up. What should have been a simple correction turned into an argument. The manager interrupted constantly, rolled their eyes while we were speaking, and spoke to both customers and staff with a level of disrespect that was honestly uncomfortable to witness. You could tell the employees were tense and afraid to say anything, which probably explains why the service was so disorganized. The worst part was how unapologetic they were. Rather than taking responsibility for mistakes, the manager blamed the kitchen, blamed the servers, and somehow even blamed us. At one point they walked away mid-conversation while we were still talking, which perfectly summed up the entire experience. I stopped by on a Sunday afternoon. I had a reservation, so got a seat in 10 minutes. Everything I had from here was flavorful. Beef banana leaf rice was my favorite item. My friend and I ordered a Roti Prata and a Combination Satay (beef and chicken thigh) as appetizers; Nyonya Shaking Beef, a bowl of Coconut Rice, and Pad See Ew as main course; and then Black Sticky Rice with Mangoes for dessert. Their Roti Prata was excellent as usual, the curry sauce went perfectly well with the warm, fluffy, and crispy bread. The beef and chicken skewers in the satay were tender and juicy and perfectly grilled. Both entrees were really delectable and flavorful. This restaurant is my family's go to whenever we want a nice sit-down dinner. Our favorites are the Roti Prata (duh), Char Kueh Teow, Sizzling Beef Cubes, and Chicken Curry Laksa Mee. The Roti has a light crisp and chew, my family always order 2 portions every time we go. Laksa Mee is a must with their coconut rice - match made in heaven. The sizzling beef cubes are tender and peppery. Char Kueh Teow packs a strong smoky wok flavor. We're Teochew, and we think it's some of the best in the Bay. Honorable mention is their Pineapple Fried Rice. Their particular spin on it is quite nutty as they add a decent amount of cashews. The rice is a bit too moist for my taste, but still pretty good. Since they were so busy, they told us we only had an eating time of 1.5 hours which was fine by us. Our server came to us promptly to get started. All of the food came out pretty quickly. We started off with the roti prata and it was good! The roti was very flaky, I wish it was a bit thicker. Their coconut soup was delicious. The tom yum was very spicy and lacked depth. Their pad Thai and mi goreng noodles were the stars. The pineapple fried rice was terrible - super mushy and didn't taste like normal fried rice. Apparently it usually comes in an actual pineapple but it seems they ran out. The green curry was good, a bit spicy. The basil shrimp was also great. We ordered the eggplant and that didn't come out, but glad it didn't because we had too much food. The drinks were also okay - nothing outstanding. The white sangria was fruity but not strong at all. Galangal soup was good, just that they had too many big chunks of vegetables particularly tomatoes contributing to the volume and they had added green thai chilli. These are our favorites and we order them every time: - Rendang beef (hearty and warm for the winter) - Hainan chicken with turmeric rice (cool and refreshing in the summers) - Pineapple chicken fried rice - Roti prata (light and crispy with just a hint of sweetness - beloved by the kids!) Amazingly enough, it's been nearly three years since we were here last. Our friends made reservations for 6pm on a Saturday night and we avoided having to wait. The outdoor seating apparently wasn't being used because the pop-ups were all in a lowered position. There appeared to be a small wait from the time we arrived until we left but certainly not the crazy lines that we used to see. There were a few open tables inside when we arrived and we were seated immediately. Over the next 10 or 15 minutes, the dining room appeared to be full. We were given the option to use our phones for QR ordering or to see regular menus. I will always prefer the regular menu just to save eyestrain. Roti Telur - 3 - and drinks were the first things we ordered while we looked over the rest of the menu. This is the first time that we did not love this dish. It felt like it had been sitting around because it was not hot in temperature. For whatever reason, the egg flavor didn't "pop". Grilled Pineapple Salad - 5 - this dish was spot on with a blend of hot and cold, sweet and not sweet, slivers of nuts. Penang Sizzling Scallops - 5 - the scallops were sweet and cooked well. the size is U-10 which means under 10 to the lb, a good size! The sauce is amazing and just a little really adds flavor to steamed or brown rice. One downside is that there were only 4 scallops on this order. That's one each for the four of us. While priced comparable to Seafood restaurants for the quality and quantity, I would have happily paid more for more. Not another full order though, maybe 1/2 at the same price point per scallop. Malay Sizzling Lamb - 5 - another winner flavor wise. The lamb was tender, and the sauce was also delicious. Banana Leaf wrapped Grilled Chilean Seabass - 5 - tender, well cooked fish in a complex sauce made of chopped herbs, spice, lemon grass, sambal chili, and okra. Our order taker tried to convince us to order another fish instead because this one would take at least 30 minutes. We weren't in a hurry and I'm glad my wife stuck to her guns. He had also told us that the other fish would be a different flavor but just as nice. Pass! Huat Dan Ho - 3 - I believe that the last two times I had this dish, it was easily a 5. This trip was disappointing. I'm not sure if it was a matter of timing or just bad luck. The flavors weren't as strong as before and the serving temperature was less than idea. Were we too slow to eat it? Or had it sat at the pass for too long? It certainly looked hot when delivered to the table and the server was very careful when placing it on our table because this dish is very liquid and full to the edges. Deep-Fried Mango Ice Cream wrapped in Taro Cake, Deep-Fried Banana with Whipped Cream & Chocolate - 5 - is a wonderful dessert and more than enough for four to share. Yes, I could have ate more, but I really don't need it. Service was pretty good. Empty plates were taken away promptly. An eye was kept on our drinks to make sure that we stayed hydrated. It was disappointing that the Roti Telur and Huat Don Ho were not hot, especially when I had been bragging that these two dishes by themselves would bring me great satisfaction. :::sigh::: Yes, we'll be back again. I still don't know why this place has only 3 stars. I've been here 3 times and every time it's been great. The flavors are bold and authentic, the execution of everything is near perfect, and well service. I guess that's why it's not higher than 3 stars. If you get here at the wrong time, you're going to be waitinga while. When we got there, we sat down, ordered and the waiter said they just had their dinner to go order rush go through and it was before the in house dinner rush hit. I love Banana Leaf and have been going here for years. And in all of those years I only order two things because I really enjoy them here: Roti Prata and Huat Dan Ho noodles. I am a sucker for gravy rice noodles, and Banana Leaf has never failed me in portion and flavor. I always ask for the Huat Dan Ho with no seafood because I typically don't eat seafood, and the plate always comes out looking just as full as it would if ordered with no modifications. I love how garlicky the sauce is, and you can literally see so many pieces of diced garlic in it. The roti prata speaks for itself, in my opinion. The dishes were placed at the edge of the table without any acknowledgment or interaction, and we felt the service was inattentive. Because of our experience, we chose not to leave an additional tip. When I paid, the waiter said, "Are you serious?" After we left, someone I believe was the manager came outside and told us that tipping is mandatory in California and pressured us to leave a tip. To my knowledge, tipping in California is customary but not legally mandatory. The interaction left us feeling uncomfortable and overshadowed our meal. I wouldn't recommend this restaurant if you're dining as a party of two. Based on my experience, it felt like larger groups received much better service, likely because parties of four or more have an automatic 18% gratuity added to their bill. All the food comes out fast and the service is great too. Everything is plated beautifully and the mango and pineapple rice dishes come in an empty mango/pineapple. Comparing it to the equivalent - Layang Layang, I will say I like this place more significantly. The food is much better and the beef rendang specifically is much softer and tender. Their menu had a wide variety of options, from noodles, vegetables, to seafood/chicken/beef entrees. We got the Hainan chicken rice, Chow Kueh Teow (stir fried rice noodles), and Belachan Kang Kung (Ong Choy with shrimp paste). The food portion was pretty generous. Hainan chicken was super tender. It came with sweet and sour dipping sauce and chicken rice. Kang Kung was my favorite veggie and it came out great with the shrimp paste. Chow Kueh Teow was not bad too, although it was a little too oily for me. Chiw Kueh Teow was topped with many veggies and seafood such as shrimp, squid, eggs, bean sprouts, and onions. Located in Milpitas, parking is plentiful and easy to find. Noise level is average. There's a lot of seating both inside and outside. Staff was very attentive and kind. My mom took me for my first time and wow. The food was delicious, amazing flavors! We also tried the beef satay & wow so delicious and tender. Their peanut sauce was very flavorful. Everything was so good we ate most of it before I could take a before photo LOL! Service was okay. You better know what you're ordering, because they only came to us the receive or order and to drop off the bill, we flagged someone down to order dessert. It was pretty busy by 12:20, so make sure you plan your time accordingly! I will definitely go back! They have outside and inside seating. I sat outside because I had my senior dog with me in her stroller, so they allowed her to be with us. She's also very quiet so no one ever realizes she's there lol. read more

We came here very often. It is a restaurant for more than 30 years in the Bay Area. However, their laksa, shrimp noodle and other noodle are very Malaysia tastes. Not to mention they're one of the kind ice cream inside taro desert. I highly recommend. Come and try it read more

Ordered: Roti Prata, Rendang with Beef Shank, Pad See Ew A little gem in Milpitas! I've tried other dishes here, but none hit the same as the 3 i would go back for. The Roti Prata is thin, crispy and chewy all at the same time and paired with the curry sauce, it's so flavorful! The Rendang was one of my favorites here because the meat was very tender and the sauce it was in was not salty and yet still so flavorful. We paired this with their turmeric rice and everything was such a good balance. Last, the pad see ew would probably be my favorite ever. I'm the type of person who really likes a smoky pad see ew and this was perfectly smoky, delicious and packed with flavor. Everything here is easily shareable so I'd recommend going with a big group to try everything! Overall, would come back to get the same dishes. The Roti has a light crisp and chewy, a favorite every time we go. A must is their coconut rice and cumin rice - match made in heaven. The sizzling beef cubes are tender and peppery. Char Kueh Teow packs a strong smoky wok flavor. Dessert go for the Pandan Panna Cotta very creamy and smooth and not too sweet. read more
