The dough of both dishes were steamed nicely and the portion of the rice rolls were very impressive (6 shrimps per portion). Now the fried shrimp beancurd rolls were surprisingly extremely underrated. They were crispy on the outside yet the shrimp filling was bountiful and delicious, 100% worth ordering. We ordered a special set menu that included peking duck, special shrimp egg rolls, wagyu shaking beef, and more! The food definitely feels clean and unique vs some other places. I don't know even how to begin this review, because this place was BEYOND AWFUL. We have been here many times over the years because of our Chinese family friends. First, let's start with cleanliness. The bathroom was disgusting. If this is where the cooks relieve and wash their hands, yikes! Literally a biohazard. Trash overflowing and everything was sticky and the toilets were very dirty. Just yikes. Also if you look at the dining inspection score on the Santa Clara county website, it scored a literal 20/100. This is worse than competitors for kitchen cleanliness. This explains the many food poisoning reviews here. We got served raw food and things that looked a bit spoiled here and luckily we spotted it and didn't get sick. Read the inspection report and it's really disgusting. I'm not sure how this place is still open. I get service at Chinese restaurants serving primarily Chinese immigrants isn't top tier, but this place takes it to the next level in being abysmal. The front desk staff is belligerent and they DO NOT RESPECT YOUR RESERVATION and make you stand outside and wait for up to 30 minutes. This happened to us a couple times. Also if you are an English speaker/non Chinese speaker, the front desk staff only speaks mandarin for the most part so good luck too if you are a Cantonese speaker. They also hold and reserve table numbers for refused to jump the waitlist and reservations. That was just the host staff, the waiters were not better. Waiters were very hard to flag down and sometimes they see you and ignore you because they don't want to serve you and do their job. They also are too busy sometimes and seem overworked so their employer (a very rich duo of brothers) need to treat their employees better and train them better so they have a better attitude for customers. We also had one waiter when cleaning our table poured our water glasses into a bowl then dumped in onto the carpet onto the ground which was a first for me and my family. This was very memorable in a bad way. The environment is also very uncomfortable to dine in. The seating is packed in so tight that it's so loud you can't hear the other people at your table. It's also a fire hazard since several emergency exits were visibly blocked by tables, chairs, or people crowding at the entrance. I've seen reviews here and on Google claiming to have reported the restaurant to the fire marshal. This seems to be true because there were several times the restaurant de densified the dining room before densifying it again weeks later. If a fire broke out, this would be deadly due to exits being blocked and the restaurant being over capacity. This place is just waiting for something really bad to happen. This place is also very expensive and claims to be an elevated authentic dim sum experience targeting Chinese immigrants and ABCs. And it sucks for the price paid given the food, service, and environment (and the literal fire danger they put you in) Finally, as many have complained here, there is a mandatory 18% gratuity and they demand a tip on top of it. They hide it from their menu so you don't find out, but that's illegal in California to hide a mandatory gratuity. Honestly, the gratuity isn't worth it for the nasty service and food anyways. The only have it because the owners know their restaurant is so bad they have to put a gratuity because otherwise people won't pay tips. What a joke of a business, I'm not sure why so many people still support it by singing its praises here and patronizing a restaurant that clearly doesn't care about either its employees or customer. read more

As we are waiting, tables for parties of 7 or 10 and 11 were being fulfilled. I checked in twice to ask about our group of 6 and she was very rude and snobby as she informed me that large parties were being seated first. We had been waiting for an hour and they were not calling anyone for party of 6. So ridiculous. After waiting for 1.5 hours, we were finally seated and guess what? The table that we were seated at has 7 seats -- I looked at the other tables that were empty and they also had 7 seats -- meaning that at any point when a table for 6 or 7 was available, we, party of 6, could have been seated but she chose not to seat us and have us wait. Once we were seated, everything moved rather quickly. We were given a menu to order -- we ordered and within 10-15 minutes, everything was brought out to us. No wait time for the food, it was very fast. The food was decent but nothing memorable. Overpriced dim sum, overpriced food. As much I love Chinese food, I don't see myself coming back to this location because the wait times are crazy even if you come early. We ordered the crispy noodles with mixed seafood, honey walnut prawns, hot and sour soup, and pork buns. Everything tasted great and the portion sizes were more than enough for two people. Came to Koi Palace on a Saturday at 12:45 and waited probably around an hour for a table for 4. There seems to be some sort of app or website to check your status, but we couldn't seem to get it work - you get a number and have to be in the area when they call your number, and they seem to have a tiered numbering system based on the size of your party. Once seated, there's a paper menu to order off of, and a list of specials separately, and food starts coming out quite quickly after they take your order. The inside is a classic chinese banquet hall vibe, with plenty of tables jam packed into a warm brightly lit open space. We got a large assortment of thinks and liked most of them, but the specials we ordered, the roast squab and lobster noodles, really did stand out as really tasty and exceptional! Of the more standard menu items, the chicken feet were perfectly soft and seasoned, the durian puffs were light and flaky without being oily, and the siu mai were tender and generously filled. The crab roe xlb, turnip cakes, and shrimp rice rolls were okay but nothing memorable. Overall, one of the better dimsum options in the area, especially if you're celebrating something special since the wait can be a bit much to be a frequent rotation dim sum place in my opinion. Whenever I have relative visit from Canada we will definitely have dimsum at Koi Palace, it's a ritual for my family. I have been coming here for years and this place is still popular likes the first time I ever dine-in here. Always so busy during their dimsum hours, wait time could take up to 1-1:30 hour on the weekend, so be prepared. Located on the 2nd floor of Milpitas Ulferts Center, you will need to take the escalator or elevator to reach the entrance. The hospitality and service here are all about speed and efficient, so make sure to order fast, eat fast, and leave fast lol. The restaurant itself is really spacious, very bright and clean, definitely suitable for big family and big group. People do wedding banquet here all the time. They also have live a seafood tank by the wall. Koi Palace food has been consistently good for years, my family always orders all the dimsum staple likes Hagao, Siumai, Xiaolongbao, Pork Ribs, Chicken Feets, Shrimp rice roll, and other side dishes. My favorite dimsum is the Chiu Chow Dumpling and Durian Puff, another item that I'm totally recommended is Hand Roasted Suckling Pig Slices from their BBQ section, literally the best roasted pork I ever had in the Bay Area. Koi Place definitely more on the expensive side of Cantonese food restaurant, but it came with great quality and fresh ingredients, totally worth it for special occasions likes family reunion in my case. I saw a few 1* reviews and thought "must be haters." Nah that's legit esp for dinner at the Palace. Last night two of us go there for dinner had the flavored peanuts (probably the best thing going for them) and waited at least 10 minutes to order. Upon ordering the waiter barely looked at us and quickly wrote the items down giving us no room for any give and take. We ordered the Yang Zhou fried rice, which was bland af, hardly any meat or veggies. The shrimp were large I give them that, but probably like only 5 in the dish. The string beans were OK they were crispy enough. The honey walnut shrimp was also decent nothing great. Each averaged like $25 per pop the bill was in the $80s and there was an automatic 18% service charge included which brought it to $103 (this is service for two people and service was bad) and they also had the nerve to list additional tip options. Nah man. Money grab city. We barely had napkins, the staffing was low (this also was the case during a dim sum outing, the food is much better for dim sum) and we often waited 15 minutes in between anyone being near us for anything. Then after we settled the check the red bean soup comes out, it felt more like a drop off of supplies to charity in a third world country or something. Koi Palace is one of our go to spots for traditional dim sum in the Milpitas area. We have been going here with either family or friends since back in the day. We were here once last year but before that It has been awhile when we last visited. We finally arrived for a Saturday lunch recently since we were in the area. The Chinese restaurant is located in a nice older plaza by the McCarthy Ranch in Milpitas. Parking is accessible in the large parking lot surrounding all around the plaza. The restaurant is large with plenty of tables that get filled up rather quickly during the weekend lunch rush hours. The modern Chinese decor is traditional and bright. Koi Palace is usually bustling during peak hours and has a nice family friendly vibe. Unfortunately there are no older Asian ladies pushing dim sum carts around though. We ordered jasmine tea, a glass of wine and about 7 dishes of dim sum, Har Gow, Shui Mai, Taro Puff, Juicy Pork Dumpling, Chive Shrimp Dumpling, and 2 orders of Shrimp Rice Roll. Everything is delicious and authentic as usual. My favorite is the Taro Puff and Juicy Pork Dumpling as they both were so tasty and flavorful. The service is usually accommodating and somewhat attentive. Overall we enjoyed our experience at Koi Palace. The food was good quality. Unfortunately the price point is in the higher end now for dim sum dishes. I also have a gripe that there was already an included service charge even for our table of 3. I am understanding for a service charge for 6 or more people in your party but I did not know that they implement this service charge for parties of less than 5 or 6 people now. My family had a nice lunch on Sunday. Weekends here are especially busy. We had reservations and preordered on of their various set menu. Deposit required. The service was excellent and very attentive as we were in a secluded side room away from the noisy main dining area. At first some of the family members were like, "why are we away from everybody else?" It was good but nothing special. *King Neptune Seafood Fried Rice w/Gravy (3/5). This was ok. *Catch of the Day (Sea Bass 5/5). The fish was nicely steamed and flaky with no too many tiny bones. The soy sauce/oil is what you'd expect in a good tasting steamed fish dish with the aromatics. *Black Sesame Dessert (4/5). This was a pleasant change. We all were expecting red bean but they did not have it and brought this out. *Custard Buns (3.5/5). Nice and hot just coming off the steamer. Good! Unfortunately, I didn't catch the server's name but he provided excellent service like I said. My review is based on the banquet service. The place is cleaned and well organized. The fresh seafood display is upfront towards the entrance and front staff to escort to designated area. Banquet area is partioned with drapes to separate other guests. Food- overall it was well seasoned or very light depending on the dish. I hate having to write this review because this used to be one of my favorite places for dim sum. Unfortunately, the quality has noticeably declined over the past year. The food used to be fresh, flavorful, and consistently delicious. Lately, however, it feels like corners are being cut. Several dishes taste as though they are pre-made or frozen rather than freshly prepared, which has been disappointing. What makes this especially frustrating is that my group and I used to come here every Sunday and genuinely looked forward to it. It was a regular tradition for us. We went to Koi Palace for my mom's birthday on a Friday night, and it wasn't too busy. Known for dimsum and other classic Chinese dishes, Koi Palace provides food that has a very familiar taste and feel if that's what you grew up with. It is on the pricier side, but we really enjoyed their Peking duck set which included a soup, Peking duck, fish maw, and two dishes for four people. We also chose to get the geoduck which was $44 per pound at the time, and it was done very well! Went here on a Sunday around noon for dim sum and the overall experience was very "classic weekend dim sum" in both good and challenging ways. Parking and the wait can be intense, so plan ahead. Wait and seating -Give yourself extra time to find parking and to queue for a table, especially on weekends around lunchtime. -You can get a ticket upon arrival, make a reservation in advance, or join the waitlist via the QR code/website displayed on the monitor. -We were a party of 3 and it took about 30 minutes to get seated; seating appeared strictly first come, first served, not optimized by party size. -The waiting area inside is pretty small, so when it's cold out everyone ends up crammed inside listening for their number. -A plus: numbers are clearly called in both English and Cantonese, and also flashed on the monitor, so it's hard to miss your turn. Ambiance and service -Ambiance is exactly what you'd expect from a busy weekend dim sum spot: packed, loud, and a bit chaotic. -Service is also what you'd expect: brusque but efficient. As soon as we sat down, the server just asked "what kind of tea?" with the assumption we already knew the options, and we flagged someone down later to take our food order from the menu. Food and pacing -Dishes came out quickly and at a steady pace that felt normal for a dim sum restaurant. -Overall, the food leaned noticeably salty, so it's worth drinking plenty of water or tea throughout the meal. -Last call for food seemed to be around 2 pm, and staff did walk around the dining room announcing last call and checking if tables wanted to add anything. Payment and tip -One important note: even for our small party of 3, an 18% service charge was automatically added to the bill. -Definitely double-check your receipt so you don't tip a full amount again on top of the service charge out of habit. **If this is your very first time having dim sum and you need more guidance or hand-holding, this is probably not the best place to start.** read more

Solid dim sum This place is pretty jam packed on the wknd. Took us about 25 min for a table for 6. When you are seated, they ask for your tea order and bring it to you right away. The dim sum here is a la carte, which was slightly disappointing. They have all the usual dim sum fare, including our favs, shrimp dumplings and shrimp rolls, which were well done. The surprise hit were the scallop dumplings with black caviar, which had a great texture and umami. We finished things off with their fried sesame cake, which came out hot. We ordered some specials which I didn't really care for, but the standard menu items were delicious! Although the restaurant was very large, we still had to wait for a table. The restaurant was very busy, so it can be a little difficult to get the attention of the wait staff, but once we did, they were very accommodating to all our requests.
