First, I'd like to say that the food was excellent. Everyone in our party really enjoyed the quality, flavor, and presentation of the dishes. However, I was disappointed to discover that an automatic gratuity was added to our bill even though our party consisted of only five people. This was unexpected and was not clearly communicated to us beforehand. We believe customers should be informed when an automatic gratuity policy applies so they can understand the charges before paying. That's one star off. It's been about 15 years since my last visit to New Krung Thai on Winchester, so we decided to stop by for lunch today to celebrate my aunt's upcoming birthday. We arrived during a busy period, but the wait to be seated was only about 15 minutes, which honestly wasn't bad at all. Parking, however, was a different story. The lot is small, cramped, and tough to navigate, and street parking doesn't offer much relief. Getting a spot definitely took more effort than expected. As for the food, it was just okay -- nothing terrible, but also nothing that really stood out or felt special. Given how many great Thai options there are in San Jose now, the dishes felt a bit underwhelming. This is probably the best thai food I've ever had. Everyone has to order the Tom Kha soup and the Yellow Curry. Those dishes are phenomenal. I can't stress enough how good they are! We also ordered the fried rice, sticky coconut rice red curry. The sticky rice was great! Went amazing with the curries, the texture was amazing. The red curry was pretty good too! Also very flavorful but falls ill in comparison to the yellow curry. The fried rice was alright, but I wish we just got another order of sticky rice instead. The place was pretty packed. We had to wait 15 minutes for a party of 3, and you can't call ahead or make a reservation because it's just always really busy. It makes sense why, the food is just so good! I've ordered food from New Krung Thai through DoorDash lots of times, but yesterday visited the restaurant for lunch for the first time. My sister and I got there right when they opened at 11am and were seated immediately. It's a big restaurant, nicely decorated, with high ceilings and lots of tables with white tablecloths. Unfortunately, the acoustics are terrible. It quickly got incredibly loud inside when only a few more small tables of people arrived. It didn't help that one man was watching videos on his phone without using headphones. I can be pretty sensitive to noise, so maybe it wouldn't bother others as much as it did me. Fortunately, the food tasted just as good or better than when I have it delivered. I ordered Tom Kha Gai soup and yellow chicken curry with zero spiciness. The waitress asked if I wanted it as the lunch special, which seemed to be less expensive, so I said yes. Here is where things got confusing. First they brought me a small bowl of soup that looked nothing like the Tom Kha Gai I usually order. It was fantastic though. Then they brought out a large bowl of the actual Tom Kha Gai to share with my sister. Turns out the lunch special came with the soup of the day, so I didn't need to order extra soup. Anyway, both of my soups and the yellow chicken curry were excellent and there was plenty leftover for both of us to take home. It was not spicy, as I requested. My sister ordered a papaya salad, which I'd never tasted before, and it was delicious. Service was fast and the staff was friendly and attentive. If not for the noisiness of the dining room, I would give New Krung five stars. Super crowded on weekend nights with a somewhat limited parking lot. The food is really great, but I wouldn't personally go out of my way again for it except for weeknights. The peanut sauce was great, and the little cucumber and onion pickles on the side were a great pairing. Ended up eating the whole thing before the mains even arrived. The place is a family go to for special events and just for the bomb food. The calamari was surprisingly delicious. They add salt and pepper generously so it tastes really good with the sweet sauce they bring out. The fish curry we got was also delicious i really think the curry does wonders with the fish and it takes away some of the fishiness too. I came here on a Tuesday night at around 7:30 pm as a party of one and the place was packed mostly with larger parties. I always feel kind of bad dining out as a party of one because tip would be lass based on my total, however, the staff her made me feel so welcomed. Service was good, the waiter refilled my ice water often and got the vibe that I wasn't looking to have much interaction. There's a private parking lot but it gets filled easily when the restaurant is busy. The restaurant is quite spacious with plenty of tables. Decorations are very basic. Came here for lunch on a Friday and the place was pretty much full. As I entered the restaurant, I saw some off the menu specials on a chalk board and one item caught my attention: Massamun Curry Drumsticks served with Roti. I guess the Roti sounded good. My friend and I shared that and a lunch special with Green Beans and Pork. Lunch specials are served with Soup of the Day, Fried Wonton, Fried Eggroll, and also Steamed Rice. We also ordered Sticky Rice with Mango for dessert. Food was awesome! The Massamun Curry Drumsticks were especially delicious. The curry had a very unique and complex flavor. The chicken was perfectly cooked, tender and juicy. Even the potatoes in the sauce were very delicious. The Roti went really well with the curry sauce. It also came with a spicy Cucumber Salad that was very tasty. The lunch special was a good value. The soup was very good. The Green Beans with Pork was also yummy. My favorite Thai food restaurant. Been here many times mostly during work lunch hours. This is our go to place as it covers everyone dietary restrictions. Every dish I've tried has not disappoint. Starting with Tom yum soup, appetizers, main dish and dessert. My ultimate favorite is the garlic fried shrimp ! Mainly for the garlic. Both garlic and shrimp are deep fried with a tempura like coating. I do have to say the shrimp sometimes over cook but still good! Maybe to get the crunchy shell texture as the shrimp are not peeled. Then there's the tom yum soup. We usually go for the seafood which comes with shrimp, mussels, fish and calamari. I love the tangy sweet broth with hint of spice. Moving on to the curry! I love both the yellow and red. I like the red more but both creamy and savory. I like that the sauce is not watery. Yo can have any protein added to it or go vegetarian. Also had the basil chicken and noodle dishes. Again you cannot go wrong with any of the dishes! Just savory good not salty or over sweet. Lastly the dessert. The mango sticky rice is just sooo good. I've been going to Krung Thai since I was a teenager, introduced by a close Thai friend, and it's been a favorite ever since. Over the years the restaurant has grown into two locations, and this second one has become my go-to. After all these years, I can honestly say I've never had a bad meal here. The vibe is casual and comfortable, but you can absolutely dress up a bit for a date night and it still feels appropriate. It's also very family-friendly. On weekends it can get crowded, so expect a wait, the parking lot is small and fills up quickly, but if you go earlier in the evening, you can usually get seated pretty fast. The food is consistently excellent, the service is quick, and the staff is always welcoming. They also offer great specials, we recently tried the lobster curry for the first time and it was delicious. For Bay Area standards, the prices are very fair for the quality. I brought someone new who doesn't normally eat much Asian food, and he was genuinely impressed. He loved every dish we ordered. I've been coming for so long that I rarely take photos anymore, they just sit in my phone, which is why I don't usually post many pictures of this place. My family and I order takeout from here often and we love it. A couple weeks ago, my husband and I decided to dine in at the restaurant for the first time. The vibe was welcoming and cozy. It filled up quick with people enjoying dinner and even celebrating things like a baby shower! I have to thank Coleen P. on the great suggestion for the off-menu item Ho Mok Talay. This was so flavorful and delicious. One of the best and most interesting Thai dishes I have ever tasted. Usually I stick to my dependable favorites, but decided to branch out. I highly recommend this dish if they still have it! It's served in a coconut and the presentation is so stunning. Krung Thai is our family's go-to restaurant to celebrate birthdays. We were just there last night! The food is delicious and we order almost the same things every time. I do want to note that their pineapple fried rice was lacking last night for some reason but everything else tasted fine. The service is moderate. Not too slow to the point where you're starving. The parking lot is small, tight, and has only one point of entry and exit so you have to do 3-5 point turns when it's full. Since I was a teen, Krung Thai has been my family's go to for Thai food. There are 2 locations - this and the original location further down Winchester. We actually prefer that location because it is quieter, no fuss, and easier parking. What finally prompted me to write a review after all these years of going to both locations is the new/off menu items at New Krung Thai!!! You HAVE to order the "ho mok talay". We've tried other popular places that are just so inconsistent and we find ourselves coming back to our tried and true. You can't go wrong with the classics: - Tom kha pak - warms your soul soup with a hearty amount of veggies - pad thai - chef's kiss! a little on the sweeter side but oh so delicious - pad see ew - very classic and iconic. Deliciously savory with bouncy rice noodles A new try for us was the choo chee salmon, which really surprised us. It had a beautifully crispy skin accompanied with a sweet and savory coconut-ty curry sauce that was so delicious. The salmon itself was moist and juicy, and was delicious with some plain rice. We weren't big fans of the pineapple fried rice. It was a bit salty and the pineapple flavor wasn't really infused into the rice, just little chunks of pineapple when you happened to come across a piece. I'd skip that next time. If you're here on the weekends, I would highly recommend making a reservation by calling. Note, they only take reservations for 6 or more people. This has officially become my new favorite Thai restaurant. It's a 5 out of 5 without question. Everything I've tried so far has been amazing honestly, it's hard to even pick a favorite because every dish has been outstanding. One thing I will say: you cannot leave this restaurant without ordering the garlic shrimp. It's incredible. I also tried their Pad thai today for the first time super fresh, flavors perfectly balanced. Their spicy basil chili garlic dish is another winner. What I really appreciate is that they don't overcook the vegetables. They still have that perfect crunch, unlike many places where everything turns mushy. I'm extremely picky with Thai food (actually with all food), but this place knows exactly what they're doing. Everything comes out fresh, piping hot, and full of flavor without me having to ask. Service is always on point. My two favorite servers are John and TK they consistently give fantastic customer service. I got lucky today because it wasn't too busy when I went, but usually the place is packed. The parking lot is a bit tight, but honestly, with food this good, parking is the least of my worries. Their thai tea is on point, too. I also love their basil fried rice, and the spicy eggplant with ground chicken is my go‑to at every Thai restaurant. Here, they make it perfectly the eggplant is tender but not soggy, vibrant, and full of flavor. My husband and I have come to Nee Krung Thai twice now, and both times the service was good. The interior is a little crowded but quite large, and the parking lot is small so parking can be an issue. If I'm being completely honest, overall New Krung does not have the best Thai food I've eaten. However, what keeps us coming back is the Crying Tiger Ribeye.
