Hainan chicken undercooked, still pink. Me = toilet
    Sony V.

We used to eat CMR often, like there was a time we were eating it once a week, until the portions have gotten smaller in the last year, so it's not as often we pick up from here. But sadly, this may be the last... We ordered three hainan chicken boxes. I got the dark meat with skin, and upon opening the box, the meat was displayed skin up, didn't think anything of it, and in my belly it went. I ate half my meal and started to feel a little sick and decided to stop. Half an hour later I am met with intense stomach cramps and multiple visits to the bathroom (if you know what I mean). I'm currently at the point of being afraid of leaving the toilet hours later. I went back to examine my leftover chicken and realized my chicken was well undercooked and still pink. Yes, I probably should have checked before eating, but with the skin up and never having a problem before, I just ate it. Luckily it was just me and not my husband and kids meal, but it's enough to leave me traumatized and not returning :(.

Have not been here in a while. Still one of the best hainan chicken in the bay area! Easy kiosk ordering and food was ready in a heart beat. Casual dining tables, clean yet not too noisy. Will come again!

The Hainan Chicken Box is their most popular dish and it is such a comfort food. For the base, definitely get the Chicken Rice, which is Jasmine rice steamed in Hainanese chicken stock made with the chicken fat and juices. It was tasty and had a shiny yellow sheen. Another base option is salad greens with a romaine lettuce/cabbage mix, making it healthier. The chicken is slow poached with ginger and scallions, making it super tender and juicy. You can choose white meat only, dark meat only, or a mix of both, and then with skin or without skin. I'm glad the bones are removed and chicken is sliced into bite sized pieces for easier eating. You can select 2 sauces to serve with it. The Thai Ginger Garlic Soy sauce was savory and tangy. You NEED to get the Ginger Scallion Oil sauce! Super aromatic and delicious, I can put this on anything. I liked that they came in small plastic containers on the side, so you can decide how much to pour on or dip. It also comes with a house salad with carrots and sesame lime vinaigrette, sliced cucumbers, and cilantro, adding freshness. The fried shallots are crispy and a nice topping. The warm chicken broth soup was very flavorful and soothing. Easy to order and pay on the kiosk or online website. The pick up counter has a screen that shows the status of your order and you also get a text when it's ready. Fast service and casual atmosphere. Conveniently located inside the Eat Up food court of 99 Ranch, so you can have a nice meal after grocery shopping. Enter through the left doors to get to the food court and keep going all the way to the far left wall. There's also a good amount of seating in the food court if you wanted to dine in. Plenty of parking available. Huge portions for an affordable price. What a great combo meal. I will be back to get double of that Ginger Scallion Oil sauce!

Came back to this location for 2 times this month. Ordering online was easy. The staff there are always very friendly. Location inside ranch 99 is good too since I can also shop while I wait. But parking can a difficult at times. The grilled chicken this time was good . Also got my usual Hainan chicken. The only thing I wish they have an option for is for the side veggies. As Chinese, I prefer cooked veggies instead of salad. So that is what I would change if I have a choice. Having some cooked broccoli or choy sum would be great! And this is what I did after I got home. I added some cooked broccoli to my box.

Hainan chicken with rice to go!

One of the best Hainan chicken places in east bay! We love getting the Hainan chicken + rice with the ginger scallion and soy garlic sauces. The chicken is cooked well and not dry like other places and the rice is flavorful. It also comes with a chicken broth which complements the entree well. We also tried the chicken katsu with curry and that was also a hit. The chicken was crispy and tender inside. The curry is a Japanese curry so it's a bit sweeter but very hearty!

Chicken Meets Rice always hits the spot whenever you're feeling like having some hearty chicken and rice! Our usual order is the mix of dark and white meat chicken with skin, chicken rice, and all the fixings with Ginger Scallion Oil & Singapore chili sauce. However, we recently just tried their Chicken Katsu Curry which is for a limited time. What's super awesome is that you could also get chicken rice with this! I've never had chicken katsu curry with chicken rice before, and this was just delicious. We asked for the curry sauce to be on the side, and it was nice and flavorful. You can tell that the sauce was home-made and had some of the chicken fat in it. Fat is flavor!! Our food came out piping hot as well, even though we came towards closing time. You could order via takeout through Yelp or also dine-in, to which there is plentiful seating in the 99 ranch food court.

Raw - Hainan Chicken Box (GF)
    Ivy S.

Raw chicken. Got the Hainan Chicken with Thai Ginger Soy sauce. Things were going well until a couple bites in when the chicken texture got weird. I took a closer look and all my middle pieces were raw. I know Hainan Chicken and I know that chicken could be pink. But no, based on texture and the inability to easily shred, this was definitely raw. Now just hoping I don't get sick.

I tried the Hunan Chicken box which was delicious. I chose to have salad instead of rice and got half white and half dark meat with no skin. It came with a bowl of soup and a choice of side salad. I got the papaya salad. I finished everything as I was really hungry. The place is located in a food court. The food court is nice and clean. There is restroom in the area and also water available for you to serve yourself next to Chicken Meets Rice. The chicken was very tasty and came with two sauces that you can pick. I got the Thai Ginger Soy Sauce and Ginger Scallion Oil, both were good. I would be come back to try other dishes! This is one of the nicest food court that I have been that is inside Ranch 99.

This is Singapore style Hoi Nam chicken . The cafe is located inside Ranch 99 food court . It is convenient, efficient and good service . Chicken is tender , fresh and delicious. It comes in a bento box with salad , chicken soup , lots of chicken and rice . You can choose your sauces ( soy sauce , spicy sauce , Singapore sauce , cooked minced green onion& ginger in oil , etc ) . I usually choose dark meat and two green onion & ginger sauce . You can also choose chicken flavored rice , brown rice or salad ( no rice ) . Price is $13.99 before tax . You cannot beat this price with such good quality of food and service . We come here often and you can try other options like deep fried wings and chicken. A hidden gem .

I ordered the Split Any 2 box with Hainan Chicken Box (GF) + chicken rice. The broth was yummy. The sauces were Ginger Scallion Sauce and Thai Ginger Soy. The Thai Soy was delicious with the rice! Great meal, fast service in the food court, and I would order it again.

I like how they have samples of every flavor to try in the store -- the staff was very kind. My favorites were the extra spicy and szechuan peppercorn. They come in a decently sized portion, I was expecting this to be more of a snack but I actually got a bit full before I could finish the bowl. I liked the crunchy, bouncy texture of the chicken feet -- the flavors are spicy, slightly acidic, and them being cold makes for a refreshing snack. Duck tongue was also tasty but the flavors were pretty similar to the chicken feet though with bones inside, so I'll skip next time. Underrated is their drinks! I tried both the lime jasmine tea and lemonade and they were very refreshing. They also have a combo where you can get 1 order of chicken feet and 1 drink for $20, which is still a bit pricey but worth the splurge every once in a while. The shop is a bit small with limited seating, so I recommend to-go and enjoying it at home instead.

Just a quick update…read more We had just finished climbing Mission Peak and we were in need of boba and sustenance. So EAT Up in 99 Ranch is always a great option. The only thing is parking is always quite challenging and even more so on a weekend and Wushiland doing a grand opening. Luckily we caught someone leaving as we pulled into one of the rows. Inside, Shihlin has a kiosk and you basically order there or online if you're heading over and don't want to wait. To be honest it didn't take super long to get our food. I had ordered the Treasure Rice Box this time round and well I clearly don't know how to read as I thought it said you can cut the chicken in half or keep it whole. It was actually cut in half or fully cut. *shakes head* So I would've gotten it fully cut for easier eating but the half cut wasn't bad an option as it did keep the meat more warm so I was able to save half for my other half. The mild spicy was a bit more like medium in my opinion and I did less seasoning and it felt like normal. So if you're sensitive to spiciness, I would not get any spiciness on it cause mild was kind of still pretty intense. The one thing they did up their game with is the bag! The bag is stinking cute. Too bad I spilled my boba in it. Ugh Otherwise I would've totally reused it. Anyways, I'm still happy this is here and a mainstay.

The flavor is still on point, no complaints there. But the portion size... that's a different story. The XXL thigh used to actually feel XXL. Now it's noticeably smaller -- honestly, about half of what it used to be -- while the price has stayed pretty much the same. That's not a small change, and it's hard not to feel a little cheated when a "popular item" suddenly shrinks this much. I get that costs everywhere have gone up in the Bay Area, but cutting portions this drastically without adjusting the name or the price feels unfair to customers who've been loyal from the start. The food is still tasty, but the value just isn't what it used to be.

Stopped in for a quick bite before heading up to the city to catch a Warriors game, and there were a handful of people dining in. Given it was an early dinner, the two of us shared a #1 which consisted of 2 sliders and fries, and we tacked on an additional side of Mac and cheese to try it out. Chicken was meaty, not too dry, and well-seasoned without overdoing it. The Mac was also pretty good, and the fries were also seasoned, but nothing too special. I ordered the double pepper chicken leg burger, and the chicken itself is the star: crispy on the outside, juicy inside, and deeply savory. While I personally wished it packed more heat, the execution was spot‑on. The bun, however, felt a bit forgettable, and the sauce leaned heavily into Thousand Island territory...fine, but not particularly distinctive. All that said, it's better than the crowd suggests. I had their Chicken sandwich. It was one which did not have a "spice" warning logo... but underneath the deliciously crispy batter, there was a very noticeable spice (my tolerable spice level is hot Cheetos, and this was slightly spicier than that). Beyond the spice, the chicken itself was spectacularly cooked. The interior was quaint. They had two large posters with a few tv's one playing Ted Talks without sound. They also had a prayer area which i thought was nice and well maintained. The bathroom: A single person restroom tucked in the back of the storage hallway. (The same hallway the staff uses to go to the back of the kitchen). It is decently clean with a larger sink and a toilet that even has a bidet. Above the door, there is a sprayer nozzle that is a bit worrisome since anyone who enters the restroom walks directly underneath this. The kitchen had an obnoxiously loud mechanical squeaking noise... not sure what it was but we just tried to ignore it (which was very difficult to do). The order: The Big G (Chicken Sandwich) -Had a large, thick, and very juicy fried chicken. The batter is knurled with a great crunch! Even though it had some heat, it was delicious!!! If you want more heat, there are options on the menu. This could easily be the best chicken sandwiches I have had in the area... if it weren't spicy. Comes with a side, and I chose seasoned fries (the seasoning turns out to be very spicy). Combo 1 -This combo comes with 2pc bone in chicken and a side. This chicken comes with the same deliciously crunchy batter as the Big G, and it too has a spice level I was not expecting. As for the side, this time I went with regular fries, and it helped tremendously to cool down my mouth from all the hot spices/seasonings going on. Definitely worth a try if you can handle and enjoy hot Cheetos. But if you can't, then I recommend skipping this one. But the delicious chicken batter might be worth the spice pain.
