My friend and I are on a mission to eat at all the dumpling places in the downtown area and see which ones are the best tasting. We tried finding Baoz the first time but couldnt find it but it's underneath the waste management tower. Print out the map on the website for more guidance. The service here wasn't as quick as Star Chef or Doozos and we were first in line so that was a bit disappointing. We ordered 12 pan fried (vegetable & chicken) and 12 steamed (chicken & pork) with spicy sauce and shared. I do prefer Doozo's sauce over Baoz. But when it comes to the skin, I prefer Baoz because it's not as thick as Star Chef or Doozos. I felt like it didnt fill me up as quickly with all the carbs like the others which was a good thing. I did however get pretty burpy throughout the day :( Something about the dumplings did not make my stomach happy. We were not fans of the vegetable dumplings so I would avoid them unless youre a vegetarian and have no choice. read more

So this place is located in the tunnels by the Waste Management Building and I have to go slightly out of my way to get it but I think it's worth it. This place makes pot stickers rather than dumplings in my opinion but we're not going to get technical on what they're called. What I like best about this place is that they make pan fried dumplings. I usually get the combo with 12 pan fried chicken and pork dumplings. You have to pay an additional 25 cents for pan fried but I think it tastes alot better than the steamed. With the combo you can get an egg roll and drink or egg roll and soup. The eggroll wasn't that great so I recommend just sticking to the dumplings. read more

Even if I didn't work above the tunnels, I would come drive downtown, park, and go into the tunnels to get these dumplings. They're that good. Since getting 18 dumplings only costs $1 more than getting 6, go ahead and treat yourself. Spicy pork is amazing but they're all consistently delicious. The only issue with this place is that the lunch special comes with 2 sides - but the egg roll is the only decent one. If I could add a Coke or another egg roll instead of a cheese wonton (meh) or a sesame ball (don't do it), then this place would be an easy 5 stars. The service is very quick - but be warned that ordering your dumplings pan-fried adds a few minutes to the wait. The "lunch combo" is 18 dumplings and two sides (egg roll, fried won ton, small soup, sesame ball, or small drink). When pan-fried it comes out to $8 even. I am a fan of Boaz Dumplings which is conveniently located in the Downtown Houston Tunnel. The pan fried pork dumplings w/ spicy soy sauce is a must try! There are two types of people in this world: people who prefer Baoz and people who prefer Doozo. Nothing you say or do will change people's minds. I think Baoz completely trumps Doozo, although I still go to Doozo from time to time. The lunch special will fill you up for right under $9 (tax included) for 12 pieces of pan fried dumplings and two sides. For only $1.25 more, you can get 18 more pieces of dumplings. You can either get the dumplings steamed or pan-fried, and there's vegetarian options. I personally prefer the pan-fried pork dumplings. Note that the dumplings here are much smaller than Doozo's. The outer dumpling "wrapper" is also much thinner (less-doughy) compared to Doozo's, which you will either love or hate. Personally, I like it more as it has a closer resemblance to authentic Chinese dumplings. I'm a big fan of the hot and sour soup here, but most people I know don't really like the one here. One thing I dislike about Baoz is the side options aside from the soups; no I do not want a measly sesame ball or egg roll when I can get a whole tub of fruit from Doozo. it's time to step it up! I work downtown and we take turns going and getting these from the tunnel system below. They are really quick in preparing the drinks, even when at times we are ordering 10 at a time. So I am new to Houston and the tunnels. Apparently in Houston, everyone lives in the underground tunnels. So imagine my surprise how many places there are in the tunnels. So, searching Yelp, I found this little gem of a food place called Bao-Z. I'm usually not a huge fan of dumplings, but imagine my surprise on how fantastic this place is. I've had dumplings before, like gyoza's, but nothing like this. I LOVE the spicy sauce they give you with the dumplings -- its good and tasty -- let it get inside the dumpling and its FTW! So, what I can say is this: Get the special (18 dumplings plus eggroll and soda) and add the soup. You will have food left over from lunch for that afternoon snack you want. This was my second visit to Baoz and now I'm a little confused. On my first visit, I had the steamed pork dumplings and they were quite good--good texture, good flavor, all around good though not outstanding. On this visit, I was taking advantage of the fact that they're now posting calorie information for some items, so I had the steamed chicken dumplings. Pretty much the same dumpling, but pork is almost always going to be better than chicken. I also added a veggie eggroll which was an excellent decision because it was outstanding. Next time I might just get four of those! Here's where the confusion comes in. I also ordered the Hot and Sour soup which I have to say was just plain terrible and cost them a star. As any downtown dumpling fiend knows there's a battle for dumpling supremacy between Baoz and Doozo, so here are my thoughts on that: I like the flavor of the dumplings--it might actually be more about the sauce--a tiny bit better at Doozo, but Doozo's dumpling can be soggy at times. If the wonton soup proves to be a winner then I may give Baoz that fourth star back and become a devoted customer. It's also nice that they have calorie content posted. read more

I go to Baoz about once a week during my lunchbreaks. They have great dumplings with a great dipping sauce. I always get "extra spicy" sauce which is the spicy sauce plus a side of pepper sauce that comes separately. Hot and sour soup is pretty decent too especially if you add some of the pepper sauce. I don't really recommend paying extra for pan fried since it looks like they just take the regular dumplings and throw it on the pan for a little bit but they're not bad either. Love this place! Wish they'd let you get a drink for a side like before, but water is probably best for me anyways... read more

Not the best dumplings in Houston for sure but not a terrible lunch option for us downtown employees. The dumplings I am almost sure are frozen dumplings that have been reheated. This doesn't bother me too much as I didn't have high expectations. 8 dumplings with a side of egg drop soup and a sesame ball is a good portion to leave me content. 12 dumplings if I'm feeling extra hungry. I love this place for when I am in DT. The guy is fast but at the same time I find him somewhat friendly. Nothing like that lady from Doozo's. I always get the lunch special- get the 18 piece dumplings with this you also get two sides. It's about $8-10? This is usually two meals for me. I always get the pork dumplings pan fried. I believe it's less than a dollar to pan fry and it's just fantastic. They're the classic dumpling style (not like the doughy type from Doozo's that people love so much) I also really like the spicy soy saucey dip. Nice and garlicy to dip my delicious dumplings in. It's not like these dumplings are unlike any place I've been, it's just such a great deal and quality for eating downtown. If you really want some dumplings, go to Chinatown. It's much cheaper or go to an asian grocery and buy some bags of dumplings- tastes virtually the same. read more

For carry-out dumplings, Baoz makes a nice change of pace from Doozo in Houston Center. Their dumplings are more like traditional restaurant dumplings-- pleated crescents with a very thin, delicate wrapper-- and you can order them steamed or pan-fried (for an extra 25 cents). Be prepared to wait a few minutes for the fried ones as they are fried to order, and they are hot, fresh, and greasy! They are a little more expensive than Doozo because the individual dumplings are smaller so you wind up buying larger orders, but all my friends say Baoz dumplings are definitely better. I only eat the veggie dumplings and I like both Baoz and Doozo equally well, but they are very different. Baoz veggie dumplings contain a mix of tofu, carrots, bean thread noodles, and greens and they are very tasty. read more

So today my co-workers and I found ourselves wondering around the First City Tower before we realized that we were in a restricted area and on the wrong floor. This place is in the Tower but it's in the underground area, we had never been there. I had the lunch special with 18 fried pork dumplings, egg roll, egg drop soup and drink for $9.50, don't think that's too bad. My order was ready within a few minutes and I start cracking into the containers. -soup was first. It was steaming hot and I doubt it was ever cool throughout the entire meal. It taste Ok but nothing great. -egg roll was next. I took a couple bites but was very unimpressed. -The real reason why I'm here, the dumplings. The taste was good but could've been better. The dough was fried on one side as usual but it was still as tender as the other side. I like a crispy/ sorta chewy fried side. -The Sauce! Oh, the sauce! Slightly sweet, semi-vinegary, spicy goodness was the saving grace. Wow, really good! Overall, I probably won't be making any special trips to go here again but i'd definitely drop by if I was in the area. read more

Ok. I was really close to rating Baoz Dumpling with a single star, but I'm feeling generous today. Plus, the visit I'm commenting on was only my second or third one and for something to be really bad, I would have to be disgusted by everything on the menu. I haven't tried everything on the menu and I hope I never have to. I don't understand the raves about this place...at all. The skin on my chicken pan-fried order was so thin that half of my order included broken-in-half/mangled dumplings.I'm not sure if most dumpling places prepare previously frozen and shipped dumplings from a box, but perhaps this could have something to do with the consistency of the dumpling itself. The spicy sauce will have your breath reeking because it is over-seasoned/ over-processed with god-knows-what kind of preservatives. The dumplings were palatable, but I was truly famished. Below average pan fried dumplings. For just under $9.00, you can get 18 pan fried dumplings (aka. potstickers). The good part -- they filled me up. Unfortunately, the dumplings are clearly the same low qualify frozen dumplings that one can pick up for $3 a bag at an Asian grocery store. The cover was a thin dough that was clearly machine pressed together. And the ground pork inside was blah. The dumplings were not pan fried properly either. The bottom was not crusty like a good potsticker should be. Disappointed. The saving grace was that the dumplings are acceptable enough for me to eat them all. But will I go back? Nope.
