Absolutely the best new barbecue on the northside, maybe anywhere in Houston. Can't wait to see the new Texas Monthly BBQ ratings coming out in a week. In addition to everything being perfect about their food, their service, their little house and their smoke shack, here's why they're at the top of my list: a week ago we took some visitors from New York for their first ever authentic Texas barbecue. On the way down the back steps to the (beautifully shaded) outdoor picnic tables, I tripped and $40 worth of BBQ, sides, and fixings went in the dirt. My guests were already starting to eat so I went back in, snuck up to the cash register and explained I'd like to cut the line and get the exact same order as I'd just received. They quickly assembled it, while keeping up with all the folks who'd waited in line, handed it to me and just kept working. I handed the young lady my credit card but she just shook her head and smiled, went back to checking out the paying customers. Ive lived a half mile from here for a couple years now and i have just discovered Bar A BBQ. The food is incredible! I got the Texan Trio and loved the ribs the most. My wife got the two plate and two sides with chicken and brisket, i ate almost all of her chicken, its the best BBQ chicken hands down that i have ever had. If for no other reason than to get the chicken i will absolutely be back. Everything was very good. This is my second favorite BBQ i have had in Texas, right behind Corkscrew. Also, the line was long when i went, but it moved pretty fast, i had my food and got back out the door in 15 minutes, and the line was out the door. They were fast, efficient and kind. Im excited to stop by next Friday and try the pork belly burnt ends, i hope they are as good as everything else i tried. read more

Montgomery TX is more then just a small town, it's a town destined for greatness and prosperity. Our visit to Bar A BBQ has been on my mind since their food truck days and with the constant quality they share on the gram, it has constantly enticed me for a taste of what they have to offer. We arrived right before opening time and ordered the two meal plates with fatty brisket, pork ribs, turkey, and pulled pork. Side choices were their cheesy tater casserole, brisket dirty rice, mac & cheese, and the cucumber salad, also ordered all the desserts. We dug straight into the food and started with the casserole, man exactly what i've been picturing. Similar to au gratin potatoes, the flavors were rich and creamy with a flavor packed bite that kept us wanting more! I was worried the potatoes wouldn't be tender enough, but they in fact were! Onto the mac & cheese, super creamy and flavorful, notes of cream of mushroom and chicken with perfectly cooked pasta. Personally the cheese level was perfect, I dislike an overly cheesy mac, this was a solid mac! The brisket dirty rice was a meal of it's own, with pieces of chopped running throughout the rice, it was the perfection side dish to accompany a plate of bbq, my wife's favorite in fact! My only note was that I wish it was more moist the rice itself, it lacked the proper texture for my liking. The cucumber salad was a breath of fresh air, alleviating the palate and readying yourself for the next bite. The perfect dish to mellow out the heaviness of barbecue. Pulled Pork was a solid pulled pork, just like any where! I did enjoy the barky texture and simplicity, if needed the bbq sauce was a beautiful addition giving savory and sweetness notes, mustard based for those against mustard! The turkey breast was almost not ordered until I convinced my wife that we needed to try it since turkey is different everywhere but at times all similar. This was spot on turkey breast that was moist and tender with the slightest bite, and was seasoned perfectly yet simply. A slice of this with the casserole was my favorite bite! And man, the pork ribs were something I had been yearning for. The glaze was phenomenal and the tenderness was perfect leaving the perfect bite. Simply perfection The fatty brisket was of course perfect as well, text book brisket with an amazing fat render and texture. The seasoning level was perfect and blended well with all the sides, I personally ate it with the fresh sliced jalapeños for a bit of heat. The half chicken was glazed with an awesome glaze that I wish I could have a side of just to dip the meats in, quite literally the perfect seasoned chicken. It's a must try when visiting! And to finish, the desserts were all great! The tallow chocolate chip oatmeal cookie was immensely soft and oatey which was such a pleasant twist, similar to a chick fil a cookie for reference! The banana pudding had no bananas thankfully but did have the flavor of banana, with a light pudding and a ginger snap cookie crumble that tied in perfectly! And lastly, my favorite dessert, the chocolate chip corn bread pudding! Served warm, the concept is a winner and provides an equally balanced experience. I've been a big fan of Bar A BBQ for a while now. We visited them several times when they were just a trailer at Meadow to Market. Once they moved to their current location on Eva Street in the heart of Montgomery, I've probably been a half dozen times. Caleb is usually behind the counter & always greets you with a smile. Occasionally, I've had Shelby plating. No matter who, it's always been with a friendly smile. The menu is pretty self explanatory, it's on a big blackboard where you order. And if they're out of something, they usually have it posted on the butcher paper. Proteins: they carry the staples in BBQ. Brisket, sausage, pork ribs, turkey, maybe even yardbird (chicken). I'm a brisket fanatic and don't deviate from that. The moist brisket, chefs kiss ! I alternate between the Beefy Texan and the Jalapeño Cheese sausage. Both are good. Side: cheesy taters, Cowboy beans, brisket dirty rice, Mac and cheese, maybe green beans? The Cowboy Beans are good. They're garnished with onions on top, so if you're not an onion fan, be sure to sin cebollas when ordering. Being a big dirty rice fan, I was pumped when they added their brisket dirty rice to the menu. It's a hit for me. I love the stuff! Cheesy taters are delicious. Can't vouch for the green beans as I'm not a green bean guy. The only thing that might be better than the food & the people is the music they play. Not many places will you hear the Turnpike Troubadours followed by Shane Smith & The Saints. It's not a "cheap" meal & the menu isn't extensive, but it's quality food done right. While the menu might not have all the choices you see at other places, the Bar A folks turn out really quality food, done right. I don't think you'll regret it. read more

I didn't want to have to write this, but Cooper made it personal. I attended the all-day experience at Bar-A ($500, 3:30am-7pm), which was supposed to cover everything--from proteins to sides. The class started with Alec, the pitmaster, who was knowledgeable and friendly as he walked us through the meats. However, around 4:30pm, Alec informed us he was done for the day and that we wouldn't be seeing how the sausages or sides were prepared due to a large catering event. Everyone in the class expressed disappointment but ultimately left. I later reached out to Cooper via email to give feedback, given what happened. His only response was, "Didn't y'all leave before 7pm?" When we clarified that Alec had told us he was finished and that we wouldn't be learning the rest, Cooper's reply was outright dismissive--essentially calling us liars. He claimed Alec had only said his day was done, not ours. So either Alec misled us, or Cooper is outright lying to us. Regardless, this is no way to treat paying customers, especially for a $500 experience. The back-and-forth emails made it clear that Cooper didn't care--he had already gotten his money. Regardless of what their response to this is, I have all the emails to back it up. [Update] Figured the owner would respond with more lies. Everyone in class (including myself) was in great spirits the whole time. My emails have been nothing but respectful as well. Cooper, I'm sorry it turned out this way as well. read more

Why 5 stars? Because things are in even better and the brick & mortar! --- --- --- We visited Bar A BBQ several months earlier when it was merely a food truck. We enjoyed our experience, but definitely knew that the restaurant itself was going to have more potential. When we visited the truck, it was really cold outside, so we opted to drive home and eat it. While it was still great, the restaurant experience was obviously on a different level. The difference in temperature from our food truck visit to our restaurant visit could not have been more on the opposite end of the spectrum. Probably the only downside to the restaurant is that the A/C was not working well, which resulted in a lot of indoor sweating. But you know what? It was worth every bead. We arrived around noon on a Saturday and probably waited a solid 45 minutes to an hour in line. Just a warning for anyone planning a trip here: come early or be prepared to wait! Word has gotten out that Bar A serves some amazing food! We ordered everything on the menu other than chicken and sausage. 5-stars: -Brisket, Ribs, Cheesy Taters and Honey Butter Cornbread The meat stands on its own. It was such a nice bonus to get a slice of brisket while we were waiting for in line. It looked and tasted like it was oozing with butter. The ribs are among the best I've had in the Houston area. But a very important thing to acknowledge is that the cornbread might have to be a part of my last meal list if I ever find myself on death row. DO NOT come here without ordering the cornbread! The 4-stars: -Turkey, Cowboy Pinto Beans, Green Bean Casserole and Banana Pudding I am just not a huge turkey fan in general, but this was about as great as turkey could be. We visited this place on Friday at noon, the restaurant was modern, open, and very clean. These folks take pride in their location, cleanliness, their staff is on top of helping you to your table with your food tray and even asked if you need assistance on getting your drink from the fountain area. Brisket dissolved in your mouth, flavor profile was amazing, perfect smoke balanced by the salt and pepper. The sliced turkey was out of this world yummy, I'd go back and feast on a bit more. Sausage was excellent dipped in their bbq sausage. The pork ribs were out of this world, I resisted eating the bone, jk. Overall I give this a five. Finally got a chance to try this spot! Drive past here A LOT on my 105 commutes & had it bookmarked for months. Came here with a buddy for lunch on a Friday afternoon. The cheesy tater casserole was something I never had before, took a chance and glad I did. Very soft and well seasoned with a light crunch from the tater tots. The rice was perfectly seasoned with a light spice. The sides set the tone for the meal without a doubt. On to the more important part, the meat! Brisket was incredibly tender. I asked for a fattier cut which practically melted in my mouth. Good, balanced seasoning. The sausage was good too. Not too greasy or dry and well cooked. I tried my buddy's cheddar sausage & it was missing the "pop" in flavor that mine had. We were both more impressed with the cheddar jalapeño sausage. My only gripe: I'm a BBQ sauce guy, especially when it comes to brisket. I wasn't a fan of their house BBQ sauce. It was a strong mustard-base sauce. It could use improvement IMO. First trip to Bar A BBQ and am glad I finally stopped by. There was 7 of us after Saturday morning grandkid basketball games. We ordered Brisket, both types of sausage, pork belly, and Chicken along with sides of Brisket Dirty Rice, Macaroni and Cheese, and Tater Tot casserole. I rate my BBQ visits on the brisket and sides typically. This moist brisket was basically perfect. Perfect "moistness" without being too fatty. Great flavor without sauce. The mac and cheese and dirty rice sides were outstanding. The Tot casserole was a little bland, so we won't get that one next time. The pork belly was a special and it was excellent both with and without sauce. Crispy on the outside, and luscious in the middle. I skipped the sausage, but the family said it was excellent. The chicken was addictively good. They also slid in some sort of dessert for free. Tasted like a cornbread bread pudding. Just the right amount of sweetness. Really Really good. The serving line was a little slow, but that might be expected during the Saturday lunch rush. Good amount of seating in the restaurant and plenty of picnic tables out back where we sat. Great BBQ, within 20 minutes of the house, so we will be back the next time we get the smoked meat itch!! read more

So this barbecue location in Montgomery TX is supposed to be one of the best in the state of Texas.... BUT a particular establishment it's clearly gone to their head, especially where the price point is.. we went in for the first time after being recommended by multiple people I laugh with maybe 2 pounds of meat )in mixed quantities) with a few sides, and Kid you not my bill was over $160. This is not a joke. The food wasn't that good. The coleslaw had very little taste to it no horseradish kick to it very bland. The sausage was fine. The ribs were. I would say OK not let you knock your socks off great.. so other people don't know what good barbecue is whether they're fooled by the awards they might've gotten a few years ago, but I do not recommend this location or this establishment. Save your money.! Super disappointed and I will never be back again nor will I ever refer anyone to go there.
