Enjoyed a nice meal here on the cool air conditioned inside recently (the patio is beautiful otherwise and I'd highly recommend). Lots of interesting items on the menu and it is hard to choose. Started with some chips and dip and guac. We split the cheesy cauliflower, the octopus with chimichurri potato's, and crispy Brussel sprouts with bacon. The latter was probably my favorite. We aren't that hungry so this was plenty of food for me. Washed it all down with a cocktail special Black Forest and a special cocktail of the evening that was a little too syrup-e for me. Overall food was pretty good but I might not have ordered that well for my personal tastes. Cauliflower was very oile and super cheesy, although kind of good in a sickening way if that makes any sense ? It's good but you might not want to eat too much. Let's start with the food. Food came out promptly. Food was also warm. Some of the tacos/tapas that were ordered -Brisket&Mac&Cheese: Eh!!! Nobody at the table liked it to us, the pair just didn't go together and 5 people had it. -Baja: It wasn't bad but the Cole slaw could of been wet or they could have added more sauce on the taco itself -Shrimp: it was decent. The chips, queso, and salsa were absolutely delicious and a great starter. The Mexican Street Corn was also suprisingly really really good and flavorful, and was also a nice appetizer. The tacos itself carried too much flavor and I was not the biggest fan of the buffalo cauliflower with ranch. This places is not huge. They have a bar at the front and the dining room in the back. We sat in the dining room. We started with margs - one house and one skinny. They were good margs! Pretty strong. We got an order of the skillet baked queso with the additional guac on the side. The queso was delicious! We got the beef and potato empanadas and the barbacoa quesadilla to split. I'm giving this place a 4/5 mostly for service. Our server wasn't very friendly, and didn't come back until we flagged him down so we could order more tapas. Other than that, the location and most of the food we got was so good, I'm still thinking about it a week later! We had the goat cheese fritters, Mexican street corn, albondigas, shrimp a la Catalan, mussels, and a lamb barbacoa taco. We also ordered several drinks (we had to get our servers attention every time because he didn't check in on us) and a bottle of wine. Bar.bacoa is one of my top tier tapas restaurants in Atlanta! I tell my friends who are visiting from out of town about it all the time! Every time I've been there and tried something new it's been amazing. From the tacos to the pozole to the larger plates to the drinks to the deserts every single thing on their menu is well prepared, well priced, and absolutely delicious. They're located right in the hustle and bustle of Virginia Higlands and have a free valet parking lot behind the restaurant (be careful, it's easy to miss!). It's always busy when we go, so I would absolutely recommend making a reservation. I've done this every time my husband and I go and we've never had to wait! On the pricier side, but it really depends on what you get to eat. It only takes me about two tapas to fill up, so that could be relatively cheap in my case, but not for the ravenously hungry. I love the empanadas, all of the vegetarian dips and the scallops. More to try, but I end up craving those when I go there! The drinks are pretty basic prices, not too expensive or too cheap. We thought this place was OK. Bar-Bacoa (technically, stylized as Bar.bacoa) opened in January 2019. It's the current tapas restaurant to occupy the space long filled by Noche and later, Tom Tom and Taco Cowboy, in the heart of Virginia-Highland. Along with tapas, this place also serves tacos and has a small, but happening bar. If you ever came to this spot in any of its previous incarnations, the look and feel is generally the same; the difference is in the details. Free parking is available behind the restaurant in a lot shared with other businesses in the same corner strip (enter/exit via North Highland Ave NE). I parked on the street (also free, on Virginia Ave NE) which is what I normally do when visiting most parts of Virginia-Highland. You can park on the residential offshoots (e.g. Vance, Maryland) too. We visited on a Friday night at 7:30pm with reservations booked via OpenTable. Book your reservations for free using OpenTable and earn dining points that can be used towards future discounts at other OpenTable restaurants or redeemed for an Amazon gift card. The restaurant was busy, but not completely full, the entire time we were there (probably at 80% average capacity). This restaurant has a casual, laid back atmosphere. They've got their bar up front, dining room in the middle, and patio seating out back. The patio, which overlooks the parking lot, is shared with neighboring restaurants, La Tavola and Fontaine's Oyster House. Overall, the place isn't very big. It can get loud and feel crowded. If there's just two of you and you choose to dine inside, you may be seated at one of the two-tops along the banquette, close to other pairs/couples which can potentially make things a little awkward/uncomfortable. I like the patio and chose to dine there like I have for La Tavola and Fontaine's. The patio is covered and has both ceiling fans and heaters so it doesn't matter what the weather is like. When we came for dinner, the menu featured six soups and salads combined (priced at $6-9 each), 15 tacos (most $4-5 each; the lobster taco was $8), and 33 tapas or small plates (most $6-16 each). This place has a Mexican slant to it, obviously with the tacos, but in several of the tapas as well. Here's what the two of us tried (five tapas and one dessert, no tacos): * Barbacoa Sope ($7) - thick housemade tortilla, black bean puree, barbacoa, queso fresco, pickled red onions, radish, cilantro-lime crema, micro cilantro * Lemongrass Mussels ($12) - lemongrass broth, chorizo, garlic toast * Carne Asada ($10) - char-grilled skirt steak, Cholula-fried onions, balsamic reduction * Seared Scallops ($16) - sweet corn puree, cilantro pesto, crispy serrano ham * Octopus ($14) - seared octopus, Mexican white bean salad, cascabel chili-cream sauce * Tres Leches Cake ($6) The dishes ran the gamut from great to terrible. I hate to use the word terrible, but the lemongrass mussels were so bad, we sent them back. Despite the varying tastes, all of the dishes were presented beautifully. Many were vibrant and colorful. If only some of them tasted as good as they looked. First, the great: Seared Scallops and Tres Leches Cake. Three nicely-seared scallops were served on the scallop plate with two thin, delicate, and extra crispy slices of serrano ham separating them. The scallops were fresh and luscious, flavorful, each piece with a nice bit of char. The sweet corn puree helped to complete the dish. It consisted of black beans too so it made the dish more filling. The tres leches cake was excellent. I highly recommend it. Nice and spongy; sweet, smooth, and creamy. Very moist. It's one of the best tres leches cakes I've had in recent memory. Second, the good: Barbacoa Sope and Carne Asada. The barbacoa sope was the best-looking dish of the bunch. I like how they neatly arranged the radish slices. The barbacoa was well-marinated and full of flavor. Good stuff. The tortilla was thick and appetizing. We ordered the carne asada medium rare and the meat came out just right. The skirt was succulent and relatively juicy. I liked the crispy fried onions which provided a welcome contrasting texture. Third, the disappointing: Octopus. We love octopus, but this octopus was simply too rubbery and chewy. By nature, octopus already has this sort of texture, but it was either something about this particular octopus or the way that it was cooked to cause it come out very tough. That and there wasn't a whole lot of it. There was a lot of beans though, but all we wanted was some good octopus. Finally, the terrible: Lemongrass Mussels. I was looking forward to this dish because I really like mussels in a delicious broth. The broth was indeed delicious, but the mussels were poor quality. They tasted bad. Bad as in they were repugnant and should've have been served. Definitely a bad or "expired" batch. We rarely send back dishes, but had to on this one. Our server was Alvaro and he did a fine job. Let me just start with the MARGARITAS here. I have never had such a phenomenal margarita experience. They are so good, and after one margarita, you know you're feeling good while you're feeling good. A quote from another diner (brought up completely separately without me even asking): "I was so happy after that margarita here last time I came." It's a phenomenal margarita experience, would come just for that. However, the food is also really good. The guac is tasty and the chips are very good, however would say that the chips break a lot trying to scoop the guac, not sure if it's a chip structural integrity issue or the guac being too chunky. Tacos are delicious. Trailer park taco is always good, and I never get tired of it. Peruvian chicken taco is good if you like cucumbers, pretty cucumber heavy. Beef barbacoa recommended by other diners, another diner enjoyed that his beer glass was frosted on the outside. Service is good, they are friendly. My husband and o went here for a date night. First time coming to this restaurant which I found solely through Yelp. We love tapas so we were really looking forward to it. They have so much varied that you'll have to visit several times to try everything you want. We got the following... 1. Skirt steak salad - delicious well cooked steak and fantastic dressing. I've been to Bar-Bacoa twice now, both times on Taco Tuesday, and I highly recommend it to anyone who wants some good Mexican food in Atlanta. It was so good the first time that we returned the following week with friends from out of town. Of note: these are slightly larger (just slightly) than authentic street tacos, so if you normally get 4 of those from a street vendor, you might want to try 3 here to start. The tacos come out fairly quickly too, so you can always order more! I've tried every taco they have that doesn't contain seafood, and I vouch for them all (my wife tried several seafood ones and says they're amazing). My favorite, but a mile and a half, is the carnitas!!! I know that the name of the restaurant is Bar-Bacoa, and while the barbacoa is pretty good, it can't hold a candle to the carnitas, it's honestly in the top 5 tacos I've ever tried (and I've had a LOT of tacos). Other highlights include the brisket taco that comes with mac and cheese, the chicken tinga, which is pretty authentic-tasting, and the trailer park, which contains a chicken strip, but is amazing. For appetizers, the guacamole is good, but not noticeably different from that at other restaurants with good guac, and the queso is also pretty good, but again, I wouldn't put it in the same category as their tacos. The house margarita is $7, which isn't bad, and it's pretty strong, but again just slightly above average, not out of this world. I tried the ugly habanero margarita as well and it was nice and spicy. My wife has had the sangria and it's pretty good (I stole a sip). For dessert, I've had the tres leches and it was also good. I give this place a 9.3 out of 10, 5 stars flat, and highly recommend you check it out, just don't spread the word about taco Tuesday or it'll go out of style ;) read more

I've had good experiences ordering takeout. Most recently I enjoyed the atmosphere while dining in. I called ahead to check the necessity for a reservation and was able to walk in with minimal waiting! The tacos are so yummy! I got the salmon and shrimp tacos. The margaritas are great too. Great drink specials throughout the week with happy hour. The outside patio is really nice and shared with the spaces next door, but it doesn't feel overly crowded. Service could be a bit better/come around more often, but a friend said sitting at the bar they had the great service while they are dinner. I asked the waiter (same person who seated me) about drink recommendations and he didn't seem too knowledgeable about the menu... I chose a margarita and it was ok, I definitely expected a stronger kick considering tequila is in the sign under the name. I really enjoyed the barbacoa nachos. My friend ordered chips and guac, and his chips were really really greasy...unlike my chips in the nachos, so that was interesting. I also had the trailer park taco. I'd pass on the tacos next time. It wasn't bad, but it also isn't something to pay for. My friend didn't enjoy his grilled steak taco either. If I'm in the area, I would consider going back for the nachos. The ambiance was nice, but the place is pretty small and my experience didn't live up to my expectations. read more
