Went for dinner with two friends. Had great drinks (dirty vodka martinis, chardonnay) at the bar then on to our reserved table for dinner...comfortable seating, soft lighting. We each started with a different salad: Mediterranean, baby kale/beet, and Caesar. And escargot for the table. Yum! There was plenty to share. The Entrees: I had the Moroccan Spiced Shrimp --- absolutely delicious -- would order again & again. Large plump shrimp on mound of couscous, all spiced perfectly. The friends had the Coq au vin and the grilled chicken pita wrap. Absolutely no one was disappointed with their entree. The Coq au vin was a particular standout, as was my Moroccan Shrimp. No desserts this time around. Service was attentive, but certainly no one was hovering or rushing us. A great all-around dining experience. Thank you Bar 6! read more

I ordered a Bailey on the rocks and got tons of ice and a little skim of Baileys. The bartender was holding the bottle, so I thought surely he's opening a new bottle, and this isn't a joke. Hands down, one of the most authentically enjoyable dining experiences I've had in a long time with a girlfriend, especially at such an underrated gem. This neighborhood French bistro was lively with music, chatter, sights, and smells. It felt like the perfect place to be at 7pm on a Friday night. Though everything about the decor spoke classic French bistro, the food had an incredible Morocco, exotic flare. To start, the Sweet and Spicy Cauliflower immediately put our tastebuds to work, as we reached back for seconds and thirds until the plate was empty. The Moroccan Spiced Meatballs is a must-try; the earthy tomato sauce and the slight hint of lemon does complements the tenderly cooked meatballs perfectly. The Mussels Provencale was fresh and tangy; they gave us so much we could barely finish. For entrees, we went for the highly recommended Chicken Tagine. It is a massive serving of bone-in chicken breast and wing powdered in spices and served with couscous with raisins, sliced almonds, and herbs. Every bite felt like a little piece of heaven. Bar Six is hardly an accurate descriptor of the picturesque French restaurant with a North African flair. Not only can you find classic French staples here, you can try new flavors that will make you reminisce about them for days to come. read more

THIS is what a French cafe ought to be. This is contrast to the faux French cafes that show up all over the place catering to American tourist ideas of Paris. Note I said this is what a French cafe "ought to be". This place is better than many French cafes in France. * * * Let's ignore the nuance that 1/3 of the menu and 1/3 of the staff is Moroccan. Franco-Moroccan cafes exist. Many are quite fine. This place would work magnificently even if there was not a single Moroccan dish on the menu. * * * First of all, Bar 6 nails the ambiance and the comfort factor. This is a beautiful calming room. The elements are familiar to people used to traditional English pubs or old-style French cafes. Low warm lights. Old wood everywhere. Mirrors on all walls with writing on the mirrors so that light becomes reflected but the pictures of your neighbors are not reflected. The mirrors make for a diffuse light and few shadows. It takes very little illumination to make the room seem cheerful. I relaxed immediately on entry and stayed relaxed the whole time. * * * I ordered off the Moroccan side with a triple merguez sausage in a pita wrap with caramelized onions and red peppers. Pure comfort food. Caramelized onions go well with warm cozy rooms. They also go well with merguez and red peppers. My wife had a plain salmon with vegetables. She was not in love with her salmon but she was in love with her vegetables. The bar is good. (I would ignore the bar-whining from some of the other Yelpers.) They do a house specialty cocktail of a heavily botanical gin, prosecco and lime. A girly drink to be sure. The drink is NOT mixed evenly - by design. It is prosecco on the top and gin on the bottom. The drink improves dramatically as you get more and more gin. But the prosecco keeps everything mellow. I would order this one again any time. * * * As is often the case in New York, this was a dinner before rushing off to a concert. So we could not linger. The room just begged for lingering, mellowness, a long dessert, and an even longer after-dinner drink. But that was not meant to be. If I lived in the West Village though, I would make this a regular hangout. read more

This place has seen much better days. It's sad to see it become so disappointing. They should call it "Bar Sux" instead of "Bar Six". 24 years ago, on New Year's Eve, my wife and I met and wound up at a crowded Bar Six at 1 am where we had great drinks and lots of fun. Bar Six has been an integral part of our "how did you guys meet" story ever since. We decided to revisit Bar Six this past New Years Eve. We made reservations a month in advance for around 10 pm and had one of our adult children with us so she could see where the magic happened. When we arrived, we were told that due to a "scheduling conflict" one of the cooks had to leave early and we would need to put our food orders in right away but could stay as long as we liked. At 10 pm on NYE we didn't have much choice for an alternative so we rolled with it. We were seated in the back of the restaurant, where a few other parties were already finishing their meals. Our waitress was lovely and attentive. She took our order right away and confirmed that we could stay as late as we liked and there would be champagne/Prosecco at midnight. I asked if we needed to pre-order dessert too and she said "no" because only the "sautée cook" had the conflict. Our food came out promptly. The skate was just passable and the tangine chicken with couscous was tasteless and I left most of it uneaten. Shortly into our meal (1030 ish) the waitress sheepishly returned to say that the kitchen was indeed closing and we'd now need to order dessert. We couldn't help but feel extremely rushed and uncomfortable. We ordered the crème brûlée which was quite good. By 11 pm we were now done with our meal and we closed out our bill for a cool $300. Our daughter headed off to a nearby bar to meet friends. The manager then handed out NYE hats, noise makers and sunglasses. Despite the dinner fiasco, we were hopeful that the last hour of 2023 would be festive. Unfortunately, things would continue to go downhill. At about 1115, we took our drinks to a table near the bar which wasn't crowded. At 1130 I watched the manager go outside and lock up the gates in front of the bar. When he came in, he closed the wooden blinds in the front glass windows. We had the feeling they were closing, but it was only 1130! It appeared that, except for the two of us and another table of four, the only people in the bar (and literally sitting at the bar drinking) was the staff (including our waitress) and their significant others. We had the feeling that we were uninvited guests at a very low key private staff party. A few minutes before midnight, as promised, Prosecco was passed out and without too much fanfare, the clock struck 12. At 1210, my wife went to the bar to order a shot of tequila. The bartender, who I can only politely describe as surly, refused to serve her and advised that they stopped serving drinks at 11. A bar on NYE was no longer serving drinks an hour before the new year? What's going on? At that point, my wife tried to appeal to the bartender's sentiment and asked if she could tell him why we were there. He said "you can tell me any story you want but you aren't getting a drink". She told him the story about how we had been there 24 years before and he simply said, "the bar is closed." My wife told the manager and he directed the bartender to give her a shot. We would leave minutes later with a strong feeling of being unwelcome. If the restaurant and bar were going to close at 11 on NYE, that would have been important information to convey when the reservation was made. It's unfortunate that a bar/restaurant that has been around as long as Bar Six can lose its charm and be unwelcoming to its customers. It's way past it's prime and there are many other better options. read more

No one came up to me "multiple times". The person who responded to my review wasn't even there at the time. Neither the person to my left nor my right left because they "felt uncomfortable". They were both great. One went to work and one replied to me that they have more than once been asked to keep it down if it made me feel any better, but whatever helps you sleep at night. Who do you think told me the manager was also Colombian? One of the people you claim left. Deny it all you want. Lie all you want. My experience was my experience. Latinos are clearly not welcome. I stumbled across this place to grab a drink at, nice patio area but very small tables, and since all the patio tables were taken, I settled for the bar. I ordered a martini and it was an okay martini, definitely not the best I've ever had. I didn't order any food on that occasion. I found myself again in the area and starting to get hangry around lunch time so I wandered back into this place since my experience a couple days prior was okay. They must have been understaffed because the server that came to take care of us looked and acted angry, overwhelmed, and flat out rude w/ her facial expressions (rolling her eyes, acting "smartassy" w/ us), as if we were supposed to be taking care of her (not to mention she looked as if she'd just rolled out of bed). Some people should not be in the service industry. It really didn't seem very busy in the restaurant so it really blew my mind that she seemed so stressed. We ordered everything when she came back w/ our waters: Caesar salad, hummus plate, side of fries, French onion soup, fried zucchini chips, and a bottle of rose. We saw her taking other tables drinks that had gotten there way after we did, and then lastly bringing out bottle of rose over. About 30 minutes after waiting for very simple items, someone else brought them to our table. Fries were cold, soup was warm but not piping as French onion should be, which led me to the assumption that our food had been sitting there for a while. None of the food we had ordered was anything to brag about, and the service was horrible. Late evening my friend got sick, since this was the only thing he had eaten, it was definitely from here. And it was the mayonnaise based sauce that came w/ the fried zucchini chips. Make a note, if something tastes funny, most likely it is - so don't eat it!! He was hungry so he ate it unfortunately, leaving him in the bed that night and the whole next day. Total bummer when your visiting a place. If you find yourself in the area and are thinking about stopping in, I would wander down the street to a better option where you'll actually feel wanted & won't have to worry about food poisoning. As long as I can remember Bar Six has been around in an otherwise changing West Village. Looks wise, Bar Six has a French Bistro atmosphere and the food with both French/Moroccan influences. The food is standard, a little higher priced but that's likely in part due to the neighborhood. An old faithful pick for both brunch, lunch and dinner. There are a couple small tables outside that are coveted in the nice weather. read more

Probably the worst restaurant service I've ever experienced. Two family members and I walked in on Sunday, May 7, 2023 at 3 pm for lunch. The host just looked at us with a blank expression. I said "three for lunch." Although the place was 90% empty tables, he asked: "Do you have reservation?" I said "no" and he then mumbled something to himself and just disappeared. The bartender then came out from behind the bar, ignored us, and he disappeared. We stood there, alone, for about five minutes and waited, but one came over to seat us. We left and went to another restaurant around the corner. I don't know how this place stays in business. read more

Ordered the meatballs to split with a friend. We were hoping there would be 4 meatballs instead of the normal 3 that come in an appetizer. We weren't in the mood to fight each other to the death over who would get the third meatball. Little did we know that we would be getting five whole meatballs. We put our machetes away and picked up a knife to split the fifth meatball. Sometimes it's good to put your thinking caps on and use your brain. A cosy, comfy, altogether delightful Village restaurant, with excellent food that goes down easily and great drinks...no surprises here, but should not be missed by anyone in the Village area. (At lunch time, it gets a Wrinkle Room crowd and many older ladies, so come after 2 p.m.) It doubled as a French restaurant in the Meryl Streep comedy, "Julie and Julia," and has interior of a French bistro. read more

Came into this bar with friends and sat down next to someone who, after a few minutes, starting explaining that her ex-BF stole her credit card and she couldn't pay for the glass of wine she ordered. My friend generously offered to buy her drink, an act of kindness, but also to probably avoid a scene in the bar and because the bartender seemed to not want to deal with the situation. Honesty, it could have been someone having a bad day, or someone running a scam, but let's just say the woman was not Anna Delvey. Before we paid the bill, including the stranger's $14 glass of wine, the manager/owner came over and blamed us for offering to pay for stranger's glass of wine. He described the well-dressed woman as "clearly homeless," which was not the case, and you gotta wonder why they served her if it was obvious to him based on her appearance. He also said we put the bar in a difficult position by offer to pay her bill. I paid for the stranger's glass of wine, and close to a 20% tip. read more

This bar is a neighborhood gem! Romantic dimly lit vibe. Not only are the drinks amazing but the food is incredible. I ordered the Morrccan spiced shrimp. It was incredible. The tomato couscous it came with was cooked perfectly. The dish transported me back to my visit to Morocco a few years ago. I heartily recommend Bar Six despite a rocky start. When my friend and I first came in through the narrow entrance, it wasn't clear where the host stand was, and so we did the awkward shuffle of craning around to see who we were supposed to talk to. Anyway, the host seemed to think we were in the way, grabbed some menus, and marched us over into a beautiful dining room in the back, barely saying hello before dashing off. I was a bit miffed, though I couldn't tell if I was legitimately miffed, entitled, or just hangry. Maybe all of the above. The food was aces, though. The summer special of cucumber mint yogurt soup was refreshing, with bits of the cucumber rind, though I found myself adding a ton of salt and pepper (and I'm not one to go overboard with the salting). It did get more one-note the more I ate it - I think it was missing some acidity or twang like lemon or red chili flakes. Our waitress was kind enough to supply a loaf of house bread to go with the soup. Bread was a bit stale, which was mooted by me ripping the loaf up into chunks and dropping them into the soup. Yes, I was definitely hangry. I then got the chilled artichoke with garlic aioli, tiny pickles, and olives. Not quite sure what I was thinking because artichokes take some patience and discipline to eat, and I could have eaten a bear with my hands at that point. I've never had an artichoke before but the presence of a whole one on the menu intrigued me. In the words of the immortal Elle Woods, I'm not afraid of a challenge. And it was quite good! It proved to me why spinach and artichoke dip is such a delicious concoction. The artichoke heart was the best. Alas, I was still hungry. So I ate three-quarters of the banana bisteeya dessert. A normal bisteeya is some kind of magical, Moroccan phyllo pastry pie stuffed with meats. A banana bisteeya is that on steroids, with flambeed bananas inside and a hunk of vanilla ice cream melting into these beautiful rivulets down the canyons of the pastry. Mash them all together and you have the best dessert I've eaten in months. Seriously, how was that so good? I'm still thinking about it. My chili-basil margarita was very tiny. It was definitely meant to be savored over the course of a meal but I downed the drink in three gulps. 1 drink, 1 soup, 1 artichoke, 1 chicken bisteeya, 1 banana bisteeya came out to about $70 before tip. read more

I can not comprehend the negative reviews that I am seeing for Bar Six. My family and I have been loyal customers of Bar Six for more than 20 years and we have never once had an unpleasant experience. John, Matt, and George, the hosts, always greet us with a warm smile, and are attentive to the needs of every customer. The portions will never leave you hungry, and the bar prepares a variety of specialty and classic cocktails; the beer selection is also impressive. Short story: I was in France last summer and perhaps I was unlucky or I did not know the right spots in both Paris and Nice, but I was constantly disappointed by the Salad Niçoise. To this day, Bar Six serves the best Salad Niçose I have ever had. Such is only one example of their amazing French/Moroccan cuisine. read more

I have happily been eating at Bar Six since they opened many years ago. My meal last night was abysmal, as were those of my companions. My Salade Nicoise had three under-cooked hard-boiled egg halves. Tomatoes that looked and tasted like styrofoam, two brown anchovies, a handful of overcooked green beans, and three little pieces of tuna. There was no dressing, nor was ny offered. The pommes frites were limp and cold. My friend's tagine ( I think it was califlower, thought we found very little of anything but rice iand tomato sauce in it) tasted like it had been left in a crock pot for a few days. Anther friend had a Ceasar Salad could have been ordered from a salad chain. Totally unacceptable for a restaurant of this reputation and these prices. First time here last night, for a long awaited meet-up with an old friend for a couple of pre-dinner drinks. We arrived around 4:30 when it was still nearly empty, stayed for about an hour or less. Two of us each ordered 2 rounds of vodka Martinis (Tito's, straight up with olives). The drinks were well mixed and tasted quite good, though the glasses were a bit on the small-medium size. When the bill came after a total of four drinks, it was $82.75 before tip. Is this normal now, in mid 2022, for cocktails in downtown Manhattan? Nineteen dollars plus tax per drink seems rather high. Ouch! Otherwise, the atmosphere was very nice and the people were friendly. read more

Well, I'm glad I finally had a reason to search out a casual, affordable eatery My wife had the burger, which was oustanding, while I went for the Chicken Tagine, slow cooked in moroccan spices and served over couscous. It was rich and savory, a quality tagine if I ever had one. Plenty of great wines and beers to be had as well. Last but not least, it's a pretty, warm, and romantic refuge from the onslaught of uber-modern upstart restaurants--a comfortable and classy bistro that doesn't rip you off, the kind you rarely see anymore in Manhattan. read more

I have been a long standing customer of Bar Six and find all of the staff to be extremely friendly, accommodating, and professional. Some of my favorite items on the menu include: the turkey burger, the steak au poivre, and the risotto. I was saddened to read a recent negative review which was not accurate. As a witness to the situation, I feel compelled to set the record straight. The woman who claims she was singled out because of race was intoxicated and extremely loud. I did converse with her and she seemed genuinely happy though it was clear she had been drinking for awhile. I'm not sure how long she had been there prior to my arrival, but in the hour that I was dining, she consumed about 4 drinks. At times she was talking to another person at the bar who was seated two seats away and was absolutely shouting to be heard. Two diners asked the manager to be re-seated from the front to the dining area because of her loud nature and he accommodated their request, (and because they had moved, she thought there was no one being disturbed by her noise). It was at this point, the manager asked her to please keep her voice down. It's unfortunate that this situation transpired but patrons disturbing others dining experience should not post negative reviews to justify their unacceptable behavior nor pull the race card to excuse it. Perhaps instead, gracefully accept that you did indeed have too much to drink and be grateful that you were not cut off and asked to leave. Kudos to the GM that night who handled this situation professionally with limited disturbance to the rest of the diners. I remain a loyal regular to the restaurant and its amazing staff. read more

Love this place and so glad indoor seating has opened back up. Perfect place for a happy hour drink and snack. They upped their cocktail game in the last couple of years a lot. This is one of the first places I went to in NYC when I first came here in 2000 to take summer intensive design courses at Parsons. Now I come here after being a guest critic or working on exhibition designs at Parsons, at least pre-pandemic, anyway. Glad you guys made it through. Here's to many more years of Bar Six! read more

I met a friend here for dinner on a Thursday night and boy, am I glad I made a reservation because every table was packed! This place is poppin'. The host was friendly, but wasn't at the front of the restaurant, and it took me a few minutes to find him, which irked me. We were seated at a loungey table, and it took a while to order, so I think we pissed off the waitress because she gave us a TAD bit of an attitude. Understandable though... We started off with a dozen oysters, each of which is $3. A bit overpriced, especially since they're the smallest oysters I've ever seen! I got the mushroom risotto, which was very good, but so heavy and creamy, too much in fact. I felt like molasses afterwards. I'd suggest they ease up on this dish (or maybe I'm a weakling and couldn't handle it?! Idunno). My friend got an appetizer, the Mediterranean salad as her main, which looked and tasted good, but, again, was super overpriced. The bill came out to $90, which was not worth what we got. I'm pretty sure that the oysters, appetizer, and entree could have been found elsewhere for better quality and half the price. Meh, not impressed, wouldn't return. read more

What a great little bar near the 14th Street PATH station! I love how cozy it is in here and how the host let us sit at a table for drinks even though he knew we were on our way to dinner. Blacks or minorities are not welcomed here, my boyfriend and I asked for a table but were refused seating by the host. We were told that they were completely booked for the evening, although there were more than 4 tables ready and avail. All I have to say is that it's so shameful and completely uncalled for to stereotype people soley by the color of their skin. We would of spent over $300.00+ wining and dining but thanks for your restaurants disgraceful treatment we'll take our black and Latino dollars else Where. read more

Bar Six had such a cozy, warm and romantic atmosphere. It was comfortable and one can go there dressed very casually, but it is still a nice restaurant. There are candles on all of the tables and cushioned seats and also wooden chairs. I ordered the chicken and replaced the mashed potatoes with the truffled fries. For desert we shared a crême brûlée, which was so delicious, and I can definitely recommend both things that I ordered. The portion size was larger than I had expected. The waitress was attentive but not overbearing. The food was really good but you can find "really good" food everywhere in NYC. This place isn't going to blow you away like a trendy new sushi place in Chelsea would. However I'm giving them five stars because the warm atmosphere (plus the fact that the food was delicious) made this place such an enjoyable dining experience for us. read more

First time here. I was not happy at all with their Fried Calamari. Very chewy and thin, no flavor; but was very grateful for the owner. I was not charged for it, I mean I only tasted one. Literally. It's cute. I stopped in here for a drink on super bowl Sunday while waiting for a friend to arrive from jersey. It's the only real bar in the area, however it's more of dimly lit date spot. I was looking for a tv which I did not find but also, just a cold beer which I did find. The place is cozy and inviting. I believe the cuisine is French but as I stated I only came in to have one drink while I waited. I would come back here again if in the area for a drink based on the atmosphere alone, but also I'd like to try the food someday. read more
