I was invited here for lunch, and I never go to French bistros. Usually I love hamburger maisons, and if I go to a bistro I almost always opt for it. But my friend was drinking wine, and I'm weird...I NEVER drink wine with a burger. But I did have some lovely sauvignon blanc and the best salad I have EVER had. I tried the beet and watercress salad, which comes with goat cheese and walnuts. Oh heavenly. My friend had the artichoke with garlic aioli and I didn't try it but it looked fabulous. She also let me dip my frites (which were VERY good) in the sauce. Now I know why Les Belgiques dip their frites in mayonnaise. I don't like mayo on its own. But I def like aioli. Nom nom nom. Just came back from another extraordinary brunch at this lovely restaurant. John the manager was so wonderful made us feel right at home, it was my friend Nina's birthday and he and his staff made her birthday super special. Ben our waiter and his team were amazing, service was top notch and the food was so delicious. we all had the mussels, salad and their grilled asparagus. Came in for dinner with a classmate before class and had a wonderful time. I would have liked for the menu to have more salad choices since many of the entrées seemed heavy. In the end, I ordered the soup du jour (cream of mushroom) and the charcuterie platter. The soup was just okay; it was warm-hot, but I would have preferred it HOT. The charcuterie platter was excellent--filled to the brim with proscuitto, pepperoni, 4 different types of cheese, apricots, fig, etc. At the end of dinner when our waiter brought us the check, we got into a conversation about adding brie and pâté to the platter. You can't beat the location and the ambiance of this West Village gem. Just a stone's throw from the subway (L/F/M), Bar Six offers an intangible feeling of comfort and belonging. Maybe it's not unlike the characters in the fictional "Cheers" bar felt, taking their places on well-worn stools. The atmosphere is warm, intimate and energetic at the same time, due in part to the classic bar setup and wooden stools. Food: 4 stars Service: 1 (maybe even 0) I have been here before for brunch. I thought the menu was amazing and everything was great. My family came into the city recently and wanted to try some place that had a great menu and great service- being a previous customer I thought Bar Six would be the perfect place to take them. I have worked in the hospitality business before. I know what it's like as a bartender as well as a waiter. We are all human and it's normal to have a bad day or be in a "I don't want to be here mood" however for the sake of receiving a good tip or the very least not being complained about- you suck it up and provide the best service possible. Our waiter was rude, not timely at all and overall bad. When we arrived, we sat down at the table, my fiancé went to the restroom and our waiter came over to get the drink order. We asked for a minute (understandable). Within the minute of my fiancé coming back to the table, the waiter came back over for drinks, again we asked for just 2 minutes so that we can get settled and look at the drink menu. He did not return for another 10 minutes (okay- again, I get it. This could have been a misunderstanding of him getting caught up with other tables, I get it, it happens. It felt like the whole time our table was being avoided as well. He would scarcely come over to check on us. When we were ordering dessert, my dad asked the waiter what flavor ice creams were available. The waiter listed all the flavors but as he said caramel, chocolate - it sounded like he said "caramel chocolate" not "caramel or chocolate". So, my dad looked at the waiter and said "caramel chocolate? Do you have just regular chocolate?" The waiter looked at him and said in a condescending tone "Is that a real question?" Rude, unnecessary, and ridiculous is how I would describe this interaction. Not to mention, my dad is hard of hearing, he legitimately did not hear what was being said. Then the dessert took about 15-20 minutes when it seemed like something that would be easy to come out. We asked the waiter how much longer it would be and he said, again condescendingly, "it's a dessert, it takes a while" as if we asked him some ridiculous, obvious question that we should know the answer to. Getting the check was something we had to chase him down for as well. Plates and glasses were left on the table for extended periods of time while we had bussers and the waiter pass by us multiple times. It's really unfortunate, we live two blocks from Bar Six, we love the food but there is no excuse for this type of service. We will probably not return. read more

Soothing atmosphere and nice staff. Tasty drinks... not so tasty food. However, they have good vegetarian options, which my boyfriend seemed to enjoy. Not a bad place for a work type of lunch. The food is decent, service good. I had the veggie cous cous and cappucino both of which were adequate. The big advantage here is that it is spacious and so you may not need to wait too long. But I went for an early lunch and I suspect it may fill up quickly. The response from Bar Six is inaccurate and untrue. They never offered to remove the charge. In fact, they were adamant about not doing so.The check was split in half with our friends who did not apologize for my unhappiness. In fact, they agreed wholeheartedly with me. Additionally, saying that I did not tell my server about my allergy is a lie. I told her and was quite specific. It's ok for you not to like my review but to lie about the circumstances is unacceptable. And please let me add now that the service was abominable. We had to ask for everything and our waitress didn't come by even once during our stay to refill water, ask if all was ok, etc. I noticed that this was a comment made by many in their reviews! More than ever now I would never visit here again and encourage others to do the same. Obviously they can't accept criticism which is a shame and no way to run a restaurant. read more

Ordered lunch from this restaurant once. Interesting menu with great variety. The skate fish was very flavorful and pasta (penne Provençal) was well prepared too. Food in general is tasty and healthy. Also ordered the fresh berries with cream. It's great that they offer this healthy option for dessert. I met a friend here for drinks. We did not try any of the food. It is a cute atmosphere and our server was very friendly. We sat at a table in the bar area. When the weather is nice you can even sit outside. It wasn't too loud so we could actually hear each other. Very cute downtown bistro. We had the zucchini chips (average), ricotta dip with mint (very good) and crab and avocado appetizers (also average). I got the turkey burger with truffle fries- the fries were really good. Service was great. One thing I would suggest is to change the wine glasses- they remind me of cheap cafeteria glasses. n my opinion, yes, the 'glass' makes a difference. Try it for yourself. Five stars for Bar Six! Bottom line: Flavorful, really filling food; boozy drinks; cozy feel; great for groups / large parties; also great for dates; friendly service. Whole story: Less than a week before my birthday (1/26), I decided it was time to start calling restaurants for dinner reservations. I'd talked about having a dinner for a month, and 12 friends said they were coming. Eeep! Most places I called wouldn't take a reservation, were booked, or their kitchen couldn't handle such a large party. I started to panic. Luckily, I found Bar Six -- they answered the phone, they could take the reservation, and they would even split us in half (on the check) to make paying easier at the end. The next day, I decided to come by for happy hour, since I hadn't ever been inside. I was greeted my a dimly lit, quiet, neighborhood-bar feeling place. There were lots of dates going on all around, too. The bartender, Felipe, was super sweet, and when I mentioned I was checking out the place for my birthday, he promptly asked the manager over for an introduction. That night I had three of their drink Le Cornichon, which finished off the infused gin for the night. Oops. Three nights later, I came back for my birthday dinner. I got a call one hour before the reservation, making sure I was still coming. The table was set up and everyone was ready to go! Our server was constant and quick. The drinks were flowing. The food was great -- the party ordered meatballs, hangar steak, salmon, chicken tagine, and shrimp (me!). Everyone said they were happy with their food, just that there was too much of it! For dessert there was a chocolate cake that I didn't try, because there was a banana bisteeya with a candle and my name all over it! The pastry, the caramel sauce, and the ice cream with the warm banana were heavenly. I'm looking forward to coming back again soon to try more off the menu -- like I said, the cocktails and the food are flavorful, the service is friendly and the atmosphere is cozy. The food is horrific. I was very annoyed that I made 19 dollars for a piece of DRY, BLAND chicken. And the sides were cold...My friend got the salmon and it was also DRY AND BLAND...and her side dish was cold as well. The service is atrocious. The hostess needs to remove the rod from her ass before leaving her home each day. I was never treated so rudely. The drinks took 20 minutes to come...and the waiter did not understand how to split a bill on 2 cards....So he told us to write down what we ordered and which card to put it....So we did that....and he still screwed up...He was very rude about it...In general the staff appears that they do not wanna be bothered. Not friendly whatsoever. The atmosphere is nice....nice to sit at the bar...but do not eat here. read more

I'm gonna have to jump in here and totally ignore the moroccan/french influence (even though I had the Chicken Tagine last night) and say this place has one of the best damn burgers around. Loose ground chuck.. Gruyere cheese (whose spelling I just mangled).. crisp lettuce, cold tomato all on a hard crust roll. Good god damn, it's tasty. Smack that down with the George Debeouf Bougelais (another spelling I've massacred) and you've got the makings of an epic meal. Throw in an attractive little lady, late evening, in one of the corner booths and you've got the makings of an epic night. read more

Don't ever sit at those tables in the middle. I swear, when somebody walks by, you can feel it in your bones! I would have been distracted from that had the food been remarkable. But no. I had a burger with Gruyere. I was excited about the cheese since Gruyere is one of my favorites and I've never been to a place that gives you a choice past cheddar and swiss. But the fries were the best part of that dish, along with the tomato they put on the side. We don't get a lot of really red tomatoes in Queens. I did have a very tasty Riesling, and they get one star more for that. However, I was going to get a cocktail but then I saw they were $11, and I'm not quite ready to go back to paying those prices after paying $5 for excellent martinis in Arizona. Give me a few months..... Service and ambiance were excellent, but a tad bit too loud for my taste. Man, am I glad we found you....There was an extremely handsome bartender who kept the IPAs a-coming, and I think I fell in love with him. Bar Six has a really chill vibe, but that also might be a laid back Sunday night thing. No one was visibly annoyed as my friends played sex, marry or murder for an hour over drinks. We were pretty loud. I cried more than once from laughing. Every time the "hot bartender" was one of the options, I'd always pick marry....no matter what. Went here with a friend to grab a bite to eat on a chilly Wednesday night. This is a neighborhood joint, so it was quite crowded when we arrived around 8. Thankfully, we were able to be seated at the only empty table. To start off, I decided to go with the kale salad--sometimes these types of dishes can be very generic--but this one was actually very good. For my main meal, I decided to go with the chicken tagine--which was delicious! This dish is also massive, so be sure to bring your appetite or split with someone. The chicken was super moist and tender and the rest of the flavors came together perfectly. For dessert, we decided to split orders of the creme brûlée and spiced pear crumble. Both were decent, but I would have to say that I enjoyed the creme brûlée a little bit more. Overall, this place has such a great ambiance to it and the service is friendly and attentive. The food is also high quality and very reasonably priced. Definitely a place worth checking out if you are in the neighborhood. read more

So I was with my fiancée and a friend and we were looking for a nice place to have dinner and my fiancée pulls this up on yelp. I have to say this place really let me down. I ended up having the croque madam with an order of fries. What I got was a mushy, soggy sandwich and fries that were so greasy that I didn't even eat them. Let me explain something...I NEVER turn down french fries! They were that bad. I forget what the rest of the table had. They did not have as bad of an experience as I did but weren't ranting and raving about it either. In addition to the quality of the food, the service was horrible. I hate it when the waiter basically ignores you after delivering your food. Not only could I not get ahold of our waiter but when I asked for another drink, but when I finally did order another drink I never got it. I won't be returning to this establishment for dinner, but I would like to try the brunch. Maybe that will be better. read more

I ended up here for a late bunch on a Blackboard Eats coupon and I'm sooo happy I didn't pay full price. The food was actually pretty good. I ate way too many awesome french fries. And the atmosphere was adorable and unpretentious. The service, however, really soured the experience. When there was an issue with an order the server came over with a super combative "what's the problem here?" tone. Given the "problem" was her fault, I didn't appreciate the attitude. Luckily, her shift was over. Sadly, she didn't think to pass us off to another and we had to wait with empty glasses. It was just really unprofessional all the way around.
