Thirteen years calls for an update, no? Sometimes I forget that this cocktail paradise lies on the very edge of the French Quarter. Admittedly, I have other regular stops these days, not for a lack of love or anything, these things happen. But Bar Tonique is a forever favorite, a worthwhile stop before a concert at the Saenger. The best place to stop, along with the Black Penny, on Rampart if you want a good cocktail. We stopped in on a hot Sunday late afternoon. What a refuge! The bar had plenty of seats, and the people in there were a nice mix of locals and cool tourists that don't want to spend their drinking day on Bourbon Street. Drinks are so fairly priced. In a time when cocktails are upwards of 20 bucks even in NOLA, it's nice to see theirs cost considerably less and they have a solid HH with $8 cocktails (rotating specials). Not BS beer and a shot or well drinks, but actual expertly-mixed drinks. And frozen Ramos Gin Fizzes if that's your thing (not mine but I get it). read more

We first came here as part of a ghost n cocktail tour stop, but we were so impressed that we returned the very next day. Thank you, Jon, for introducing us to this gem. At first glance, the place may look like a dive, but it has a great neighborhood bar vibe, excellent cocktails, and very affordable prices. Bar Tonique on a Wednesday pre Mardi Gras is a pressure cooker with a liquor license. Outside, Bourbon Street was already bourbon strewn and feral. Inside, Tonique was the eye of the storm, dim, tight, buzzing with locals, drunks, vagrants drifting through, and a gaggle of business bros with no concept of anything outside their tiny echo chamber. Desmond was holding it down like an air traffic controller with a lighter and a grudge. Speed, snark, and skill balanced like a pro. I watched him build five classics at a time, clean and fast, no mixology cosplay, no wasted motion. Trinidad Sours landing with that bitter, spicy swagger, and green chartreuse laden libations that tasted like monks invented joy and then hid it in a fucking bottle. That's the magic here. Dive bar soul, serious cocktail execution, and a bartender who can run triage without breaking the spell. Drink here, tip heavy, then step back out into the bacchanal. The streets can have the chaos. Yummy cocktails. Seriously the best drinks we had the week we were there. They usually have a drink special daily but most cocktails are $10-12 which is awesome price for New Orleans. Its a small space. Maybe seats 30 folks and mostly bar seating. Mostly everyone wants to sit at the bar because here they have mixologist. It's a pleasure to watch them craft your cocktail and these are cocktails not drinks. You can only drink probably one or two and you're probably going to move on so seats rotate frequently. I can't believe the incredible happy hour prices at Bar Tonique! A Sazerac for $6?? What a steal. My friend said the Sazerac here was the best one she had during our trip. I ordered the Pimm's cup ($6 since it was Monday's special), but I personally didn't like it (a bit too citrusy and I was surprised it didn't come with mint). There is also a water cooler where you can get cold or hot water. There's some seating around the bar, a table outside, as well as a few booths inside. There's also 2 single stall restrooms by gender (the women's restroom sink had some questionable goo on the faucet...). Be ware of this dirty little bar! Went here with 13 people after a long ghost tour and this happens to be the last bar our tour guy took us too. Order about 5 drinks at a table . Gave the waitress name Bianca our bill to pay. I waited over 20 mins and went over to the bar to see what's was taking so long while some other from the group was taking shots . She gave my card to one of the guys that were with us. Why? I don't know. He told us the bill was paid for and that he tipped her $50 from a tab of $63. I asked for the receipt and turns out she never closed me out at the table. So I had to pay for it . The guys told me they paid cash for tip already so do not add on receipt . Turns out after I paid for the tab and went home I see a charge of 71.20 . Be aware of paying with your card here!! We ended up paying over 100 in tip because she charged us 18 also on the card and we had paid that cash. read more

Bar Tonique is a cool dive bar that makes great cocktails at very reasonable prices. Gayle, David, and I came here to meet a local family friend, who was giving up alcohol for lent. We had a great time anyway! The highlight of our Bar Tonique experience as their Ramos Gin Fiz, which took 20 minutes to make and set us back a very reasonable $14. The tasty concoction felt more like drinking a gin milkshake - smooth and satisfying. As they were out of Pisco, I opted for a very nice US made Belgian beer, as I'm currently tired of anything IPA. David's a Sazerac man and he was very happy with his drink. Bar Tonique itself is a bit dark and small. There's seating at the bar, up towards the front, and within a small side room. The guy at the bar was friendly and very competent in his mixology. Our conversations with Micah were fun and educational as he was born and raised here. And when the effort is made and the ingredients are prime, it is a delight! So popular in its heyday, legions of young men, dubbed "shaker boys", were hired to shake the beverage to the required froth, passing the shakers to fresh arms when theirs grew weary, so great was the demand! What does it taste like? Well: ever had Smarties candies, in those little rolls? Like that, but with a fresh fruit tang and the aroma of flowers, and a soft fizzy pillowy texture. It hits several senses at once, it's not just a flavor. The foam should stand an inch above the rim or more, pastel in color The smell of citrus and orange blossom on the nose, and botanicals with the first fizzy, tangy sip. It's no secret that I am a cocktail enthusiast. I have mad respect for bartenders and skilled mixologist. That said, Bar Tonique has been on my radar because it is renowned for its exquisite cocktails. On the outside you'd never guess that this would be a spot where you could imbibe in an expertly crafted cocktail. All syrups and tinctures are made in house and juices are freshly squeezed. The place is small & cozy with bricked lined walls, high ceilings, & wood accents. The central bar encourages patrons to converse with one another. The cocktail menu is impressive and extensive and is separated into categories to help you narrow your selection. The prices are also very reasonable. Larry was behind the bar on the day of my visit and he had a great personality - very friendly and likeable. After browsing the menu, I selected the Jack Rose - a forgotten classic. I was impressed that Larry didn't have to look it up and immediately started putting the ingredients in the shaker. I took a sip and it was a perfectly balanced sour. Alright, Larry knows his stuff. A few minutes later, a couple came in and said they heard this was the place to get the best Ramos Gin Fizz. A classic cocktail that was created in New Orleans and needs to be shaken for 15 - 20 minutes (dry shake first) to achieve the perfect frothy, thick head. Larry informed them that it would take a bit and suggested they order a drink while they waited. I was excited that they requested this because I wanted to see one properly made. Larry engaged us with conversation all while shaking and making drinks for other customers. Finally, it was time to unveil his creation - a perfectly executed Ramos Gin Fizz. We were all impressed. Larry is legit! My first experience at Bar Tonique exceeded my expectations, and I will be back every time I am in town. They also have great Happy Hour and daily specials. read more

Came across this dope bar one late night in New Orleans and it did not disappoint. Very chill and low key with great drinks. Here are my takeaways: Environment Located right on the outskirts of the quarters, very low key and intimate. At night it's very chill and dim with good energy and a relaxed ambiance. It has a divy vibe - right when you walk in you'll see plenty of bar seating with with a few tables around the space. They also have pretty decent amount of outside seating right on the sidewalk. This seems like a place that you can easily become a regular at. Service The service was great. They had one bartender managing the full bar and she was doing a great job getting drinks out in a timely fashion. It was easy to order and get what you need. Drinks The cocktails were great and strong! For the quality and the price you can't beat it (especially compared to what I'm used to here in DC). On the outskirts of the French Quarter is this jewel of a bar. We ordered 2 Ramos Gin Fizzes and the bartender politely informed us it would take about 20 minutes. He paid very close attention to detail, checking his watch (for shaking time) making the Gin Fizzes while deftly handling the other bar patrons. He also placed the drinks into a freezer for a bit which was his twist on the process. The strategy is to order another drink first, and the Ramos Gin Fizz as the second drink. I rolled in here late Sunday night, a bartender recommended I come here if I wanted "good cocktails." So glad she did, because the chick behind the bar Cathy DID NOT DISAPPOINT. When I first walked in, it is dimly lit and a small bar, there were a good amount of people but it wasn't packed and everybody who was there seemed to be regulars or know the bartender. I sat at the bar and the bartender did a trick with the napkin and right there is when I already knew I was in for a treat lol. She handed me a menu, but I really couldn't decide on a drink. She told me to tell her adjectives on what I like... I literally said the word "floral" and she said "say no more". I told her "you didn't even ask me what spirit I like" and she replied "trust me, and if you don't like it, then I'll make you something else." So I trusted her...and boy did she make me the most amazing mixed cocktail ever. It was perfect, I ended up ordering two. We need more mixologist like Cathy in this world, that just "gets it." Making a good cocktail can be hard to do, but understanding peoples preferences on tasting notes and then whipping something up to your liking is an art! Go have a drink here, trust me...and I hope you get Cathy because watching her do her thing is fun, you can tell she loves what she does and it truly makes a difference when your drinks are made with love.
