Four stars for atmosphere and wonderful staff. Any special request got a "sure". I, a designer, marveled at the simple elegance of the entirety. If I was to own a bar, Toto is what I'd use as a model. Drinks were good, food was good enough but on the food Toto reminded me. Too many restaurants try to be fancy or eclectic with their menu when they would do us all a service by focusing on what they do well. Toto is a wonderful bar in a city with a million great restaurants. Give us good bar food, that's all I ask. Special Mussels Marinara were quite simply the best I've ever had. Very spicy, but not too spicy. In fact, just spicy enough and nice little mussels. I wish I'd ordered more. read more

I love their fries! I've enjoyed everything I've tried there, but the fries are fantastic (if you're into a smaller crispier cut). The house tomato flavored mayo is delicious with them. Service can be a bit slow when they get slammed, but overall I've enjoyed my couple visits there. read more

Went there because it was recommended by someone who had a celebratory dinner there and told us that is was also the mayor's favorite restaurant. Well, I guess they have very low standards because my husband and I were so disappointed! Food was cold, service was awful! We came in and ordered Italian. They dropped the food and never brought bread. We had to try desperately to get out waiter's attention and then had to wait until we were almost done with our meal to get the terrible bread with one pad of butter. To add insult to injury, they actually charged us a dollar to our bill for the bread. We were hoping to get coffee and desert and before WE COULD ASK, not offered if we wanted any, they brought the bill to our table. We are good tippers but I no longer reward this kind of service. read more

I really enjoyed this charming little place. Came here for a late dinner last Sunday and the food was great. I ordered the prosciutto panini and my sister got the American panini burger. Both dishes were delicious and satisfying and the fries were great. While the food deserves 4 stars, I'm only giving this place 3 stars because the service was really slow. The place wasn't even close to being full and it took forever to get our check then our waitress disappeared and I had to give our money to a different waiter. Also, the prices were about $4 higher than listed on their website to keep that in mind. But overall, very good place and I will be back. read more

The restaurant looks nice, the food is ok. The cubano is quite good, the fries are great. In the summer every table is practically on the patio with the all of the windows open. Why does this only get two stars? The staff and the seating. The waitstaff is rarely friendly, and often pretentious. It has gotten better since I first went there three years ago, but not enough to make me want to go more than once every 6 months. Worst brunch in a looooong time. The service was horrible. I used to be a server, know how hard it can be and that sometimes you just have an off day. Our server was downright rude to us. It really seemed like we were bothering her just by being there, by ordering, by politely asking for more coffee and drink refills. My friend's burger was overcooked and came with the wrong kind of cheese but he never got that opportunity to complain because the server NEVER came back to our table. Rarely have I ever experienced service like this. Absolutely, positively the WORST service I have ever had in New York, if not anywhere. Plus, when I asked another server to speak with the manager, he or she was conveniently not available at the time. On top of that, the food was just OK. Bland, greasy, just OK. This makes me sad because when I lived in this hood 5 years ago, this was a regular hang and a reliably good place to eat. It has definitely gone downhill. I won't be going back. read more

Love it! I went twice for brunch, twice on the lovely outside tables, and I'd recommend it! I really liked their egg specialties - the smoked salmon & goat cheese frittata is yummy! Lunch. Arrived Friday afternoon 12:30. Waited half an hour for a drink, hour and 15 minutes for the food. My friend then had 10 minutes to scarf down her meal as she had to leave to pick up her daughter. The waiter was very apologetic -- he explained that the other server was late because of a doctor appointment and he was on his own. It wasn't his fault. The management should have figured it out. God knows what was going on in the kitchen to cause the delay. The squash and fennel soup was too sweet. The crab cakes were pretty good but burned on the outside -- probably because we told them we needed the food STAT 20 minutes before my friend had to leave and the cook finally got around to our order, and then burned it. The bruschetta was just freakishly weird -- not like any bruschetta I've ever had. They used whole canned tomatoes and some kind of flavorless cream cheese! What the heck is that? It was actually inedible. The cocktails were delicious though. I might go back because it has a nice outdoor patio, which is rare in Brooklyn. But the management needs to step up the service by ensuring they have enough staff, no matter what day or time it is. read more

Great food and drinks! Had several great experiences here and started bringing guests here when they would visit because we were all such fans. However, recently I took some friends there and tried to get a table for four around 9pm. When we arrived there was no line, but we were informed they were not taking names, but that it would only be ten minutes or so. After about fifteen minutes, I went back in to check and the greeter said once again it would be ten minutes. I told him we would be right outside and he said ok. Then, he proceeded to three parties of two and a party of three who came in after us. I reminded him we were still waiting and he once again said it would be ten minutes. So we left. My wife and I discovered Bar Toto last month. Which is sad, because we've lived here for years. We passed up the fancy, trendy places up the hill on 7th Ave. for something a little more homey, cool but low key. We were so happy we did! Bar Toto feels like a place in your neighborhood in a small city in northern Italy or Catalan Spain: a place where people in the know come by to have a great dinner or to linger over drinks. The food is sold: my wife had an excellent fish special, I tried the pasta with bolognese one night, and the pasta with sausage and kale another. Both were outstanding. And we came for brunch one morning, had a killer fritatta (me) and eggs (she). The house red for dinner was a great accompaniment, and the bar tender (we sat at the bar for dinner) was attentive but discrete, giving us her frank assessment of what to eat, what to pass on. read more

I have a business in the neighborhood and this is our go to place for lunch and dinner with friends or clients at the end of the day. It's also the place I recommend to people new to the neighborhood. Their lunch specials-- paninis soup and salads are delicious and a bargain. I usually order the eggplant or tuna panini. They have a wide variety from authentic pizzas to pasta and entree specials. Some have complained of slow service but I find them always pleasant and I don't mind a more laid back place where they don't rush you out. It's very conducive to conversation and enjoying a good meal-- dining as a pleasurable experience and not just a pit stop. read more

My husband and I recently moved to the 'hood and were excited to check out the local joints. Bar Toto, 2 blocks away. Sunday evening, super cozy, lots of character. Place is empty except for 2 other tables. We are seated, we order. No bread, no water. Surely, it's coming...? I try to get waitress' attention. After about 20 minutes, pasta is delivered, but the server takes a seat at the bar and proceeds to eat out of a plastic container. I try to flag down our waitress for some bread. She's chatting to the bartender, disappears into the kitchen. I try to flag down another waitress. She's talking to the server at the bar. Finally both my husband and I wave our arms and a waitress comes over, we ask for bread. She goes immediately to the computer, types in the order and continues to chat at the bar. We are starving so eat our pasta, assuming that bread is coming. When we're half finished I stand up and walk over to our waitress who has not left the bar, chatting to the other server. "Excuse me, can we have some bread? I asked another waitress about 15 minutes ago..." She says "Sure" and types the order into the computer, and goes back to her conversation. Resigned, I go back to our table. 15 minutes later, we are finished - and the bread arrives. 30 minutes too late for our dinner - in an empty restaurant. The waitress sees our dinner plates are already empty - no apology, no nothing. Pasta wasn't bad, but for $20/plate for non-existent service? To add insult to injury, couldn't get her attention for the check - had to interrupt her conversation at the bar for it. Never again. read more

Bar toto is awesome. Seating is cozy, the atmosphere is great. During the summer they have outdoor tables, and since they are located on 6th ave it's nice and quiet out. I love their paninis. My favorite is the burger panini with mozzarella and fries. They are pretty filling, so I usually take half home and enjoy it again the next day. Also, u must try their berry tiramisu. The most important part of being surprised by a meal is having no expectations. Stopping in after a haircut, I figured I would try out Bar Toto since I've passed it so many times. Service was very light when I came in, (~1pm) but their attention was perfect. While I only ate the Cubano Italiano Special Panini, I have to say it was a great idea of how well these guys know to cook for a lunch setting. The Panini came with a huge helping of house cut French fries, so if you're eating with less than three people I don't advise getting an appetizer. The Panini itself had a good amount of beef short rib and prosciutto, and this coming from a guy who will easily eat a foot long Italian sub. The French fries aren't too oily, but they are fried. So I would recommend asking for extra napkins (I did). While I can't comment on their entrees or pizza, the ingredients sound interesting enough that I'll be coming back to write about them at a later date. If you're in the area and looking for a quality lunch for two under fifty, this is a great spot. It's also worth noting that Bar Toto only uses organic chicken and grass-fed beef, and all their burgers can be done with a vegetarian option, which helps broaden the selection for any vegetarians, and they have a decent choice of salads for vegans as well. read more

Such a disappointment! This place has really changed. They charged us for refills on soda that comes from the gun and is just syrup flavored soda water. If you're going to charge extra for refills at least give us real Diet Coke or tell us you're going to charge us extra for every glass. When I told the waiter he should tell customers before being generous on the refills he was apologetic. We ordered a burger and asked for it to be cooked medium and it was completely rare on the inside and was drenched in some kind of mayo sauce. My meatball panini and salad were very good. It's just not what it used to be. The food quality has gone down while prices have gone up. Not worth it based on what we got and what we paid...Outrageous! Especially after we paid, went to walk out, said have a good night and no one even acknowledged us. Tonight was our last visit!!! read more

This place is awesome! Me and my husband wondered in completely by chance during our most hated time of the week...sunday brunch. I hate brunch! I dont wake up at noon and i dont appreciate that all the restaurants amend their menus to only have eggs and pancakes on them till 4pm...I need REAL food! What lured us in was Bar toto's extensive menu that included not only the usual brunch fare but also salads, panninis, pizzas, pastas and more! When we ordered the house antipasto and half a carafe of house wine we were immediately transported to our trip to italy two months prior! The antipasto was delicious (as was the wine) and the sausage panini my husband got was amazing! I got the grilled shrimp salad which while pricey ($20) was very tasty and very big, so you definitely got bang for your buck! We also loved the outdoor seating (complete with umbrellas so the sun doesnt roast your face off)! This place is truly a gem and we will definitely be back! read more

I was honestly surprised at how much I enjoyed my meal here. I know it's a neighborhood staple but honestly, I kind of avoided this place since it's known as Billy DB's fave, but finally the time came because I couldn't get a table at Talde and it was only a block away. First: cocktail prices were reasonable and the drink was strong. Second: the crab cake app was great. I was a bit hesitant at $16, but the cake was enormous and had loads of avocado, frisée and green apple salad on top. More than enough for two to share. Third: the pastas rocked it. I had the gnocchi with short rib ragú. The gnocchi were super light. Ragú had a touch too much rosemary but was otherwise yummy. Husband had the bolognese. It was excellent and the pasta was clearly house made. Service was very nice. My only complaint was the screaming child who then rode her scooter around inside, but I guess that's more on the Park Slope parents than on Bar Toto. Prices were a bit high but not out of line for the quality & quantity of food or the hood. I will definitely come back here, sooner rather than later. read more

I'm writing particularly on the brunch. We got the Eggs Di Parma, which in someone's mind anyway was eggs baked on flatbread with fontina cheese and prosciutto. (The whole focaccia / panini thing is just ruined in NYC-- ubiquitous and the same apparently in crappy delis and nice restaurants alike.) The eggs were uneven-- one completely cooked to oblivion with a hard yolk and one with a slightly (and I do mean slightly) damp yolk. The fontina was overcooked to rubber and the prosciutto tasted like it was left out from the night before. The fries arrived soggy and barely warm, tasting as if someone had spritzed them with vinegar in a vain attempt to somehow breathe life into them. I will reserve judgement and ammend pending dinner since the pizza and spaghetti and things looked good. It was only due to the wonderful company that I had at my table that the rest of the day, thankfully, was not spent in food-gloom. read more

Bar Toto its so familiar its not even funny! The food is great - better than Bar Tano in terms of dinner - brunch and lunch are on the same page. The chicken cutlet panini is a fav - made with cured meats it really hits the spot on a cold day. Their fries are cooked perfectly and go wonderfully with their homemade mayo. The prosciutto pizza with arugula salad is also very comforting. Bloody Mary is a must - one of the best in the neighborhood. The only thing I would improve is the service - not a place to go if you're in a rush. read more
