I settled on a Kale/Fennel salad, which was delightful, if not a little too fennell-y. Side of meatballs was depressingly dry and sad. The sauce was mediocre (guys, even *I* can make a better sauce and I'm a Russian Jew). Also, I was expecting some delicious bread to come out and we just got a basket of grilled panini bread soaked in garlic oil. I mean... don't get me wrong, anything soaked in oil is delicious, but it was soooo soaked, but I still ate 4 pieces lol Overall, I will say meh. This place is fantastic. I've been coming here for some time. The quality of the food hasn't declined in years. This particular night the special was a steak. I opted out on the fries and salad, and substituted mashed potatoes and kale. So being on a date, I was obviously more focused on what was sitting across the table from me. Then I tried the steak. Once the flavor hit my mouth, I had to do a double take at the plate. Yeah, this was going to be a great night. I take my steak rare. And it came back pretty. Brown rainbowing down to a deep reddish pink. Its it terrible to say that it was prettier than my date. Well for a minute anyway. [Yeah I have issues.] The mashed potatoes was a awesome call. I could have made a meal out of the potatoes and kale alone. Not that any self respecting carnivore would ever do something silly like that. The atmosphere inside is pretty nice. And sitting outside during the warmer seasons is a treat. And somehow, pretty snazzy. We were taken care of. Plenty of the basics: water, occasional check ups without being imposing. Yeah. This place rocked! I have wanted to try this place out for a while... sat at the bar and had the Americano burger (medium) with lots of Pinot Grigio. Burger was amazing. Cooked perfectly. They do the burgers on bread that is grilled. For some that is going to be a burger no-no but I was digging the crispy bread and more structured feel to the burger. It essentially tasted like a giant grilled cheese sandwich filled with burger goodness and avocado and bacon stuffed in just for good measure. Ordered a salad instead of the fries and asked for that to be served first which they did. Salad was simple and fresh. Only nit - and a very small one was the time between the salad and burger but it was all good as I was enjoying my wine(s) and chit chat with the bar keep and other patrons. Bartender was great and very attentive. Good social vibe at the bar. You can tell a bunch of regulars and locals frequent the joint. I would recommend this place and will go back. Feel like you need to hit a place twice to really be able to stamp it with a solid review. One last point - I ordered the ricotta cheese cake to go and it was great but one should never eat a burger... have a bunch of wine and then top it off with a massive slice of diabetes. We're big fans of Bar Toto. It's a great casual neighborhood hangout place with great food, great people, and wonderful atmosphere. Food: Simply put, delicious. The French Toast with caramelized apples is fantastic, the golden pancakes with berries are amazing, and the frittatas are great too. I sometimes wonder if heroin or crack is sprinkled in the Cubano Italiano because of how hard I sometimes end up jonzing for one. My wife loves the pastas, any of them, and even claims that the fries here are better than at Five Guys. Ambiance: Super-relaxed but with tasteful, warm decor that really gives off a pleasant Old-World cafe type feeling. Equally good for relaxing on a hot summer day outside with a good book, meeting up with friends for a casual drink and/or meal, or an intimate evening meal with a date or friends on a cold winter's night. Service: Very friendly waitstaff who actually remembers who you are by the second or third visit and really make an effort to be a part of the neighborhood. The lovely waitstaff always seem to be in good spirits and are always friendly. And though I'd noticed children there before we had our own, now that we are new parents, I've also recently come to appreciate how welcoming they are to kids of all ages. Came around 5:30 on a Wednesday and this place got busy quick! It's not a huge place but they also offer outdoor seating. Service was very friendly. I had the Toto panini burger and really enjoyed this. It comes with a choice of salad or fries. I opted for the salad but I tried the fries from my friend and they were thin, crispy, and fresh. The panini burger had Gorgonzola cheese in it which gave a strong over powering taste to the burger, if you're a fan of cheese like this then this is definitely the burger for you. They cook the patty to your liking, I asked for medium rare and it came out medium rare, doesn't often happen at restaurants. The bread was crispy on the outside soft on the inside. It wasn't hard to eat and food wasn't falling out all over the place. This definitely satisfies a burger craving. One of my favorite things to do is use a menu as a "jumping off point" and really customize an entree. Now usually this approach to meals is greeted with an eye roll and an air of put outness from a server/bartender, but not here! Sean was very accommodating in my want of half veggie panini half chicken. My wife got a regular burger no subs (how pedestrian). Both meals we're absolutely delicious. But the food alone wasn't what made Bar Toto my new favorite local spot. The atmosphere and the friendliness of the staff made my wife and I feel as though we were having lunch with old friends in a familiar setting, rather a new restaurant we'd never set foot in before. Never had a bad meal or service here. It's a charming space, though a bit small. There is outside seating during the warm months, which helps grow the space. Sometimes the fastest way to get a seat inside is to sit at the bar. While it is called Bar Toto, go hungry, because the food is GOOD. During dinner hours, I had a FANTASTIC salad there. My friend LOVED her personal pizza. We split a YUMMY crab cake. Overall, the food was well presented, colorful, delicious, seemed healthy, and arrived when you expected it to arrive. Fantastic customer service! Our cocktails & garlic fries were quite good. But what I really want to mention is the wonderful customer service we received. I was visiting out of town, and had accidentally left my wallet behind. (Dealing with luggage, raincoats, umbrellas, etc.) The staff found my wallet, kept it safe, and then provided it WITH ALL OF MY CASH IN TACT. Been there a couple of times, and have found the pretty pricy food to be inconsistent. They also pack together tables into the outside area, which allows for minimal distancing. We tried delivery and I can't believe how greasy everything was. I literally had to wipe my hands repeatedly from holding a ($20) panini, and also really didn't like the general taste. You know how when you're really, really hungry, and starting to get a bit tipsy, too, pretty much anything you put in your mouth tastes like the best food you've ever eaten? And on top of that, you're having a good day, you're with a sweet friend, and your hair actually looks cute for once? At first I thought that was why I loved the pappardelle with pesto as much as I did. But in retrospect, it really *was* some delicious pasta. Miss G's quattro formaggio pizza left a lot to be desired, but I can't say I ever like anything with smoked mozzarella, so, no surprise there. We shared a glass of their house wine, a Sangiovese, and for only $6 the pour was adequate to sate us both. We sat at the bar, as we are wont to do, and the bartender was perfectly friendly, helpful, and not in-your-face. A certain J-bird tells me that Toto does a mean brunch, but I don't see myself in Park Slope on a Sunday morning any time soon. read more

I love Bar Toto! I have been coming here for years and have always had a great experience. The polenta with mushrooms and gorgonzola is to die for, no seriously TO DIE FOR. Order it with an extra side of grilled bread to sop up all of the sauce. Other favorites: arugula salad, smoked mozzarella pastas and any pressed sandwich. The space can get a little tight and I have knocked over plates and glasses more than once getting up to use the toilets. They are always very nice to me about it... Oops. The food is generally Italian - offering some antipasti, paninis, pastas, salads and a handful of entrees. There are also a couple burgers, also served on yummy grilled paninis. I've had pastas, salads, entrees, burgers and paninis here - at various times, I'm not that "oink" - and all were tasty. They have a long list of amaros and lots of Italian wines. The menu is quite similar, with a few minor differences, to the sister restaurant Bar Tano on 9th st. and 3rd ave. But this place is bigger and more spacious - resulting maybe in being a bit more crowded at times (it was the first, after all). But both are good. read more

I'm familiar with exactly three Totos. There's the terrier from The Wizard of Oz. There's the 80s band most famous for singing about the rains out in Africa. And then there's Bar Toto, the Park Slope Italian joint with the bad-ass paninis. The Cubano Italiano is absolutely delicious, and one of the better sandwiches I've had lately. Stuffed with shredded beef short rib, prosciutto, red onion, Swiss cheese, pickles, and tomato garlic mayo, this culture clash of ingredients is gonna make it hard for me to order anything else at Bar Toto on subsequent visits. The only other Cuban and Italian combo I can think of where these two countries might compliment one another just as well is if Christina Milian and Marisa Tomei were to walk into my apartment and just start making out. Right. So, I'll just order the sandwich. I've also had their Brunch Panini (scrambled eggs, hot capocollo, and melted mozzarella), whose popularity is well-warranted as it's quite the morning treat. Thick buttered bread and fresh ingredients, with shoestring fries on the side? That's a winner, for sure - a great alternative to other boring breakfast staples. And if some hair of the dog is in order, it'll also go down nicely with any of Bar Toto's $6 brunch cocktails (Bloody Mary, Bloody Maria, Mimosa, Bellini, and the like). Also served here are their signature Panini Burgers. I'll admit, one's definition of what elevates a sandwich into burger territory can be a matter of interpretation, but seeing as the same deliciously bulky bread is used here instead of some more widely-acceptable bun, I'm inclined to treat this one more of a jacked patty melt than anything else. Semantics aside, the Toto Panini Burger is a worthwhile order all the same, the sharp bite of the gorgonzola and red onion offset nicely by the grass-fed ground beef. I was once a bit skeptical of Bar Toto due to their menu's seemingly pedestrian pasta offerings (a Spaghetti & Meatballs here, a Rigatoni there). This led me to go with the more bistro-esque selections from the get-go, and frankly, I've never looked back. The feel of the restaurant is certainly refurbished Brooklyn, a modern, clean, and airy set-up that still aims to preserves that old-school borough pride with pressed-tin ceilings and oxidized mirrors. And come the summer months, outdoor seating is a plus, even if the patio inevitably turns into stroller central, as much as I hate myself for perpetuating the neighborhood stereotype here. But you know what will keep those kids quiet? Stuffing their faces with Bar Toto's tasty paninis. They certainly shut me up. read more

You know what? I like Bar Toto a lot for the most part. I'd probably give it four stars, but I'm knocking it down to three for the consistently shitty service. (So, bile alert!) Take today, for example. We go there (it's afternoon and practically empty), and we ask if we can sit at one of the tables outside the shade. They ask us to sit in one in the sun, giving us some B.S. about the bigger one needing to be kept free (turned out to be a lie). So we sit down, and my friend asks if they have a) sangria or b) any drink specials, and the waiter snottily says "no, we don't do sangria. And this place is already very cheap, we don't do specials." Give me a fucking break -- are we asking this question at a dive bar where you're already serving $1.50 PBR? No, douchebag, we're asking this because your competitor Kitchen Bar down the street has $2 sangria all afternoon. You'd probably be wise to face your competition -- and then lose the unnecessary attitude while you're at it. (/end bile) On the plus side, the Italian sodas are great, as is the mushroom polenta. The location is also pretty idyllic, especially in the springtime. If they'd lose the assholes, I'd probably be back a lot more often. read more

Our exuberant waitress sold me on the "Brunch Panini" and TWO blueberry vodka lemonades (fresh muddled blueberries are hard to turn down). Just delightful. No need for cheese for sure. Crab cakes - $10. REAL crab...with a mountain of salad with light dressing. Maybe a one-time thing. Bar Toto, like its sister restaurant Bar Tano, is great. Toto is a smaller space, with a darker and more repurposed/vintage vibe, but still has that unmistakable Italian trattoria feel. They also have a nice sized outdoor seating area. Think a very stripped down and Brooklyn version of a Keith McNally joint. Cool scene, simple menu done well, good bar selection, good service, etc. Stopped in for brunch/lunch over the weekend and had a great meal. Between three of us, we had the crab cake salad, sausage/grilled onions/fontina/pesto panini, and the chicken cutlet/hot capocollo/provolone/red onion/garlic mayo panini. Everything was delicious, very fresh, great ingredients, perfect portions. Loved the relaxed vibe, accessible menu and accommodating staff. When my husband and I moved to Park Slope six years ago, our first dinner out was here. Since then, we keep coming back. The food is absolutely delicious, and at this point we've tried almost everything on the menu. Favorites include the bruschetta, the calamari, penne with peas and prosciutto (the ultimate comfort food if you ask me), and anything with the house made sausage. Paninis are great, too. I've enjoyed everything I've ever ordered here, and that includes their wines and yummy cocktails. The atmosphere is something special. In the summer it's crisp and open and dining outside on 6th is always a treat (since it's much less bustling than 5th). In the winter it's warm and cozy and very difficult to leave! We have brought every friend or family member who has visited us here, and they have all loved it. Bar Toto is our go-to for a simple, delicious meal. read more

This has become one of my favorite Italian eats in Brooklyn! I used to live closer to it, around 7th Avenue, but now I've found myself taking a cab all the way from the North Slope just to have a nice chillaxing evening with the friends at this quaint place! From spring on I've found many nice variations on their menu and was able to try these out. A success in all means! Let me start off with the only negative part I've found: The service is truly not amazing! Once you know this, you will start focusing on the food and learn to appreciate it. We have seen ourselves waiting as long as 45 minutes for the main course to be served - by no means excusable, especially since there was not much going on. The manager really seems to care about guests' opinions and I am sure he is briefing his staff regularly on hurrying up. Another damper: Kids! Kids, babies, screaming children - everywhere. Of course it's Park Slope. I understand. So far it's always been our bad luck that we ran into families who decided to bring their brats close to our tables and disturb our animated conversation. Oh well! Time to get used to the baby boom, I guess. Now to the food: Bar Toto serves the hugest olive plate appetizer I have so far come across. You get a mix of three different olive types, deliciously prepared in olive oil and other herbs. A true mind-blower and a great prelude for what is yet to come. I recommend not ordering it for yourself but rather sharing it with another person. Works for me! With only $4 it also proves to be a true bargain. Then, the pizza: Great Italian pieces that resemble European quality. Thin crust, not oversized like American pizza but just what you need in case Heimweh or Fernweh attacks you and you want to have that awesome original Italian pie. Pizza Margharita for whoever likes it plain and Toto Vegetale for the real flavor. Both pies were really awesome and one filled me up. Their pasta is also worth trying, of course. The quintessential neighborhood restaurant. The food is lovely and the wait staff intermingle irony and amazing service. I miss the carbonara, but it was a heart attack waiting to happen. Brunch all week long. I'm amending this review and taking one star off. The food is still lovely as is eating outdoors in the springtime, but the service at lunchtime is becoming sub-par because the place has become quite busy during the afternoon hours. There is one man on who serves, buses, and bartends, and I imagine there is only one person in the kitchen, as food takes way too long to come forth. I'm still a fan, and understand that the afternoon can be dead occasionally and thus the management wants to assure sufficient tips for the waiter and income for the establishment but I actually feel like the lack of service is going to detrimentally affect sales. So glad that I finally came after passing by on many occasions! Sat outside for brunch. They are super dog friendly and have doggie bowls for water. The only catch is the dog has to be tied up and outside the gate due to permits, etc. The service is good. The waitress was polite and checked in on us. Just for some reason she took a while to actually come take our order, but not a big deal at all. On to the food! Loved the brunch and cubano italiano panini! The toasty ciabatta, creamy tomato mayo, egg in the brunch panini, and the short rib in the cubano.. YUMMMMM! Love it! And the fries were crispy and delish! Bar Toto is a nice place to have dinner but not on a Friday night in the winter because they squeeze too many people in but the food is good and the service very friendly. Also the place does get quite noisy. I recommend their pizza which has a tasty thin crust and fresh tomato and cheese. The pasta is average but again not over priced. If there were half star ratings, I would give Bar Toto three and a half rather than three. The boyfriend and I came here by accident and I am glad we did! Bar Toto is really casual with a warm atmosphere. The decor is "classic" and you feel at ease being there. We sat at the bar and ordered drinks and some food. I had the Papardelle with Bolognese which consisted of short ribs..and man oh man was it scrumptious. The meat had hints of cinnamon and nutmeg but it was just the right amount..super delicious. My boyfriend had the spaghetti and meatballs which he said were good but the meatballs looked a little teeny. My friends live close to this restaurant and they really love it, so I decided to give it a try. I had the linguine with light cream and wild mushrooms. Although the pasta was cooked perfectly, the sauce was really bland. I mean, incredibly bland--so much so that every other bite I felt like I had to keep adding more salt, more pepper and more parmesan cheese. Everyone else at the table really liked their dishes [seafood pasta, broccoli rabe with sausage and cheese pizza]. So I'm not really sure what was up with my mine. Service was crazy slow but it didn't really bother any of us. The bartender overheard us saying happy birthday to one of our friends and she went out of her way to notify our waitress, who, thoughtfully brought over a slice of tiramisu cake with a birthday candle.
