It's an Asian style dive bar. When I live overseas we had a lot of these sushi bars. Live mediocre music at least once a week. Safe for the family but mostly it's a local hangout. Always looking to try something new since the suburbs leave much to be desired. Popped in on a random Wed night, the restaurant was fairly quiet. Neither of us eat fish, but were content with avocado, cucumber, and veggie roll. Also had an order of the pork gyoza, salad, miso soup, and chicken teriyaki. We each had a Sapporo and shared a hot sake. Everything was fresh and tasty. Our food came out quickly and our waitress was very sweet. Pricing was not bad for sushi in the burbs!! True local gem. The same LA-style sushi with a variety of Korean food on the menu! We used to come here during happy hours which were great! $7 for any 2 rolls on their menu and comes with soup and salad! No where you can beat that! The in side is flexible and good for groups! They usually have karaoke as well! When coming here I try to stick with the Happy hour(5-9pm) and get the Las Vegas roll and crunchy Cali! Sakebob has always been a family favorite! For Mother's Day we decided to get sushi and pork tonkatsu (a personal favorite from here, seriously one of the best you can get in the suburbs). A favorite of locals. But for those that venture upon it having had better sushi elsewhere, well.. you may not love it. The restaurant as a whole, hinders its existence and abilities. You'd have to see the place to know what I'm saying. (If you've watched any restaurant fixer-upper-program... It's not a sushi bar, its a bar that serves sushi. The restaurant has an identity crises which is blatantly obvious and ownership has done nothing to change that perception. Like most Korean bars, its about the booze and the attitudes of the ahjoomah's (mature ladies) that tend bar. Speaking of Korean they have a few tables which are set up for Kalbi but I don't remember seeing any offering of kalbi (Korean BBQ) on the menu except for an appetizer portion which is prepared in the kitchen. (Seriously, if Korean kalbi (BBQ) is not offered then why keep the grills ??) (Same question goes for the karaoke. They have ancient tape decks in plain sight but they no longer offer karaoke nights). Food wise, the sushi is decent. Sushi aficionados probably wouldn't agree. Definitely one of my favorite sushi places! I highly recommend the Las Vegas roll, but then again there isn't much that I wouldn't recommend off the sushi menu. Happy Hour on Tuesdays and Thursdays are a great deal! Service and staff is wonderful! The owners are fun and down to earth people too. They're part of the reason my friends, and I come back. This food is sooooooo good. The lady helping us was the most helpful server/owner I have ever met. We had questions about Korean Barbeque and she was very insightful. Don't be tempted by the happy hour deals. It is 500% not worth it. I've been going here for years when I needed a quick sushi fix. The last two times were what sealed the deal for me. I even wore glasses and put my hair up to see if a changed appearance (new customer) would make a difference. It did not. The second to last experience: I had a young man ID my friend and I, no big deal, but the table he sat behind us with visibly younger men, did not get ID'd. When my friend with an avocado allergy and minimal sushi knowledge asked what had it, his reply was "Pretty much everything." You're supposed to get a choice of soup or salad with your meal but half the time they wait for you to ask. The sushi is sloppily made and falls apart. The taste and spice level is never consistent so you just don't know what you're going to get. And don't expect to be offered napkins, water or checked on often or at all, especially if there's more than one table. My last and final experience was on a Saturday around 7. Not one customer walked in the entire time we were there, which speaks to its decline in service. No staff in sight for 10 minutes. Knowing from 7 years as a customer it is seat yourself, I did so. A lady who is there frequently, likely an owner or family member of the owner, basically shuns us for sitting down ourselves. My sister, 22, orders a drink. Immediately the woman questions her and analyzes her appearance before scrutinizing her ID. She then assumes I want the same drink and brings me one that is watered down and flavorless. I drink it anyway. Despite being the only customer, our experience took 2 hours because she was hiding in the back or sitting at the bar loudly laughing on her phone. Our appetizer, dumplings, was also flavorless. The sushi rolls were comparable to gas station sushi, worse than the last time. And I had an upset stomach the next morning. Be sure to check math on the bill because they don't give an itemized receipt and one time they tried charging for an extra roll I didn't order. Long story short: not worth your time or money. Place is dirty and service is almost as bad as the food. It was tolerable a few years ago but continues to get worse. Don't be like me and keep giving the place chances! Next time I crave sushi, we'll go to Orland or Tinley. read more

Now, I might be a litle bit bias since the owner's daughter is a friend, but if I didn't like this place I'd probably just skip reviewing it all together. As others have said, finiding good sushi in the south burbs is a challenge. I've only found two places good enough that I'm willing to return. Sakebob is one of them. (Big Tuna is the other if you're wondering.) The atmosphere at here is definitely unusual for a sushi restaurant. There's more of a sport's bar or club feel to this place than traditional sushi restaurant. But ya know what, I'm okay with that. In fact, I enjoy the casual vibe. Sometimes I just don't want to go to some fancy-schmancy place where I feel like I have to dress up to eat my dinner. Sometimes I want to gorge myself on sushi while wearing yoga pants. It happens. The staff is incredibly friendly - even the ones I don't know. The sushi is excellent as far as South Sububarn and Midwestern sushi goes. (Let's be honest sushi in the Midwest as a whole was ruined for me by one trip to a sushi place in California.) I've never had a roll I didn't like here, and I've always found the sushi to be fresh, delicious, and beautifully presented. And it's hard to beat the sushi happy hour prices! There's a whole list of rolls that are 2 for $6! The miso soup is also stellar. The drink selection is somewhat limited, but they're specialty martini's are fantastic. As a newbie to sushi, I can't honestly say its not the best, nor the worst. I've only visited one other place and I thought it was great. What BBQ Sakebob offered that the other place I visited did not, was variety and great drink specials. I like the cute names, beautiful dishes and again, the drink specials but what left me cold were the ambiance and the owner/hostess woman who's name I don't recall. I'd driven by this place many times and was surprised when I visited, that it was not a swanky, upscale restaurant. It was rather casual with brown hard back chairs and flat screens tuned to ESPN. No biggie, causual dining, regardless of the fare is always cool with me. My first visit was on a weekend day, it was quiet (except for the sports channel) with only 2 other patrons. The food was beautifully prepared, tasty and fresh; the service was good and I knew I'd come back. I was in the company of a male companion (he's a regular) and being there with him was one reason I enjoyed the place. My second visit included my previous companion and one of his friends. The waitress was nice enough; the drink special was a good one as well. The hostess/owner lady comes over and asks me if I were there earlier in the week. I told her no. She was a little insistent that I'd been there before...I told her I had but only one other time with the gentleman i was sitting with. She asked me if I were sure. WTF!!! At the point I was getting a little heated...she had no idea how I was related to the gentleman I was sitting with and her insisting that she'd seen me there previously was making me very uncomfortable and I sensed the same from my dinner companions. At that point, she pulled out the empty chair AND SAT DOWN, UNINVITED!! She continued to chat on about this or that, I can't say what because I tuned her out. Finally she left. My companions and I joked about her comments but her mistake had changed the tone of the evening for me. My gentlemen friend assured me that this woman could have honestly been making a mistake (or maybe not) and joked that one should not come there if they are with someone other than their present company. I was miffed but willing to let it go until the waitress, the same waitress that had been waiting on us all evening, came over to the table and repeated the scenario by asking if I had been there previously. Very tacky!! BBQ Sakebob may be a good place for sushi and drink specials but low on decorum and professionalism. While some may consider them friendly, I call 'em messy meddlesome and need to learn the meaning of keeping it short and keep it moving. I give 'em two stars. read more

After countless times passing this place, I finally stopped in to check out their menu. When I do pass by, I barely see any cars there. I am a huge sushi fan and frequently go to House of Kobe in Sherrville Indiana Upon entering, I was the only one there besides a waitress and chief. My wife and I skipped our favorite sushi stop for Sakebob's as it was on our way to another stop and we're glad we did. This is a no frills place in terms of the location and ambiance, but we loved the simple and casual atmosphere. It was about half full on a Friday night and were sat at the full bar and started our experience with a generously sized glass of plum wine, edemame and miso soup. The beans weren't the best we'd had but were very good and the soup was sans crouton, but also very good. We then ordered sushi from their Happy Hour menu that has a small assortment of 2 rolls for $7 - an assortment of California roll and tempura variants. The sushi chefs were about 3 feet away from our seats and it only took about 15 minutes for our rolls to arrive. They tasted fresh and the presentation was great. We quickly decided that the quality of the sushi was as good or better than what we'd become accustomed to elsewhere. The bartender/server was very attentive, friendly and prompt to care for our needs while not interrupting our conversation. We also found the neighborhood bar atmosphere comfortable if not endearing. Always delicious! My only complaint is that I would LOVE for them to switch the non smoked salmon out for smoked salmon in the Philadelphia roll. If this were to happen I would probably eat here much much much more frequently, because that is my favorite roll which I then have to get elsewhere. I'm not sure why I don't come here more often because it's always a great experience. The food is always amazingly delicious and it always comes out within 5 minutes of ordering. Everything is reasonably priced even when it's not happy hour, when it is happy hour, it's a great price! All the staff is very friendly and make you feel comfortable. The atmosphere inside is very home-like. It's a quiet environment, with low lighting, so it's possible to have a conversation. Considering it's easier to find a needle in the haystack than a good sushi place in the SW burbs, I was doubtful. Was greeted nicely by owners, shortly after opening. The place does have the appearance of a club rather than a restaurant (very dark), except for the cheap-ish chairs and tables. I got the lunch box sushi combo and found it to be fresh and tasty. I was glad to see eel, normally left out of a combo. I'd like to go back in the evening for the complete dining experience.
