It's my understanding that the owner's of this place went there personally to learn their way of making burgers AND the secret is in the sauces. They brought back those recipes here to San Diego. was placed on hold for too long and I hung up. Driving 25 miles out of our way was worth it to us. As we got closer, the restaurant call me back. The friendly voice apologized for the wait and asked if were we still interested in ordering. I said "yes!" I placed our order and arrived before it was packaged to go. We sat at the restaurant and enjoyed a drink as we waited for our delicious food. The Manager "comped" our drinks. Bare Back Grill is doing everything right with customer service/Satisfaction, excellent food taste and quality, sensible and friendly staff. They have my respect and business!!!

Bare Back Grill is a decent spot. We tried the chili cheese tater tots, which were pretty solid and definitely filling. They also have $5 all-day mimosas, which is a nice deal if you're just looking for something casual. The vibe leans more toward a college crowd, so it can get a bit loud and busy depending on when you go. Overall, not bad for a quick, low-key hang, but probably not somewhere I'd go out of my way for.

Very very good burger spot in PB. Went in on a Tuesday night, not expecting too much but we were really impressed. Our server Kyle was courteous and insightful. We ordered 3 burgers and a salad, a couple of beers, and a tequila drink. The food was superb- burger's all done to perfection, shoelace fries hot and crisp, salad was fresh and tasty. The only slight down tick was shortage of habanero tequila and sculpin beer. Decor was holiday all the way, they go the extra distance. I'd recommend again in a minute.

Came here over the weekend with my husband and a couple of friends -- it gets pretty cold, so definitely bring a jacket if you'll be sitting outside! Everything was absolutely delicious. My husband devoured his food in under five minutes. The habanero fried chicken sandwich was fire -- super crispy and flavorful. The fries were perfectly crunchy and seasoned just right, and I loved the calamari with its sweet dipping sauce. Service could have been a little better, it took forever to get our tab to leave. We were waiting for quite a while before anyone came to check up on us. Overall, a good spot for a tasty lunch near the beach.

Usually go to raglan in OB but today we were in PB so we tried their oldest restaurant. Not crowded. Great service. Laid back. Great music and videos. This location has the most amazing deal for their 20th anniversary. Menu prices from 2005!!! Burgers for &11 on Thursdays!!! You CANNOT BEAT THIS . You're silly if you don't come here for this deal!!! My lamb smash today was out of this world and so was my husband's wagyu smash. We opted for the strawberry fields side salad for $1 more instead of fries. Nice to have that option

Not only is their food fantastic but they offer $4 mimosas. Honestly that's really all that needs to be said. However, I will add that the staff members (bartenders, waiters/waitresses, etc) are all very welcoming and accommodating. I typically come here for brunch with large groups and they always are great with us and they have seating to accommodate a few larger groups. I recently ordered the veggie burrito and added egg and my husband had the blunt burrito. Both were fantastic and paired well with the salsa given. I was quite impressed with the veggie burrito. Very filling, fresh, and just a great combo of veggies to make it taste great on its own. Would absolutely go back for the burritos alone, but again the $4 mimosas make it even better!

I have been talking about this place non stop and trying to find an equivalent in the Bay Area. We were in PB for a short trip and last minute decided to try this place...we're so glad we did. The place isn't too big, so seating can fill up quickly. The service is fantastic and quick. The food though, was so freaking good. From their wagyu smash burger to the dips for their fries, everything was delicious. Definitely on our "go to's" whenever we visit.

Haven't been back here in a minute but it never disappoints and the onion rings and ranch satisfied my craving. If you're around for the November "burger"//sando of the month, then 1000000% recommend the Thanksgiving flavors. On point. Side of gravy for dipping? C'mon... drool worthy.

We popped in here quickly as we saw signage on the street advertising $3 Jell-O shots and $4 mimosas. It was pretty packed for a Saturday afternoon which was nice and lively. They are dog friendly, so many dogs everywhere! It looked like their menus after some really great burger options, and different specials throughout the week.

I have been coming to this location for almost 10 years now. I am so glad to see it's still open for when I take vacation trips to San Diego. This location has great hour deals. Their staff is so sweet and always goes above and beyond to make sure that you have a great experience. This location is so easy to walk to from many hotels and that's probably why it can get little busy. They have the most delicious sangria I have ever tasted- a pairing of red wine with brandy and fall flavors. This is the perfect refreshing drink to kick off your vacation with. The tomato soup paired with a grilled cheese is another favorite. The naked tenders on happy hour are always delicious too and don't forget the sweet potato fries to round out any meal.

Such a great spot. Nice chill beach vibes. The waiter who served us was so friendly and accommodating. Ordered the steak and chips and it was soooo good! Another win in PB for our group, and looked like it was always busy too while we were in town. Just a small beer bar with a solid burger menu. A couple of us sat down right before the daily lunch special ended, and they so kindly allowed us to lock it in as time expired. It was a nice start to a long weekend. They don't have a lot of craft taps, but enough to provide some variety of styles/flavor/breweries. A couple kegs blew while we were there, so had to pick a couple other options. Variety is the spice of life! And, like any good beer bar, they have a cheap domestic available... in this case- Bud Light. Those who got lunch- we loved our burgers and fries. Can't beat $15 for waygu and wonderfully seasoned fries. Just a couple of people running the ship when we were there - both super nice. We even got a couple of additional recommendations for the area. Like many places around PB, they are dog-friendly as long as they are well-behaved. Definitely a great chill spot in the area!

We have been here a few times and always have had great food and drinks. Great burgers! The Moscow mules are awesome, they have a great beer selection, and the staff has always been very friendly and done a great job. We usually go during off hours, before the PB party crowd gets going, so it has been great for our family (before 6pm). I will be going back for sure. read more

On first glance, I was expecting pretty standard bar-type food. I was very pleasantly surprised at how much this place surpassed my expectations. I had a teriyaki chicken sandwich with pineapple and some sweet potato fries, and both were absolutely delicious. They also have a pretty good beer selection, which just made everything that much tastier. I would definitely recommend/go back here. read more

Good food, excellent service! Visiting San Diego and came here because of positive yelp reviews. It's a great choice. Seemed to be plenty of locals drinking and dining. The sliders (Thursday special) were great and bigger than I'm used to seeing. Our waitress, Amanda, was one of the best waitresses I've ever had. She just made our quick dinner enjoyable and gave recommendations for our visit. The food was great, I'd go back happily. read more

Great burgers, great people, great location, near the beach. It is one of my favorite spot for a quick lunch before heading to work or when I want to have a good burger and a beer on my day off. I love this place and miss being able to go there often since we've moved to north county. Very good burgers and one of the better chicken sandwiches you will find. Very high quality organic meat and consistently good. Cool, laid back atmosphere with good music playing and surfing videos on the TV. The only thing that would make it better is if they could expland their outside sitting area since it's right near the beach. read more

Probably the best burgers in PB. Definitely my go-to if I'm craving a good burger or chicken sandwich (actually the tilapia sandwich is delicious too!). The servers and bartenders always seem to be real nice, helpful, and patient. Can't ask for more than that. Love the location too. Their sister joint down in OB, Raglan Public House, is a fun place and has pretty much the same delicious menu (except I think Bareback doesn't have the delicious pretzel app... Nom!). read more

This was our first time to Bare Back. We have tried to go a few other times, but they were always so crowded, so we went somewhere else. Overall I thought the place was very good. I got a burger (with bacon and avocado) and it was very tasty. My daughter got chicken and my wife got calamari. The burger was the highlight. Service was excellent and we will return! read more

My husbands hamburger the Queennstown fave was quite good but for $10.90 I would expect a side of fries rather than a smattering of chips. My 3 star rating was based on a couple of other factors: 1) my tempura calamari were not tempura battered rather a breaded coating 2) my ice tea was not brewed but instant, quite pricey @ $3.00 and no refills offered (nor for my husbands's soda). To be fair the server was extremely friendly and gave us the Happy Hour discount on our sides even though we arrived slightly before it started. read more

Had an awesome time here when I stayed in San Diego. The staff was real laid back and chill they had an awesome special of getting a free burger with buying a pitcher on Wednesday. Also the beer selection was awesome I just love all the micro beers, I don't even know what I had when I went there but it was all good. My husband and I truly appreciated the volume and the choice of music.Most restaurants like this play the music so loud that you can't enjoy a conversation while dining.We thought that the Guajo Loco was tasty and had a great heat.The Pollo Parmesano was disappointing.Both were the same price of $12.9.For that we expected more than the burgers (which were not large,) three small pickle slices and some potato chips.When we returned home, we both enjoyed a large salad to satisfy our hunger.Most of us work very hard to ear our pay.Paying these prices for so little food is not a good value and does not leave me satisfied or content. read more

Service took forever until Nicole took over our table. She was awesome and had great recommendations. The yamburger was delicious, like a thanksgiving burger in the summer. Bare Back Grill swept me off my feet, it was definitely lust at first sight when I saw it's juicy burgers on yelp............the actual thing definitely managed to upstage the pictures. Got the Kiwilango burger, spicyyy, nonetheless, a true taste bud pleaser. Their burgers are quantity meets quality, juicy, lean, and handcrafted to perfection! Suggest the onion rings. As is tradition, I wanted to eat a good burger for my birthday. Today I went to Bare Back Grill for the first time and I can say I was not disappointed. I ordered the average joe medium rare and got just that. The meat was juicy and full of flavor, which is what most burgers lack. To me a good burger has to have good meat, and this grass fed beef was delicious. I will definitely be coming back for more. read more

great burgers! second to only burger lounge in my opinion. (remember when Rockys was the go to spot??). The staff is extremely friendly and the location is amazing. My only quip is you have to order the fries separate so it gets expensive for burger, fries, and a coke. Otherwise I'd be there 3x a week! read more

Family fave every time we are in town. Got the Queenstown Fave with Edam cheese. So yummy. Hubby got the Kiwilango...spicy but he loves it. Come for lunch specials and add a beer for $2. Great selection. Oh and kids menu even for picky eaters. read more

First time at this place and we absolutely loved it!!! We were denied service at JRDN because we had a service dog with us, and yes , you read it correctly we were denied SERVICE so we started walking to find another place since it was our first time in town and we came across this cute little place and right away we asked the gentleman, Nathan, if we could bring in our service dog in he looked surprised with the question and said of course you can!! He sat us right away so very friendly and attentive!! The food was AMAZING!! We ordered the fish and chips that was out of this world! Everything was delicious and we highly recommend this place! Do yourself a favor, ditch the grease patties and treat yourself to an all organic, delicious burger. You will not be disappointed!! The food tastes great and they serve free range meat and locally grown produce...be responsible and support a good thing!! There is a good vibe here, they play reggae music and sirf videos...always. I stop in here regularly and have tried the Queenstown Fave, Holy Roller and the plain old Bare Burger...all of which have been great!! The fries are to die for and the staff is very friendly. This is a great place to hit after a day at the beach...it is less than a block from the ocean. They also sell cute "wake and bake" t shirts... AND they have a new location downtown, perfect for before and after Padres games!!! read more

Came here on a whim while searching for somewhere to eat while visiting SD. Nice atmosphere, felt like everybody knew eachother - patrons and staff, etc. Food was delicious - turkey chili was wonderful! We didn't feel like burgers for the evening so we chose something else to eat - but there wasn't much to choose from that wasn't of the sandwich variety. Was a little pricey but not outrageous. Waitstaff was very attentive, friendly and helpful. Great place! Wish we had one at home! read more

My only knock on it was that the chicken piece was tiny. That being said, it was well cooked and super crunchy texture which I loved. Brussel sprouts were delicious and crispy. The peanut sauce they use on it is perfect. The broccoli was decent. It ate much sweeter than I thought it would and the sauce made the labneh a little runny so it didn't stick to the broccoli well. Service was sooo friendly and very quick the whole night but we never felt rushed. I would definitely come back and try more.

A few minutes after delivering my food, he brought a to-go box, because he knew I always take most of my meal with me, and I'm always in a hurry. Sadly, seems like my main dish was the only one that was off. For the side dishes, I do highly recommend the potato puree. The roasted mushroom is again, overly salted. For dessert, we ordered coffee and a tiramisu cheesecake. Amazing amazing cheesecake and excellent coffee. When I asked where the coffee was from, the server actually gave us a free bag of coffee beans since they actually don't sell the coffee at the roaster, so I really appreciated this gesture. Overall, I think the quality of the food here is somewhat inconsistent. Some dishes we had were great and others were off. But the excellent service here (and the fact they gave us free bag of coffee) warrants an extra star, which is why I'm giving this place a 4/5. Would I come back to this place again though? Probably not given how expensive the food is and the inconsistently quality, but it was nice that I gave this place a try in San Diego.

Let me start by saying I am a Pb local and I used to eat at this place all the time. Food isn't bad but location is good and it's a good spot to grab a beer and burger if you are coming off the beach... That being said I will never come this place ever again. I have a 4 year old son who doesn't love their food so I grabbed him a piece of pizza from mr Moto (they have great Ny style pizza) across the street. I come in to bare back and order some beer and burger. Shortly after this waitress very apologetically tells me I can't have my son eating pizza in the bare back. She continues to say she feels bad and if it were up to her he could but her manager is an A hole. So I have her send him out. I basically tell the guy the info above and ask him if he can use some some discretion appropriate to the situation. He of course refused and I therefore left and took my business along with my friends who were meeting me to duck dive. They seemed to have no problem with a 4 yr old eating a piece of pizza while the adults dined. It is also important to note bare back was completely empty when this incident occurred it was the middle of the day during the week. Pretty ridiculous if you ask me. read more

We flew in for the weekend and stayed in Pacific beach, everyone in the area was talking about Bare Back Grill!!! So, we had to try it! We walked down the boardwalk which is parrel to the beach to the restaurant. It is in perfect location if you are staying in Mission Beach or Pacific beach. When we arrived, we were greeted with the friendliest welcoming by the BBG staff. The food was so good and the atmosphere is very beachy and a surf theme, super cool! I ordered the Kiwilango burger, it was the best burger I have ever had. My wife ordered the same thing but with a vege-burger and she LOVED IT! The patty was just the right texture and had great flavor. We also order Skinny Margaritas and Kyle the manager/bartender made the best drink. I normally get acid reflex when i drink margaritas, but Kyle used fresh squeezed lime juice and the margarita was so smooth. On a scale of 1 - 10, the margarita was a 10! I had the pleasure of dining at Bare Back Grill for the first time, and wow, what a fantastic experience! I ordered the Hogs & Heffers burger, and let me tell you--it was a game-changer. Made with 100% organic beef, it was stacked with crispy bacon, fresh lettuce, creamy avocado, juicy tomato, red onion, aioli, BBG sauce, and pepper jack cheese. Every bite was packed with incredible flavor, and the burger was HUGE--definitely one for the books. Our server, Alex, was amazing. Super friendly, attentive, and made sure everything was spot on throughout the night. It's always great when the staff adds to the overall experience, and Alex nailed it. We also went on Throwback Thursday, which was such a cool touch! They bring back their original 2005 menu, giving a nostalgic vibe to the evening. The menu felt like a homage to their roots, and it was fun to try something that's been part of their journey. Literally the best sandwich I've ever had. The Blazin Ahi - Seared ahi tuna, pickled carrots, sliced cucumbers & homemade wasabi mayo, crushed wasabi peas on a hawaiian sweet roll. Ask for soy sauce to dip it in and I'm telling you, it's like an entire sushi dinner between two buns. The ahi portion is substantial and seared rare (the only way to eat it). It can be a bit cramped on a Saturday night but it's worth it. Between the craft beers on draft (the Mosaic Pale Ale) is my favorite and the incredibly friendly and cheerful staff (Steven is awesome) you will be satisfied that the money you spent was on good food and drinks. Situated on Mission Boulevard a mere 50 feet from the Ocean Boardwalk, it has the beach grille vibe that is enjoyed by locals and visitors alike. It's laid back and not stuffy at all. Ive been here a few times, and still i am searching to find something here that makes me want to come back more often. I got a 2 for 1 burger coupon on my car so i decided to stop in and give it another try. I went with a buddy so we could take advantage of the coupon. got the drty jerz, which i heard was amazing. Overall, i thought it was just ok, nothing to right home about. Probably should have got it fried instead of grilled. We got the kiwi trio, and found out we need to stick to basics and just go with the fries, the calamari was messy and hard to eat. We got a couple rounds of beers as well, and even with a free burger our bill was still over $20 each, so much for a quick semi inexpensive dinner. What the hell is in the water in PB? I can't throw a pair of Ed Hardy shades without hitting a fantastic burger place. Rocky's and Big Kahuna's are two of my favorites, but BBG beats them both because it is equally delicious AND across the street from my house. Every time I'm walking my dog I want to hit the patio and grab a burger and a few beers. One complaint: I'm completely over thin-ass fries. Where are the steak fries, or even better the east coast-style boardwalk fries drenched in vinegar that I grew up with? Those things are awesome. But anyway - the burgers are perfectly cooked, seasoned, juicy, etc. The buns are a little different, but good. The variety of available burgers is nice - they even feature a lamb burger. And finally, BBG sauce is like fucking crack. I want an IV full of that shit hooked up at all times. read more

This is the 3rd year in a row that i have visited PB and always looking forward in eating at Bare Back Grill. I have eaten at many different hamburger joints and this is by far my favorite. As a resident from Montreal, Canada, i was happy to hear that their french fries are top with Montreal steak spice which makes them over the top delicious. I really enjoy their choices of hamburgers. Especially the Queenstown Fav which includes their specialty cheese, Eden Cheese. Not much of a beer drinker but i noticed that they have a great variety of local craft beers. As they are located right next to the beach, a quick lunch break at Bare Back is always part of my daily routine. I went here with a frend that lives near by. I normally don't go to beach establishments, I find them to be rather blahzay in taste and content when it comes to the quality of food in that area, but I have to say that the burgers here was delicious. I cant believe there was such thing as a LAMB burger, but I tried it and SCORE!!!! My friend had the newzealans burger and she was happy. Good place! I ordered french fries and it came with some kind of sweet sugar sprinkled on it which I wasn't a fan of, but everything else was great. Condiments, salad, pickles, were fresh. This little place has great chilli, too. It was crowded and loud but it made it kind of fun. I will definately be back to the Bare Back Grill if ever I am in the beach area again. read more

I have never been a big burger fan and it is usually hard to find a quality chicken sandwich at a burger spot but the chicken sandwich is absolutely amazing here. The chicken is perfectly cooked and almost melts in your mouth. All the ingredients are fresh, which probably explains why Bare Back is slightly on the pricy side considering their main focus is burgers. It is around $12 for a burger or chicken sandwich and that does NOT include fries, just warning you. What we usually do is order our sandwiches and then get a side or two depending on how many people we are with. They do have a great deal on Wednesdays where you can get a few different things for $5. I think they switch it up every week but I am not sure. read more

I have been here several times but have not decided to leave a review until now. The place does have good, consistent burgers and chicken sandwiches. I prefer the chicken sandwich myself since I try and avoid red meat. All the ingredients taste fresh and the bin is delicious. However I do not feel like any type of chicken sandwich or burger should be $10 or more. I don't care how close to the beach you are. The last time I came here with a group of 4 including myself, we all got burgers or chicken, a side of fries and a pitcher and our bill was $110! We were shocked! The food was good but not worth $100. Lower your prices a few dollars and I think you will have a lot more returning customers including myself! read more

This place has a pleasant atmosphere and amiable staff. The gluten-free fries were fantastic and were a perfect treat for my wife, who has celiac disease. However, we found the two salads we ordered to be quite disappointing. The beet salad was drenched in liquid released by the beets and tomatoes, causing the greens to become soggy. It would be helpful for the kitchen to review proper salad preparation techniques. For example, smaller pieces would allow the ingredients to release their liquid and reach room temperature. The greens and other ingredients should be mixed just before dressing and serving. On the other hand, the shrimp and avocado salad lacked a noticeable dressing. read more

I went on Google and looked up thier menu ordered a chicken sandwich to go it said 8.99 I added cheese he said 1.00 more so then I asked about fries 4.99?? Lol I said nah just give me the sandwich thinking 10.00 is enough for a chicken sand... get there and my bill was 15.00 for just a sandwich?? That's ridiculous I instantly regretted ordering but already had the food in my hand. It was ok... but certainly not worth 15$ and with no fries? I just wonder what makes a little beach bar chicken sandwich so pricey? Tasted like any other sandwich I've had. I won't be wasting my hard earned money here again! read more

I had been here a few years back and everything was absolutely delicious. Burgers were amazing, big and juicy and the fries were really good. The atmosphere is great too being a nice open aired beach style restaurant. However, I came back recently and it seemed something had changed. The burger was much smaller and less tasty. Not sure if I just got a bad burger just that time or they had changed their portions/meat used. I was pretty disappointed because I had talked this place up to my friend that I took there. Hopefully it was a 1-time thing but it was a waste of money for this trip. read more

Bareback is a beach favorite. They've got some of the better food at the beach (looking at you Average Joe and Jus Chillin... and around thanksgiving they'll have the Clucker as the mainstay of the month wIth turkey, Brie and a delicious gravy to dip into)... but they've also got a great ambience. Love the open windows and beach vibes. Good music - bartenders and servers are super friendly and chill. I love taking a long walk down to Bareback for Sunday Brunch. Wife finds items she likes too and she's a vegetarian. Will continue to come here regularly! read more

Bareback is the BEST burger place I have found ever. The Queenstown burger is amazing and the fries are to die for... Pretty sure they have sugar and salt on them?. The edam cheese and aioli add to the already amazing burgers. The hot young tenders are delicious saucy chicken strips and are 1/2 off during their happy hour. Go! The grilled chicken sandwich was amazing. I was craving one this morning and I heard bareback had great burgers but the grilled chicken had a nice smokey flavor but I think it was the chipotle aioli that did me in. Might I also mention that my total bill for a chicken sandwich salad and a beer was $12 that's a pretty sweet lunch. We came in on a Wednesday night and it was pretty busy the waitress was already off the clock and she still helped us with our drinks and cocktails. She was a sweetheart. The staff was pretty good however the food took a long time. The taste was mediocre price was OK the drinks were a little high in price. But they did close for approximately an hour early so we got the boots. LOL I would go back again to give him a second shot. read more

our favorite local spot. amazing burgers, $3 pints of delicious house amber, shocktop, etc on friday nights, and now all-drinks $1 after 10pm on Thurs - Sat. that was icing on the cake. hands-down our friday night hotspot. (not to give away the secret, but 9pm is the "in between crowd" after the dinner rush and before the wheel-spins really start flying). the one downside is limited seating, so expect 15min to wait. read more
