I couldn't recommend Barmakian and specifically Murat more. Like anyone else, I checked out 5-6 other jewelers when looking for an engagement ring. Barmakian was the first place I went due to my family's recommendation and their stellar reputation built over the past 100 years. Every other jeweler I met with didn't come close to comparing to Murat, who took the time to explain the process, what gives Barmakian their competitive advantage and did not start out by asking what my budget was like all the other pushy jewelers. I bought a sapphire and diamond halo ring from Murat in the Boston store. My wife liked the ring, but really wanted a cornflower blue sapphire and not the royal blue one that was in the ring. I went back to see Murat and he helped me select the right stone from their loose sapphires. tldr; Their selection is fantastic, even on a budget, the service from the moment you walk in is stellar and I am so happy we listened to the great reviews! My husband and I had done our research and spent weeks online and shopping in person all over greater Boston area. We were surprised at the reaction of some of the other stores in our price range. Many of them tried to misinform us and two even tried to shame us into increasing our budget! I flat out told both of them "Rings are a luxury not a necessity so if you can't give us courtesy and an enjoyable experience, then I can easily go to the other HUNDRED stores here" which we did! Barmakian was a different wonderful experience. We assumed it would be out of our budget and we were actually wrong, they had more selection than the mid price and street level stores. Joel was a pleasure to work with and didn't try to hustle us. He took the time to understand what I did/didn't like about rings I saw online or in person and came up with a gorgeous array of ring settings and diamonds to choose from. He was friendly and hilarious, and you could see he really enjoyed people and creating a beautiful experience for them. Joel was thorough: he was informative, funny, and didn't push us in anyway and found us the perfect setting with a beautiful diamond all under budget. We went to the Boston location during the wedding band event and I felt like a star browsing around with a glass of my favorite La Marca prosecco. (With a strawberry! Details people!) I was impressed by the wide selection of engagement rings in yellow gold, which is my favorite metal. Other jewelers barely have any selection as yellow gold isn't trendy nowadays, and it is hard to picture what a ring will look like in yellow gold for me. We worked with the store manager, who was patient, discussed many different options with us, and gave me a few different band styles to try on. I didn't want to completely pick out the ring, so I gave them an idea of what style band I liked, and he and my fiance took it from there. I asked for a wicked sparkly ring and for round stones. The jeweler told me that the correct term for sparkly is brilliant. (I knew that...) He wasn't pushy and had a compelling story about the Barmakian value proposition. He and my fiance kicked me out of the room to talk dollar bills and they took it from there. Fast forward to the engagement: I said yes and managed not to drop my absolutely gorgeous stunning BRILLIANT ring in the sand on the beach. They are incredibly well priced compared to other places and the customer service is exceptional. This is the only place that I trust leaving my diamonds with. Here it goes... As soon as I came in, I noticed the elegant and rich ambiance of the place (5 stars for that.) This went downhill from there... Within 10 seconds, without exaggeration, I was almost swapped to a booth with 3 chairs, table, and a scale. The sales person introduced himself and said he was on another call, but would be right back. So, I sat there, for good 5-10 minutes, playing Bejeweled on my cell phone. He came back, as he said he would, and introduced himself again. He quickly asked if I did my research and if I knew what I was looking for. I said that I have done my research and went to a number of places already. He replied that whatever I saw did not compare what they have, and that they have the most quality and abundance, and therefore best price out of everyone in Boston area. Basically - I need not look any further. He said that prior to asking me what I was there to purchase....which was kind of odd, but what do I know? He was requested up front via the intercom. I do not know why they have an intercom at a jewelry store. I guess it is part of customer service and what makes them stand out. He said that he would be right back. Again I was back to "Bejeweled." Another 5 minutes past, and he came back with 1 carat, 1.5 carat and 2 carat stones (of not very good quality.) He said that he was searching for them, and finally found exactly what I was looking for. (without asking me.) I guess he is a mind reader. This was not only out of my price range, but I was also looking for a smaller weight (high quality.) I asked him about that, and he said - "but of course." And suddenly out of the pocket came out 3 more sleeves containing smaller weights.... Point is, not that the quality was not good - some of the stones were of good quality, not that the prices were not good. They were average - but there is something fishy about this place, and I do not buy quality expensive things from places that feel fishy... read more

I'm frankly shocked to be the first to review Barmakian Jewelers in downtown Boston. It's where I bought my girl her engagement ring. I knew what she wanted and a had a photo, but wasn't in the market for a ring. I was just kind of testing the waters and figuring how much things cost by visiting the Jeweler's Exchange Building. I picked Barmakian because I remembered that I liked their stuff in ads I'd seen. They happened to be having a great sale during my visit. The place was very busy but Wolf helped me out. I showed him the photo and in a couple of minutes, he returned with the exact setting. I was shocked. Then we talked diamonds. I told him my price range and he immediately returned with a stone. It was round and I wanted princess so I sent him back. Moments later, he returned with a princess cut diamond. He placed it in the setting gently, told me the price, cut off another $100 and before I knew what hit me, we made a deal. She LOVES it! The ring was a little big so we went in for it to be resized, and while we were there, Wolf made some suggestions of wedding bands that were perfectly complementary. Jen found one she loved, that I could also wear and we were once again thrilled by how simple and painless Wolf made this process (though we didn't buy the bands yet). If you want to feel pressured and treated like crap while you make one of the most important and most expensive purchases of your life, go on over. Otherwise, please look elsewhere. This was a terrible experience - seldom have I had a worse one at a retail establishment of any sort. I spent a solid couple of months looking for an engagement ring for my fiancé, and visited a number of Boston jewelers, both downtown in the jeweler's district and elsewhere. Barmakian was the worst. Ugly attitude on the part of the person who helped me (the manager, no less), and an awful feel to the place, like I was being interrogated at the border for attempted smuggling instead of trying to spend thousands of dollars in their store. I was looking for an emerald cut stone, which aren't quite as popular as the rounds these days, and therefore are a little hard to come by. I went to Barmakian only because a friend told me they were a bigger operation and had a large selection. The manager, Murat, escorted me into a small, grey, claustrophobic room with a plate glass window and super harsh fluorescent lighting. Then I looked up and noticed the huge security camera mounted on the wall above his head, staring me straight in the face at a distance of maybe 6 feet. Of course, these places need security, but this sent an extremely inhospitable message. I told him what I was looking for, and he immediately brought out several stones at the very top of my price range. Several were nice looking, but price for carat and quality was no better than at any of the other, smaller operations in the same building, despite what they may tell you. The manager went on and on about how they cut their own stones, have umpteen cutters and jewelers in the back room, get the best diamonds for less, blah, blah, blah. Maybe that impresses some people but his attitude just made the whole thing feel like it was nothing special. Only one of the stones stood out as noteworthy, and I will admit that I liked it, but wasn't sure that I really liked how it was cut. It was sparkly but the table was super small and the stone cut a little too deep. So, I thought I'd think about it, take another look at a couple of the stones I had seen at another jeweler, and maybe come back the next day, as I actually did like it. Instead of being nice about it, he told me that I should buy it now if I wanted it, because it very well might not be there the next day. He'd have to show it to other people, of course, and there were lots of other people buying rings. Even told me about all the times that he had showed someone a stone, then put it back in the back of the store only to have it be sold to someone else within minutes. Come on. As a contrast, I looked at several stones at two other jewelers, and encountered nothing of the sort. They were lovely, patient, and helped bolster my feelings of excitement about this life moment. They understood that this is a big purchase that can make people nervous, and helped allay that anxiety. They happily put a few stones aside so that I could think about it and come back and look at them another day. Since most places don't stock a lot of emerald cuts, and they are all different, they were happy to bring a few more in from their cutters so that I could find one that I loved. I can highly recommend Joseph Gann Jewelers just a couple of doors down in the 384 Washington, which is where I eventually bought my fiancé's ring. It turned out perfectly and she absolutely loves it. Ask for Joshua Gann - he was wonderful from start to finish. I also had a very good experience working with Aline at ADCO. Both are family businesses and treat their customers well. Of course, if you miss your convict days and the thought of being pressured under blinding fluorescent lights in a tiny interrogation room makes you all warm and fuzzy, be my guest and walk on over to Barmakian. read more

We wanted a certified diamond that was sourced ethically, and up until I saw my future ring, I was a little lost on what style I truly wanted. Once we went to Barkmakians, we knew we made the right decision in selecting them as our jeweler. Our salesperson was patient and kind, and really listened to what we wanted out of the ring. Additionally, their pricing was competitive, and their sale's approach...informative, professional, and straight forward. Ring shopping can be very stressful factoring in the commitment behind the ring and the financial investment. At Barmakians, we were taken care of, plain and simple. As an added bonus, my fiance worked with Barmakians to surprise me with a personal inscription on the inside of the band, which made the proposal that much more special. My family has been going to Barmakian Jewelers for over 50 years. They are fantastic and have been a key part of every milestone in our lives that can be celebrated with Jewelery. I look forward to going to Barmakian as a special treat! The Barmakian family has always been great to work with and buy from. We often call in advance to ask if our favorite people are there. The process of buying jewelery can be like buying a used car, fraught with fear of scam and ripoff. I never worry about that with Barmakian. They always present a great price and the quality of the jewelery is above all the other places i have been. My grandmother has been a customer for a long time and so the store is great at sending her things in the mail since she can't make a trip in to Boston anymore. And when I have purchased things, they will ship them to you if you want, so you don't have to come back in to the city to get it after sizing. But often, the speed of work that they deliver is astounding. If you want to go this morning and buy a ring, in many cases they can size it for you that day....Even over lunch if you go in early enough. Also, when you go, don't just rely on what they have in the showcase. If you tell them some details on what you want they will bring out out a bunch more or make something special for you based on what you love. And they always give you free jewelery cleaner! I love that. For those of you who are new to Jewelery shopping (as some seem to be based on the reviews), let me give you advice. 1. You should call in advance to ask for a good time if you don't want to wait a few minutes before being served. Once they start serving you, you get individual attention. So wait for it or come at a time you get it right away. 2. Make sure you know either how much you want to spend or what you want to see or ask them to show you a variety to look at. If you are one of the "glancers" that gave a bad rating, go to the mall to just look together. You go to Barmakian when you want to do business and get the best quality at a good price, not when you want to peruse styles. (Not that you can't do that anyway. but the diamond room is about transactions, not a look see). 3. If you don't see what you want, they will get it, make it, find it for you. So ask. read more

I recently got engaged and I bought my ring at Barmakian in Boston. I can't say enough good things about my experience there. I didn't know much about diamonds and they educated me right from the start and really helped me in picking out something that was exactly right for me (and for my fiancé). I only accept high-end jewelry from two places: Barmakian or the cardo in Jerusalem's Old City. Since the latter is a bit out of the way, Barmakian is my preferred store. I love this location - while the Framingham/Natick location is bigger, there is something to be said for walking into the Jeweler's Exchange Building in downtown. The showrooms are gorgeous and I have always received fabulous service. Barmakian's online selection is a bit limited, but upon visiting, you will find a wider selection with varied price points. Of course, jewelry can be custom made for you as well, especially helpful if you need to recreate a missing piece. read more

I purchased my wedding band from here in 2008 and I get raves about it on a day to day basis. The staff really helped me pick out the perfect ring for me by helping me find a ring that paired perfectly with my very hard to match engagement ring. It was very important to me to have the ring engraved but the original ring setting did not have a filled back---they filled it for me and engraved it, no small task since the engraving is in Gaelic. My ring really sparkles and looks wonderful paired with the engagement ring but also is a standout when worn alone. The only critique I have is that some of the diamonds are not set as nicely as I would like, but nothing so noticeable I have ever taken it in to be fixed. But I liked their service enough to come back when in need of a diamond necklace and match for my sister and myself and my husband went here in a heartbeat during a sale to pick up diamond earrings for our 1st anniversary-- All of which, again, I have gotten many compliments on for the clarity, sparkle, and unique beauty. read more

I was not sure if I should go at first because I saw the bad reviews about this place. I also thought this place might be expensive because it was such a big store with long history. But I tried the other small store with good yelp reviews and hated it. Therefore, I decided to come look myself. I was already in the building anyway. I am glad I did!!!!! The collection was definitely impressive and the price is really reasonable. I came with my bf for wedding bands. I liked small diamonds at first because I thought they were cute and better priced. But after my bf convienced me to try the bigger ones, I was able to tell how much more shinny they were. Haha my bf was so awesome!!! We shopped around the whole building and several other stores nearby but ended up buying with them. Because Mr. Joel Weiner made the whole experience fun. He patiently waited for me to choose between several ones I like and helped me stay with the choice I like. He also patiently answered questions from my curious bf who had great interest in the decoration. We went to Barmakian for our wedding bands and had an awesome experience! Full disclosure: we skipped engagement rings so we can really only speak for the wedding band experience, but it was great from start to finish. Our intention was to check out a few places in the Jeweler's Building that had good Yelp or WeddingWire reviews or had been recommended to us by friends. We had done some basic "Pinterest research" on band styles we thought we might like, in an attempt to not be totally clueless customers. Barmakian was the first stop on our list since they carried a designer whose work I was interested in...and they ended up being the last stop, too! We were greeted by the manager, Murat, and he took us over to the designer's display. I didn't love the ring I thought I would, but I did love another one! Unfortunately it was way over our budget. Murat to the rescue! He told us they do custom work (all in-house!) and could easily do something almost exactly like that ring, but within our budget! We hashed out the details and then moved on to men's ring options. My fiance found a ring that he loves, but wanted it a millimeter smaller. No problem! We placed our order, made our deposit, and off we went. Such an easy process. Not once were we upsold, pressured, etc. The whole process was very relaxed and Murat was very knowledgeable when we had questions. Seven weeks later, our bands were ready to be picked up. They came out AMAZING. Really, better than we could have hoped. Mine was the more detailed of the two, and my hat is off to their person who does the hand engraving. The detail work is incredible. 5/5 stars, will continue to bedazzle ourselves at Barmakian in the future! read more

After finding the place (honestly, the only difficult part of the whole transaction), we were buzzed in and directed to Lillian. She was awesome! My husband and I had a wonderful experience getting our wedding rings from Barmakian. We did a lot of shopping around the Jewelers' Exchange, but the service and prices at Barmakian ultimately made our decision easy. Lynn (Lynne?) answered all of our questions, and we had a lot-- I wanted to design my own wedding band but didn't have any photos to go from, and the end result ended up looking EXACTLY like what I had pictured going in to the shopping experience. Lynn took the time to go over all of the specifics with my husband and me, and she was sure to check with the (in-house) jewelers throughout the process to make sure that everything we wanted was possible and practical. The end result was gorgeous! We did spend some amount of time negotiating over the price, but I think that's par for the course at small jewelers, and the end price we paid ended up very comparable to quotes I had received from other jewelers. But Barmakian far exceeded them in willingness to discuss the design with me, and the workmanship as far as I can tell (I've had the ring for about six months now and worn it for four) is excellent. I drove an hour into Boston with my husband and we along with 3 others were left outside a closed store. This is the sign they posted. Update your hours, people.
