After our boat ride to see the famous Nubble Lighthouse, we stopped at Barnacle Billy's for a cocktail and we did try their onion rings as suggested by our bartender, Claire. They were very good. This is a huge restaurant with a casual atmosophere. read more

Such a disappointment. We had just got to Maine and were looking forward to some good chowder.. the chowder was soup :(. Runny and not very flavorful. The mussels were sad, not enough garlic. I ordered haddock and she asked me if I wanted breadcrumbs on top.. well yes.... She didn't tell me it was a two dollar surcharge for breadcrumbs.. to be fair here I just looked at the menu and it mentions the 2$ for bread crumbs.....but...really? Everything I expected from a place known for authentic Maine seafood. Started off lunch with a Bloody Mary, extra spicy, on the back porch under a pleasantly cool Maine sky. I was distracted while browsing the menu as the ships in the harbor demanded my attention, but after a few minutes of intermittently browsing I decided to go for the full New England experience and ordered a 2 lb lobster with a bowl of clam chowda to dampen my appetite while I waited. My wife chose the grilled cheese with a loaf of garlic bread to start and within minutes we were both taking our first bites. The chowda was rich and chunky; not the best I've had up here in the Northeast peak of the US, but definitely one to write about. Creamy, hot, and full of flavor, this bowl of Yankee delight really hit the spot. The wife loved the garlic bread as well, "Just so damn good!" she commented after every other bite, butter dripping down her fingers. Eventually we heard "Owrdah Fifty Fouwr" and I went to claim our tray. What I found waiting on me at the counter was one of the biggest lobsters my hillbilly eyes had ever seen. Let me tell ya, once you've experienced true Maine cuisine, Red Lobster ends up looking like a convenience store knockoff. Bright red and staring me dead in the eyes, this behemoth of a crustacean made my heart flutter. I started cracking the shell and the meat I pulled out looked like something from a movie. Dipped in butter and devoured hot, this meaty red ocean bug tasted as pure and clean as a baby's daydreams. Nothing else mattered at that moment and it's one I'll never forget. Worth mentioning, Billy's offers free valet parking for their diners. A tip isn't required, but any decent human would be called upon to do so. From the valet to the cashier to the server to the busboy, Barnacle Billy's was an overly pleasant experience: authentic, delicious, comfortable, and very memorable. read more

I'm not sure where to begin. As soon as I walked in, I noticed that the whole place smelled of paint. The food took forever to be ready, which brings down the rating. I'm not a huge seafood fan, so I got a hotdog. It really wasn't anything special. Another thing that brings down the rating is the fact that there aren't any french fries, only potato chips. Driving through Maine and needed a bite to fuel the way. Thank you Barnacle Billy's for saving the day. The view overlooking the inlet was gorgeous. And we weren't aware that there were even better views on the rooftop. Up there, you could even watch the ocean currents. There are two different locations next door to each other. One offering a full service experience, and the other providing a seat yourself, pick up atmosphere. We elected for the latter, and enjoyed a tasty lobster roll and easy going cheeseburger. I did not care for the 5 or 6 teen wait staff sitting around behind us talking about their weekend. This past summer, this was our last stop for our last bite of lobster roll before leaving Maine. It was delicious and my friend really liked the dusting of paprika on top.  It was pricey as the other lobster rolls we have had, but it was a perfect, delicious ending to our Maine trip. ***In a rush? Skip to the end for my tips.*** We got it Maine style, which was the cold version with mayo. It came with a side of pickles and chips. You also get a nice view while you eat if you sit outside. We also had blueberry pie ice cream and it was amazing. The ice cream base was super creamy and had a unique richness to it. I wish I could have tried the other flavors. I suggest that you definitely try the ice cream here! Tips: -Luckily, they offer valet parking. Yay! -You order as soon as you walk in and then they will call your number, signaling you to come back to where you ordered to pick up your food. -From what I saw, there were 2 places to order, one inside and one outdoors (if you go to the left of the main entrance). -There were servers but they were only taking orders for alcoholic beverages. -There are plenty of seating, indoors and outdoors. Everyone was sitting outdoors and there was even outdoor seating on the roof. -If you are in the Ogunquit area, this place is worth coming to, but if you are looking to make a quick stop to eat, it's not a quick drive. Timewise, it wasn't very far from the highway, but it's a bit of a drive. We were in no rush, so we were glad to stop by for the food and the gorgeous views. We went to self serve, ordering was easy and food was ready within 10 minutes. I've been here many times and have always enjoyed the lobster roll. Something has changed, the lobster roll was terrible. Lobster meat was dried out and tasteless, the roll was beyond stale. Definitely not worth $34.00. Being in Maine one would expect excellent lobster, unfortunately you won't find it at Barnacle Billy's! We paid for parking at the lot, and walked around to see which resto's were open. We were looking for fried seafood. So we stopped by and stood by the take out window of this restaurant. The lady opened up the window and greeted us. We gave her our order, thinking it would be two baskets of whole belly clams. She gave us our total, and to clarify I asked if it came with French fries. I know it's sound like a minutiae, but I want to know what I'm getting. The lady then said that they don't do fried food there. So then we asked, "So no fried clams?". To where she replied no. So we left. Then we came back home to read reviews of people getting fried foods from there. At that time we were both hungry and were willing to splurge, but I'm glad we got more money out of our buck from another resto somewhere else. read more

So disappointed with our experience today. We sat at the bar where the bartender was grumpy and rude. My friend asked about corn on the cob and the bartender snapped that they don't have it. Went there on a dreary, rainy Thursday a couple of weeks ago. It wasn't crowded, and I chose to sit in the dining room. My server was Taryn, and she was wonderful. I hadn't been there since before Covid and she warmly welcomed me back. She was attentive, friendly and efficient. I am a solo diner and I really appreciated her service. And of course, the food was excellent! They lit the fire in the fireplaces while I was there which made it nice and cozy. Perfect on a gloomy day. Ah, Barnacle Billy's...an Ogunquit staple! We visited here years ago on our first trip to Ogunquit (I'm talking like 2014) and it's great to be back! Perhaps the best cold lobster roll I have ever had. This section of BB's is more fast casual. You seat yourselves inside or out, and order from either the outdoor window or inside counter. They call your number and you pick up your food. Simple! Very "New England seafood shack" vibe with a very limited menu of rolls (lobster, crab, tuna) chowder, and burgers. When you're seated, servers come around and can take your drink order from the bar. Dogs are also allowed outside on the patio! We all ordered lobster rolls and my mom got a bowl of clam chowder. She said it was phenomenal and has never had clam chowder with such big pieces of clam! Wish I got a picture of her spoonful. The lobster was incredibly fresh and SO TASTY. Seriously, this is definitely the best cold lobster roll I've tried thus far. I don't typically like cold lobster rolls and always opt for the hot "Connecticut style", but in Maine it's cold all the way. And it was good. The only downside is you get potato chips as a side. I was really craving fries that day, so definitely a bummer. But I think they're going for quick service and not doing the fryer thing. Don't usually write reviews, but we were so disappointed by our recent visit! We were surprised to see they've made the change from a full service restaurant to an order at the counter format. This would be fine if the quality of the food had remained. There is no children's menu, although the portions are sort of child-sized anyway. We had a couple cheeseburgers which were served on soggy buns, basically sitting in a puddle of beef juice. They looked like pre-formed, frozen patties. No lettuce, tomato, etc except for a cup of pickles on the side. A McDonald's burger is better, IMO. My husband ordered a lobster roll which he labeled as "not very good." Sodas were in a small cup filled mostly with ice. No fries on the menu. The best part of the experience was the free (but valet) available parking across the street. We won't be returning. read more

First night in Ogunquit and we wanted to honor it with.....Maine Lobster, Steamers and a few things in between. Plus Barnacle was the perfect stop and a mere 2 minute walk from our hotel walking the Perkins Cove Drawbridge. Sitting outdoors by Perkins Cove with the fisher boats right by us- was a sight! Who doesn't enjoy dinner with a view? The Lobster was cooked to perfection but the 2lb Steamers, were bland- nonetheless meaty. Hubs' garlic Lobster dish was ok, corn and garlic bread and other sides were fine- I guess you can't mess those up. This is my favorite place ever!! It's located 20 minutes from my parents' house and I am based in LA, so I only get to go a few times a year, but when I am home I go as much as I can. I get the mussels every single time. As someone who counts mussels as her favorite food, these are my favorite mussels. Ever. They're small - the way I like them. Run punch is unbeatable. The sauce on the salmon is perfection, baked halibut is also 5/5. The Caesar salad dressing it to die for. Love the Italian dressing too. Apparently they segregate the bar from the restaurant or something. The gal at the register was rude and so confusing to order. I was paying and ended up having two tickets. Perhaps it is an East coast thing but what the heck are we supposed to do with the broth? One sister thought to pour it over the dry clams, which made the paper tray leak the broth all over the table. So, apparently not that. It came in a cup so it would have been awkward to dip, but a quick search of the Internet turned up nothing helpful. They had a tough time cutting the clams out of their shells, but seemed happy enough dipping them in the butter. The star of the show was the amazing garlic bread!! That and the atmosphere are the only reasons this review even has 2 stars.
