Barnes serves the best BBQ that I've had in Savannah. I love BBQ sandwiches and it seems that they specialize in finger food. The redneck club is my go to. Based off the previous reviews we decided to try Barnes Restaurant. My son and I had the catfish plates and my wife had the chopped bbq. The food was good and was prepared somewhat quickly. We are visiting Savannah for a couple of days and wanted some comfort food from a local restaurant. This was the place. Boy did it fill the bill! My husband got a grilled salmon with pineapple glaze, I had a catfish plate. Both were outstanding. The salmon was an 8-ounce portion and the catfish plate had 2 filets. The only reason that we didn't give this 5 stars was because the sides were good but nothing special. read more

I had a "Redneck" Philly Cheesesteak and it was wonderful!It was large and tender and delicious! A new favorite. However - they apparently do not have a wheelchair ramp at the front entrance. The food was very good. The service was too. Everything in trays to dine in made for a crowded table. And foam cups made refills harder to get. Be sure to ask for the bbq sauce options. So after seeing a few rude and vulgar comments from the manager and or owner and referring to people as it's obvious they are "not native" to the area I felt the need to leave a review as well. I have grew up in the Savannah area and at one point ate food from Barnes Restaurant on a weekly basis. The BBQ and all the other food I have eaten from there was 100% to die for. About a month ago I went back with some family (who have also eaten there multiple times and loved the food) (oh and they are also native to Savannah) and the service as well as the food was no where near what it used to be. Not to mention the wait after placing our order. I understand due to covid business have been struggling. But when this establishment used to be packed 24/7 and at this time there was barely anyone in there and they seemed rather well staffed I do not see how nor why it took as long as it did. And for these reasons as well as the unprofessional attitude shown by the staff I will not be returning to this restaurant anytime soon. read more

Good, southern food. However, we've given up on the eat in option and only do take out as a family. The wait staff is untrained, unmotivated, and, at best, absent throughout your meal. One of the patrons had to ask for their check so they could pay and leave the last time I used the dining room. I came here on a Friday afternoon, absolutely starving, and Barnes did the job. I got a pulled pork sandwich on buttery texas toast, topped with cole slaw. The pork was tender, and it was sitting in a rich and smokey barbeque sauce that was even further improved by the hot sauce provided at the table. Trip report of our Hilton Head vacation first week of September. After all the bad reviews we were hesitant to spend one of our precious meals out despite several recommendations but decided to go for it and we weren't disappointed! Yes we're from NJ and don't know what southern cooking is and that was why wifey asked people in strip malls of where to eat and several recommended Barnes. We told our waitress, Gina where we were from, wanted to try southern cooking and for her recommendations. Gina made the experience because she was super terrific - extremely patient, understanding and accommodating. Wanted to try the crab stew but didn't know whether to get a cup or a bowl so Gina went and came back with a sample which was so rich, tasty and yummy that I had to get a bowl (should have gotten more because my family wolfed it down)! I wanted BBQ and Gina recommended a combo of rib and beef. The rub on the ribs was delish and when I saw the ring on the brisket anticipated and savored the smokiness of the brisket - another yum! Wife and daughter had to try southern fried chicken and ordered combo of white and dark meat. The manager came a short time later apologizing profusely about knowing how we wanted the fried chicken and said the cook didn't fry up any dark meat in the batch and offered free appetizer and anything else on the menu instead of waiting. They so much wanted to try ether chicken that they opted to wait and they were glad they did because the chicken was very tasty,crispy,and juicy. My son was famished and was thinking of ordering two fried combos but mom said to wait and see and Gina said "Hon, one is a lot of food and hold off until you eat one" and of course she was right. The fried grouper was so good that he wolfed down the entire order and was completely sated (he also consumed most of the soup btw)! We all didn't have room for dessert. So we had a great meal and time - hope you will give Barnes a chance for the same! read more

I'm very disappointed. I walked in and ordered flounder, shrimp, oysters and scallops with red rice. The only thing that tasted good was the rice. The flounder looked like frozen tilapia, the scallops taste like rubber and chicken mixed together and the fried shrimp we as hard as rocks.The oysters were okay but for $25, I would have loved a meal. Oh yeah, do something about all the flies in the lobby. A fan over the door would address this issue. read more

Barnes is the best. I love their barbecue, (pulled pork plate and sandwiches). The portions are generous and reasonably priced no matter what you get. It's my favorite place for fried oysters and they have the best sweet potato fries. My friends love the fried shrimp and other seafood there as well and we all love that you can have a tasty slaw or choice of Southern style hot sides like collards. Came back home to Savannah and purposely sought out some bbq from Barnes...opened at 11am...I was in the parking lot 1050am....you would think the first orders of the day would be the freshest....I'll just say that my ribs came to me got...but several pieces dry and the taste was not like the Barnes I have come to love. Express service was lacking....having to wait on my rib basket for. 20 minutes. Got to the office and that stew was sour, spoiled and not fit for human consumption. Went there for dinner! Barnes had Shrimp & Fish & Grits combo on special and it was absolutely delicious first time iI've had Shrimp & Grits. My wife had her favorite: a chicken finger salad and my sons had the BBQ. Like their shirts say, "It's All Good" We will definitely go back for more and will probably get takeout a lot more often. First time there and last time there. The service was excellent but food was nothing to write home about. It wasn't BAD food but it didn't have a lot of taste. I had a crab cake sandwich and fries and my husband had a BBQ Brisket Cheesesteak and fries. The crab cake sandwich was okay but I have had a lot better. I liked that they toasted the bun. The brisket was tender but it lacked flavor. A little salt and pepper seasoning would have been nice. And the cheese was a liquid cheddar cheese poured over the meat. We tend to be picky about our fries but we thought they were a little too soft for crinkle fries. We ordered a Sprite and a Diet Coke. Both were returned as both were nasty. Instead, we had Countrytime Pink Lemonade. We won't be going back. read more

Have to start by saying the food was great but don't expect professional service! Paid for a catered event with a 200$ mobile kitchen and at the event was told that they decided I didn't need it !!! No I didn't decide that you obviously had another event that possibly paid you more for it . My rehearsal dinner was 45 minutes late while food was shuttled from restaurant. How embarrassing to have the brides mother ask for a roll because the grandfather was feeling weak ! No call from management on Monday. I called them and they offered 100$ back to make it all better !!! No I had already paid 200$ on a signed contract for services I did not receive! The management was not even professional enough to call but put the very nice people they have working for them up to it ! Went here for dinner one night. We had been to Barne's BBQ Express downtown on Whitier a few times and we always liked their brisket. Coming from Texas we are brisket snobs. This night we got the large brisket plate with mac and cheese and a salad. The brisket was as good as we remembered! Nice smoke ring, tender & juicy, which is nice because sliced brisket can easily get dried out. The portion of brisket was very large, about a pound of meat, plenty for leftovers. The mac and cheese was ok, and the salad was nice & fresh, with a decent ranch dressing. We also ordered the sauteed scallops, with sides of baked beans and collard greens. The scallops were large, juicy & sweet...I think there were 5 or 6 of them. They were nicely sauteed, although I wish they has drained them better before putting them on the plate; nice sear and crust then sitting in juice. The sides come in small little dishes that a lot of meat-and-3 places use. I'm grateful for that at Barnes. The beans were really tasty, lots of saucy savory flavor. The greens were ok, well cooked but I'm not a fan of greens in vinegar, although a lot of people are. The atmosphere is nice and the staff very friendly. Nice decor. We will definitely go back to Barnes' for the brisket and scallops whenever we want a good meal away from the hustle and bustle downtown. I will definitely explore more of their menu. I'd give them 3.5 stars if that were an option. read more

I wanted a lunch spot after my son's graduation on 5/10/19...something that was off the beaten path...something that everyone from the Convention Center wouldn't know about unless they were from Savannah. A friend recommended this spot and I'm SO glad she did! The food was SO good and you get A LOT. Enough for 2 to eat! BBQ, seafood. The gravy for the shrimp and grits...oh my! I had a small bowl of that and could've eaten more! Everyone in or group enjoyed their food. We had the private room and our waitress was the bomb-gosh...can't recall her name! Drink orders taken and out quick. Food order taken and out quick. We were a group of 14. A few had to wait a little longer, but overall, it was out quick for our group size. The private room is LARGE. Far more than what we needed but our group size dropped from original scheduling. For the rate, we kept it. Thanks Ms. Barbara for helping get us scheduled. Just moved to Savannah, have tried many BBQ places and this is hands-down the winner. Ordered take out, ... chopped BBQ pork ... tender, moist and cooked to perfection. Outstanding flavor. The best BBQ Savannah has to offer. Only had the pork and did not eat in the restaurant. Take out counter was clean and service was friendly. Will definitely be back for more! read more
