This is a local small chain restaurant with about 6 locations in the Savannah area. We ordered take out pulled pork with coleslaw and Brunswick stew side orders. Serenity was a great server. It seemed like she was the only one attentive to the customers. Everyone else was hanging out in the back somewhere. The line had got to 6 people waiting on the host to be seated. The host ran so fast to seat people and place their menu down just to go back to wherever. The bartender spoke when we came in and said good bye. The host looking frustrated leaning on the desk said nothing. The food came out quick and taste good. It seems like the staff wasn't happy to be working and the customers noticed it as different ones commented. The smash burger and fries was very filling. Got sat and we already knew what we wanted so when the host brought our drinks my husband told her we were ready to order, she ignored him and kept walking and didn't go get anyone. We sat for 10-15 minutes without a server coming by when I finally got someone's attention and she got a different guy to take our orders. The girl that was the hostess, all she was doing was walking around and gossiping. Extremely unprofessional. Food was pretty good, other than the fried chicken was overly salty. I ordered Lunch from this restaurant today.The white tail on shrimp was not cooked in fresh cooking oil they we very dark brown.The shrimp was also over cooked.The salad had no dressing in the bag as I did request salad dressing.There was no sour cream or butter for the baked potato.The entire meal was not worth the price and poorly prepared. I stopped in on my way home from a very long drive. CH has always been one of my favorite restaurants. I ordered the Captain's Platter, save some for later! The service was terrible! I asked the waitress, nicely, to wipe the crumbs from the table. She looked at me with one of those 'no you didn't' looks. She then wiped the crumbs in my lap. She did not give me utensils nor the Splenda I'd previously requested. I later asked for a to-go box and my check. She argued with me about letting me see my bill and stood over me while I was getting my card. I felt intimidated into giving her a tip that she did not deserve. I ate there today after church. The food was not good. The french fries were cold when I got them. The hamburger bun was hard as a rock and the hamburger was overcooked, asked for medium got well done complained about it. All I was told was sorry about that and it's not the waiter's fault he didn't cook it. The food was awful. I have noticed here lately that there's a lot of that going on the food is not cooked to specifications. We also had a hamburger steak that was well overcooked and onions were put on it and it wasn't supposed to be all I can say is here isn't anything like it used to be! One out of five I would give it a one very disappointed and nobody will listen to you when you tell them that the food was bad. Nobody wants to hear it, but that's the truth! This is the first time in decades since I have had the opportunity to visit this location on Waters Avenue. I was skeptical because the old running name of this location was "the bad Carey Hilliards." I felt as though I was taking a chance but I had been to the Southside location and it really had changed. I knew that the family really wanted to return to the model that made us locals flock here and stay here, so I wanted to give the Waters Avenue spot a fresh take. I was pleasantly surprised and glad I did. I ordered the flounder and scallops with the cheddar baked potato. Yum, yum, yum. The seafood was fresh and it tasted local. The restaurant had several decorations that were The Grinch themed which was really cute. I was well satisfied with the food and I would return and recommend my friends to come here too. I would classify this restaurant as a comfort food restaurant. That's not to say that's a bad thing, but there doesn't seem to be a lot of food choices that really stand out above and beyond comfort food. I would say it's a safe place to take a family or have a gathering where everybody would be satisfied by what's on the menu. I had the deluxe club sandwich, and while it was good, I didn't care for the fact that the toast slices were very very thin. It made the sandwich difficult to eat because the thinness of the toast was almost difficult to hold the sandwich because it absorbed the moisture in the rest of the food and kind of came apart. The toast between the slices actually was non-existent because again it had absorbed the moisture and come apart. The food here is always good, but the service we received this time was completely unacceptable. Our waitress, Jessica, never greeted us when we sat down and acted annoyed when we said we were ready to order -- she told us to "give her a second" and made us wait even longer. She ignored our table multiple times, and our drinks sat empty until we repeatedly asked for refills. To make things worse, the host -- who wasn't even our server -- brought out one of our meals and managed to be more polite and helpful in a few seconds than Jessica was during our entire lunch. It's a shame that the kitchen and food quality are great, but the service ruined the experience. Definitely disappointed and won't be coming back if this is how customers are treated. read more

Nice atmosphere, they were a little short staffed, had to wait 10 or 15 min at 3:pm, no big deal. We were seated and our waitress was new, she did a decent job. We ordered smoked wings for an appetizer. We got 6 smoked wings, a little small but WOW, they were delicious, give them 8, only because they were small. Our main meal I got shrimp, scallops, oysters with green beans and pasta salad. Wife got grilled flounder, a baked potato and coleslaw. We did not like the pasta salad and green beans were just plain. The hush puppies were very plain. The seafood I give it a 4. The flounder had a little too much pepper, also a 4. If we ever go back there, we will stick with the wings, they were by far better than any wings I have had in SC. read more

While this locations interior and exterior look a little tired, the service is still as friendly as ever and is a family restaurant that has something for everyone. Also, they cater and have banquet facilities for private events. A craving for their crispy onion rings were what brought me here today. They were served piping hot, hand battered and crispy crunchy, as always. They should box and market their breading - I'd buy it! The 10 piece tail-on fried shrimp, ($7.99) were very good, but I regretted the choice of side upgrade to Brunswick Stew. The consistency was mushy with all the ingredients as if they were puréed together. Visiting from Florida at Skidaway Island State Park, this was our first time at Carey Hilliards. The restaurant was clean (including restrooms), we were genuinely welcomed the moment we entered, the service was outstanding as was the food. JA was our server and she was polite, helpful and knew the menu, helping us make good selections. Our drinks never hit empty! We shared pick 3 seafood plate and had food to take home. It was delicious, properly done and fairly priced. This is a spot we recommend and will revisit. A great find!!! read more

one star is too much. I am a native Savannahian. In the past, Hilliards had the best fried chicken and we would go weekly until a few years ago when things changed. That was when they started using the lowest grade of chicken that could be sold for human consumption. We decided to give it another try last week. Both my husband and I ordered the white meat fried chicken. The cooks did an excellent job of frying it but the quality of the chicken is so poor that nothing could make it good. There was bruising throughout the chicken that had purple colored slime. The bones did not have the normal coloring of a chicken bone purple instead. My breast was white in color with just a little purple slime. but my husband's breast although well fried was a pinkish purple color throughout the meat. not at all the coloring a chicken breast. Totally disgusting. Maybe this poultry should not be used for human consumption. read more

Let me begin by saying I was born and raised in Savannah Ga. Carey Hilliards on Waters Ave have always been one of my favorite places to eat. I ordered a Fried shrimp and grilled scallops for my dinner on August 24th. I received fried shrimp and grilled shrimp. I normally check my orders before leaving but I didn't. I immediately called once I arrived home. The manager James stated I could come pick up a new order which I told him I couldn't that I would come the next day. I am sitting in my car waiting for my order as well as another order that I placed. I was told I was only getting credit for scallops. Called the corporate office and she stated she will just charge for the other portion of the meal. I am still sitting in my car after 30 minutes. Still waiting on my parents food. Carey Hilliard's it was nice knowing you but you will not get my business again. read more

Hilliard's is a local chain that's been around decades. I've eaten here several times (various locations) over the past 40 years. The food is consistent, servers typically very personable, and attentive. Seafood seems to be their primary offer, both fried and broiled, and taste is god but fairly typical of these kinds of restaurants. That said, I am a big fan of their fried chicken. I don't know how they do it, but it's better than restaurants specializing in this dish. I suspect the extra time needed to fry it has something to do with it as the menu alerts to an extra 30-35 minutes needed to prepare it. However, Hilliard's heart may not be in making barbecue. Tonight, for a change, i ordered St. Louis ribs as a take out. The ribs were dry, and salty to the point of being inedible. I rinsed them thoroughly under hot water and used some sauce we had in the pantry. There still was a strong salty taste, but they were edible. Dry, but edible. I hope this was a one-off kitchen error as the green beans were unusually salty as well. I'll go back because I like Hilliard's, but I'll got o a proper barbecue spot for ribs. read more

I am a lifelong resident of Savannah, therefore a lifelong patron of Carey Hilliards. I've never written a review of the restaurant or the service in my 60 years. We had a most exceptional server tonight. Her name nane was Rae. She was very efficient and she went from table to table doing her job and enjoying it. She was very attentive, had a great smile, a positive attitude, and we were joking and calling her the Energizer Bunny, in a good way. Let me tell you, there is no grass growing under her feet. Our food was delivered quickly and all requests for condiments, etc. were promptly filled, and we were not the only table in her section. Her section was full and she served everyone in the same manner as us. We didn't have to ask for drink refills. She was on top of that. I don't know if we have become so complacent with poor service and poor attitudes that this server really stood out, or if she was just that exceptional. I think it is more of the latter. It is so refreshing to be served by someone who enjoys her job, and is great at what she does. We will be requesting Rae the next time we go to Carey Hilliards on Waters Avenue. Thank you Rae! We take the RV to the state park at Skidaway most years around Thanksgiving. Just about every trip includes a visit to Carey Hilliards for a plate of fried shrimp. No exception this year. The White Shrimp platter was the usual excellence. Shrimp were breaded and fried - plump and tasty. I had a baked potato to go along with it - wish it had real butter instead of "spread," but it worked OK. Being this close to the sea, I never felt the need to order from their BBQ menu. But this year, I noticed the Premium Side menu offered Brunswick Stew as a choice. I love a good stew and ordered it as a side. What a disappointment - the stuff in the bowl was more like a paste than a stew. Not sure if a blender or food grinder is involved in making this stew, but that's what it seemed like. Flavor might have been OK of the texture didn't make it look like something that I'd rather not compare to food. It took big points off what was otherwise a good meal. The fried shrimp has always been a safe bet here - spend the extra dollar for the "white shrimp" over the regular. Price is good, atmosphere isn't very "seaside-like," but it does have a certain character. Waitstaff is always friendly, and I've never had to wait for a table. Just be careful about the stew! read more
