The menu mixes a good bit of variety for every person's tastes and recently added breakfast beginning at 6am. Portions are a good size and a kids menu is also available. The restaurant seats a fair amount of patrons, and staff bend over backwards to accommodate larger families and groups. Wait staff are knowledgeable, friendly and attentive which we appreciate. Hostesses acknowledge patrons quickly and will comfortably seat you even allowing you to pick your own spot, if you have a preference. The worst barbeque ever! I ordered the brisket sandwich. The meat was only 1/2" thick at best & just barely covered the bread. But after pulling off all the slimy fat, there was only enough fatty meat (& I do mean fatty meat) to cover half the sandwich. The meat was not seasoned & there was no smoke ring leading me to believe that it was not a smoked brisket. I complained to our waitress showing her the pile of fat I pulled off & she promptly told me how much she likes the fat & to her, that was the best part of the brisket. I told her that in Texas, we would cut off & throw away that portion. My cousin ordered the pulled pork sliders which she said also had no flavor. Super yummy place we went for lunch today. Spinach dip was okay, small portion but great as a starter. For meals, we got pork sliders and a shrimp po boy. Gumbo and Brunswick stew as well. They have great BBQ and 3 amazing house sauces. The gumbo was delicious, not spicy at all though (which i prefer). The red rice was to die for. Like super delicious. Went here on a Sunday afternoon. Decor reminds me of a very typical 90's diner which I absolutely loved! Service was quick, super fun and friendly. Hungry, we decided to check it out. 2nd best decision of the day (first was going to Tybee Island on a cloudy day!) Nicole was our waitress - she immediately got drinks started for us and delivered them promptly. We have a family with diverse tastes. This restaurant had everything from Seafood: Fish/Shrimp/Oysters to BBQ: Brisket/Chicken/Pork/Ribs - also classics like Burgers, Salads &Soup, Chicken Tendors. The special of the day was Shrimp Gumbo. We love Seafood & BBQ - The table had 3 home varieties of BBQ sauce (mild/Spicy red and Carolina mustard style - original) So Brisket for us was top of mind. We ordered Brisket Sandwiches, Brisket, Flounder Blackened, Fried Catfish and Chicken Tender dinners. - You get a choice of 1 or 2 sides depending if you order Sandwich/Dinner: there were probably 16 sides to choose from we chose: Fries, Sweet Potato Fries, Baked Potato, Baked Sweet Potato, Butter Beans, Cole Slaw & Mac and Cheese. Almost gave 4 stars, but too much needs to improve. I'll give credit to the new owner with all of the additions to the menu, as well as the daily specials. But there is more to it than just additional choices. One of the specials is shrimp creole. it was OK, but basically it was shrimp over rice with a can of tomatoes poured over the top. To be "creole" it needs celery and bell pepper along with the tomatoes. I've always liked the fried okra, but this last time it was sitting in grease. The potato salad needs more seasoning, as do the green beans. For seafood and BBQ, there is more competition than there had been, so Papa's needs to step up its game or I won't be frequenting it as often as I have. read more

Papa's you make it really difficult for me, we enjoyed everything about this place the location, the decor, the service, the food, the prices but............ Is this really BBQ I think not! There was absolutely no evidence that a BBQ pit is on the premises. Everything tasted roasted (roasted nicely but roasted) I ordered the ribs and the pork loin both were roasted perfectly but missing any hint of smoke (is this smokeless BBQ?) If I had not ordered them without sauce, the tasty mustard sauce would have concealed the facts. Don't let this prevent you from feasting here it's fantastic, and in this part of the country the BBQ rules may differ from the rest of the world "if you use BBQ sauce it's BBQ" I never try seafood at a BBQ joint so I can't and won't review the seafood apparently the seafood is as good as you'd get at any Steak House. Note - Most BBQ restaurants are closed on Sundays in Savannah so if I'm ever in the area again on a Sunday I might drop back in and try a burger or fish sandwich :-) read more

Our server Ms. Lyndia said it best, "If ain't broke dont fix it". Basically the mistake many entrepreneurs make in expanding their restaurants. The consistency changes when you create chains. A family atmosphere that has an intimate feel as well. I can always be found in a cozy booth by the door from now on. Papa's has it down to a science. We started with the crab dip. It was thick, and it tasted like cream cheese mixed with crab. We also thought it was strange that it was served with bread sticks instead of something like pita or crackers. I probably wouldn't order again. For my meal, I ordered the BBQ pork dinner with green beans and Cajun fries. WOAH- that was a lot of food. I really liked the BBQ sauce, and the fries were yummy. The green beans weren't anything to write home about. My boyfriend got the ribs with fried okra and green beans. He said they were "just ok," but we did enjoy the fried okra! The restaurant is located in the strip mall next to the Publix on Whitemarsh Island. There is plenty of parking, and we were surprised to see how big the restaurant was on the inside. They have a full bar and many tables and booths. I felt like the decor could be spruced up, but we were comfortably seated and our waitress took good care of us. Love this place! It's one of those places you feel comfortable in immediately upon walking in. The decor is fun and funky and the food is fresh, local, and delicious. The wait staff is beyond friendly and go out of their way to take care of you, get your order, make sure your drink is full, and that you have everything you need. We've been here for lunch, early dinner, and for a fundraiser and all of our experiences have been positive. The vegetables are fresh and the shrimp is straight from Georgia waters and the best you can get. Highly recommend the fried shrimp. Best mustard-based sauce I have ever put in my mouth...ever. The new location isn't as quaint as the old one across the street, but that doesn't detract from the food at all. The "Bar-B-Que On 2 Buns" is my personal favorite and their signature dish. Delicious pulled pork on two soft fresh rolls with just a little of their homemade sauce and a side. The fries are alright but they serve as a pretty decent receptacle for that sweet, sweet, sauce. Normally, I go to Wiley's Championship BBQ when I want good ribs in Savannah GA, but I decided to go to Papa's BBQ instead for my 78th birthday dinner. The rib's looked fine but they were so overdone they tasted like pork jerky. To say they were dry would be an understatement. I ate around the dry and brittle skin areas. I finished half of the fried okra and some of the sweet potato fries. In my opinion, these ribs were leftover's from the lunch crowd and they sat in a warming tray in the kitchen. When I finished eating at Papa's I went across the highway to Wiley's and ordered a half slab of St. Louis ribs to go. They were as expected - perfect. I even bought a bottle of their original BBQ sauce because my bottle at home was almost empty. read more

Maybe I'm just ordering the wrong foods. Had carry-out ribs (extremely tough, dry and flavorless) and brisket dine in (almost same, the brisket is much better on a burger than just alone though) - the side salad was excellent, Mac & cheese was yummy and the fries were as expected. I just don't know! I've been a huge fan of Papa's since they were a small entity across the street. It's always nice to see a successful transition to a much larger property as so many restaurants don't survive the transition. My family and I have always loved Papa's and pleased to report that the food is great, and consistent, and the restaurant has a comfortable atmosphere. Recently though, and that's the reason for the low rating, is due to the servers. And I'm basing this on 3 , long-time servers, over approximately 10 visits. They definitely appear to have a really Nonchalant attitude. They're basically unfriendly ( as if they are doing you a favor ), do not listen or pay attention to special requests or omissions, take their time barely greeting you. What I find particularly offensive is that there appears to be a hierarchy that they follow by spending an extraordinary amount of time with the locals they know, and could care less about others. It can be a real effort to catch their attention for a drink refill or order, receiving a check, or checking back to see if anything else is needed. The owner is very nice, and I hope he takes notice of this. I'll still order from Papas because of their food, but will most likely be a to go order, if I don't go elsewhere. read more
