Who would think that you could find a decent BBQ place in a little town like Ft Montgomery, NY? We were there for a wedding (at West Point) and practically filled the Holiday Inn Express located right behind Barnstormer. I had the Carolina BBQ sandwich and it was excellent but the sweet potato fries were awesome. Not too greasy and just crispy enough. Another in my party had the BBQ Pork sandwich which he said was also excellent. Since I tried his regular fries I can tell you they were also excellent! No 5 star rating until I visit again, which I will. The hotel needs to work out some kind of deal with Barnstormers since they really have a captive audience. One negative is the "parking lot" in front of the restaurant - definitely too small. Try it, you will definitely like it! read more

This is a small cozy restaurant that is 5 minutes away from Bear Mountain. My wife and I shared the ribs and chicken combo that comes with 2 sides for $28. I actually really enjoyed the sweet smoky bbq flavor of their ribs and chicken. But I couldn't forgive how dry the meat was. Some pieces were so tough I could barely chew it. The fries were good, as well as the Mac and cheese. Service was quite slow even though it did not seem busy. But I didn't knock off 2 stars for that. I just came to eat. I just hate dry food. Family road trip through New York, spending a few days at West Point. Our last night here, and we decided to give Barnstormer a try. It proved to be a great decision. My and I shared the Pig Out, and it was awesome. All the meats were awesome, and the Mac and cheese and the collard greens were great. The owner, Jeff, came by our table and spoke to us for a while. I came to Bear Mountain to look at the leaves change and on the drive up, I got hungry. I searched yelp for a place with great reviews and this place came up. There is ample parking. It looks small from the outside but huge inside. It has a very homey feel to it. They accept credit and cash. They have a bar. This is a very casual family restaurant. The service was a bit slow. But friendly, if that makes any sense. The food was delicious despite its mehhh presentation. Get the wings!! They are smoked and taste amazing with the mild sauce and homemade blue cheese ranch mix. The 1/4 chicken combo that I ordered was delicious. The portions were pretty big. The Smoked BBQ Breast and Wing (juicy and tender) The cornbread was sweet and not overly dry. The Mac N Cheese was good, could have been better if they had baked it but still yummy. If I come back this week way? I'll eat here again. Pretty good bbq joint just outside Bear Mountain. I was up in the area doing a bit of hiking and wanted to grab a bite. When I saw a bbq place, I was all for it. It has a nice open area for table seating and a small bar area, with TVs. It was a nice clean looking place. The waitress was also very attentive. I started with the U peel shrimp with Cajun spices. It had a nice kick. The shrimp were good and meaty. You get them by the half pound. I also got a combo plate which I chose kielbasa and brisket. The plate came with 2 sides, I got the baked beans and the Mac & cheese (who needs vegetables right?). The brisket was delicious, tender and feel apart in my mouth. The kielbasa had a wonderful snap and was absolutely phenomenal. The only part of the meal I wasn't impressed by was the Mac & cheese. It was shells, tasted bland and was disappointing. Exceptional food with an "at home" feel, Barbstormer bbq blew my mind! Spacious and simple interiors with locally brewed beers and ciders and some amazing barbecue pork ribs and other selection of meats with an option of wet or dry. We got a full rack of ribs- half wet and half dry with chicken wings, cornbread, mac n cheese, hand cut fries and cole slaw. Everything was perfectly cooked and the ribs were tender and succulent and falling off the bone. The chicken wings were bbq-ed instead of fried before being dipped into a spicy sauce which gave a wonderful smokey flavor to them. Polite and efficient service at Barnstormer BBQ. Free refills on soda ($2.75). Full spare ribs are available Memphis dry or Kansas wet. They can be ordered in 1/4, 1/2, 3/4 and full rack ($19.95) either as just ribs including two sides or part of combos that use kielbasa, chicken, brisket or pulled pork and top out at $22 for multiples of meat. 1/2 rack of ribs are also available as an appetizer for $13 with no sides. Appetizers include chili and peel and eat shrimp as well as chicken wings. The jumbo BBQ chicken wings ($10) for a dozen are indeed jumbo - plump and moist. BBQ? Not so much - definitely fried and then finished on an open flame to give them the essence of charcoal. Available in mild, medium, hot and super hot, the medium was barely noticeable and generally lacked any flavor. Other than the charcoal. These wings were better when doused in the BBQ sauce that was provided to add to the ribs. The ribs, The ribs. A 1pm Saturday visit would have hoped for a better showing but unfortunately, not this day. Although a decent sized portion, these uncut ribs were clearly not made today and as such could be discerned before they ever reached the table. The meat had settled to a flat volume from the section of what should have been the thickest and juiciest part of the rack. Very little evidence of the requested Kansas City treatment was visible on the exterior. While obviously rubbed, the rub/bark came away in chunks as the ribs were sliced into individual pieces. A dull, light grey interior was completely devoid of juices. Zero smoke flavor was not helped by the lack of gusto in the rub itself. The meat held together relatively well although the tip section easily separated from the rest of the rub and was also dry. Downright bad were these specimens. So bad in fact that we only ate three of the six that were served. It is possible that the large tour party that was served directly before us received all of that day's fresh prepared ribs, but a quick observation of the table uncovered that maybe amongst the 15 of them, two racks total had been ordered. Unfortunately, this guy won't be going out of his way to visit this BBQ joint. read more

Rode my motorcycle up to Fort Montgomery on my way to ride Bear Mountain, decided not to go for a franchise meal for lunch and thought of this place. Service was good, not expecting a red carpet just a damn good pulled pork sandwich with some sweet potato fries and a hot cup of tea. That's exactly what i ended up getting. Server was nice and chatted for a bit even though it was busy. Definitely worth the trip. Deserves four stars for sure since it was my first visit and didn't have much if a meal to show for. We have a local BBQ place in Rockland that many swear by. Barnstormer blows the doors off of this place, and any other local BBQ within 2 hrs of our home in West Nyack. We drive 35 minutes a few times a year to get their wings (they're smoked!) their kielbasa (my favorite) and chicken and ribs (what my husband gets.) The staff are so nice, the beer selection is always top notch and the drive home gives us time to digest so we can dig into the leftovers when we get home. If you like BBQ you have to get up there soon. read more

We tried this place out on a whim and there's literally NOTHING bad I can say about this joint. Five stars across the board. We started off with the spicy peel and eat shrimp and they were jumbo shrimp with just the right amount of heat, the brisket was beautifully smoked and so lean with minimal fat, the pulled pork was piled high tender and full of flavor, the ribs were meaty, sweet with just the right hint of smoke, the cornbread was warm and moist and just enough to compliment the meal. Extra kudos to the house made sweet tea and definitely giving props to the roll of paper towels purposely left on your table for cleanup. Nice decor and a very friendly and attentive staff. After hiking the trails of Bear Mountain we landed here thanks to Yelp for a victory meal. Upon ordering the craft beer on tap we were disappointed, as it didnt taste good at all, so we just went with bottled beer. Ordered the wings 'mild' which were very good and large. I hate it when restaurants serve tiny wings which look like they came of a pigeon and not a chicken. These wings were excellent. I wish i ordered them 'hot' instead as mild didn't have the kick I was expecting. Thankfully they had hot sauce as well as Tabasco at every table which did the trick! Then came the ribs. I had a long time deciding whether to get the combo meal or just 1/2 rack. I went with 1/2 rack while my friend ordered the 1/4 rack and kielbasa combo. Everything was absolutely delicious. Ribs came right off the bone and were very juicy. I am glad I stopped by and will come again when visiting the Bear Mountain. They don't have wet naps, but do have a roll of paper towel, so just dip that into water and wipe the BBQ right off, or just go to the bathroom and wash up. read more

Let me establish that I am spoiled, living here in Nashville and having been to Memphis. The BBQ here is just okay at best. Expect to be disappointed if you are picky about your BBQ. The flavors are all off on the meat products. The sauces aren't anything spicy and the chili is blah at best (some j/v firehouse stuff). Saw this place along the road - Yelp said it was good - so we decided to give it a try. So glad we did. I had a 1/4 stack of ribs done Carolina dry style. Came with a side of Mac and cheese and fries. My god! So damn good. Ribs were done just right - not sweet which is a must for me. Mac n cheese was amazing as well -- and the fries ..... I want the recipe for those fries. So yes, if you are traveling along Route 9 and are near this place , do yourself a favor and stop in.
