Spent the day at Bear Mountain and came here for a late lunch. The food was more delicious as anything we'd had in the City without the NYC prices. The BBQ Carolina Sandwich and the BBQ Pulled Pork Melt Sandwich we're excellent and the sweet potatoes were the best. We topped it off with Pecan pie and Chocolate cake! The service was exceptional with a very welcoming vibe! We'll definitely be back again! Want to try the ribs, kielbasa, or burgers and more of the sides next time! read more

Full disclosure alert: I was super hungry to beginwith. Now with that said, we really enjoyed this place. The owner came by and greeted us several times, I wish our waitress would've done more of that as our drinks were running dry (free refill on soft drinks). The Beef Brisket that I had was delish, fries were too salty or it could've been just me. Coleslaw was outstanding. On my lovely date's plate sge had thw 1/4 chicken. She tore that up pretty quickly but her "dirty rice" went untouched, I tasted it and understood why. She obliterated the baked potato. Our friends split a plate of 3 items; ribs, beef brisket and kielbalsa... forgot their sides but the pretty much finished it all... Overall this place was good and needs very little to be great. I really wanted to love this place. As frequent travelers to the West Point, New York area, we have passed this place many times and tonight we finally tried it. As a retired Army family, we have spent many years living in the South with a huge selection of great BBQ. Sadly, Barnstormer doesn't come close. We ordered a rack of ribs, two meat combo with (extremely soggy, greasy) fries and Cole slaw. The ribs were not too tough-- but not falling off the bone for sure: I would say were boiled, then broiled -- not much flavor for sure. The sausage of the 2 meat combo-- seemed to be a kielbasa -- polish sausage-- hmmm: disappointing. The second of the combo, brisket tasted-- well tasteless and also boiled. Now, the Cole slaw was disgusting and inedible. Cole Slaw is so simple to make. I don't think there is any excuse for how horrible Barnstormer's is. This restaurant has a fabulous idea. Went to Fort Montgomery for the weekend and stopped by this place cause it's what all the locals rave about. Make sure to go with an appetite because their three meat combo is worth it. I got the ribs, pulled pork, and chicken which wasn't dry at all and skin was tasty. For the sides I stuck to the beans and corn bread. The waitress was nice, sat us down quickly and gave us good conversation. More importantly besides the food, this place is equipped with craft beer and your popular more commonly seen beers as well. They had the nitro milk stout which is always sold out at every other place I go and I was in heaven! read more

This would have been a 1-star review if this place were in St Louis, but since we're in NY I upped them a star for trying and because the waitress was really nice. Met a colleague for lunch. He arrived first and ordered some wings. The wings and I arrived at the same time, and she greeted me warmly and dropped off a menu. She already had some water waiting for me. I ordered a 1/4 rack of ribs with sides of tomato & cucumber salad and mashed sweet potatoes. Friendly, courteous, and prompt service all around. Food, here's the reason for the low rating: Ribs: rub was good, but the ribs were nearly impossible to cut apart due to the massive amount of gristle near the joint. Once I wrestled them off the bone, there was not a lot of meat and the meat was pretty dried out. Got tired of eating them well before they were gone. Ribs like this would put a place out of business in a week in St. Louis. Cucumber & tomato salad: big chunks of cucumber and tomato served in I-don't-even-know-what-that-sauce-was, but I didn't like it. Waitress warned me that there was a little bit of cayenne in the sauce, even it was lost in the sour weirdness. Mashed sweet potatoes: Yummy! The best thing I ate there! I was scraping the bowl they were so good. Since we arrived late afternoon, my colleague and I were debating whether or not we would eat dinner. Been going here for years! Been a patron since they had their location in the Target plaza in Newburgh, NY. Food and service are both very good. I recommend the pulled pork nachos, sweet potato fries, and the grilled chicken sandwiches. Parking is a little challenging on a Friday or Saturday night as it gets busy. A bunch of buddies stumbled upon this gem of a bbq place and we couldn't have been happier we did. After a victorious Army Football win a group of buddies and I headed to the barnstormer with an empty gullet we all shared "the pigout" and an order of their chicken wings. The wings where amazing and their sauces where delicious and had the old school hickory heat to them. On vacation in the area my fiance made this spot a must during our stay. We don't have many authentic BBQ joints in NYC so having the chance to experience one made him oh so happy. I knew this wasn't a place for a non meater eater to be but that's the thing about relationships....you do things the other person enjoys, even if that "thing" involves devouring pounds and pounds of barbecued meats. The place has a decent parking lot and inside the layout is simple, with about a full bar and 20 tables scattered thoughtout. There was a bridal party in the back and one waitress so it took a good 5 min to get seated. Though she was busy she was constantly checking in so I did appreciate that. I WAS pleasantly surprised to see some seafood options on the menu so I took advantage and ordered the peel shrimp and nachos. He got the buffalo wings. Wow what a let down. The shrimp were cold and tasteless and the nachos looked like something a 5 year old put together. All the ingredients looked store bought, down to the crappy salsa and bagged cheese that connected everything together. He said his buffalo wings were weirdly charred and left a burned flavor in his mouth. A big strike for the first course....but we were still hopeful. For my entree I got the shrimp with grits. He got the Pig Out which included a whole mess of stuff: kielbasa, chicken leg, shredded pork, ribs, the works. Again very sad to say I did not any of it. The shrimps were so overseasoned...all I tasted were thyme and salt. Must of fell out of the chef's hands when they were preparing my food. The grits were nothing to sneeze at, not cheesy enough and pretty bland. My boo was very disappointed with his heap of food. The chicken leg was inedible and dry to hell. The pulled pork and brisket were good though. At least the mac and cheese and potato salad were good. Oh well... 80 something bucks down the drain. Next time he wants real barbecue, I'll wait till we head down somewhere south. read more

Im not going to compare Barnstormer to all the great BBQ joints of America, cause that wouldnt even make sense. But I will say its a GODSEND in the Bear Mountain/West Point area. There are almost no restaurants here, so to find something decent would have been welcome, but Barnstormer was better than decent. It was really good. And it stays open all day. And its comfortable. We stopped in on a 95 degree day, in the middle of the afternoon, and we were starving. Order the mac n cheese, the cornbread, the coleslaw and the ribs. Our groups consensus was to go for the sauced ones, even if you usually like your ribs naked. The sauce is definitely not overwhelming, and adds just the right amount of flavor that the dry ribs lacked a bit. We didnt order the dessert but that banana pudding looked great. Went here for lunch one day with a buddy from work. It was a nice change of pace from the usual selection of eateries in Highland Falls. I went with a 1/2 rack of Ribs and my compadre went with pulled pork sandwich. Although my ribs were supposed to come "slathered" in BBQ sauce, they were actually pretty dry. Pulled pork sandwich was the same. I was going to ask for some extra sauce but i swear I heard the waiter tell another table that they were out of sauce. Not sure how you run a BBQ joint and run out of sauce. I never did ask for myself so I won't hold it against them. The food was super tasty even without the extra sauce. The sweet potato fries were also really good. They also had a couple of good craft beers on tap... Magic Hat #9, Six Point Bengali Tiger and something else that slips my mind. This place is alright, overall it seemed kinda half-assed. The ribs were the best thing I've had here, and I've had em twice. The rub on them was good and the tenderness was fine both times but I see others have had issues with that. One of the times the smoke flavor seemed off, like there was some propane or lighter fluid flavor to it. yuck. I had a quarter chicken once, it looked big but once I picked off the huge chunks of fat from the skin I felt a little ripped off. the flavor of the chicken was good but it could have been cooked a little bit longer, it was plenty juicy but a little tough. The brisket and the pulled pork were disappointing. they were okay but I hate it when places pre-sauce the meat and let it sit around in a warming tray for hours on end, it takes away from both the flavor of the meat and the flavor of the sauce. I got extra sauce on the side and it was decent. not my favorite sauce but I could tell it was homemade, so that's a plus. as for the sides, they were decent, not awful but nothing too special either. The worst one was probably the baked beans, they seemed straight out of a can with bbq sauce added to em, I didn't even see any meat in there. The cornbread had good flavor but it was a little on the dry side, and most bbq places include a complimentary piece with a meal, but not here, you have to order it as a side. The potato salad was ok, as was the mac n cheese. I had the fries too and I thought those were the best side this place has to offer. The restaurant is on the small side but the few times I was there it was never packed, it had a nice cozy vibe and there's a bar with some decent beers. One of the waitresses I had was really nice. Food settled nicely in my stomach and was cooked to perfection but the flavor was very mild. The smoky taste of the pork was unusual. I don't know if it's the wood they use or what. I am gluten free so I had potato wedges with pork on top and a side of coleslaw.I enjoyed it but needed way more dressing or bbq sauce or something to really ring my chimes. This is good food but I might try something different on the menu if I hiked up there again. I would have also appreciated a little more effort in the ambiance department. During Covid we are basically eating in a parking lot on the side of the road at a sticky bare table. A cheery plastic red and white tablecloth or a plant or something so it felt a little more welcoming would have been nice. I know it's tough times but there must be something inexpensive they could do to make it a little better dining experience. All in all a good option in the area. I've come to realize I'm a bit of a food snob. But living in NYC can do that to you. I can't imagine finding good food out here is that easy though so take what I say with a grain of salt. If you're starving, don't hold your breathe, the food takes a while to come out, maybe it's because they just opened, but nobody paying for a meal should have to wait over an hour for their food. But the good part about waiting so long was that you're even hungrier and you'll eat the food anyway. Lets start with the brisket. I would've loved for the pitmaster to try it himself and see if he was proud of it. I'd like to Gordon Ramsey style chew his ass out for serving brisket like that. It tasted like the sole of an old shoe...rubbery, dry, gray, and tasteless. I asked for the moist cut, and it was nowhere to be found. It definitely wasn't made fresh, or at least no freshly made brisket should taste like that. If you like to chew on sand or wood, get the chicken you won't be disappointed. It felt like it was sucking the life out of your saliva glands. However long the pitmaster cooked it, maybe cut it in half and you would've had a proper juicy bird. The dry rack of ribs is maybe the only thing that saved this place from a 1 star. The ribs were just okay, but they weren't overly dried out like the rest of the food so it was a little delight to have such a treat. I've had better beans from a can than here. Although these are probably from a can as well. The mac and cheese was such a letdown too. It tasted like how a hospital cafeteria would serve. If you're going to get a side, get a side of fries. I ride my Motorcycle in this area constantly, and I often ride past this place. It often has bikes parked out front, and usually is jamming. This Saturday, my gf and I decided to stop in and eat for the first time. OK, it's a little "divey", outside and in. You expect the French Laundry in the middle of nowhere? It's classic roadside BBQ, decorated with some cool old tin signs, and some WW1 Biplane pictures. It's cute. It was well after lunch, and the place was fairly busy, but not crowded. The waitress gave us a table right off, and was great through the whole meal. Friendly, fast. Both of us ordered the house salad with an addition of pulled pork. Now, this far out of the city, I was expecting a pile of iceberg lettuce, but I was pleasantly surprised! A beautiful bed of mixed field greens, some cuke, tomatoes, and some onion. The dressing was good, and the pulled pork was great! As we were leaving, the table next to ours got their order... Some sort of grilled shrimp dish. Looked and smelled amazing. I know what I'm ordering next time! My only knock on the place is the parking situation. Not much they can do there, but it's a bit tough if you have a heavy bike. The lot is angled oddly, and there is a lip to get out to the street. Overall? A great little roadside diner, serving solid BBQ and better than expected salad. Fast, friendly staff, prices are good. I was hungry, wanted an early dinner and protein with something to take home. What else but ribs and a half bbq chicken! I decided to try Barnstormer because it offered more than typical bbq. Firstly, walking in I was not inundated by wood fire smoke, otherwise I'd have left. The restaurant was surprisingly busy for 3pm. The server said that the ribs were standard pork not baby back so I thought half would be okay. In short, these meats were cooked and smoked perfectly. Both were completely cooked and moist. The ribs had a bit of char and crispness so it must have gone back over a flame. Most notable was the perfect smoked flavor that was perceptive thru all levels of the meat but not overwhelming. If you've had over smoked meat before you know how nauseating it can be. Not so here. Poultry especially can be over smoked but again the chicken half was perfect. I took half of each home for another meal. The side selection was typical for bbq. The server said the ear of corn was fresh and local as was the cabbage used in the house made coleslaw. Both were well done with the corn a little under cooked but I prefer this to over done and mush. The beer selections were well suited to bbq. I had a delightful IPA. They didn't have sweet tea?!? How could any legitimate establishment call themselves a BBQ joint and not serve sweet tea? I was highly disappointed. Barnstormers does a mediocre job replicating different styles of southern BBQ, but misses the mark on multiple fla LTs and techniques. I was elated when I saw Texas brisket on the menu. The menu even claims that the dish will make you "feel like you're in Texas". Having lived there for three years, I was looking forward to reminiscing. I was electing dry rubbed, slow smoked, tender sliced brisket. Instead I was served a dish that more resembled a sloppy joe- beef chopped and emerssed in a sauce. In Austin brisket is sliced and sauce is a condiment. I don't know where the owner of Barnstomers learned brisket, but it wasn't in any part of Texas I've ever been. The ribs come wet or dry. They tasted like they were boiled and broiled and lacked any hint of smokiness that I would expect in classic BBQ restaurant. Barnstomers could improve their quality tremendously if they fired up a grill out back. However the signature grill flavors that I remember for Lower Georgia and Texas were missing from this meal. Service was also slow. Which is weird because there were only two other guests here. The corn bread was the best part of our meal. Skip the potatoe salad. . BBQ is one of my favorite things to eat and when I'm craving it I actually travel to NYC. So on my day off my friend and I took the ride with empty bellies. I guess I should've taken heed of the near empty parking lot on a Saturday but like I said.. I love BBQ and I came to eat. Started with chili nachos... Very frat house..chili is decent firehouse style chili and honestly it saved the dish. Dull, cheap cheese & salsa. Decided to share the Pig Out Platter because we wanted to try a little bit of everything...with the exception of chicken.. We double the rib portion and omitted the chicken. Asked for fries and coleslaw for sides...got fries and more chili.. Didn't mention it. The ribs... Uh so disappointed.. They just seemed tired..like a day or two old and reheated. I happen to like my ribs wet but the reality is you could barely choke this down without dousing it in sauce. The brisket... I had to study the plate and poke into this pile of what really looked like canned dog food..to discerne between the brisket and the pulled pork..which there was really just a slight color difference hardly a taste difference? Everything was kind of a metallic, sour ketchup/vinegar taste. Bummed me out. The kielbasa... Finally, something juicy and delicious! The fries.. I'm sure when they're fresh they're tasty.. I stayed at Bear Mountain Inn, and there was good food in the 1915 restaurant... but I wish I knew of this spot! Barnstormer had such great food and service!
