Excellent Thai food! This was our first visit, so we tried several menu items. All were excellent-pad Thai, Taste of Ginger- vegetables with tofu, soft spring rolls and mango with sticky rice (which was the only one I remembered to photograph!). Since I had advanced notice that we were coming here, I decided to read the almost 40 reviews prior to our arrival. Most yelpers were pretty pleased with the offerings, but there were complaints about price and portions. There is plenty of parking and there are several other businesses in the immediate area. To be honest, I'm not the most knowledgeable person when it comes to Thai food so I'll add a few observations that others may have missed. For starters, they do have a decent wine list which is priced at about 2 1/2 times retail along with some decent sakes and a couple of craft beers. The interior is clean and modern with about a dozen tables to sit at. There's a couple of flat screens and Asian pop music playing overhead. Everyone gets a golden fork wrapped in a paper napkin. We started with the spring rolls which were delightfully fresh and coconut shrimp which were hot and tender. I had the teriyaki chicken and got some chili hot sauce to kick the heat up a notch. My meal came with a side of white rice, they do not have a brown rice option. The wife had fried rice with basil and chicken which was the perfect fusion of flavors. I will agree with some yelpers that the food is a little bit expensive, but the portions were sizable. For some reason, they were out of three of their four desserts. When it's time to settle up with the credit card, they will bring you the handheld device with the tip information on display. Plenty of photos included. read more

Really fire Thai spot. If I hadn't already found my #1 favorite thai restaurant (Too Thai in Carrollton, TX) this would've been it. But every different dish had such good flavor. The khao soii curry was really tasty and the chicken and crispy egg noodles added a nice texture with everything else. The pad ga pow was very flavorful and cooked very well. Added some of it into the curry from the khao soii and had a nice combo meal. The rice and pad Thai were solid but nothing crazy. Just visited last night for take out grub - Barn Yen Thaispice slapped another grand slam with us! I had the Pad Kee Mao, the wife had the Pad Thai (both dishes served with chicken and medium spice) and both were "outta-sight"! The tase was dead on and we shared the crab fried rice and it's the OVERALL favorite of ours (and others as the reviews reflect). The 5-stars are well earned here. Having a hankering for some good Thai food after moving to the Austin area last week, we decided to try BarnYen as it was recommended by my wife's nail technician. We were not disappointed. I spent 6+ years of my childhood in Thailand (1966-1972) and return there often. Speaking Thai is still something I have retained after all these years, and any time we visit a Thai restaurant, I make sure to speak Thai to any of the servers or cooks so they know I absolutely understand what good Thai food is. The servers at BarnYen were very attentive, friendly, and informative. We decided on an appetizer of fresh spring rolls, I opted for the Pad Krapow with chicken, and my wife went to her favorite; chicken pad Thai. Below are my ratings: - Fresh spring rolls 9.5/10. The rolls were soft, fresh, and served with a very tasty peanut sauce. The only reason I don't give them a 10 is that the only options for protein were tofu or chicken (no shrimp). I suggest they add a shrimp option, even if they have to up charge for it (I would have gladly paid). Forgot to take a pic of these as we dove right in to taste them... - Pad Krapow 9.5/10. This is some of the tastiest and flavorful Krapow that I have had in a U.S. based Thai restaurant. A large portion, full of chopped chicken, plenty of basil flavor, and topped with a perfectly cooked fried egg. I really liked the accompanying thick slices of cucumber, fish sauce and chili sauce, and a very nice bunch of fried basil. The only reason I don't give it a 10 is that it was missing chopped long beans (a very traditional element of Krapow). I really like the fact that they didn't load the dish up with bell peppers, carrots, or onions as I have experienced at other Thai restaurants. Bottom line - add some chopped long beans and you'll have a perfect version of Pad Krapow! - Pad Thai 9/10. For anyone who has tasted the unique pad Thai flavor that comes from a Bangkok street food vendor's wok, you know what I mean when I refer to that "smoky, slightly sweet" flavor. BarnYen comes very close to replicating that flavor. The serving size was large, included green onions, and the taste was wonderful (but a bit too sweet). I did notice that a thin noodle was used instead of the wider version typically used, which caused the texture to be slightly gummy, and bean sprouts were apparently added during cooking which caused them to become limp and soft. Typically fresh bean sprouts should be added as a garnish along with crushed peanuts, and a slice of lime (ours included the lime and peanuts). Overall, I highly recommend BarnYen. The restaurant is located in a smaller suite in a strip mall, and is very tastefully decorated. Do yourself a favor and stop in for some great Thai food! Oh, and yes, they have beer and wine available as well. read more

We ordered quite a few dishes from BarnYen. I enjoyed some of the food. The prices were quite high. - crab fried rice was very "fishy." I did not enjoy it. - appetizer sampler - came with a lot of different dipping sauces which eas impressive but they were all pretty lackluster. The items were fine. They looked better than they tasted. It's what our 8 year old ate as his meal. -Pad Thai was authentic tasting. It had a sour punch from tamarind (I presume) - Pad Kee Mow - just as they should be. No complaints. - Tiger Cry Steak - the sauce was great. The steak, though cooked perfectly, easily quite chewy. It's strip I think. It would be way better with ribeye. I wouldn't get this again -the curry with pork rib. The ribs were tender and the curry was delicious. I would recommend this dish. - crepe cake was unique. It had zero tea flavor in itself but the sauce that comes with it had the tea flavor. I didn't like it but my family did. - the sticky rice with mango was as it should be but it was $12. No joke. I was excited to finally have a Thai restaurant close to home, but never did I expect it to be so good. We arrived at 3:52 PM on a Tuesday not realizing they do not open until 4 pm for dinner, but they quickly let us in and greeted us cheerfully. The menu does not have a ton of items, which for me is a huge plus. The place is cuter than most strip mall Thai restaurants. We ordered the beef basil fried rice and the pork pad kee mao. Both were scrumptious and we ate every last bit of it. Service was amazing and the food came out quick. I have been daydreaming about that meal for the rest of the week. Satay: 2/5 this feels like a lazy take on this appetizer. they took a chicken breast and cut it up and grill it. Seasoning is okay but I can taste the "smell of chicken" on it - meaning it wasn't cleaned enough/marinated properly 2. Pad se ewe: 3/5 portion is small for the price and hardly any noodles in it. My favorite Thai restaurant was one I've been going to for about two years now in cedar park. I didn't think I could find anywhere else that had better Thai food but this place just proved me wrong! The pineapple fried rice was incredible as well as the pad see Ew and the red curry. I couldnt help but smile after taking the first bite of the red curry. We have tried almost every item on the menu and have loved all of it. The pad see ewe is amazing and the teriyaki chicken is incredible (though a little pricey for what you get). Fast. Good. Large portion. I have a sensitive pallet, I can taste things most people miss. That being said I did note a slight fishy taste with the pork so be cautious of cross contamination if you have an allergy. It wasn't a deal breaker for me.
