Absolutely YES and come taste the amazing cuisine of Basil Thai! Came across an Instagram post and wanted to give it a try! We were greeted immediately when we entered, seated in a booth, and advised to access the menu thru the posted QR code. My friend ordered the custom dry pot that had noodles, definitely has some spicy kick, but very flavorful! I ordered the custom hot pot w/ all the meat and seafood options, onion, bean sprouts, broccoli, mushrooms, with mild spice. The broth is very flavorful. We made our own entree by taking some of the dry pot and spoon the chicken broth and veggies atop, squeeze a lil lime juice and OMG it's a flavorful masterpiece! The only reason I didn't give Basil Thai 5 stars was because I thought the digital menu via the QR code was a little difficult to use and there are limited substitutions so definitely make sure you understand the spice levels.
I was recommended this place from a friend, so I had to try when I'm in Austin. When we got there it was empty, which was a surprise because we came in during lunch time on a weekend. This made me question whether it was actually good or not. Me and my boyfriend did the create your own hot pot. I got the thai yellow curry with beef & he got the combo tom yum. The both of the broths were really good. The thai yellow curry was rich & creamy. The tom yum was sweet. Both of the hot pot had plenty of meats & veggies. It was a good portion for the both of us & wouldn't recommend sharing. To place an order, you just scan the QR. We were able to get our food fairly quickly. Overall, it was good & I would most likely come back when I am in Austin.
AUSTIN RESTAURANT WEEK #2 A pleasant find in the HEB shopping at Parmer and Mopac...this little gem was a hidden surprise. We might not have heard about Basil Thai had it not been for restaurant week. For $25 you received soup and fried chicken for 2-3 people. After eating my soup, I did not have much room for fried chicken. The soup was nicely prepared with perfectly cooked vegetables...just a little more than al dente but not super soft. We had enough leftovers for another meal. The soup was so flavorful and steaming hot, which came out on a square wood stand with a hibachi type top. You could literally see the fire underneath the metal bowl. My hubby, who is a meat and potatoes guy, loved the soup and the fried chicken. The white meat fried chicken was in nugget size servings with a superbly flavored crust. The manager served us with ourfood coming pretty quickly. Basil Thai had a large number to go orders with two Uber drivers picking up large orders. The environment in the restaurant was pretty laid back. Thumbs up on this restaurant...
I was really drawn to the concept and was super excited to try this place. However, I was a bit disappointed :( I ordered the spicy dry pot that had all the toppings chosen for you. You order by scanning a QR code on your phone and the interface was confusing for me. I thought noodles were included, so I ended up having to order some on the side later. The price was lowkey ridiculous, $1.50 for 1/4 of an instant noodle block. The dry pot itself was okay. It was around $20 with just meat and veg and the portion was pretty big, enough to feed two people. The only thing was that it was insanely salty. I brought the leftovers home and diluted it with some chicken broth and it tasted a lot better. The flavor was good and I liked the mala spice. The service was very nice. I would give it another try but maybe order differently. The thai tea however, was really good! It tasted like it was actually brewed and not powder.
Service was not bad. It was really busy when I went but we were able to get a table pretty quickly. We got the family combo meal to split and it was a lot of food. However some of the flavors/spices were kind of off. the dry noodles just felt like when you have random stuff in the fridge and you tossed it together. It had french fries, fish balls and all sorts of random things that didn't taste cohesive at all. However I really really enjoyed the fried rice, it's probably one of the best I've had. Perfectly spicy and fluffy.
We were looking for a Thai place that was somewhat northwest and picked this place. When I walked in, the fabulosa cleaning chemicals were over powering the restaurant to the point it made my nasals hurt, but touched it out since we were a party of 3. No paper menus, had to scan and order but had issues since our order was not submitted, waitstaff ended up placing our order. Prices are steep considering the amount of food you get. The dishes are different than we are accustomed too although the broths were not as heavy and rich which was a plus. I found the food ok, however the drunken noodle was dry, I'm use to it having it slightly saucy. The red curry hot pot was tasty but again, slightly different than what we're used to. The tom yum seafood hotpot was tasty but not what I was expecting and a very small hotpot but luckily we had enough to share. We all drove a minimum of 20 miles to this place and am not sure it's worth the distance driven. We have our favorites that we frequent in our areas. But it was worth a try.
I had seen that Basil Thai was like a personal hotpot place, but I had never gone before because I thought it was like a whole deal and probably expensive, and that I had to save the occasion for something special. But! It's actually so accessible and can pass for any meal. Not that the food isn't special, because it really is good, but that I had overhyped what the experience would be into something overwhelming, when that wasn't the case at all. You can do a build your own, but with all the options on the menu, I just decided to get one of their already curated bowls - the coconut milk (tom kah) with beef. I am guilty of just ordering anything that says it has coconut milk in it. And im often disappointed by not really being able to taste the coconut milk in it. But that wasn't the case here at all. Whenever I'm craving spicy coconut milk type broth, this is exactly what I want! The food comes out pretty quickly, and the servers are pretty friendly! I got the medium level spice for this dish, but I definitely feel like I could have gone for the hotter version. I was kind of scared because I was coming off of recovering from a slight cough, but definitely could have gone spicier. The noodles themselves were okay, it felt like your typical ramen noodles. But all the toppings were good, I loved the broccoli in it too. But I wish there was more beef inside, it didn't feel like it had much meat at all. But yeah the broth really sold it for me. I feel like I could have just drank it all, but I didn't want to be too puffy :(( I wish I packed it and took it home. That being said, the price was pretty reasonable imo.
THE BIG: Basil Thai is nestled in the Market at Parmer Lane strip mall. The windows have ads on it but also acts as a sun protector. Plenty of parking in the outdoor parking lot. THE BLACK AND WHITE: We ordered for pickup on a Friday afternoon and was able to get our order filled fast. The parking lot gets full quick so be aware of that. We ordered the dry pot with beef, curry hotpot with udon, tom yum soup, and lemongrass beef. The flavors were all sorts of funked up but maybe it's because I'm a traditionalist with food. The curry hotpot with udon was such a weird texture and I couldn't tell if i liked it. The best dish was the dry pot with beef in my opinion. Meat was nice and spiced and had a bevy of veggies. THE FINAL BAMBOO: We spent around $60 for 4 dishes, which is an incredible price, however the food fell flat for me and I think the only time I would try this again would be if I go in person and sit down.
basil thai never misses!! my friends and i come here all the time. the portions are humongous, especially the hot pots and dry pots, and i love the build-your-own options. there's a wide variety of veggies and meats to choose from, and the protein portions are always sooo generous. the prices are on the higher side, but one pot is easily big enough for two people to share. their mala dry pot is properly spicy and numbing without being too greasy or salty. the curries and lemongrass sizzling plates do lean a little sweeter, though. service is incredibly fast and super friendly, and i leave in a food coma state every single time :D
Oh come on. This was one of my goto places for Singapore vermicelli cuz it's my favorite. I went on Sunday and got platter of weirdly flavored spaghetti? Seriously? Had no curry flavor and the reheated wheat noodles were a weird texture. I won't be back and unfortunately I recommend you look elsewhere. If a place will sub out rice vermicelli with spaghetti? They've lost the plot. I'm so disappointed. There's enough other places around. Don't bother here.
First hotpot experience and this place really set the bar high. Was greeted by the sweetest lady as soon as we walked in. She let us know to scan to order and offered to answer any questions we had before submitting our order. Food was out so fast and presentation was mouthwatering. We decided to do the create your own hotpot with the Thai red curry and salt and pepper wings. The Hot pot was amazing. Not too rich and had depths of flavor. Loved being able to create my own unique flavor by being able to select the ingredients. The salt and pepper wings were not as great. The chicken was very salty and lacked flavor. Overall great experience definitely will be back anytime I'm in the ATX area. Loved the staff 10/10!
I love Basil Thai. I hadn't been in a while and I can honestly say I was a tad disappointed. I always used to order the red curry with shrimp. It comes in an oblong bowl and it's soupy. Soooo delicious! Well now they make you order online. I selected red curry. It came out like fried chicken pieces with red curry sauce mixed in! Clearly NOT what I was expecting. They told me the curry I wanted was on the old style booklet menus and not online. Needless to say I got what I wanted however still had to pay for an untouched and unwanted meal. Make sure you understand clearly what you're wanting before ordering.
Basil Thai has little competition in Austin for a la carte hotpot (besides Soupleaf!). Basil Thai offers a variety of Thai and other Asian flavors in their broth, and their curry broth is delicious! I got the yellow curry and it was creamy, a little tart, and went very well with beef that I got. Although they messed up a bit with our orders, we had a big table and I could tell that they were trying to accommodate. Overall, the taste/flavor was there and the owners were really nice! Would recommend. I'd expect to spend at least around $25 a meal here.

My last visit here I gave a pretty tough review. My grandchildren wanted to eat here on a recent visit with us, and so we went for dinner with them and other family. Overall, a great experience! Service was excellent. The chicken wings as an appetizer were delicious, perfectly fried and tender. The chicken eggrolls were good size and delicious! My hot pot, seafood base, was full of seafood and other good stuff that I had picked out. My daughter enjoyed her hot pot as well. My son-in-law had boneless chicken wings and although I don't remember the sauce, it was extremely tasty. Everyone had a great time and a great meal! Restaurant was clean, organized, and comfortable. This place is awesome! We have been here twice now and each time the food has been super delicious, with quick service and such kind hospitality from Rachel. The fried chicken, hot pot, and appetizers are all great. I'm so glad to have found this hidden gem, as the prices are reasonable and the quality of ingredients are very high. Came here again for lunch and this time I tried ordered the customizable dry pot with shrimp, chicken, lamb, and beef. It didn't cost extra to have all of the different proteins which was a nice surprise. This had such an interesting spice! On the menu it said "with numbing" in the name and I wasn't sure what that meant but now I understand that it means that the spice literally has a numbing sensation. It was very tasty! The wings here are actually insane though. So crispy and tender! I would definitely recommend!! read more

Checked out Basil Thai after hearing my friends rave about it! We went on a Sunday afternoon around 12:30 pm and were seated pretty immediately. Lots of booths and tables in terms of space. We placed our orders online using the QR code, and the food came out relatively quickly too. I got the Create Your Own Pot which lets you customize your broth and other ingredients (up to 8, so lots of options there!). Thai Green Curry (Spicy) Hot Pot ($16.95) - The broth was delicious, warm and super comforting with really good flavor! Great broth option for anyone looking for a more spicy, herby curry. - All of the ingredients were fresh and tasty (got a bunch of different veggies + udon & ramen) Overall would highly recommend Basil Thai if you're craving some comforting, flavorful Thai curry! This was my first time visiting, and I would be happy to come back. read more

Stopped by lastnight and we loved our dinner! We did the Build Your Own Hotpot for $20/pp. The creamy red curry sauce with beef is delicioussss and full of flavor. My boyfriend order the lemongrass sauce with chicken and shrimp--it's the perfect pot for a rainy day. Their broth is FULL of flavor. The two employees were very quick and helpful! Got the beef this time for the create your own hotpot, which rings in at $18. Mild spice and the szechuan flavor was plenty spicy for me. I liked the potato which came in thin slices, and the wood ear mushroom is really good. Next time I plan on trying the create your own noodles which is cheaper but comes with 4 toppings instead of 8. My friends had it and the portion actually looks bigger than the hotpot portion. read more

Always heard and seen great things about basil thai but never actually went for myself until recently. It definitely lives up to the hype! The parking lot is a bit tight, but theres usually enough spots. Service isn't like a typical restaurant. You place your order using the QR code, and they bring your food out. It didn't take long for our order to come out. We customized our own hotpot. The yellow curry was warm and hearty, not too heavy! We also got drunken noodles, which were so yummy. The noodles were chewy, but the beef was on the tougher side. Overall, the flavor profile had a nice spice kick to it with a hint of sweetness. The inside was spacious, and the employees we interacted with were kind. I will definitely be back when I'm in town again! read more

Basil Thai is one of my favorite comfort food restaurants! This is the build your own hot pot with spicy broth and udon noodles along with beef slices. So flavorful so much food. It's a good size restaurant, plenty of shared parking. You will scan a QR code and order on your phone at the table! They will bring your food to you! It's a casual dining experience but guaranteed a good time. Highly recommend anytime in the Austin area. read more

At the recommendation of another Yelp Elite friend, I tried their lunch with my son this week for Austin Restaurant Week. It was a good deal for $25 for their soup and tangy fried chicken dish that served 2-3 people. We were expecting more spice to the dishes, but we both enjoyed it. I especially liked the soup. It tasted fresh and savory. We probably should have asked if they could make it spicier as we are used to spicy Thai food! It was a bit complicated to order because you had to use their scan and order which didn't really have the details of the ARW special but I had looked online before so had an idea of what it was. The app made you enter your email and phone to order but then when you paid they would come over with a tablet to pay. Personally, I'm kind of tired of handing my email and phone number out to every place when I just want to order, eat, enjoy, pay, and leave. Oh well. I came in on a rainy day to warm up with a personal hot pot, and it really hit the spot. It was my first time in, and was really impressed with their hospitality and food experience. The hot pot was everything I wanted, and every time I needed anything someone would magically appear to give it to me -- before I even told them I needed it. This impressive anticipation of my needs happened literally like 3 separate times, and really showed me that they knew what they were doing. This place had good service and we got seated quickly on a Friday night. They had QR code menus to scan at each table and even asked for seat location so they could bring the correct person their food. Now let's get down to the food. We ordered the lemon grass (tom yum) seafood hotpot and a build your own hotpot option. Although the broth was flavorful, it was a bit pricey for the amount of food given. There were a good amount of veggies, but the seafood option and the build your own both lacked in protein. We mistakenly thought the seafood hotpot came with noodles, so definitely make sure to add noodles or add an extra side of rice. read more

Basil Thai has a lot of great options to choose from but my personal favorite is building your own hot pot. I really like the Thai Red Curry soup base along with lamb as my protein of choice. They also have many vegetables and other toppings to add into your hot pot to make it your own. The service was fairly good as our food came out relatively quickly but our waters were not refilled until the end of our meal. You also can scan a QR code to place your order but the servers are available to answer any questions you may have as well as take your order if you are not a big fan of technology. The restaurant was open with booths and tables available to accommodate various party sizes so it is definitely a great place to go for a date or gather with others. read more
I've had this place to go but this was the first time I've been in the restaurant. It's cool they have individual hot pot dishes and the prices weren't terrible. I ordered the Tom Kha Kai and Pad See Ew. I should have just ordered the soup because I wasn't super hungry for the noodles. The soup was delicious! The flavor of the coconut milk and spices blend together lovely and the portion size was great for me. Because I filled up on the soup, I was pretty full by the time I got to the noodles. I had them the next day and they were just as yummy. Good flavor and not too spicy. Overall, not a bad Thai place and wouldn't mind coming back. read more

Decent. We came on a Saturday around 7:30pm and didn't get seated until around 8pm. It was a little busy, but they were short staffed to buss tables as customers were leaving, so we were waiting longer than we should've. You order through a QR code, which we did pretty quickly, but we didn't get our meal until close to 9pm. Once I got my dish, they had forgotten several ingredients. The service is very slow, but they're friendly. Not the best hot pot I've tried in terms of environment, price, and service, but it's worth trying out. read more

I've been here 3 times now, and for some reason, I haven't done a review. The food I got each time was delicious and filling. Today, I ordered the Lemon Grass Chicken. It came to my table still sizzling. It was slightly spicy, but not too much for me. There were plenty of chicken and vegetables. In fact, I asked for a to-go container when the server brought me my order. The service was excellent, and I had my food in about 10 minutes after ordering. There are plenty of tables and booths. Basil Thai is a very decent option for Asian food in Austin area. They seem to be most known for their individual hot pots, so I customized my own hotpot and chose thai yellow curry broth which was marked as being spicy. The hot pot's portion size was perfect and it comes in a individual pot that continues to boil on the table as you eat them. I liked that you can choose up to 8 ingredients, which was plenty to fill the pot. Everything already comes warm and cooked, so no need to worry about undercooking the meat and toppings and it's ready to eat right away. I enjoyed my lamb and all the toppings and it really made for a warm comforting meal. The broth was not as flavorful as I would've liked, especially for a hotpot that is to be enjoyed by itself rather than dipping the toppings in different sauces. The broth was barely spicy as well. My husband ordered their spicy dry pot which are not customizable like the hotpot but come with ample amount of meat and vegetables stir fried with Schezuan sauce. The portion size for this dish was very large and the pot came piled up high with ingredients, almost double the size of the hot pot. The schezuan sauce tasted amazing with the ingredients and it had a very spicy kick which is not for everyone but I really enjoyed. You'd have to pay additional to order rice but you must pair it with rice for the best combination. The portion was so big that we had leftover, and it still tasted great heated up at home. Between the two dishes I highly recommend their spicy dry pot for the value and flavor. read more

Basil Thai is great for a chilly day. It's casual and perfect for a quick lunch or dinner. Restaurant ambiance is no frills. I tried one of the premade schezuan hot pots - it was quite spicy and full of flavor. The portion is just huge, I feel like 2-3 ppl can share with maybe another an app or something. There were lots of add ins for the hot pots. Seems like limitless combinations for broth and ingredients. You order via QR code and food comes out fast. I also enjoyed the drunken noodles and spring rolls. Service is quick and we did get checked on a few times. read more

I love Basil Thai. Not because it's the tastiest or most authentic Thai food, but there's a certain homeyness that I feel when eating here. My go-tos are the build your own hotpot with green/Penang curry. Portions are big, and leaves you full and satisfied. Service here is always very friendly! read more

Solid family-owned Thai restaurant in North Austin! Have ordered many takeout dinners from here - cozy interior, reasonable prices, and quick service. In some orders the meats have been tender, in others they've been tough and chewy. Their biggest strength is their ability to serve strong, savory, and complex flavors in their curries! Weakness is that their noodles are just meh. Overall, a decent spot for something quick and satisfying. read more
