While the restaurant is pleasant, the real draw here for me is their bar. Barranco has my favorite cocktail program in LaMorinda, and is easily top 3 for Contra Costa on the whole. This place is a great addition to Lafayette! I had the seafood paella and a pisco sour and enjoyed both. I shared an empanada and Tequeños at the table with friends. The empanada is great, but you do only get one. The restaurant was full even on a Tuesday, so it got a bit loud. Reservations are probably a good idea. I agree with others that Yelp should probably categorize this a three dollar sign price range, since the main courses average $27. We spent about $50/person each getting one drink, one main dish, and sharing two small plates. read more

First off, I was really looking forward to a Peruvian restaurant in our area so I did not have to go to the numerous ones in San Francisco. Thought I'd give this one a try. Host was too young and said we could not have a certain table because he said they were reserved. Funny as when we left the same tables we wanted were still available. So we were put on a tiny table with uncomfortable cafeteria like chairs. This restaurant is loud, noisy and has uncomfortable chairs and small table sizes. Everything I ordered was mediocre at best. I ordered lomo saltado on their menu only to be told by the waiter they don't have it! A basic dish! The waiter said I could have it with chicken-no thanks-not for that outrageous price! Head over to Diablo foods and buy the meat then! Over priced menu. I ordered the steak dish instead and the meat quality was substandard and full of fat and gristle. The cerviche was sweet and full of a ton of chili pepper running the taste of the tuna. All the other small plates had no taste, bland and dry. The only thing that was good was the guava soda where you can buy a 4 pack at Diablo foods for less than the cost of 1 bottle at this restaurant. Never will I go there again! read more

I am so excited about true authentic food coming to my town. I have never had peruvian food but this place rocks. The menu is a little hard to navigate but you will not be disappointed. The staff is friendly and helpful. I love meat and it was all awesome at Barranco - the pork shoulder melted in my mouth and my dad's lamb was perfectly cooked. My guest and I were extremely dissatisfied. From the burned chip snacks, to the overcooked meat that was was stated as lomo saltado. The was honestly the worse lomo i ever had in my life. No juice! Really?? How does lomo get served dry and the meat like leather. Meanwhile the paella had 1 overcooked shrimp that was still in its natural habitat. This was like soup....was it opposite day at Barranco? Wet paella and dry lomo. I am normally so harsh with my reviews but i expect more from my Peruvian restaurant since half of my family is from there and we dine out at Peruvian places quite often. This one is by far the last one on our list in the bay area. The bar is set high with la mar and la costanera. But this place has a long way to go. Start with putting more flavor in the ceviche and softening the corn or season the chicharron de pollo. The one star is because the restroom was clean. Go to fina estampa in redwood city. Okay, been here three times now, and Barranco is simply amazing. Theme is Peruvian seafood, but they have a wide range of delicious choices. The fish fillet over the stew (think a Peruvian cioppino) is most likely the best dish in all of Lafayette. It has a wonderfully cooked fillet of fresh fish put into a huge bowl of light creamy goodness to include calamari, scallops, shrimp, mussels, clams, etc. Just simply scrumptious. The cebiches are the best in the business. I love the ahi tuna one that you scoop up and put on yucca leaf chips. This a like the 6th restaurant opened by the same chef (Parada in Walnut Creek is another). Great attentive servers and a nice atmosphere. Outdoor tables available with the warmer weather and are my choice if available. Extensive bar selection to include unique Peruvian drinks. This is a very good restaurant and be sure to make reservations for Friday and Saturday evenings in advance. read more

Three of us decided to try this place out last night. Arrived at 5:30 so seating was no problem. After sitting there for 10 minutes I had to ask one of the employees how we could place a drink order. She went and found a girl who came to take our order. I asked what their "well" vodka was and she said she had no idea. The place is more like a cafeteria in furnishings. Hard wooden chairs like you'd find in a meeting hall, wooden composition table tops, no table cloths, menu is in small print on a brown background making it difficult to read.........I had to ask for salt and pepper as there was none on the table. They brought a small dish of each. In all we had a bottle of water, 4 drinks and three entrees plus a Givenchy appetizer. No one finished their entrée. Bill came and with tip it was $188.00...............a totally bad experience...................should have gone for pizza at Patxis across the street....................... read more

I've been in here a couple of times and usually get the Mac and Cheese. Usually it's good, but this time it wasn't. It was really soupy! Maybe the chefs change during the weekdays and weekends. Delicious Peruvian cuisine and good service! My husband and I popped in on a whim for dinner on a Friday, and we had no trouble getting a table. We each ordered a nice glass of red wine, and we shared the mixed green salad, seared scallops, and chicken empanada. Everything was spectacular in flavor and presentation! The empanada was huge (think a mini calzone), but delicious. We also shared the coconut panna cotta for dessert... to die for! The ONLY downside was the temperature inside the restaurant; my husband was terribly sweaty and uncomfortable throughout our meal. Our server told us that there seemed to be something wrong with their air conditioner, and that they were working on it... understandable on a 90+ degree day. Would have been 5 stars if not for my husband's discomfort with the heat. We'll be back! read more

This restaurant was clean and had great food. I ordered the crab cakes which was delicious and the seafood paella, which was also yummy but the seafood was very little. Only a few pierces for the price of $28. I didn't think it was worth the money to get a seafood paella with not much seafood in it. The pisco sour was great. read more

The food is good, but a little overpriced for such small portions. We had maracuya sours and they were really good. However, I felt they didn't have enough pisco for a 15$ drink. Ceviche can be better, it almost didn't have any flavor. I'd recommend the pulpo a la parrilla and palta rellena. The outside patio environment is very nice with live music, warm lighting and heaters (they could add more, not enough for all tables outside so make sure you ask for a seat close to one on a cold night). One thing I didn't like is that I wasn't offered the complementary chips with salsas, I had to ask for them during my meal and I was told they ran out of them. I told my waitress I saw a couple new tables with the chips and she told me they were out, and she was going to check again. She came back with what looked like leftover chips, tiny crushed pieces and no salsa because they didn't have more? They could easily offer some other complementary item, especially if they would care and pay more attention to special requests such as an important date/celebration...but I guess they don't. Nice restaurant, but not my favorite in the area for Peruvian food. read more

Sadly Barranco is going the way of multiple, other Lamorinda dining establishments (Fourth Bore, Cooperage, to name a few). You started out with a bang, but now you are understaffed and service has tanked. This was my third dinner visit with poor service. Last night we waited 15 minutes for our table to be addressed once we were seated. Lots of action buzzing around but no one talking to us. After 15 minutes I politely asked a clearly stressed-out waitress who was not ours if we could get a drink. She was clearly frazzled and trying not to act annoyed, but she was. Five minutes after that our waiter came over. He was apologetic and polite. We never got the chips and dip usually served to hold us off for the long wait, or even water. Once our order was taken the food came out quickly, but it was obvious it had been made too far ahead of time because it was all cold. Cold pork belly is nasty, gotta say, as were the other dishes that needed some heat. The food would have been good it would have been hot. We were seated by the front door which remained wide open, and it was cold outside. At least the outside tables had heat lamps, we needed one too. Disappointing experience overall. Maybe Barranco is only good for lunch on a day with a small number of customers like Cooperage used to be before they completely faded out. There is so little competition in Lamorinda. We are desperate for something decent. Please hire some more staff before the community just gives up and goes to Oakland for a decent dining experience. read more

I don't like to give bad reviews during covid since restaurants need our support but this is the Worst service ever. We booked two week in advance of Valentines Day and we showed up the day of they sat us in a corner table with no heater or any sort of umbrella when the forecast showed rain. We asked for a heater and they brought one that served a larger area and we could not even feel the heat. We asked for one small umbrella that was not being used and the hostess said "those are stationary" yet they moved another for a customer a couple tables down from us. And to top it off there was a table open on the street level seating they created with an umbrella and when we asked for that they said all seats are reserved we cannot move anyone but I will ask the manager. It's not assigned seating we could have easily been seated down there. The hostess and our waitress were not accommodating at all so we left cuz we cloudless not enjoy a Valentine's Day dinner with it raining on us and no heater. I understand with the Pandemic it's difficult but this place had the open space yet they were horrible in accommodating. Will never go back read more

I want to start off by saying that I never write reviews about anything. I always just chalk up a bad experience as just that and move on with my life. The restaurant business is a difficult one in that people who work in the business come and go, so training basically is nonexistent. Whenever I have a good experience I compliment the server and if possible the general manager if they happen to be onsite. It's sad that I almost always expect a subpar service experience but that's the day and age that we live in. I went online and made an OpenTable reservation for 7PM on Sunday December 15th. When I walked in I gave the hostess my name and had to repeat it several times because it's loud in the restaurant and she seemed to be having a hard time hearing or understanding me. She then said a name back to me that was very different from my name, so I once again spelled it out for her until finally she located my reservation in her system. The hostess then proceeded to walk us to a two top that was basically wedged between two other tables. It literally would have been impossible to slide into the away seat, without putting your rear end on the customers table on either side of the one we were being seated at. The patrons on either side of us were good sports and had a good laugh as to how we were going to be seated at our table. The patrons then did the best they could to maneuver their tables so that we could slide in but it was still going to be a tight fit. I continued to stand while my partner slid into their seat. As I was standing I noticed further into the restaurant that there was a two top empty and ready to be used. it also had plenty of space on either side of it. I should also mention that I am 6'6" tall, so most places opt to get me additional room when possible. This however did not seem to matter to the hostess who was attending to us. So I asked her why can't we be seated at the empty two top? She said " that two top is next to a four top, and that once that table of four is cleared they are going to slide that empty two top next to the four top in order to seat six people." That seemed reasonable except for the fact that the four top seemed like they were just getting started with their meal, so I still did not see why we could not sit at that empty two top. She then said "if she seats us there it's going to complicate her seating arrangements." Now that didn't make any sense at all. I however said to my partner lets just sit down and look at the menu. Well to our astonishment not even two minutes after we sat down, the hostess walked two customers right past us and to the empty two top that we were requesting to sit at. We along with the patrons on either side of us were completely flabbergasted. It was literally like the biggest slap in the face. The crazy thing about it was we weren't even arguing with her, we were just asking for a simple explanation as to why she could not seat us at the empty two top? So when she walked right by us with the other couple I almost lost it right there. I proceeded to head to the hostess stand and speak to the waitress who gave us our menus. I told her what happened and to her credit she said "let me get you two seated at one of our empty four tops so that you have extra room." I was so upset that I told her that they could have done that from the beginning when they saw that it would be difficult for us to be seated at our table because of the space issue. At this point I was now thinking why would I spend money in a place that treats its customers like that? So I told my partner to grab her stuff because we were leaving. The hostess now approaches me and says how upset she is and that she's crying because she's so upset. Well that meant nothing to me because she put herself in that situation. We left and went to Postinos right there in Lafayette. That place was packed as well but my partner happened to know the owner and shared with him what had happened to us at Barranco. He then apologized to us for having to have gone through that situation and asked if he could buy us a drink? They were totally booked but the hostess at Postinos told us to wait by the bar because we could probably jump on a table that opens up and order dinner in the bar. We ended up doing that and had a wonderful dinner and experience. We spent well over $100 that we would have spent at Barranco if it wasn't for the inept hostess working there. This is such a stupid first world problem that I feel dumb even taking the time writing this negative review. Why I am taking the time however is because that hostess went to such lengths to explain why we could not sit at the empty two top and then immediately sat a couple there not even two minutes after we squeezed ourselves into the original table. Really excited a Peruvian restaurant opened in Lafayette! Food was tasty, but I find it overpriced and the portions really small which is why I am giving it 3 stars vs. 4. We came with friends and we all enjoyed our meal. I just wish this was a place I could frequent more often. Some of the dishes we ordered - roasted beet salad, ceviche tasting (extra chips we ordered at the recommendation of our server arrived after our ceviche), chicken chicharrones, pollo a la brasa , and paella. All very tasty, but pricey. Service was okay, it was a busy night. read more

We started with the verde shrimp ceviche and the tuna ceviche. I usually prefer my shrimp ceviche cubed into little pieces, so the half shrimps seemed a little tough to me. The ahi ceviche was delicious, but comparable to a poke dish more than a ceviche. The yuka chips served with both dishes were perfectly crunchy. For the main dish, we went with the seafood paella. Large portions of rice and squid, but only a few shrimp, mussels, etc, which was sad because the few that were in the dish were delicious. Also got a few large chunks of black pepper in the dish, which wasn't too appetizing, but overall, a great paella. I had the ginger lemonade which was delicious, albeit, very ginger-y. If you don't like a lot of ginger, I wouldn't recommend this lemonade. Sad to say we didn't order the churros for dessert, saw them at our neighbors table and they looked incredible. Overall a great meal and great service. I'm glad to have this interesting addition to the Lafayette food scene. read more

it was really just a -ok. i did not like their ceviche. they use this thai chilli sauce that has so much sugar and it really takes away all the good taste from fish. that is very unfortunate. spinach side dish was something like 9 dollars and i feel it was overpriced. sangria also too sweet. they use too much sugar and i do not believe lamorindans would appreciate it. somehow this place was packed! do not understand why! read more

Outstanding in every respect, save their corkage fee! My guests brought a special bottle of Peruvian wine to contribute a little bit, but we were all shocked when the bill came and the fee was $25.00! Barranco's food dishes were all priced nominally so I'm hoping the overpriced corkage fee is simply a lack of awareness of the standard range the local fine restaurants are charging. I withheld one star because of the corkage fee - and implore the management to rethink and reprice their fee to be more in line with other restaurants of this caliber. Best. Empanadas. Ever. Really. I've had lots of empanadas in my day and it never gets as good as these. The chicken ones are nicely spicy and the pastry is buttery and delicious. We also had the tiradito de tuna, fresh as possible, the lomo saltado (deliciously marinated skirt steak) and plantains (ok, I'm a sucker for plantains.) All great sauces: soothing basil, creamy spicy, yellow ahi-chile, sweet sauce; all delicious. Ambitious service and fun atmosphere, a little too noisy for my taste but not impossible. We didn't love the ceviche verde, it was OK. We didn't love the meat skewers. We will be back as the menu is large and there was more we wanted to try.
