It felt surprisingly easy to enjoy myself at the Busy Bee Cafe in Ventura California in the same way I enjoyed my visit to Funko Hollywood. There is something about this place that immediately lifts your mood the moment you walk inside. The atmosphere feels warm lively and full of personality in a way that teenagers naturally connect with. It has that comfortable playful energy where you can sit down talk with someone enjoy your food and feel like you are part of a fun little world without any pressure at all. I did not expect it to feel that youthful and inviting but it absolutely did. One thing that stood out to me more than anything else was the garlic bread. Busy Bee Cafe is the only location I know that has garlic bread with a taste I genuinely love. I do not even know if they sell that exact garlic bread online and honestly that mystery makes it feel even more special. The flavor is warm buttery and rich in a way that hits you instantly. It is the kind of garlic bread that teenagers would enjoy a lot especially if they are hanging out with friends and looking for something comforting and delicious to share. It is rare to find something so simple that leaves such a strong impression. While I was there I noticed a lot of teenagers enjoying the space and it made perfect sense. The cafe has a classic retro charm that feels both nostalgic and fresh at the same time. It is the kind of place where teenagers can take pictures enjoy the decor and feel completely at ease. The environment supports creativity and fun without trying too hard. I appreciated that same feeling myself. It reminded me of how easy it can be to enjoy a place when the atmosphere naturally encourages you to relax and be present. I have only visited Busy Bee Cafe once in my life before writing this review but that one visit was more than enough to make it memorable. It is rare to find a place that feels relaxed and exciting at the same time but this cafe manages to do that effortlessly. The garlic bread alone makes me want to return but the overall experience is what stays with you. It is playful welcoming and full of life in a way that makes you feel mentally sharp youthful and connected to the moment. I would highly recommend that teenagers go to Busy Bee Cafe in Ventura. It gives them a place to enjoy great food take pictures hang out with friends and feel creative and energized. Really cute place! I loved the miniature jukeboxes they had at every booth. I found Busy Bee Cafe on Yelp whilst looking for diners near the Amtrak station. The service is great - Lily was amazing. Attentive and really friendly. The food was okay, a little underwhelming. I was really excited to have pancakes but after a few bites, I felt like I could taste bacon. Maybe the grill wasn't fully cleaned or perhaps the oil being used wasn't fresh. They just had an oily and salty taste (we sent it back but didn't want a replacement). We also ordered the fried egg sandwich. I liked that it was almost like a grilled cheese! But the sourdough bread also has a funky oily taste. Hash-browns and coffee were alright. A lovely 50s diner atmosphere with friendly and attentive staff. My order was two dinner meals - one was a Salmon w/ Veggies and rice. The other was Chicken Schnitzel w/ Mushroom gravy on the side and Mashed Potato. I got the gravy on the side since i prefer lemon on schnitzel. I fished the mushrooms out of the gravy as it was a bit rich in flavor for me. The dinner meal also included a salad (or soup), drink and dessert. The food is meh if ordering anything but burgers. I had the spinach salad and it comes with balsamic vinegrette. My friend had a burger. Burger was great. Salad- well I have never had strawberries in a spinach salad - drenched in what was supposed to be balsamic. This dressing rated like good seasonings bottle Italian dressing and someone added some red wine e vinegar. I have balsamic at least three times a week and this was not. I could not eat this salad as hard as I tried. There was more of this stuff on the side. If the salad was undressed I had a chance. I don't waste food and very rarely do I ever send anything back or complain. But I had to. This was inedible and it was a shame. My complaint t was met with an argument that this was balsamic. I'm Italian and have eaten balsamic everywhere. This was not it and the attitude in taking it back getting me to pick something else and her telling the chef to rush it when we were not in a rush was really uncalled for. I love the atmosphere of this place, it's like walking into a Time Machine. The only issue was the food, I had a great bacon breakfast burrito but their pancake wasn't fully cooked, you could taste the raw batter... their tri tip burrito unfortunately tasted off as well, I'd prefer not to explain. Don't get me wrong, I'd say come enjoy the simple menu options but I am disappointed in the food. Also, when we apologetically returned the steak burrito and gave our reason, we were given attitude afterwards. We felt bad but it is what it is. Won't return, shame. read more

A great little retro diner in a busier part of sleepy Ventura. I was passing through town from West LA and had been wanting to try this diner for quite some time so finally got my chance today. It's located in the downtown district around a bunch of other bars and walkable shops. We were able to find a free parking spot in a parking lot across the street so parking is very easy in this area. Inside is quite small, but in a really homey and cozy kind of way. They have a long counter as well as a lot of booth seating. Inside is as you would expect it, a total throwback to 1950s Americana. I loved all of the neon and retro signage decorated all throughout the inside. It's a sort of place that is fun to stay a while, especially because you can take control of the jukebox. Our server was also very polite and everything that we ordered came out very fast. For my breakfast, I chose the Chicken Fried Steak and thought it was fantastic. It was larger than I could even finish so definitely make sure you're hungry if you order this one. It comes with three eggs which were cooked perfectly and overall, I was really happy with it and would recommend. This is right on the main drag in downtown Ventura. My partner and I love old school diners, and this place drew us in with their decor and ambiance...and the fact that it had a bathroom. We weren't particularly hungry, it late afternoon-ish when we dropped by, so we just ordered and split an order of the cinnamon raisin French toast and some coffees. I mean, this was something that we probably could have made at home pretty easily, but our server was amazing. He split the French toast into two plates for us and kept our coffees full. As for the bathroom, you need a token to get into it, and it's a single stall. They have the old tabletop jukeboxes - for a quarter, you get two songs. Sadly, we didn't have a quarter. We parked a couple blocks away because the 4 blocks or so were blocked off to traffic, but there is an easy free all-day parking on the mission side of the drag. read more

My friends were in town and we walked the Blvd looking for something for brunch. My girlfriends wanted a traditional American breakfast and when they saw the menu and cute old school diner vibes they said we had to go in. I'm really glad we did because this spot is legit. Surprisingly for some many years I've walked right by this spot and never come inside, because this really is a classic feel good diner. I was also pleasantly surprised how large their cocktail menu is. When I think diner I don't usually think cocktails but here I was super impressed they had so many drink options and with pictures! The vibes were cute, red and white decor and lots of old school diner memorabilia. Oldies were playing overhead it was definitely a vibe. Our waitress was very sweet and patient with us. With the menu being so big it took us a little while to figure what we wanted but she was nice and gave good recommendations. She was very attentive and also ensured that our drinks were always refilled. I definitely appreciated the stellar service here. Nice people work here. 5 stars for service and ambiance. The food is a solid 4 stars and overall was pretty good. My friends liked their dishes more than I did but that's ok. I had the chicken fried steak and while presentation wise it looked good the texture and taste just wasn't there for me. Better CFS in the 805. However my scrambled eggs were cooked perfectly and the hash browns tasty. My friends loved their meals. I love that when you ask for the bacon here extra crispy they deliver! My other friend got a unique vegan Ruben sandwich and she was in heaven. I love that their vegetarian and vegan dishes hit the spot. As a returning customer to the location, I love the 50s themed diner. The food quality is always a solid eight out of 10. Very tasty food for what you are getting. The atmosphere is amazing and although the waitresses at the location are very friendly. The steak and eggs is always my go to, but this time I tried the Ruben Sandwich. It was delicious. Glad we got to give Busy Bee another go. The last visit was years ago and it was a sad excuse of a meal and the entire vibe just was a miss. After a birthday request we stopped in for dinner and it was a full 180 degree turn around for the better. The energy was high, the staff was amazing and the food was a hit!! Now your thinking old school diner but I've had a craving for an LA street dog for weeks and when I saw the footlong Tijuana dog it was on! That dog was legit a foot long girthy glizzy with bacon wrapped around, grilled onion and peppers and it just hit the spot! With a grilled jalapeño on the side to nibble on to up the heat. First off, I like Busy Bee's milkshakes. However, one order is a lot of food. A burger here is way too big, and the greasy flavor can be overwhelming. That's pretty much it. Very cute diner with an extensive menu! We ordered the seafood scampi pasta and the provolone chicken sandwich. Both were yummy but definitely overpriced in my opinion. One thing I thought was odd was that there was no music playing in the back of the diner, so there was sort of an emptiness in the air. This is all very, very sad, and it pains me to write this. Busy Bee used to be one of Ventura's more memorable experiences. It still is - but for all the wrong reasons. Our family and friends have been going to the Busy Bee for over 30 years. Within the last year, everything has noticeably deteriorated. It just isn't the same place. One of the former staff told me before she left that the owner no longer shows up and has farmed the place out to his kids. The food quality now screams "CHEAP!", yet prices have become OUTRAGEOUS ($10 for a milkshake that is half the size of what it once was). Our recent experience here (September, 2025) was SO bad that we didn't even stay for dessert, which is what the place is known for. Most of the long-time staff have left, and have been replaced either with new people who barely speak English or the owner's kids themselves, who behave like the spoiled, always-got-to-work-for-daddy brats they are. The ambience isn't anywhere close to the fun 1950s vibe that once characterized the place (the jukeboxes at the tables and the big one in the corner are all broken and there is seemingly no interest in fixing them), and the owner's kids are more interested in cheapskating than in giving a great experience. Using DoorDash i have ordered Yeager Schnitzel and cherry pie. Knowing Germany very well and having had dozens of this dish there, i am sorry to say that your dish not only does NOT taste like the German one, but it was inedible to me and it went straight in my garbage. Totally wasted over $41. Your cherry pie was not good either and it went in my garbage as well. Once upon a time i had a Polish stuffed cabbage dish, which was very good, but it was at least ten years ago. This is one of our go to eateries in Ventura. They have selection of vegetarian items that I usually find something good to eat. Not so today! They had an advertised special of vegetable lasagna but it is anything but special! It was gobs of thick white sauce with shreds of carrot and scrapings of carrot. Love, love, LOVE this place. The decor was fabulous, transporting us back to the 50's and 60's with Marilyn Monroe & Humphrey Bogart movie posters, and jukeboxes at every booth. We put in 25¢ for 2 songs, but left before we heard them. Meanwhile all the songs we did hear transported us back to a rock'n'roll time. We used the bathrooms, which were singles, and they were clean and stocked. The women's room had a baby changing table. The signage advised us to not smoke (thank you), pay our server (of course), and warned us not to dance on the tables (tempting). The staff was super efficient and friendly. As soon as drinks or food were ready, they came out to the table. My neice and I could not resist the drink specials. She had The Hawaiian Grinch & I had the Hot Toddy. Both were good. Husband, our designated driver, had a Coke. Neice ordered the tuna melt without the bread and a side of pickle & potato wedges. Husband had the pot roast special with toasted roll, gravy and mashed potatoes. I ordered the Sunrise Special: 3 pancakes with strawberries, blueberries and bananas - all fresh fruit! It came with syrup, but I didn't need it. Everything was delicious! Niece & I joined the clean plate club, but Husband left some potatoes & pot roast on his plate because he was too full to eat anymore. And he wanted to try one of their home made desserts. I decided to visit the Busy Bee Cafe because it's a 50s diner with an outdoor patio on the street. I liked how the interior had a juke box and a checkered floor. I always enjoy that architectural style. But, I had mixed feelings on the menu. On the positive side, they have every variety of mixed drink and milk shake you can think of. I ordered a "spiked" strawberry banana milkshake, and it was good. Their food menu has a huge variety too. On the negative side, I agree with other reviewers that the food itself is kind of bland. Service was fine. I didn't have to wait long to get served, and they let me pick where I wanted to sit outside. We came here after reading lots of reviews. Needed a place that would interest our kids (3-6 yrs old) & thought a 50's diner would be great. Plus I was starving for a burger! FOOD - server was dull in personality - my ortega burger reminded me of those frozen circular shaped hamburger patties you can find stacked in a single plastic sleeve at Costco (although I bet Costco ones taste much better). Flavorless, I salted the heck out of it, took 3 bites & then gave the waiter my plate. - fries, more like potato wedges that seriously looked like they were fried, sat around for an hour, fried, sat for an hour, then fried again & served + club sandwich, decent taste, nothing special ++ kids meals, huge portions + kid pancakes typically buttermilk, and portions for kids huge ++ the food came super fast ATMOSPHERE + 50's diner theme well done - our juke box didn't work (but it did eat our quarters) - bathroom appeared to be decently cleaned until one locates the plunger just below the toilette paper RECOMMENDATION: I would only recooked this place for shakes and breakfast food read more

After a beautiful morning walk along the beach, my friends and I came across this restaurant just off of C street in Ventura. Must mention, Ventura is a lovely city with much to see all in an easy walking radius. The Busy Bee Cafe wasn't busy when we came along, about 11:00am which was perfect as we had our choice of outdoor seating and terrific personalized service. Our server was quite patient, answering all of our questions while making helpful suggestions. After perusing their vast menu, I chose a grilled portobello mushroom sandwich with avo, red onion, cheese, lettuce and tomato presented on a delicious whole wheat bun. Sandwich was delicious! Subbed coleslaw for the fries and life was good ;-) Parking can be tricky at peak hours. We parked in one of the nearby lots earlier so had lots of choices.
